Visiting from New York and I decided to walk to High Street Place Food Hall from South Station. While on my way to the food hall, the photos of Clover's falafel plastered on their windows caught my attention. I did look at all options at the food hall, but ultimately turned around and walked back to Clover next door. I'm glad I did. Delicious locally-sourced sandwiches are their speciality. I tried their sandwich called The Zucchini - it seemed like the sandwich that they were showcasing at the moment. It was delicious! The glazed tofu had a great texture and was topped with fresh zucchini and corn. Usually a tofu sandwich is buried on the menu, but I'm glad they listed the tofu zucchini sandwich as the very first option. I also ordered a side of falafel and the chickpeas were fried to perfection and served with flavorful tahini. Some of the signage in the restaurant lists the specific farms and towns that the ingredients come from - it's great to know that the food that you're eating is locally grown. Another sign says "everything we hand you is compostable" and it's great to know that Clover supports sustainability and tries to minimize waste. The space and location seem great, but there weren't any other customers when I dined in at 5:30pm. A few people stopped in and looked at the menu, but ultimately didn't order. In terms of the quality of the food, this is a restaurant that should probably be packed - but for whatever reason isn't. Strangely, there's an office conference room in the middle of the restaurant - maybe they rent out the space for meetings? Not sure. The only other feedback is that I know the restaurant is called Clover Food Lab. The word "lab" makes me think that they are experimenting with flavors and ingredients, but there's also a connotation with the word "lab" as being unnatural (i.e. food grown in a lab) - but, in this case, that couldn't be farther from the truth. I was really bummed to hear that Clover would be closing, as their unique offerings are such a welcome lunch option in downtown Boston. So, I was equally thrilled when they pivoted and decided to keep some of their Boston locations. I had to stop in for the falafel plate, one of my favorite lunch options in the area. Lovely food and very kind staff! Last week I ordered a blueberry lemonade and a zucchini sandwich at the Financial District location. I was super bummed when I was told they just sold out of zuke sandwiches. They immediately credited me back but then surprised me by offering to make me a free one with the same ingredients, just subbing out the tofu since they were out of that. Such a nice surprise, it made my day! The sandwich was fantastic (and lemonade too), soft pita, good mayo, fresh zucchini. The sandwich was a party in my mouth ;-) Plus they were sampling a side salad and a new matcha drink, so I got to try other items on the menu too. Great food but sorely disappointed that they put potato chips (?) on top of the cup of vegetable stew I ordered. They were willing to remove it but refused to add more soup! Sorry but that's a rip off. The entire staff argued that not filling the container to the top is their practice. The food cost for an extra 2 Tablespoons of soup is LESS THAN A PENNY! So for this reason, I say, skip this plaice and their nonsensical way of making it seem as if you received a FULL cup of soup by...filling it WITH POTATO CHIPS. What started as a food truck with a blog (remember blogs?) has been going strong as a full blown brick and mortar chain (with a blog). I wish I could tell you more about their menu but I never seem to get past the simple egg sandwich. Egg nicely poached and seasoned, slice of tomato and a slice of sharp cheese in a fresh pita. Very unhappy with the (lack of) service this morning. The 1 crew member working was obviously overwhelmed by the 2 people in the restaurant at 7:10. He had to remake the eggs which were not cooked through, "7 or 8 minutes" he said and put another pan of water on the cooktop. 20 minutes later the other customer said to just hand him an egg and he would cook it. I took my Impossible sausage and cheese (still no egg) and coffee and headed to my office (late for work). Breakfast and laptop this morning at Clover's location in the Financial District. I was impressed from the time I walked in and was greeted by a friendly and helpful staff member. I had no idea what I wanted, but the shirt the young lady was wearing advertised a sausage and egg and cheese sandwich, so I had one of those. Great choice. The egg was soft boiled and served on top a spicy sausage patty and some sharp cheddar cheese on a cute fluffy pita bread. And here's the kicker, the sausage is "impossible meat" made from