I've had Clear since it first came to town. It wasn't super fast so I upgraded to the more expensive, faster package. It turned out to be about the same. It claims to give up to 6 mbps downloads. We've tested it on different platforms and browsers and never get more than 1.5 mbps. It also is very inconsistent. Sometimes pages load fast and sometimes really slow. There are also times where the service doesn't work for 20 minutes or so at a time. So we switched to Comcast and for about $2 more/month, we're getting 15 mbps. I don't love Comcast in general, but at least we have fast internet now. Anyway, Clear is a great concept and hopefully they will improve their speeds in all areas of town. I'm sure if you're in certain neighborhoods it works better. I know about 5 other customers who use Clear and none of them are very happy with it. read more

One word: SLOW! This internet has got to be the worst I've ever had. Even dial-up would seem more consistent. Clear however, seems to have two speeds. Slow and slower. If you're thinking about doing anything with this service other than a simple check of your email, forget it. And even then, be patient. Downloading computer updates, takes forever. Streaming any sort of media, forget it. This internet sucks. I know a lot of people have issues with Comcast's business practices. however, given the options available, it may be the best bed. bottom line CLEAR SUCKS! read more

Even though Clear ISP ceased to exist on November 6, 2015 I have to give my input on this now defunct and lame company. It seems they were sharing towers with other carriers hence the reason it never had the super uber fast service they promised for a mere $50 a month. Lame. Lame. Lame. The only thing good about them if there was a good point is they didn't force me to "bundle" my internet with my phone in order to get "savings" for a contract that lasted "just 3 years". Yeah - I got suckered into that with Century Link. Too bad Sprint didn't want our business when they engulfed Clear. That's okay. I don't want Sprint, either. I'm sticking with Verizon. read more

Aside from airlines, I can't think of a group of companies who conspire to express such disdain for their customers. I suppose Clear is only a little worse than the rest, and is a little cheaper. worst internet provider EVER. Whatever you do, DO NOT go with Clear. Signed up for internet month to month, "No cancellation fees". Great! Internet worked sometimes, very slowly. Several months later I moved into a different home where I couldn't get a signal at all. Called to cancel. They now tell me it's $120 to cancel because I'm breaking my 2 year contract. Oh, and there's a $40 dollar restocking fee. So unless you want to be tied down to an internet service that only kind of works once in a while for TWO YEARS of your life, then heed my advice. I used to have comcast it was great for the money, then my 6mo was up and and doubled in price. I switched to Clear and haven't looked back. I have the on the go and it is AWESOME! I haven't had any problems with it. Every once in a while it slows down a little, but so far so good. read more

Very slow, inconsistent internet service. It's maddening! The router they sold me is awful...It literally has a range of 10-12 feet with no walls, etc to impede the signal. The only advantage of Clear over Comcast is that Clear hasn't jacked my price up (they upped it from $50 to $55/month) like Comcast does. WOW! This may be the most corrupt company I have had to deal with. Probably worse than insurance companies and credit card companies combined... I signed up for a 2-year contract about 1.5 yrs ago and was paying $35 a month (including the rental of their device) A few months ago, we decided to move my internet connection to my office and take them up on an offer to rent an add-on device for our home. This totaled $70 (double) So far, everything is normal. They told me that the second device would be an "add-on" and I would not need a contract and that I could cancel at any time to go back to my original rate. Today I tried to cancel the secondary device to save a little money each month, and was told by account services that I would only be saving $20 each month, and that now I would have to pay $50 per month. I decided that I didn't like this company anymore, so I decided to terminate my contract with them and pay the penalty of $40. Account services now said that I have to pay a penalty for both devices and I should have read the fine print. It was apparently my fault that I was lied to. I talked to a super-visor, who couldn't get her story straight either. To cancel my account, I had to cancel today, even though I already paid through the end of the month. They don't allow cancellations to take place in the future. However, I had already been on hold for about an hour trying to cancel, and had to call several numbers to actually get the right person, so I thought, "the hell with that!" I also have to pay for the shipping to send their devices back. They don't send someone to pick it up. I have to UPS it. I asked the supervisor if there was a drop-off location somewhere in Porland that I could take the devices to, and she said she didn't know, and she would not help me find out. I told her I was recording the call (since they record their calls for their benefit only) just as an attempt to gain some leverage and try and make someone feel a bit more accountable, and she said I am not allowed to record calls and she would not give me her name. She did tell me she was the branch manager and she then hung-up on me. read more

