I will start with the truth, as raw and harsh, as it maybe....I am a pizza snob. I was born and raised outside the Bronx NY, and have traveled the world, eating my favorite food....pizza :) So read d any of my pizza reviews at your own risk! The good ~The service was AWESOME! Really friendly staff, they all joke round with the customers :) ~They bake their pizza with this special coal (Anthracite) mined in Western PA, and is smokeless, and releases few chemicals...it gives the pizza that "charred" flavor ~They make a big deal about the coal they use, their sauce and their mozzarella is sliced instead of shredded (The charred flavor was alright, I wasn't impressed w/ the mozzarella LOL) ~The margherita pizza with the basil is pretty ok :) We had half w/ pepperoni and that was more flavorful The what could be better ~They don't have any garlic powder on the table (they have parmesan cheese, and red pepper, but no garlic....WHAT?!) First sign of a non-Italian pizza place.... ~The sauce...you can chose from three different sauces 1. Classic (I could taste the sugar in the classic sauce) 2. The Signature which is supposed to be a half sweet sauce 3. The Spicy sauce, which also taste a little sweet....I am a firm believer that pizza sauce should taste savory, NOT sweet. Fail on the sauce. The weird ~The warm grilled Caesar salad....I love NY style salad pizza, but there's something palatably weird about warm lettuce.... We were in the area doing some furniture shopping and it was getting late... decided to stop by coal fire since it's in the same complex. We were led to our booth and given our water. My husband ordered calamari to start, and an 8inch Rueben as his main dish. I had the meatballs with angel hair pasta. We were wondering why the calmari had no dipping sauce, and after we tasted it...we both nodded to each other that it's cos it was tasty- it didn't need any sauce! Calamari was delicious. My pasta came with a Caesar salad, and I always like it when an entree comes with a salad! Caesar salad was basic, but good! He enjoyed his sandwich, and I enjoyed my meatballs and pasta! It was a generous serving with 4 meatballs...reminded me of childhood when I was happy with my spaghetti and meatballs. Our server was very good too. After several drive-bys I noticed the Restaurant was open today (actually the nice girl at the front desk told me it opened two days ago). I had to try it so even though I was in a rush I ordered a pizza to go. There were three types of pizza sauce to choose from. The classic, then there was the sweet/spicy (signature) and then the spicy. I got the signature with fresh mushrooms. It was ok I guess. Too sweet for my taste. I'll probably try again and next time get the pizza with spicy sauce along with a grilled caesar salad which looked really good ( they grill the whole romaine-it's not chopped). I don't think this place will be on my list of favorite Italian places though. I normally prefer pizza from an electric oven. read more

I now update my previous review. I used to drive 2 hours for good pizza. I found it just outside of Cumberland MD. off the interstate at a place that used to be called "Uncle Tucker's Pizza Cellar". It is now called "Puccini's". Well, no more 2 hour drives! I now declare under penalty of law that Coal Fire has the best pizza I have ever eaten! From the crisp crust (even when ordered for take out and left to sit in the box 30 minutes), to the toppings, to the important, oh so important, cooking process. The Coal fire gives this pizza a unique, smokey flavor that I have never tasted before. Subtle it is, but it really improves the flavor. I had the Margerita (spelling?), topped with extra pepperoni, sun dried tomato and lots of basil, it was near perfection! I have now eaten in and taken out several times, and with the exception of a couple of quirks in the service I find this joint fantastic! Go there and eat! The final test...the morning after. I opened the fridge, pulled out the leftovers and dug in. Awesome! No heating required. This is the pizza to have in the fridge for that "morning after". I sure hope they can keep it up, and still hope they will get a top of the line pepperoni to make it perfect! I admit I am a pepperoni snob. It is interesting that they have a signature pizza called the "Ring of Fire", as I happen to own a local restaurant named "Ring of Fire". We don't make pizza there! read more

I should start this review off by saying that I grew up on true NY style pizza and I'm partial to that. That being said, I love wood burning oven cooked pizza and the char it gets. We went to Coal Fire on a Friday night after we bought a deal from a certain deal site that wants you to be "social". We were greeted and seated quickly since the restaurant wasn't all that busy at this point (around 6:00p). One thing to note is that the menu is fairly limited. Granted this is a pizza shop primarily, but we were expecting to see more "signature" pies. The restaurant seems to want you to go with your wild side and build you pie from scratch. There are three sauce choices and probably a good 15-20 toppings available. Prices varied from reasonable to a bit ridiculous for some. $2 for chopped basil? Our waitress was friendly and took our order quickly. Unfortunately that's where we had some issues. The restaurant uses food runners (who almost actually run back and forth) to deliver food. Our salad came to the table, but we didn't have plates. It took 5 minutes to slow someone down enough to ask for them. The salad was a basic salad, nothing exciting to talk about. The ingredients were all fresh, nothing mealy or slimy and brown. The empty salad plates and bowl sat on the table for a good 5 minutes and no one came over to clear it. Another food runner came out with our pizza and ran off without giving us plates. Another 5 minutes went by before we were finally able to grab a hostess that was running by and ask her to get them. The plates we got had food stuck to them (it happens), so the race to grab someone started again. Our waitress came by and we mentioned that we needed new plates. She took off to get them, but someone else stopped by after she hadn't come back in 3 minutes and we asked them for plates. Finally now we had plates and could eat now that our pizza wasn't hot anymore. Our waitress came back after we were halfway finished eating with plates and looked confused about how we had plates. Anyway, enough about service... The pizza itself was about average. We ordered the signature sauce and found it to be too sweet. The amount of toppings on the pizza were about right and it had just the right amount of char. For the price, we'd probably try it again, but most likely just for takeout. Long story short, it's a decent pizza shop, but it has some work to be done. The food is about average, but so is the price. read more

