The service was great, cheap drinks. We ordered a chicken burger and my sister got a tuna burger. The tuna burger is by far superior hands down. The chicken was a bit dry and bland but I didn't put anything on it trying to be healthy and all. The awesome part about this place is that they had wheat buns!! I've been coming to clerys for years and am always excited to be accompanied with great food and vibes. Unfortunately the service was absolutely horrible. The server was rude, didn't come to our table not once to check on us - and I could have named a million things that I wasn't happy with during the time I was there. Just terrible. It's such an indecision bar: -Where should we go? -I don't know. -What are you in the mood for? -I don't know. -::sigh:: Okay, I guess let's go to Clery's. It's that kind of place. Like, you want to go out, but no one can come up with anything, so Clery's. They have decent food -- love the sweet potato fries (but can't eat much else -- where did their veggie burger go?). The beer selection is solid. The dancefloor downstairs carries fond memories of the first time I made out with my friend Scott, which was predicated by his weird friend hitting on me and me trying to sidle up to Scott to prevent it. Add drinks and that equals teh makeouts! But, I digress. The decor's that nice wood and brick sort, the bathrooms are usually relatively clean, and when they open the windows in the spring, it's pretty awesome. But I can't give this place more than three stars, because it's so full of a-holes. It is. I mean, there is just a sea of douchebaggery upon entering, and sometimes you have to be Moses to try to get through it I'll probably still come here occasionally (although probably less now that I have discovered Coda and its magical cheap High Life), but that doesn't mean I will always like it. And there will always be that girl dressed in trendy crap that talks really loud and giggles and drives me insane, or the guy in the golf shirt who thinks everything he says is hilarious because of the giggling girl, but rest assured, bro, it is not. I've been here before but coming on St.Patricks Day I expected it to be super busy and slow service. I was pleasantly surprised with how fast we got in , only waiting in line for about 10 minutes, paid the cover charge $10 to get in and find my friends. Quickly went to the back room and ordered a few beers. We stayed there a couple of hours got some apps it was good fast service even with all the people out for the holiday. My friend and I walked into Clerys during Sunday brunch and it was pretty empty. We should have known that was a sign for things to come. As we were led to our table, we came across a strong scent of bleach that did not go away. The brunch menu was small and there weren't too many brunch options. Where were the pancakes!? I ended up getting the french toast ($13) that tasted like cinnamon buns. To my disappointment, they don't do a side of eggs which was needed to balance the sweetness of the french toast. The waitress was nice but she didn't really check up on us; no water refills and we had to go to her to ask for the check. If you're looking for brunch options around the area, I would stay away. Our firm recently hosted a small event at Clery's. I have been trying to obtain a copy of the receipt so my boss is able to get reimbursed. He cannot locate his receipt for an amount over $1500. Definitely conveniently located since it's right across the road from the office. Celebrated with some co-workers/friends for a birthday and Valentine Day which also conveniently happened to be trivia night. Service was pretty average! We sat at the backbar and had food/drinks there. The bartender was nice. Always available for another drink after you finished one and was great at remembering what everyone ordered to split up the checks appropriately. The nachos were really good, but I was disappointed in the short rib grilled cheese. The pictures on yelp made it look sooooo good, but it wasn't as cheesy as I was hoping it to be. I'm a supportive friend, so I've been wrangled into going to Clery's so that a couple of my girls can find themselves a man.. but standing around I just feel like that dark purple crayon that somehow got put away with the pastel markers. I'm just never comfortable here. Or maybe it's the fact that a prolonged stay at Clerys would require a restraining order or arrest. To the girls of Clerys: Practice flipping your hair and holding a cup of water in your hand in front of the mirror. That way you won't come off as a complete ditz when you fail at this and maybe people won't "accidently" step on your toes when you're wearing your strappy sandals in the middle of winter. I honestly don't get how there's a line around the block whenever I leave here. But whatever. The establishment itself seems cool enough. When a group of 10 people are drinking and order from you in the neighborhood of 50 drinks over an hour or so, when one of them asks you for a water, you do not tell them "sorry, it's going to take a while" and ignore them for the next 15 minutes before returning with the water that took you 15 seconds to pour. The correct answer is, "Sure, I'll get you the drink you want. I know it doesn't cost anything, but you and your friend have probably a $500 tab going, so I will do my job and serve you." Clerys delivers in the 3 phases of the game: casual dinner, sports bar(#MyPLmornings), and college party-esque basement. The basement may not be for everybody but it certainly was a great place to celebrate the 2018 World Series. It's about time for Clerys to get the respect it deserves in the food game. The Clerys tots are absurdly good. Pair that with the spinach salad or the chicken sandwich (wayne Gretzky sauce ever heard of it?) and that's all you need. 8.8/10 pint of Guinness to boot. I can really only compare Clery's to an alcohol-filled 7/11. Its location is convenient, and that's really all there is to it. Just as you will never crave a day-old soggy sandwich from the shelves of a 7/11 around midnight, you will never find yourself wanting to head to Clery's for the quality of their drinks or food. This used to be the default bar for my straight girlfriends and I to start our weekend nights. Being right down the