Ya know for once I would like to come on here and have a nice positive yelp about a professional service here in Portland, Oregon but not lately. CLEAR internet service stay as "clear" away from it as you can along with COMCAST and Verizon! We are about to try Frontier crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. CLEAR is one of the worst services we have had yet! Of course we had to sign a one year contract which made me very leery of but thought heck what could go wrong..EVERYTHING! We have Roku at home and CLEAR internet service can't even keep its service up long enough for 5 min! It was doing good for awhile there but of course this company got very greedy and they sold out and added way to many people on its server and now it can not handle all the people they got hooked on it. I have used Clear for about 9 months. The first couple of months I would of rated them a 1 star. The trick is to make sure you have 3 dots or more on your modem. I live in a 2nd story, old apartment. My sweet spot is up in the attic. I am able to use my ROKU's with little interruption, even USTV, the most stubborn of all streaming channels. It cost $50 a month. I don't pay the big corporations for cable or home phone. Thanks to Clear, I no longer pay $260 for internet, cable & home phone. All 3 run around $100. read more

I was really hesitant to try Clear due to the negative reviews online. But I got sick of Comcast and Frontier jacking up my rates without telling me why and then refusing to work with me... I have to say, Clear has been great so far. You have to buy the modem ($50) and the internet seems pricey ($50/month) but that being said, I'm happy so far. And this is still less than Comcast was charging me for basic cable and internet. I'm moving and I get to take the modem with me, I don't have to register the move with Clear or schedule someone to come out and do the wiring. The modem is VERY sensitive- I live in an old brick building and it has to be in the window sill without anything blocking it for it to work. But it works well! I stream on Hulu and it occasionally has to stop and buffer, but I've noticed that the commercials buffer more than the programs. All in all, I'm happy to get out from the reign of Comcast and Frontier. I'm crossing my fingers that things stay well, especially since I just got the notice that Sprint bought out Clear.... We'll see how things go.... read more

I have had CLEAR internet and phone service for more than two months, I suggest you don't. It works great when it works. The tower is about six blocks from my home. On June 14, 2010 I was without internet and phone for more than 24 hours. On June 21st I lost service about 1:00 AM and didn't get it back until after 3:00 AM. June the 24th I lost service again in the early morning hours. I don't mind losing the internet but I do need the phone. I have heart problems and if I need medical assistance or ambulance I'll be out of luck. If I have a house fire, without being able to call 911, I can kiss the computer, phone and everything else goodbye. Now I have to figure out how I can get out of this contract with CLEAR. read more