This is a pizza and pasta place. There's a bar and nice ambiance... however I am not a fan of the pizza. Granted I am not a fan of sweet sauces on pizza. So this place was not for me. Certainly torn between 1, 2 and 3 stars... Three because the place has potential and has been okay in the past, 1 02 because the pizza is just so-so for me for a pizza joint and the servicde was frustratingly amateur. The pizza is different and the crust tasty from the brick oven but the house sauce is just too sweet and it all just tasted like my kids made it... The shoestring fries and onion rings are good... The wings are anti-wings... definitely not your standard buffalo hot wings, baked in a dish with onions on top of pita slices... hmmm.... The beer was not real icy cold either... On the night we were there, the service was pretty weak and our waitress was young and appeared untrained to the basics. Our apps came before we had plates or silverware set-ups.. the food runner came back with plates and I eventually went over to the hostess stand where, ironically, she was rolling silverware set-ups in napkins next to our table but didn't observe us sitting with food and no silver.... We also had beer bottles gathering on the table and I asked the waitress to clear them with the delivery of a third round, joking that I would prefer not to have my neighbors see how much we were drinking. So now maybe she just thinks I want my bottles cleared but it's not going to get folded in her routine. I'll go again but the place just does not beg me to return. read more

I'm always excited to try a new gluten-free pizza option. My first impression of Coalfire pizza was fantastic. The amazing smell greeted me as we walked in, we were further greeted by very friendly employees and promptly seated. Our waitress was very nice, and I liked the fact they have three different sauce options. I was also impressed that CoalFire makes their own cheese, and their own sausage. I ordered the g-f with roasted red peppers and sausage. Here's the thing - the pizza was MUCH better the next day when I heated it up at home. In the restaurant the pizza had actually not been fully baked, but I just didn't have the energy to complain (partially because my friend and I were having a pretty serious discussion, so distracting from that would have been rude and, well, distracting). The sausage was decent, although NOT attractive, but I did LOVE the cheese!! Oh, and the order of fries was tasty, but the portion was ridiculously ginormous! read more

This place has been here for five years. Can't believe I just discovered it. This is a nice place. Pleasant ambiance. Good, pleasant service. Charming patio seating. Plenty big enough to move around with no narrow aisles. They take the big three credit cards. Our waitress was really a picture of grace. She made the experience so pleasant, non intrusive but yet never leaving us any feeling of neglect. Our food was Really good too. It was the thin crust pizza and it was delish! Not overfilling like a sledgehammer but not underdone. You walk away having appreciated the flavor if the meal, and you won't feel hungry. I call in for pick up for carry out from the cold fire in kentlands. A young woMAN by the name of Handsa answered. She was very helpful in taking my order and offered suggestions for my volgonese. I really appreciate that. When I went in to pick up my Boulogne, I was greeted by Handsa at the pickup counter. She had a bubbly personality that made me perk up. I really like oven baked pizza! So when my co-workers took me here, i had pretty high expectations and was not disappointed. They have 2 sizes: regular and large. I can't even fathom trying to finish a regular, so I usually have to share the pizza with someone else. They give three choices of tomato sauces: Classic (pretty regular), Signature (a little sweet, a little spicy), and the Spicy (self-explanatory). The Signature sauce is hands down the one I would go with since I love sweets and I can only handle a little bit of spicy. :) I don't think I've tasted any other pizza sauce quite like this one. Then you can choose toppings ($1.50 each). I really like meats on my pizza, so I usually get sausage. They recommend up to two, so I like to add a little bit of veggie (even though I hate vegetables haha) with sun-dried tomatoes. I've also tried a pizza with the banana peppers once and that was pretty good as well. Now when the pizza comes out, it's thin crusted and crunchy (yes!). It's slightly burned, so it has a nice smokey taste to it. Every topping nicely complimented the sweet and spicy sauce. What more can I ask for in a customized oven-baked pizza? :) read more

Coal Fire uses very good quality products. The problem is their food lacks flavor. They need to add some more salt, onion powder, garlic, paprika...whatever is needed to get more flavor in their food. The foundation is there, but the food falls flat due to the lack of flavor. Prices are decent and the portion sizes are good. I really their pizza; they put a good amount of cheese and the dough taste good. Just add some seasoning to your food! read more

