Our company throws events at different bars in Back Bay area once a month, this time, we went to Clerys on Thurs, Feb 19th, 2016. The following story tells our bad experience now matter how good their foods were or what good drinks they had. Though the bar was about half empty, they started to create a big line around 6:00 PM at the door in that cold weather and as a result, some of our colleagues were not able to get in. I talked to the guy at the door, his manager, and the receptionist lady inside the door and informed them that we are part of one company and we are spending $1000+ and we want to be together (by letting our colleagues in), but that impolite door guy, and disrespectful manager ignored our requests to let our people in. They said to be head counting people who are coming in, which was absolutely not true because the bar was really empty inside. Everyone who was staying inside was shocked once they heard the bar has already created a big line in that cold weather by the door before letting people in because the bar was absolutely empty. What could be that stupid policy of keeping people in line by the door?! The guy at the door was extremely slow (I guess purposely) which prompted our colleagues to leave the scene without having any chance to get in. The story with another colleague was different. She went outside to answer a phone call, but the guy at the door didn't let her in once she came back to join us again! Horrible!!! read more

This is a fun bar, but wow the service is disgustingly bad. Between our server not even coming to the table to take an order, and his attitude after we wanted to order some drinks...I'll never go back. The bartender even sent us away when we tried ordering from him instead. Surprised that such a popular place has such rude, condescending, and spiteful servers. Not a fan. I was here on a friday night. It was nearly midnight and the bar's empty, outside there's a line. go figure. The crowd was less than stellar. I felt like telling half the patrons that high school ended 10 years ago. I like Clerys a lot because I like to dance but it's not as uppity as gypsy bar and not as trashy as liquor store. Its a nice mix between a normal chill bar and fun dance scene. It's always an interesting crowd too. Lots of different types of people. And no cover!!! (that's the best part). I'd say it's a bit more of an older scene compared to Joshua tree which is nice. It's like a better Joshua Tree (bigger, nicer, chiller, older). And no cover, so I'd def recommend it. However, all the dancing is downstairs and there's usually a line. Upstairs is fun too, though, so going downstairs is not always necessary. And another good thing (for girls) is that you can be casual or dress up all cute and you will fit in the crowd either way! read more

Clery's is a great place for a group to go out after work or to grab a quick bite to eat before a show. The setting is casual. The staff are super friendly. The service is great. I'm food picky and can honestly say that I haven't a complaint about anything I've eaten there whether it be a salad, burger, or nachos. read more

I've only been here for lunch so I can't speak to the bar scene at night. The food was good for what it is: above average upscale bar food. Loved the philly finger rolls - I think they were hand made there and not just pulled out of a freezer bag like most places. Also liked the pretzels and cheese dip. Burgers are good as well. As far as negatives - The music selection was atrocious. At one point they played the theme song from Deliverance followed by "Is There Anybody Out There" from The Wall. Didn't really bring the level of energy up in the place. Everyone just sort of stared into their drinks waiting for the misery to end. Footloose followed Pink Floyd and I don't think I've seen a group of people so happy to hear Kenny Loggins. Also - the service wasn't too hot. It took our waitress 20 minutes to bring us our first round of drinks and when she finally got there she brought us the wrong order. Overall, an above average bar/restaurant with some flaws that didn't ruin the experience but that could certainly be worked on. read more

Too bad cannot give zero stars. The place ought to get to get taken over by Rock Bottom, as the names appear to be the wrong way round and at least Rock Bottom would use their wealth to restore it to some sort of decency. The mango chicken bites, should be renamed to MANGY CHICKEN BITS. The nachos are an insult and the fish (haddock???? methinks not) was definitely not a fresh "daily" catch. More like a week old. Clery's food is not bad. The problem arises when you pay your bill. Every time I've eaten there, the bartender's don't give you your full amount of change back. As a matter of fact, they don't give you any coin! It's not like they are giving you the extra amount... they just keep it. If it was a few cents, probably wouldn't bother me, but on 3 occasions, by 3 separate female bartender's this has happened. Keeping almost a dollar of change is incredibly rude. I still over tipped, but won't return to this establishment due to this practice. read more

Clery's is my go to bar for my weekly Stump Trivia fix. Every Wednesday at 8 PM Clery's hosts trivia. The food is decent and I've never had bad service in all the times I've been there. That being said, I have never been to Clery's on a busy weekend night, so I can't comment on how crowded the place gets. I've heard there is often a line out the door. Overall, I find this place to be a great bar for their Wednesday trivia! read more

I'm only giving it 3 stars because the downstairs was closed and we were so disappointed. My friend and I are here in town and just wanted to experience that sweaty basement feeling. The upstairs was very up beat but laid back until these two boys insisted on showing us who was the tougher male and decided to fight eachother. Still the bar was strangely up beat. The food was good. The food was very good. When it came. The waitress didn't put in the orders for half out table til after the first half got theirs. The whole second half of the order was wrong. She only gave us two menues for seven people. The worst part is that a table that came in after us that was admittedly better dressed got all their food before we did. She hovered over them and ignored us the whole time we were there. Clery's New Year's Eve 2011 was a good time, $40 ticket wasn't terrible compared to the rest. Drinks were decent although probably not strong enough and the $20 credit card minimum is a joke. Pretty good crowd of mostly young 20-somethings and the mix of bar atmosphere and dance floor gives everyone what they want. Went here tonight and definitely did not experience any service issues that other people have experienced. There was clearly some kind of big, organized event going on (maybe an office party?) that we were not a part of, but they were still super attentive and served us really quickly. Our waitress was great and answered all of our questions about the menu (ex: what are Wayne Gretzky wings? Answer: half honey mustard, half barbecue). I would 100% go back here. read more

