I have noticed recently that many of the plumbers out there are using an unethical tactic to extort money. Basically what they do is demand an upfront payment before they come on site. Usually around $90. Then once they are onsite tell you it will be $200 additional for them to do the job. So you are stuck either paying them way too much, or they leave, and you either loose your original deposit, or have to fight to get it back. Juan gave me a flat rate. He came out and fixed the problem. He cleaned up the entire area before he left. He work shoe coverings each time he entered our house. Understandably he is busy. The water main broke again today. I called Juan. Initially and with regret he advised he was booked up until Friday. Then in mid conversation advised he's going to make it possible to come over. Literally 15 minutes later he was in the driveway and started working on the break with his partner. Because of the depth and the confined space he had to work in, it took an hour + to get to break. He repaired it, checked, adjusted the main water pressure, and cleaned up the work area well. I fully expected him to charge something because of the fact he had someone there to help whom he was paying and because of the time required to complete the repair. Fast response by Juan, arrived within 15mins ETA after I called them. They did a great job repairing a copper pipe in less than 1 hour, they kindly cleaned the dirt after the service was completed, they are polite. Not sure about the price for these services, a handyman would charge $100 per hour + parts, Juan changed per "project" which was 4x more expensive if I had it done with a local handyman per hour, however, I decided to hire a professional, like Juan, maybe this explains the price. I had a clogged kitchen sink and it was driving me crazy. If I washed a sink full of dishes the water and soap would back up. Even running the garbage disposal wouldn't clear it, water would shoot up out of the other side of the sink like a bidet and I would get soaked with dirty water. I went on Yelp projects looking for a plumber. Many responded but Juan responded first. I talked to a few of the other plumbers to get an idea of price. Juan was able to come out in a couple and and he did. He gave me a very reasonable price and he and his co-worker got to work and quickly cleared the clog from the cleanout. I hired him to fix a faucet. He bought a faucet from home depot and installed it. I think that was a lame excuse because the caulk is to prevent leaks, not to provide support the faucet so that it doesn't move. Then he started blaming the faucet and said "it was a cheap plastic faucet that nobody uses" and he will install a more expensive one. I suspected he is not being honest told him I will hire someone to fix his work. Indeed, I then hired "on-time plumbing" and they fixed the same faucet and noted it was improperly installed. He eventually refunded me the labor fee, though. read more
