Avocado toast
Brad H.

Stopped for the first time in a few years when I was in the area recently. It was disappointing to see the quality has gone down drastically, while the prices have remained the same. The avocado toast used to be so good. The bread was delicious and the avocado was fresh and pressed. Now, they use a different type of bread and what looked like a premade spread. Looks and tastes similar to Dunkin. Smoothies are still very good though.

PB&J

I normally really love this place. Today I got smoothies and this PB & J that was made by someone who either had never made a sandwich before or hated me. The smoothies were great as usual. Not a huge deal and normally wouldn't care or leave a review but the bread was also stale on top of everything.

Was in the area and really wanted an açaí bowl. I found the prices to be a bit high and the bowl a bit smaller than some other places. The store was nice and well laid out. The staff where very helpful and super friendly. They had a great selection of fresh fruits for the açaí bowl. I was a little disappointed in the price as they where high. The bowl itself was very good not the best I have had but defiantly good. I would go again if I was int he area. I struggled with the amount of stars to give it was between 3-4 and decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and give 4.

Food was good and employees were very nice. Clean place and in general a nice place to sit for a bit. I wasn't too impressed with the bowl (the toppings were very dry and tasteless) especially considering it was like $15. Friends got the green drinks which they really enjoyed and were also slightly cheaper Would come back for a drink but not for a bowl.

The Berry Bowl

Went here based off some reviews online that have raved it was one of the best places that serves the best acai bowls in Pittsburgh. However, as someone who has worked at an established acai based store and chain, the berry acai bowl with added protein did not meet my expectations at all. The service itself was very minimal and it took around 15 minutes for us to receive our bowls despite there only being one other customer before us. The consistency of the acai was very liquidy and even the smoothie consistency looked thicker and better. Scooping the acai out of the bowl was like scooping water or a melted ice cream bar. There are barely any toppings on it and it just felt like I was drinking the acai bowl at the end. For its price, I would have expected better quality from this store.

This place is pricey but I really did love my smoothie and acai bowl. They use vitamixes to blend their acai and smoothies so everything is blended very well and it's not grainy. Acai here tastes really good!I've all the fresh fruit and goji berries they top it with. It's a very good sized portion you get since it is on the more expensive side. Definitely love hitting this place up for a pick me up and a more filling, healthier meal.

$16.00 bucks and pretty mediocre....

Prices up, quantity down. Literally paid $16.00+ for a basic smoothie bowl. Positive: upon learning of the cost, my elementary aged son and niece began calculating the price of the 2 bananas, as well as the 6 or so strawberries and other fruit used in the bowl lol and arrived at the conclusion that I should have paid no more than $10.00 lol. I agreed. We went to the market and picked up 20 bucks worth of fruit and toppings, which will provide me (and them) enough ingredients for at least 4-5 days worth of smoothie bowls. Lesson: blend at HOME. Staff are very pleasant though!

In town for the month and thought I'd stop by here for a quick healthy lunch after an Orange Theory workout (it's right next door). I got 'The Coffee One' smoothie (couldn't wait, so the pic is when I was already halfway done) and 'The Avocado Toast' to go - both were 500ish calories combined and SO good. I did pick a couple red pepper flakes off the avocado toast, but the spice didn't bother me - if you're someone who isn't about a ton of seasoning, might want to tell them to hold/go easy on the red pepper flakes. Cost wise, it was ~$17 for the large smoothie and avocado toast, which is a tad pricey for my everyday lunch budget but to be expected with high quality and healthy ingredients. Had to wait a little bit (~15mins) because I placed my order right after they had a huge group come in, but I wasn't in a rush and didn't mind waiting. Still, they were nice enough to give me a free Cashew Milk Latte (which was also awesome). Will definitely be back!

Carrot Cake Açaí

I stopped by Clean Juice with my friend the other day for a quick bite for pickup. They followed all social distancing rules and made ordering easy! Food - I got the Carrot Cake bowl (a seasonal selection) and it was great! I could see them make it and they used fresh ingredients which is awesome. I feel like this is what your paying for with the price. Packaging - The packaging for my bowl was good and came with a spoon. Service - I'd say service was pretty average! It's hard to have exceptional service with all of the social distancing measures lol. Can't wait to stop by again!

Amazing juice bar! First of all, the ladies working here were outstanding. They made my experience so wonderful. They were extremely kind, patient, helpful and made delicious items! We got a bowl, juice, oatmeal and a few of the pastries. Everything was perfect! They use all organic ingredients and if anything happens to not be organic they have it listed up on the wall- awesome. The bowl was amazing- nice thick creamy base and beautifully ripe fresh fruit on top. The oatmeal was really good too! I'm never one to buy oatmeal while out because it's easy to make at home but their oatmeal was top notch. They used steel cut oats, almond butter, fresh fruit and some other stuff that that took it over the top. So good! We stayed here for well over an hour. Such a good vibe and again, the ladies working really made this place awesome for us. Thank you!