plants. It tasted just like sausage to me! And the soft boiled egg? An awesome alternative to a fried egg. With it, a cup of their cafe au lait which was delicious even if it was extremely hot. I love the concept of Clover (local! sustainable! seasonal! experimental!), but I really wasn't blown away by the food. It isn't bad by any means, but it just isn't anything outstanding. I got the egg and eggplant platter, and I thought the components were all ok but not very memorable - my favorite part was probably the fried eggplant, though it was a little bland without the tahini sauce. My friend got the sandwich version of this and it completely fell apart due to the sheer amount of sauce. I also tried some of the chickpea fritters and they seemed just ok - not bad but not the best falafel I've had either. I'm not sure why some people view Clover as healthy just because it's vegetarian, as many items are fried and/or doused in sauce. I can definitely see myself coming back if I'm in the area and want a quick and not-too-filling meal though. Unsure whether I'm a fan or not of the item names on the menu (e.g. egg and eggplant instead of sabich and chickpea fritter instead of falafel) - I can't decide if it's avoiding "sounding foreign" to make the food seem more palatable to a certain demographic or if it's avoiding the pitfall of false authenticity. My fav is the chick pea fritter sammich - this thing is jam packed with falafel, pickled veggies, and hummus stuffed into a whole wheat pita . NOM. I also like their breakfast sammich, and muffins. I love clover. I've loved clover since the food truck only days! So when there was one next to my office, I was stoked. Like most, I started with the chickpea fritter and rosemary fries. I'd say the best value is in the breakfast. I used to work in the same building and came here pretty often for breakfast when it first opened. My go-to was (is?) the breakfast sandwich with a pour-over coffee. Soft-boiled egg is tasty, bread is on point. The cheese and tomato really big it together. The breakfast sandwich is as good as any I've had in Boston. The pour-over coffee takes a couple of minutes to make, but always worth the wait. Lunch is a bad value and usually a mad house. You'll walk away paying somewhere between $12-$15 for a sandwich or a platter. Sandwiches are usually pretty good (all the mushroom ones are usually tasty!), but pricey. The platters are always a little messy and underwhelming. Most of the food there is fried. Tasty, but fried. It messes with you because your thinking- its vegetables its good for you- but then you realize its fried. I can't stand the system of someone randomly standing then calling me over to take my order. I usually get a breakfast sandwich here. Warm pjta, soft boiled egg, cheese, and tomato. Basic, filling, healthy, yummy. NOW they have a pepper breakfast sandwich. Almost the same thing but Mexican cheese, Sriracha sauce and add peppers. Even better! They always have two choices of pour over. This can take longer but welll worth it. If you actually enjoy coffee you can taste the difference. Don't get uppity about it. If you don't want to wait and cover your coffee so you can't taste it, just go somewhere else. Came here super hungry in the morning. I got a popover, an apple muffin, and a classic breakfast sandwich, and an orange juice. I'd had the popover before but none of the other stuff. Everything was marvelous. The popover was crisp on the outside, and soft and gooey on the inside. The apple muffin delicious, I only regret not putting butter on it. The breakfast sandwich a poached egg, tomato, and I think Swiss cheese inside a hot pita pocket. It was good but I prefer the popover breakfast sandwich I'd gotten before. The orange was incredible. Stopped into the newly launched Clover spot at 160 Federal Street for breakfast this morning. The space is absolutely gorgeous. 2300 square feet with 88 seats. Open kitchen concept and loads of friendly faces taking orders on mobile devices to keep the lines to a minimum. I ordered the oatmeal with rhubarb compote. The compote itself was suuuper tart, but mixed in with the oatmeal, it made for a really nice, semi-sweet/semi-tart, hearty mix of goodness in my belly. I can't wait to frequent this location for a heart-healthy breakfast and lunch before and during my workday. Super convenient location! read more

