The cloud forest panini are AMAZING. It's the best sandwiches I tasted so far. Crispy exterior and soft interior, combined with the right ingredients and garlic mayo. They also give you a side of apple slices or potato salad. Their drinks are pretty good too. But for me it's all about the cloud forest panini. I feel like this place is underrated and sort of like a hidden gem. Delta of Venus used to be my go to spot for a quick sandwich but the lines have been quite ridiculous recently. I absolutely love this place. It's quiet, quaint, and cute. And I am a man. And I will go here and do my man studying and eating in this cute place because I love it. It's just a little college cafe that has a wonderful atmosphere and very friendly staff. But honestly, the paninis here are amazing. All I have to do is walk by the front and I'll start craving one. This place is all-right. Kind of an uptight cafe due to the strict looks you get from the owner. Vibes are really different when he's not there because the staff are really laid back and friendly. The best Paninis in all of Davis. So cheap and so yummy! I actually loathe cafés due to my aversion to coffee but I keep coming back here for the food. In fact, I've ordered sandwiches for company lunches and have always received great feedback. My favorite has to be their signature Cloud Forest sandwich. While visiting my daughter in Davis, we were looking for a quick breakfast bite so she took me to this place let me tell you I'm glad she did! I ordered the egg panini with chipotle mayo and a cinnamon vanilla latte. Thank god they were fast since we didn't have much time, the panini was so crunchy and light the egg was fresh and the latte delicious, and the staff was nice too! I've been here on several occasions. I like this place because its located downtown, but in an area that gets less foot traffic, making it a nice place to enjoy a sandwich and beverage outside on a nice warm day. They make decent paninis. You can't really go wrong with any of them, but its definitely something that can be made at home with ease. They roast their own coffee. I've tried their drip blend once and found myself deeply disappointed. While I fully support buying and roasting beans at a local level, the outcome that Could Forest serves doesn't even compare Starbucks' Pike Place roast. They offer a wide variety of drinks. Just don't get their drip coffee, its overtly acidic and leaves your tongue with astringency. The girl working there didn't seem very into her job. Fair enough. But good service would make up for the coffee. I love the location, improve your coffee and food, you're in the right direction! read more

I came here during finals week and it was packed with students. Honestly, this place is exactly my kind of coffeeshop. It has character, quirky and cute decorations (such as a bicycle mounted on the rafters), a cozy interior with a large amount of seats, and a nice outdoor patio seating area. It also was ideal for studying because you can hunker down at a table near an outlet (although they request that you only stay there for 2 hours). However, there was one thing that did not sit well with me about this place: the price. I had a hazelnut soy latte, and it was about 5 dollars for a small. Yes, I realize that I got a flavored drink with a milk alternative and not just plain coffee, but I didn't expect to pay more than I would at Starbucks to get even less. Yes, the quality was better than at Starbucks, but it's still really on the expensive side. My friend got a panini for lunch, and for the price she paid it was not very much food at all. I may come back here and try it again, but as much as I like to I won't be spending a lot of studying time here or else I'll burn a hole in my wallet. read more

One of my favorite lunch spots in Davis. Every time I come I wonder why I don't eat here every day. For $5.75 you get a panini and potato salad or carrots. There's also wifi and they don't seem to mind you hanging out all day with your laptop. I tried the mixed berry smoothie and wasn't impressed (tasted like something at McDonald's) so stay away from that. In addition to sandwiches they also have salads, juices and coffee. My official one word comment about the place is . . . eh! Location/Ambiance: The location is quite convenient for me - roughly 5-10 minutes from my office. The building itself is quaint and has large shade trees in front. Once you go inside, it is not so cute anymore. It is pretty large for a cafe but it is decorated with very small scale things that don't really match the idea of a "cloud forest." Service: The service wasn't bad when we first came in. The server was attentive and we received our food in a decent amount of time. However, we needed to use the restroom and that process was a complete nightmare. You need to have a key to get in. The restroom is located in a smelly hallway - by smelly I mean that smell from an old house that hasn't been aired out in a while...yuck. Anyway, other than that, the service was decent. Food: I ordered a turkey panini. It was okay, nothing to write home about. It was warm, and had a generous amount of filling - perhaps too generous. The meat to veggie ratio was a little off - too much turkey. Overall, I would say I was satisfied with my meal. Value: Not bad for a panini. However, I think that the paninis I order from 3rd and U are so much better for roughly the same price. Plus, Cloud Forest doesn't have any other food besides cold salads and paninis. Apparently, they don't have full kitchen so this is all they can serve. To Return or Not To Return : Ehh, I probably won't return unless they spruce up their menu. read more

I've never actually eaten at this place, but I did run into a small taco stand here last night. Someone told me that the owners of Cloud Forest were selling tacos downtown, so my friends and I stopped by. He was selling chicken and carne asada tacos for $1.25 each or 5 for $5. We all pitched in a buck and waited for our tacos. Heavenly. They were absolutely delicious! He has cilantro and a two types of salsa as sides. The carne asada was warm and delicious and definitely hit the spot! I immediately bought 5 more for my boyfriend to take home. I had to heat them up a bit when I got back home, but they were still super delicious. I used the mild salsa, which was great, tangy with a little bite. The meat was so tender! I tried the mixed berry smoothie. It's pretty good and tastes just like the kind from Costco, if you've ever tried that. It's more tart than super sweet. I got a small, and I was pretty full. It's probably a little larger than a 16 ounce from Jamba. I came here to study, and since it was a really nice day out, sat outside in one of the patio tables. Inside was a little stuffy. I like this place. Their various coffee drinks are very very good. They have local art pieces on the wall for sale which is a nice touch. They have a nice open dining area and a nice patio also which provides a terrific location if you just want to mull around and read. It's in an excellent area where it's quiet and not too many cars are driving by, even in downtown. But the area doesn't seem like it does much for the place in terms of customers because there aren't too many people walking down that area of the block since there are no major restaurants right near it where people park. read more