street from Club Cafe, it was our tradition to start our night straight at Clery's before transitioning to homosexual down the avenue at CC. "Ladies, you have exactly 47 minutes to find a husband because in 59 minutes it will be MY turn to do the same." There is nothing special or worthwhile about Clery's that should make it your ultimate destination. There are a few rooms with a bar in each and yet it will always be annoyingly crowded. People WILL be obnoxious. You WILL spill your drink. And you WILL find "that" girl that everyone just absolutely hates. Choo-no who I'm talkin' bout. Most recently I came to Clery's for their trivia night with some fellow Yelpers. The lack of space in their downstairs resulted in the Yelpers huddling in the way back using any movable object as a seat. "Excuse me, are you using that mop bucket?" Trivia was fun, but it was unfortunate that we were completely separated from the actual question area. "Ugh, who wants to bring the answers up to the table? I first came to Clery's many years ago as a youngin', when I had my very first (delicious) midori sour and experienced the "boom boom" room for the first time ever. The downstars is very dark and has decent music. Perfect place to drink one too many and let loose. Over the years, I've come to learn thats bars+good music+ dark spaces= way better than any club. Went to Clery's recently for a friend's birthday party and while I was excited to go, my experience there was far from great. I had known about this spot and been wanting to go there for a while, especially since it seems that there's a gigantic line every time I drive by the place; my rule of thumbs is that reliably good places have lines. Well I guess that I was wrong. Clery's has a very unique setup, which features 3 "rooms" of sorts. The first one you'll see upon entering is the bar area. You'll also notice a dining area on the same floor, in a different room. The kicker for this place though is that there's also a basement which is a dance floor. Thing is, the place is packed and there's a line inside the place to get downstairs. We waited for nearly 30 minutes to go to the basement that day which was rather annoying and frankly not all that worth it. The music was hit or miss and the crowds at the bar were ten people deep. After I managed to get my drinks I swore to myself that no matter how thirsty I got, that I'd never wait in line for another round again. Ever. I'm not sure how this place is during the week but I don't know if I'd return again on a weekend and I can definitely state that it's not a place worth waiting in line for as there's many better bars in the area. The one upside about the place is that if by some miracle you do manage to get a table upstairs, you will get some pretty good table service which will save you a few headaches as the place is big and you guess it... crowded. The crowd there is mixed by most people seemed to up in their 20s and 30s. This has to be one of the most polarizing places I have come across in Boston. Seriously, everyone you talk to either enjoys this place, or can't stand it. I think I am one of the few people who seriously is right in the middle. My gf lives right across the street from Clery's, so I have been there many many times. It's very convenient. it's right outside the Back Bay T. On the surface, Clery's has everyone you would want in a bar...it's not old and dingy looking, relatively clean, decent beer menu, big bar, big seats in the dining area, pretty good pub food (I personally would recommend chowder, as it is some of the best I have tasted in Boston, the wings, the crab cake sliders and the build-your-own-burger menu is good too). The problem with Clery's is the overall atmosphere. The service, while decently paced, is full of attitude. Seriously, I have never gone to this bar and gotten a bartender or a waitress without attitude. The other huge problem is that this place is always, always ALWAYS packed. You can barely hear yourself talk, can never get a seat at the bar. On Friday and Saturday nights there is always a line around the block, mostly to get into the club downstairs, which I have never been to, nor ever want to go, as 1) I am not a club person and 2) I hear it's full of frat boys trying to grind up on unassuming women. I have watched a few football games here on Sunday afternoons and the experience was mostly pleasent. Clery's is a good place to grab a drink around the 5:00 hour after work (before the huge crowds start coming in) or for lunch. The bar is fine. They serve beer, have trivia etc. The one reason it isn't a 4 star, neighborhood bar is the regular bouncer. He thinks he is Batman. His oh so college bouncer attitude, complete with holding your ID next to your face and demanding you remove sunglasses while never, ever smiling or telling a joke, instantly puts you in a bad mood. Yep....bouncers have a job to do but the skilled ones don't take it too seriously until there is a problem. Sober patrons on their way home from work are usually regarded as customers not problems. After a long day of touring, we wanted to stick with someplace casual and close to our hotel and we were not disappointed. It was a relatively quiet weeknight, and the food hit the spot. Dear Chef, Staff, and managers of Clery's Bar & Restaurant, Please do not charge me $9 for a very sloppily made nacho platter. If you're going to start with a handful of chips that are actually quite tasty, it doesn't make sense to put the cheese on one side, the sour cream on top of the other nachos, a big scoop of water salsa in the remaining space, with some peppers interspersed between. Usually, nacho platters work best in layers. In this case, instead what you get is 1/3 of the nachos stuck together, 1/3 of them soggy, and 1/3 just lathered in cream. Oh, and beans would really spruce up the dish. Serving this hot mess in a fancy large white bowl does not amount to fine dining. Additionally, please hire more waitresses on trivia nights. Seeing your waitress every 20 minutes is not ideal. And yes, you have enough money to do this considering the amount of people that show up for said trivia, and order food and drinks. It serves average, edible bar food which provides a greasy sponge upon which you pour your standard low to middle quality beer. The music selection can best be described as pedestrian when it originally came out 10 or more years ago and now seems to border on the sadly ironic taste for nostalgic kitsch. Occasionally, a man will come over the sound system to engage the patrons in a game of trivia. The requisite TVs playing sports are present. The crowd is made up of the slowly bloating guys who were jocks in their prime but have now resigned themselves to button-down oxford shirts, khakis expanding waistlines and second chins, and the bottle blondes who can look past the creeping ravages of time and see husband material. read more