A year after my original review I thought it was time for an update. I still love Clover and come here a few times a week. It's become my go to spot for lunches and with the app, it's now faster than ever (though, you can't seem to order a sandwich & side soup with it). The food is fresh, local, and delicious, the staff is friendly, and most importantly, they are always innovating - I love how the menu items change with the seasons. It keeps me interested, and I'm rarely disappointed by the way they taste! A few years later and I finally visit their standalone shop right across the street from South Station. I love this place- their ethos, the food, and the decor. Something different from your Starbucks. After arriving in Boston this was one of the first places that I tried. It has a lovely decor and right away you can see it's a trendy place that a menu that's very friendly to those with dietary restrictions. I tried the "Impossible Meatballs" since I heard my coworkers raving about it. Seeing as "plant-based" meat alternatives is only getting more popular (recently tried the A&W Beyond Meat burger) I knew I had to try it out. Verdict: The texture is spot on; however, the taste is not quite there yet. It's not bad at all, but I honestly can't say "you can't taste the difference", because you can. It's good nonetheless and is a great way to switch it up and to have a meatless meal. I also had their overnight oats - it's good, but it's still a bit of a heavy breakfast, seeing as it's around 550 calories. Seems like it has healthy ingredients and fats though. Solid option for wholesome lunch in the financial district. I think my biggest gripe about this place is that they try a little too hard to be different. My second gripe is the pricing. I walked in to just look at the menu to see if anything appealed to me, and was approached by two employees within seconds asking to help me order. I really just wanted to use the tablet and browse on my own. There was only one tablet, so I immediately felt pressured to order quickly in case someone lined up behind me to order. Service was friendly and adequate, but the people behind the counter were asking everyone waiting what they ordered - nice of them to stay on top of things, but it signals to me that they frequently lose track of orders, despite the fancy tablet-based POS system. The food was prepared relatively quickly and handed to me wrapped in paper but without a bag or anything else, despite the fact that I had selected "to go." Maybe that's their practice to save packaging materials. I had the Menino BLT (not real bacon) and a lemonade. The lemonade was just the right amount of sweet, not overly sugary like many other lunch places serve, and the sandwich was very tasty, although a little bland compared to an actual BLT. Still, I would make it a frequently lunch option if the price was a little more reasonable. The total: $12.50. Seems like a lot for a small sandwich and a small lemonade. It's at the high end of the standard FiDi lunch price range (in my mind, $9 to $12), but it lacks anything on the side to make it feel like a better value. At Cosi, I can get a small sandwich and a soup for less. I'm willing to pay more for healthier options, but pay more for less food and less taste? Not often. I would be back more if they offered some side options or a larger sandwich for the same price. I will give it another try to see if different menu items offer more value for the money. read more

I'll just come out here and say it: I avoided Clover because I thought it was vegan. I am not anti vegan by any means, I just like my dairy. (turns out they are actually VEGETARIAN with many vegan options). I've lived in Boston for 8 years and decided to try this place for lunch because the reviews were so good, and my fiancé recently became vegetarian so I've been off meat for a while and thought now's as good a time as ever to finally try Clover. I had the chickpea fritter platter, which was essentially a falafel plate. Total after tax was exactly $10, which is great if you're paying in cash. I was SO impressed by how good this food was. The falafel was extremely crunchy. It came with lightly pickled carrots and red cabbage, pickles, a cucumber/tomato salad, hummus, and two rotating sides. The pickled vegetables were not overpowering but both had an excellent flavor. The side dishes I received were a kale and potato salad and more carrots, different preparation this time. Everything was honestly delicious. I'd say to get the plates you should be a big vegetable fan, but I honestly love my veggies, so this was heavenly. I will definitely be back--next time with my fiancé! Oh, and if you care: everything is compostable, so thumbs up to the environment too. EDIT: Not 10 minutes after I published this review, someone on Clover's social media team reached out to me thanking me for my review and stating that 90% of their customers do eat meat--Clover just tries to get everyone to appreciate vegetables a little more and reduce greenhouse gasses.