Using Clear in Salem, OR is analogous to using dial-up in 1997. For example, if I want to watch a 30 minute show on HULU it takes me about 2.5 hours to get through it with all of the buffering required. If I have an important assignment for school I usually do not work on it from home because it's just way too slow. This is by far the most unreliable internet service I have ever encountered. Worst internet service provider ever. If you decide to buy the equipment, rather than leasing it, they don't EVER want it back. You cannot return it with a restocking fee, a charge for the time you've used it, nothing. It's yours forever, even if you move to a place where you no longer need their services, and it only works for getting internet through Clear. Try selling a unit on Craigslist for maybe one-quarter of the price they sell them for. Lots of competition out there, huh? Landfill city. HOPELESS. June 30, ordered service from the most unprofessional rep I've ever spoken to, to whom I made it very clear what I needed and what I didn't want. Called Cust Srv immediately to verify order. Totally wrong. Said I wanted to cancel service. Was told they could only reverse the shipping fees. Trnf'd to supervisor, told him I was cancelling service. Was told they couldn't cancel order until they rec'd equipment back (which had not even been sent yet), but to call back when I rec'd them, then they would issue pick-up slips. Equipement arrived, called to request the labels, was sent 2 of the 3 needed. Called back 3rd time. Sent all equipment back. Called 4th time to cancel service, got a very helpful rep who said that was totally wrong, should have cancelled my order RIGHT THEN the first call for full refund. Eventually was refunded 1/2 of total charged on credit card. Called 5th time to ask why only 1/2 refunded?. Said I would be contacted in 24-48 hrs with answer. No contact. Called 6th time (now Aug 15th) to find out where remaining refund was, why hadn't I been contacted? Was told had request had been resolved, I was not entitled to more than what was refunded because was out of 30 day trial period. Extra charges was for usage prorated. Explained whole situation over again (never even opened boxes of equipment, cancelled immediately, sent all back etc). Rep looked up how they had tried to contact me: had listed "number no longer in service". Turns out they had tried to dial my Clear customer number, not PHONE number. Then was told that they had not received one of the pieces of equipment back, so the charge was for that. I sent all 3 boxes back using the UPS labels they sent me, so all had been returned. Rep sent request again to billing to try to get remainder refunded. Said will contact me in 3-5 days. Trying to work with Clear is a joke. They have no clue what they are doing. THANK GOD I didn't decided to keep them or I would be locked into a 2 yr nightmare. I called to cancel within 1 hr of placing the order, and now SIX WEEKS later, I still am having to fight with them to get the refund I am entitled to, and getting different excuses as to why I didn't get the full refund. We started Clear internet long ago, when they first came to Portland a few years ago. We chose the cheap $25 plan, and for the first couple of years, it was actually pretty good. We measured actual download speed, and got about 2.5-3.0 megabits per second. Starting last year, they have started to "monitor" our bandwith, which pretty much means greatly reducing my download speed. There are plenty of people online who speak of this, and Clear's explanation (after a lot of research and nagging), is that they are reducing my bandwith because I use it more than they expect. Starting somewhere at the beginning of 2011, our bandwith is now 1.0-1.15 megabits per second. Much slower than what I signed up for. Youtube videos stall all the time, and I can't really even watch Hulu anymore. I've only tolerated it because of the price, but I think they recently 'monitored' my speed again 15%, so I'm shopping around for something better now. I don't recommend this internet service. They can reduce your speed at their discretion any time they want, and I don't think they'll ever give me my bandwith back (I've tried). It is VERY slow and frustrating. My phone's 4G service is almost 3 times faster. read more

Just got Clear 9 days ago, there on the go unlimited service. At first every thing was fine had a few signal problems but fixed those by moving my USB modem to the window, and 4 feet away from my computer. As of today I was labeled a heavy user by there system and my bandwidth was throttled to .25 Mbps this is no where near the 3-6 Mbps that they promised me. With the grace period being only 4 days I'm now locked in for 2 years to a service worse than DSL all because I watch TV on my computer. I understand their need to keep there network functioning but this is a blatant hook and switch the absolute lowest they should be able to throttle some on is 3.0Mbps not 0.25 and only during peak usage hrs. There sales reps will promise you every thing under the sun to get you to sign on the doted line soon as your out of the store they could careless about you. read more

Take a look and see how the review star numbers have plummeted in the last year. Clear knows Wimax is dying and appears to have given up. We've had Clear since the very beginning in Portland, and speeds have actually decreased steadily, instead of increasing. Towers can get so congested that a "12 Mb/s" connection can drop down to 5% of that for weeks at a time. Service, which used to be competant and local, is now apparently by script, terrible, and outsourced. I actually had a tech support individual tell me to "rest my modem" to fix bad speeds due to congestion on the local tower. 18 months ago I would have recommended Clear to others. Now, go somewhere else and do not look back. read more