Ugh. Went here on Saturday after an OK (just OK) experience at Lolita's. This place is a total creature feature. We ordered some apps for our party of 6. Waitress was slow, unresponsive, and apparently not very motivated to get a tip. After we sat at the table with empty water glasses and empty app trays, we decided to order shots before heading downstairs to dance. And waited. And waited. After 40 (!!) minutes, we flagged down a guy to find our waitress. "No problem, I'll get her right now" he said. So we waited for him to get her to come over. And we waited. And waited some more. FINALLY, Ms. Grouchypants comes sloping over to us. My girlfriend, never shy, remarks: "We were going to order shots, but it's too late and we want to get downstairs and dance." She shrugged. Um, that would have been at least $50 added onto our tab if we each got a couple shots like we were planning. Good one, waitress. Needless to say, she lost her tip. After that fiasco, we got in line to go downstairs. The dancing/DJ is in the basement and so we had to stand in this awkward line next to everyone else's tables. There was some unbelievable prick of a "bouncer" who was on his phone the whole time, let in all his friends who just waltzed in off the street, etc. Annoying but at least we were in the front of the line. Then he let in 2 of our group. When we said no, there are 6 of us and we want to stick together, he just ignored that and said "either come down or get out of line". Are you kidding me? Two of us went down, leaving the other 4 waiting for about 15 minutes (lots of waiting at this establishment). Then some absolute sleaze comes over and starts hitting on my friend at the very front of the line, touching her arms and hair and telling the bouncer to let "sexy shorty" and her friends downstairs. My friend literally had to push this guy off her. Thankfully though he got her downstairs. The basement is like a middle school dance, with more sweaty frat guys. It is also a complete firetrap. We stayed near the stairs in case of emergency. This is where it got even worse. Some total creep literally circled the group of us for the ENTIRE TIME we were down there. I thought he was going to come up and shank one of us. So gross/weird. The bouncers weren't paying any attention, this guy was legit giving off the weirdest vibes. He had on a coat and a scarf even though this place was boiling and had his face half-covered. I'm sorry but I don't like feeling like cattle being circled by wolves - especially when the wolf in question smells and looks like he escaped from the funny farm. Alas, we missed the movie and walked into Clery's instead. I first went here when I moved to Boston 4 years ago and thought it was possible to conjure up nostalgia, and drunken mistakes. Nostalgia aside, the only mistake was walking in. Granted, we started the night early for Saturday night standards at 9pm. We figured at 9pm we were safely avoiding the overtly desperate yea-dudes and girls who suck face with eachother for the pink collared, hyper masculine meatheads (read: frat boys with finance jobs). 2nd mistake: these folk take their pack of cloned drones out early too. Sad thing is these people are my age, and trying their best at transfering their suburban ideals in my city at Clery's. Anyways it wasn't too busy at this point and we ordered a bottle of wine. I think the waitress was completely blitzed out of her mind (I would be too if I had to work there), as she brought us the wrong bottle and didn't see her again for another 2 hours so she could settle us up and get her shitty tip for making us watch the natives try their best at the mating/courting. By 10pm, the bar was packed and moving freely in the bar area was not easy. Oh and the sound system sucked ass, not only was it so loud I could barely hear my friends distract me from the shit storm that was abound, but the speakers were blown out and feedback was abundant. Finally at 11pm, the bar area relieved itself of the drunkards as they went downstairs to move awkwardly and rub their genitals against eachother (dance) on the dancefloor. Horrible place. If I could give it less than one star I would. Have a fabulous business event a year ago in the basement. Decided this would be a fun chiller spot for my friends and I. If you're interested in viewing intoxicated young locals in their element, this is a good place to do it starting around 10:30pm on a Saturday. On the first floor, there is a pretty consistent stench of cess pool and the floor is sticky (sort of to be expected for a bar like this). The perks of this place is that there is plenty of space to wander around to find a less stinky and sticky place, and it doesn't take long to get yourself a drink. The line for the basement. I don't really understand this Boston phenomenon other than it's to be appreciated that you get to at least wait inside with such unforgiving winter weather. Frankly, it's the biggest waste of time. We stood in line for 45 minutes, and when we finally got towards the front, a bouncer who was literally blocking the entrance to the basement with his leg announced that it would be another 30 minutes before anyone would be let in. At this point it was after 12am, and since bars in this godforsaken town close down by 2am, it seemed like the best thing to do was admit defeat and relinquish that last precious hour of our Saturday night to the people with the brilliant idea to force people to go through an anticlimactic wait. At least they send a server out to take drink orders while you're waiting. One piece of advice: if you do go through with the wait, DO NOT leave anything down there and go upstairs.
