Visiting from Chicago. Good place to go to watch the Blackhawks games. Good atmosphere with strong mixed drinks and large shots. The food is nothing to write home about, it's good but not great. We would come back. 3-4 stars for the atmosphere. 2 stars for the food. On a side note, we sat at the bar behind the beer tappers and apparently a keg was out and I definitely got sprayed with beer from the tap. . . I was surprised I was not offered anything else, just a towel that smelled like bleach to wipe my face off. Take it how you will. read more

Typical freezer to fryer bar food. Our grilled pork chop was extremely dry and flavorless, well tasted like it had freezer burn. Also, chips came directly from a bag of Krunchers. I guess the more you drink, the less you would be able to delineate how poor the food is. read more

My husband and I took a break from sightseeing and grabbed a drink here. Our experience was just okay. The bartender was nice but it took a while to get his attention. They were two other people at the bar besides us so it's not like he was busy. We decided to have an appetizer here. After asking three times for a menu, we finally got one. In his defense, I don't think he heard us when we asked. We ordered the nachos and they were just okay. Nothing exciting, just chips, cheese, a few tomatoes, like a spoonful of black beans, and sour cream. I wanted to ask for salsa to make them more palatable but the bartender never came back. Overall, the vibe here was cool with a great beer selection but the service was lacking. read more

Coaches pros & cons. Pro: good daily drink specials. Con: smoking allowed. Pro: great food & service. Con: gets crowded. Pro: wonderful hummus appetizer garnished with diced cucumber, tomato, red onion and olive oil and served with lots of warm pita bread points. Pro: a truly awesome Pesto burger with pesto and provolone. Pro: Coaches cheesesteak sandwich consisting of thin slices of roast beef topped with jalapenos, BACON & cheddar cheese sauce on a toasted French roll. Con: I could easily eat two of these but I hope I never do. This is a truly perfect sandwich in my humble opinion. Anyway, the pros by far outweigh the cons so despite the smoke I will continue to frequent Coaches........frequently. read more

I don't do reviews because it's not my style and I rarely go out. I'm in the restaurant business myself and not a fan of dining and then reviewing, during my rare downtime. All that said, I just had to take a minute to say that Coaches is a friendly pub and sports bar with excellent food and genuine service. Coaches has grown on me over the past year - and now, it's one of my bars of choice for casual nights out with friends. As others have already noted, it's nothing fancy, no frills, and nowhere near as pretentious as B&B or Libertine, BUT it is clean, well-priced, with friendly service - and imagine this - a place where you can ACTUALLY have a conversation and hear what's being said. It's a dive sports bar, but you know what? IT'S OUR DIVE SPORTS BAR AND WE LOVE IT! After any game or event down town, this is the place for late evening food and drinks. Not to mention, if you stop in while the grill is hot, this place has the BEST CHAR-GRILLED BURGER IN INDY! Ask for the Tom's NOM-NOM burger. You will not be disappointed. Get the chicken fingers--they may be the best that I've ever eaten, anywhere. The fingers are lightly breaded and moist, and came out piping hot. In town for the B1G Championship game and enjoyed a tasty lunch on my way out. Good portions and delicious food. The prime rib on the Coaches Cheese Steak was perfect and very fresh. I used to like this bar, until I was told by a bartender that our extended wait (despite the small crowd) was because my group looked like we did not tip well (?!?!). Prior to that, a girl (not with our group) threw up on the floor next to the bar and was passed out. The girl's friend asked the bartender if she could call an ambulance or assist, and the bartender told her to carry her outside because she was busy. The vomit remained on the floor by the bar for at least another hour (maybe longer. We left), well after the ambulance (called by the girl's friend) arrived. read more

Coaches Tavern is a classic sports bar in a great location downtown Indy. I frequent both Coaches and the neighboring bar O'Reilly's when I want to save some cash downtown. You will not find a bar downtown that pours stronger drinks for less money. Sometimes I have a hard time drinking because the cocktails are so stiff (this is a big deal since I enjoy my booze). I have sorta made this my traditional watering hole for pre-game festivities. The location is perfect for grabbing a quick drink before entering the expensive-booze-laden Banker's Life Fieldhouse. I am always served very promptly and the drink specials routinely have something I desire. I have yet to try food but I have heard good things from the regulars. Best part of all, the staff is very friendly and pays good attention to your drink level. I am not sure what is missing but something keeps me from giving five stars. Maybe it is the hang over that ensues from drinking their well-vodka? read more