The Product: The coffee quality is pretty decent here, and I'd say just a little above the average cup. Rarely do I buy food from a cafe, but they really do have good panini's that I've craved during classes. My personal favorite is the Cloud Forest Panini - it is NOT your regular ol' turkey sandwich. The Venue: Small, but a good study cafe. I'd say it's best for those study sessions you want to get between classes. Grab a coffee, a good panini, an outlet, and get stuff done. I only wish they stayed open later. Closing at 7 PM is just horrible for a Davis cafe. If they stayed open later with just a limited menu (say, by closing the "kitchen"), I think they would have plenty of customers in such a great spot in town and possibly capture all the people that couldn't find a seat at Mishka's. Overall: If it's warm out, grab one of the outside seats and get an hour or two of work done. I never found myself here for more than two hours - it's just not one of those cafes where you can easily hunker down for 3+ hours. But as that small haven between classes, it's a great cafe. read more

The place itself is perfect for studying--cozy and quiet but not stiflingly so, like the library or the 24 hour room on campus are. They roast their own coffee, so that's pretty cool. I really like their vanilla lattes, I'm not entirely sure what they do differently from other places. They have a little outdoor patio to sit at and glassware if you plan to stay awhile. I got a lot of studying/papering writing done here during my time as a student; if you plan on doing the same, I don't recommend that you drive. The parking downtown is pretty strict and only allows you to be parked for two hours. I've never had anything to eat here before, so I'm leaving a star off until I do. read more

I got 2 paninis and a large orange juice. Food/Drinks: The orange juice tasted fresh. I thought that the paninis were well made; the bread was crisp but not burnt. Portion sizes were a bit underwhelming; the paninis had only a few slices of deli meat, so there was more bread than filling. The "large" orange juice looked smaller than a medium size at Jamba. Since small is listed as 12 oz, and medium as 16 oz, I want to say that the large is a 20 oz (size wasn't listed on the menu) but it didn't look like a 20 oz. I was offered a side of baby carrots or potato salad with each panini, but both sides were literally bite sized. Form a circle with your index finger and thumb. That's how big the container was. (+0.5 stars) Service: Although a lot of the reviews complained about the owner, but I was fortunate enough to have a good experience with him. He was polite and talked about the details of our order when we had trouble deciding. Service was slow unfortunately; it took a while for us to receive our 2 paninis. Especially since the menu wasn't overly complicated.. (+0.5 stars) Atmosphere: Nice and quiet, air conditioned. Menu was placed in a weird spot; I walked in and looked above the cash register, where you would expect the menu to be. I was confused when all I saw were some bags. The owner smiled and pointed above the entrance. "Oh.. okay." So, you would walk in from the entrance, and then turn around 180 to face your exit to read the menu. Felt really strange to be looking back where you just came from. (+1 stars) Price: This is where I get turned off. 2 Paninis 1 Orange juice came out to be $22. Darn expensive considering the food was alright, but not amazing. Recommendation: Probably not coming back.. read more

Food here is great, and have missed it a lot since graduating a few years ago. Disappointed to come back seeing signs with new rules and regulations of how you spend time in the cafe. I went there for breakfast and for a morning study session. I tried getting internet access for 2 devices for my note-taking style to be told I can only have one access code because "we don't want people working here too long". I stopped by here for the first time last week to wait for a meeting I had at 3. It was buzzing but not too busy. The workers seemed nice enough, though not super friendly. No problem. I felt no pressure as I looked at their beautiful menu for something to eat. I love the simplicity of this place, but most of all I love their prices. For $5.50 I expected kind of a small salad but it was actually really delicious and filling. They really seem to put care into making their food. I wish I had put in the extra quarter for a panini, though, because some people next to me got all paninis and they looked HUGE! Definitely beats getting Subway! I can't wait to go back here next and get a panini and maybe a smoothie, too! Super vegetarian friendly but a good spread of meats as well. read more

This place is great for a few reasons: 1. Quiet, so it's easy to get work done without being distracted. 2. Spacious, unlike my favorite place, Mishka's. So, it's easy to get a table. 3. Comfortable and quiet outdoor seating beside big trees. Although it's on the street, there's very little walking/driving traffic, so you can chat with friends and hear everything they say. A few other comments: 1. Free wi-fi 2. The restroom is tricky, but the 2 times I've used it there were no unpleasant smells anywhere. The Cloud Forest Panini was amazing, although the price was a little on the high side for a town full of broke college students. Much less crowded than Mishka's; I could actually get a table here without planning ahead. It was also significantly quieter, which allowed me to focus on my work more without having to drown out the noise using earbuds. Overall, a bit pricey, but mostly worth it.