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is the only place I buy smoothies…read more I love the options, the consistency and the control over sweetness. OPTIONS There are so many smoothies to choose from, to start: all fruit, yogurt-based, seasonal and featured drinks. But you can also add and remove ingredients to make a totally customized smoothie. CONSISTENCY While it might not be important to everyone, I like that I can go there and get the same smoothie every time I order it. No one is perfect, but overall, they are consistent. SWEETNESS This is probably the most important to me, as I cannot handle a super sweet, syrupy, chemical-tasting smoothie. I have tried my smoothies from here with no added turbinado sugar and then with half. I prefer the half. The smoothies here are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. They mostly come in one size, a large amount, which I like. The cups are probably not great for the environment, but they do keep the smoothies cold. (If I could change one thing, it would be that.) This review is based solely on the smoothies. I have never eaten food here.

This shop is part of a larger chain but currently appears to be the only location in the Pittsburgh area. It's located in East Liberty and is really more of a bakery than a coffee shop. The inside is split about 50/50, with half dedicated to seating and the other half serving as a self-serve bakery. You grab a tray and tongs before walking around selecting whichever baked goods catch your eye. They also have display cases filled with cakes and other pastries that need to be kept refrigerated. For my coffee on this morning I went with a 16 oz hot honey lavender macchiato while my wife chose a 16 oz iced tiramisu latte. I have to admit that the name of my drink confused me a bit at first, but it ended up being a latte macchiato as expected. With that being said, I thought it was quite good. The lavender was light enough to be noticeable without overpowering the drink, while the honey added just the right amount of sweetness. The espresso was also present, especially on the finish, where it added both flavor and body. My wife also enjoyed her latte and appreciated the tiramisu flavors throughout. Outside of the coffee, we ordered a number of pastries. My wife chose the Crookie, which is a cookie baked on top of a croissant. My son picked out a chocolate-covered Belgian waffle, while my daughter chose the strawberry soft bread. All of them enjoyed what they ordered, and I think my wife especially loved the Crookie. As for me, I went a little overboard and chose a garlic and cheese croissant, a curry croquette, pork-dusted bread, and a sweet taro cream bread. All of them were delicious in their own way. The garlic and cheese croissant was a nice savory option, with plenty of garlic flavor and a crispy cheese crust. The curry croquette had wonderful warming spices that made it especially flavorful. The pork-dusted bread was definitely the most unusual item. The pork topping reminded me of Wild Bill's Beef Jerky, and somehow those savory flavors worked really well on top of the crunchy laminated bread. Last but certainly not least was the taro cream bread. I was impressed by how light it felt despite being packed with an impressive amount of cream filling. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I'm a sucker for bakeries like this and clearly ordered far more than my waistline needed, but everything I tried was enjoyable. While the coffee was good, the pastries are the real reason to visit, with the coffee serving as an excellent complement.

Do you even know Pittsburgh restaurants, if you don't know Square Cafe?…read more Was it packed? Yes Did we have to wait? Yup But isn't that what we want for our favorite businesses ... and isn't even better when they are fully equipped for their popularity and make the experience great through it all We were immediately greeted by the hostess and given an accurate wait time. You could see the runners and bus team hustling to move along service and turn over tables. As soon as we were seated, the waiter came over and told us to be easy with orders and honestly our coffees and our meals came ridiculously quickly given that every table was fully seated. Okay... so that's how they are awesome despite the overwhelming popularity. Let's just cover the real scoop as to why they are so popular. The restaurant is colorfully decorated with local art and contact to purchase the displayed items. The table has a QR code of Pittsburgh Bucket List places to visit.. so this place is built on community. The menu is filled with modern yummy takes on food, options for every diet, and some extremely inventive local favorites.. I couldn't see a Reuben Benedict and not order it. Marbled Rye toasted with freshly pulled apart corned beef, Russian dressing, and of course a perfectly poached egg with hollandaise. My wife ordered the Chive Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich... and let me tell you that biscuit would be good for every meal of the day! The seasonal drink menu sounds delicious too but we went with a Chai Tea Latte and a French Toast Latte. This place is a Pittsburgh destination! You gotta go to Square Cafe!

I got a warm bowl with brown rice, spinach, cucumber, apple, edamame, citrus chicken thigh, and organic tofu. The portion was solid and filling, especially with the two protein add-ons at extra cost. I also tried the avocado creme sauce, but it was a little spicier than I expected, so I was glad it came on the side. Without it, the bowl tasted a bit plain. I'd still come back and try a different sauce or mix-in combo because it feels like a solid healthy option. Also worth noting: adding a smoothie to a bowl order drops the price to $6 instead of $8, but you have to add it through the bowl order rather than as a separate item. The Tropicolada smoothie was really refreshing and I'd definitely order it again.

I was pleasantly surprised by the bowl and thought it was tasty! I will say I wish you could get more included with your bowl, places like sweetgreen or cava or even chipotle lets you get however many toppings you want, and it feels more limited here (unless you want to pay extra).
