Called Clinton Electric as one outlet in our basement was not working. Was told upfront of the $79 charge which was accepted. Technician was experienced and found the problem. He also checked 3 other outlets on the same circuit. He took about an hour, no parts used except a short piece of wire. He then proceeded to write the invoice, told me he had to charge the prices from his book. The total charge came to $820.00. I sent an email to the manager requesting clarification of the charge. He did call while we were away but I again requested written confirmation of the charge and the reasons for such a ridiculous price which works out to more than $500 an hour. No reply received. Will definitely not be using this company again. read more

Clinton Electric solved my 3 week old issue. I had no electricity in my living room. I called Clinton and they were able to book an appointment immediately. Then they called and said there was a cancellation so they could send a technician earlier. Robert arrived on time. He was professional and explained what he would do and what he was doing. The work was done properly and professionally. The cost was a little high for the amount of time to fix it under an hour. One of the worst contractor experiences in my life. Reading the reviews, I see I'm not the only one. During my consultation and one day job, I witnessed terrible business practices, dishonesty, anger issues, and shoddy workmanship. They left a huge whole in my decorative finish with no intention to address it. When I asked for compensation (someone has to be paid to fix it), the company owner called me and yelled at me. Technician too, dropping cigarette butts and getting angry. I'm a contractor myself and pissing off your client is literally the worst thing you can do. CEC praises their positive reviews and dismiss their negative reviews as being wrong or uniformed consumers. Except we're not, Martin N. Consumers, if you have about $400 to throw away right out of the gate on "dispatch and assessment", more power to you and congratulations on your financial status. Hmmmm, what should I do with my spare time....I know, make up a farce about Clinton Electric Company and write up a negative review about NOT being told of the upfront charges of nearly $400, which is NOT applied to the repair and complain about the cost when the tech is in your kitchen telling you, with straight face, it'll be about $400 BEFORE they even get started. My dishwasher was tripping our breaker. The came out to check - $79 fee to show up and then another $500 for a diagnostic. The guy had about 4 cigarettes, told me I needed a new dishwasher. I too wish I had checked Yelp first - especially because I keep seeing the 'customer service' from the manager, Martin, and I don't find his style very appealing - in fact, it is a major turn off and part of my reason for writing a negative review. I called with a faulty Arc breaker and was told $79 to come out and do a 15 point diagnostic test so it is worth the fee for the diagnostics and then he would show me a 'task list' and the different pricing for the different tasks as they don't get paid by the hour. Without looking at anything and just hearing the problem, he quoted me $589 for the task. Despite the immediate desire to vomit, I was concerned with the safety of my house and decided to just pay it. Turned out it was one outlet that had a heating blanket plugged in so it tripped the arc but my house was wired cheaply with 'stabbed' outlets and to fix the entire house, it would cost over $9000. The one outlet was $500. When I look on angie's list etc... it should not have been more than $200. Glad they were able to get here quickly and Ben was very knowledgeable but I can't help but feel ripped off. read more

Would not recommend. Received call from Clinton Electric after recent Angi's List inquiry. Needed new/replacement roof-mounted attic fan installed in my townhome. Cost for home visit was $39 (originally quoted $79). Technician was nice but didn't seem to know a lot about attic fans. Also didn't know how to determine appropriate attic fan size/CFM's based on home square footage. Price quote was outrageous at $1900 (I ended up paying 1/3 of this quote for my replacement attic fan). Contacted Clinton Electric after technician visit to share my concerns & ask for a partial refund. Never received follow-up. These guys have changed on in the past 6-8 years. Used them back then and they were great. Since then they've adopted a new operating model that is heavy on cost and light on customer service. Because I was heading out of town and therefore was under duress to correct my issue, I had no choice but to accept their quote. This included charging me for their time traveling to and from an electrical supplier in order to pick up the part that I had identified as needing to be replaced when I initially contacted them. So much for coming to the job "with all the necessary equipment to do the work"! Long story short, they charged me $500+ to purchase and then swap out a faulty fixture (fixture cost no more than $100)....15 minutes of actual work... Same exact job cost me $250 6-8 years ago. That's not the end though.... They then slapped their $80 "dispatch fee" on top of the $500+ bringing the new total to over $600! I understand charging that fee to compensate them for travel/time in those instances where someone declines their services, but to not waive it after being hired really tells you all you need to know about their attitude towards customer service. Clinton Electric charged me $659 to replace two switches. They claimed a diagnostic test had to be done at the cost of $315 each. No charge was listed for the switch itself, just the diagnostic and of course the non-refundable charge to come out. Most reputable companies waive that fee when service is performed. In addition to the outrageous price; the ivory switches were replaced with white switches. Repeated calls to Clinton Electric have gone unanswered. read more