A group of professionals 30+ of age went out on Thursday night. Despite long wait for drinks and not so friendly service, people were having a good time, until a basket of fries caught fire on the table. (Tables have small candle in the middle, waitress placed basket squarely next to the candle). No one from the bar came over to help to distinguish fire. Instead, when fire died out on its own, a manager ran over and started screaming for the group to "Get out! Stop setting fires in my bar!" People were stunned, and tried to explain what happened, but the manager was adamant for the group to leave. After a few more futile attempts to explain to the manager that group was wrongly accused, we had no choice but to leave. Needless to say, that's the last time Cleary had our business. read more

Clery's makes me feel like I'm one hundred years old. The sweaty dance party downstairs on the weekends reminds me of the basement of a umass frat house. There is always some horrific line to the ladies room. It's impossible to get a drink. There is a cover and maybe a line to get in. Downstairs is always a crazy dance party and upstairs theres a lot of room to hang out if you're with a big crowd. The food here was good and fast but the service was terrible. We sat and waited for menus for about 15 minutes, until I got up and got them myself from the hosting booth, while the staff sat around and did nothing. Not to mention, it was not busy at all. Once someone finally came over, we order our drinks but the waiter never asked if we were ready to order. Even after our drinks got to our table, he walked away and came back 10 minutes later. We never got checked on to see if we needed refills or how everything was while the other few tables were waited on hand and foot. read more

I am going to spit this review into two separate parts: Clery's as a place to eat and have a drink and Clery's as a place to out on a weekend night. Clery's is in a great location right between the South End and the Back Bay. It's right off the orange line and a short walk from Copley station (green line). The place itself is nice and pretty unassuming. It's a great place to head to after work with some co-workers to have a drink. Service is pretty good and the staff is generally friendly. The beer and drink selection is great and the food is also pretty good as well They have a good number of TVs, so if you want to watch a game this is a solid place to go. Prices are pretty good and portions follow suit. So if you are looking for a place to have something to eat that's not too far out of the way (should you be the in the area) then Clery's is a good choice. Clery's as a place to go on a weekend night is another story. They are one of many bars in the Boston area that have fake lines. In other words, there will be plenty of space inside, but they maintain a line to make it appear as a happening place. Annoying but sometimes you have to just deal with it. My suggestion is to bring a flask. Once you do finally get in, there will be a line to get downstairs where there is a DJ playing music and you can dance. This line is an actual line as downstairs gets packed on the weekends. Oh and it's hot down there. So if you plan on coming here in the winter time, don't wear a sweater or anything heavy in addition to your jacket. As I said it gets cramped down here and it's a typical club/dance scene. The occasional sketchy guy lurking around groups of girls hoping to pick off the castoff of the group. On more than one occasion, the credit card machine was not working which was highly annoying. That pretty much killed the night and we had to move on to another bar. The one thing I will say is that there isn't a cover which is nice. I am giving this place 4 stars because as I said, if it's not a Friday or Saturday night, this place is great and me and my friends always come in here. Buy a scanner. I am way older than 21 and was somehow denied tonight after being let in multiple times before. The management here SUCKS. He wouldn't even look at my ID but merely said he trusts and supports his staff (the bouncer) who clearly was starting on their first shift. I am 24, that's three years plus 21. And I have never been denied anywhere. Thanks for making us stand in the rain for nothing! Oh, and by the way your pizza tastes like dirt. But how would I know that if I was never let in before? EHHH....I used to work right near here, so we would come here all the time. The food is your standard bar grub, but I think it has gone down hill. As for the bar scene, it's your typical Boston Irish pub. Casual, after-work or sports scene, people in their 20s and 30s. Although the downstairs turns into more of a dance floor on weekend nights. I never understood why there are such long lines to get in. It's not terrible, but I wouldn't wait to go here. read more

We go here every Wednesday night for trivia and always have a great time. The staff is very friendly and the food is decent (we like the sandwiches best). I went here on trivia night (Wednesday) and had really good time. The set up of the place is something you have to get used to but once you're seated (the seating is comfortable) and the apps and drinks are in front of you, its a non-issue (until you have to go pee). The service ws great. The waitresses are very freindly and always smiling, even the ones that weren't serving us. The drinks were fat with alcohol and the appetizers are pretty good, not great, but good. The trivia is what made this place most memorable for me. It gave off a really communal feeling for me among the patrons. Though, given the amount of people that were there that night I can imagine that this place would be way too crowded on a weekend night and the parking is murder (as always in the south end) on a weekday nevermind the weekend. I used to frequent Clery's and have a great time there. Yet in the past few years the bar is in steep decline. The "managers" don't give a shit about customer satisfaction and the DJs have this holier than though attitude because management let's them do whatever they want. The line to get downstairs has become absurd and overall the ambiance has suffered from the lack of hospitality and the workers feel like they have the right to mistreat customers because it's a revolving door at this bar. It's clear that customers feel the same way, because in general the bar doesn't fill up like it used to. I was there this past weekend to give it another go and it solidified my opinion: I will not return to Clery's. read more

The bar is nice and young but the service is terrible. From the bartender accusing you of not tipping enough to getting your food after half an hour. I have no problem with the late service( even though I would prefer it being faster) but the bartender was obnoxious. How is it that you DEMAND you be tipped 20% or more(I did leave him a tip for every drink)!! It is your job to serve drinks and customers to pay for it! Was there to watch 1pm NFL games. They sat me in a corner next to a big video screen. Behind the bar were smaller tvs which you really can't see unless you're sitting at the bar. It was frustrating because they sat two groups of people in prime viewing area who weren't even watching the games. It's tough to mess up a turkey club sandwich, but they managed to. The wait staff was attentive, but it wasn't a very good experience. read more