My experience with Clinton Electric Company was AMAZING, until it WASN'T !!!!!!!!!!!!!! The electrician Luke advised that he had to leave before finishing the project at my residence because he had personal financial matters that required his attention. He became highly disrespectful and agitated at my suggestion that he call his office and inquire if someone else could continue the work. He chose to repeat his litany of issues and became unhinged at my disinterest in his personal life and especially when I asked him to stop referring to me as "BRO". Luke then chose to further escalate the situation with vulgar and profane language advising that he was just going to remove his wire and leave. The TRAGEDY of this completely unnecessary, highly immature, unprofessional, and insulting behavior is that he chose to represent his company, Clinton Electric Company to its detriment in my home and in the direct presence of 2 other principal owners of other reputable companies and their crews. I am very thankful that my children were not present to witness or hear such reprehensible behavior and language. I had an immediate red flag that may be noteworthy. Upon Luke's initial arrival, he made a rather unusual comment about his co-worker Ben that did work form me the week prior. Luke shared that his co-worker Ben did not have as much experience as himself and that he was the better electrician, especially with older homes. He did say that Ben was at least as good with the limited experience that he had. Truly bizarre and unbelievable!!!! I had a seamless and professional experience with Ben and Clinton Electric Company. In fact, I was very happy with the quality of work and service. I was confident that Ben would return and work on the additional project; however, he was unavailable on the day he was scheduled. Unfortunately for me, Luke was the replacement. In all fairness to Clinton Electric Company and its management, I was pleased with their quick and professional response thanks to Jordan and Eric who responded professionally to address and fix the predicament that Luke created. However, at this point I cannot recommend Clinton Electric Company to any of my friends, neighbors in the community. It would be alarming for a single individual, elderly person, female or family to have a technician with such an aggressive and toxic demeanor in their home. Like seemingly all service providers, pricing was good ridiculous, seeming to bear no real relation to the service performed. Be very cautious of any electrician that tells you they bill by the job not by the hour, but is only willing to disclose those prices once they come out to your home. Think about it - if they stand by their pricing then why cant they send you a list of all the services they provide and the associated pricing on a per job basis so you can get some ballpark figure? Call them and ask for their pricing, they won't tell you I guarantee it. These people ripped me off years ago and im still mad. Especially after having other electrical work done by better people. Basically they came out to my home and replaced a breaker and charged me over 600. They kept tacking on diagnostic fees and service fees and other BS until the price was sky high. The dudes that did the work were cold and threatened to charge even more when I complained. The total work was about 30 minutes. I guarantee there are tons of people who have been ripped off by these people who are too embarrassed to post a review. The whole interaction with these people told me they're used to arguing with people about their pricing, that they knew I'd complain about the bill, and that they knew exactly what to do and say to get me to pay just to get these people out of my home. Be aware! If you have someone from Clinton Electric come out for a FREE quote and they point at your ceiling to tell you where they would place a light, they will try to charge you $268 that day as a "planning and layout fee." I debated writing this review, but it has been over 24 hours since the event and I still have a bad taste in my mouth. I called Clinton Electric and scheduled to have someone come out to my home to quote me for some recessed lighting. I was sure to verify that the quote would be free. When Russell showed up to my home, he was quite cold and not friendly. I started explaining to him that I was interested in getting some recessed lights in our basement. He then responded with "so you don't really know what you want?" I proceeded to tell him that I wasn't 100% sure how many we should have for the space (because I'm not an electrician...). He then told me that if I decided to go with them that they could plan out everything for me and it would cost $268. I was under the impression that "planning and layout" would include something like a drawing of the layout of my basement and specify where my lights would be placed and that I would have to sign off on it before the work began. So, I acknowledged him and proceeded to talk to him about where I was thinking lights would go and where I would not want them. He listened and gave his opinion on where lights would work best by pointing at my ceiling. I originally thought 4-6 lights would satisfy what I needed and after talking to Russell we decided 4 would work best. When I asked about the price he ultimately told me that it would cost over $300 per light and they would not fix any of the drywall (at that price I would expect the drywall to be fixed). I had another quote scheduled for today, so I let Russell know that I would compare the pricing and give them a call if I wanted to proceed with them. He then wrote up my cost estimate and when we were going over everything (here's where it gets good) he tells me that "Today all you are responsible for is $268" ...... excuse me, what? When I questioned the price and told him that I was told this was a free quote he told me that the $268 was the planning and layout fee since he laid out my basement for me. I asked if him pointing at my ceiling was considered planning and layout and he confirmed. I'm not sure if this company regularly swindles people into paying almost $300 for someone to come into their home and quote a job, but that was 100% not going to happen. If going over what a potential customer would like in their home, by pointing at certain spots is not part of a quote: 1. Why do you have to come to my home at all? I could just get prices over the phone 2. Why is that not SPECIFICALLY disclosed? If I had know this from the beginning, I would not have wasted any of his or my time. So, I obviously told him (in the most baffled way possible) "oh no, I will not be paying that." He responded very arrogantly "oh you don't have to pay anything!" and started to quickly grab his things and leave. As he was walking out the door I apologized for the misunderstanding and he responded with "oh, there was no misunderstanding!" and kept walking without even looking back. The fact that he didn't even argue with me tells me that the charge was complete bulls***. It is this kind of shady crap that makes me dread looking for "professionals" to give my business to. I was a little dumbstruck at how the entire thing played, and am still very confused as to how this company has so many wonderful reviews while I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a contractor or any business.