Went here with the family and the place is average. The pizza is decent, but my major issue was we ordered sausage and cheese and were lucky to get 1 or 2 sausage pieces per slice. More toppings please. I though the sauce was good. I had the sweet and spicy. Another concern was the service. We ordered 3 pizzas and one pizza was completely incorrect. Mistakes happen, but when you don't write down the order the responsibility is on the server. What was worse, the server tried to bill us for the pizza that came out incorrect,. Not wise...... This past weekend was the first time me and my boyfriend went to the Coal Fire Pizza in Gaithersburg, Md. My boyfriend got pizza with ground beef and sweet sauce, and I got pizza with 3 toppings: pepperoni, red onions, and sweet peppers -- and I got the SPICY sauce. WOW!! Honestly, this was one of the most flavorful and delicious pizzas I've ever had. I am a big pizza lover and a picky eater -- and despite me being a fan of big thick chewy crust, this more medium-to-thin crust was truly charred to perfection. And even though the menu recommends limiting yourself to 2 toppings on a pizza, I got 3 toppings, and the pizza was NOT soggy -- the bottom was a perfect balance of being crisp, but slightly chewy. I ate the 1st slice of pizza with a fork and knife because it was hot, but after that I was able to eat the rest of the slices with my hands. The smaller 12" pizza was WAY more than enough pizza for one person - so I brought back 4 slices to my home. The next day I preheated my oven to 400 degrees, and then baked those slices for 5 minutes at that temperature -- it was perfection. I * HIGHLY * recommend this place and look forward to going there again. For those who complained that the regular sauce or the sweet sauce was "not all that", please do try the SPICY sauce - it is not "mouth on fire" hot - I'd say it's a medium spicy, it was so tasty :) p.s. - today I posted a photo of our 2 pizzas here on Yelp (I believe it is photo # 9) of our 2 pizzas. p.p.s. - they have a small outdoor patio with a few tables (some had big umbrellas, some didn't). Super Bowl crowd intimate and cool..... Barkeep Kat's a lil hottie with a regular crowd. The staff are very close and a very, very family feel at dis joint!!!! Newbies are treated well though. I came to eat here for lunch the other day since NYAJ (Across the parking lot) decided not to give me service and might I just say... I'M SO GLAD I CAME IN HERE!!! I really enjoyed the food a lot!!! Working in the food industry I do a lot of restaurant visit and critique their food: quality, taste, texture and restaurant service. Our waitress was friendly, fairly attentive. She was very helpful when doing her menu presentation and she earned great tip for suggesting the food that was delicious. My party and I started with the oven bakes wings, which were delicious, since I'm a fan on onions and they're smothered in onions. We ordered a Margherita pizza with the signature sauce that was recommended by our waitress and she was right! I fell in love! We each ordered a sandwich and they were delicious except mine-- I ordered the cheddar cheese steak. I excepted my cheese steak to be cheesy, hence the name of the sandwich (with cheese melting out and just tasting so cheesy), but NO!. It had very little cheese and almost not enough meat to cover the entire sub roll bread. I won't be ordering this again, but will try something new next time. We have been in to Coal Fire a few times, and we have had consistently good food and great service. The bartending staff are really nice and attentive, and sitting at the tables around the bar is better than getting a sit down booth. As for the pizza, the Ring of Fire is a sure bet. The sauce is a little more european in taste. Only complaint is that it gets busy, and it gets crowded with people waiting. read more

Some of the best pizza the area has to offer. Excellent thin crust touched well by the coal burning ovens. Both the regular sauce and there signature sauce are really tasty. The signature is sweeter if you like a sweeter sauce. Toppings are all excellent especially the mozzarella. I have had two salads there; the Coal Fire and the Grilled Caesar. Excellent! The Caesar is half a head of romaine kissed by the grill with a very good dressing...the slight char on the lettuce is terrific. The Coal Fire is a great salad of chopped greens, brown sugar coated bacon, chopped walnuts, cherry tomatoes, with a citrus vinaigrette...the bacon was still warm!! Highly recommend it. read more

My husband and I went last night for dinner. Every time we've been there before the food has been really good. Was disappointed for sure last night. Overly fried, dry, rubbery chicken parmesan sub. Fries were overly fried and not in a good way. No seasoning on anything. The wings tasted like nothing and had a huge pile of onions on them. Ok enough of the Seuss references because I know you got the point. Pizza snobs may turn their noses at me for liking Pizza Hut and Dominoes sometimes but I think I just enjoy pizza crust, sauce and cheese. I don't discriminate when it comes to pizza. Sure, it may not be how it originated and American pizza may be a joke to others but I love it. With that in mind, I now turn my attention to Coal Fire, located in Kentlands area right next to the Chic Fil A in the Giant shopping center. When you walk in, there's a nice bar area with small amount of tables but looks like a good vibe going on, especially at happy hour on a Thursday. Looks packed, but the crowd looks welcoming. To the left and inside there are booths and tables sprinkled throughout with an outdoor patio with tables for a nice day. The service has always been great whenever I go as well. With 2 young kids, they have enjoyed their time there. The kids even get to watch the workers make the pizza through a side pane window which they love. They get to see them make it, put it into the hot coal oven and then serve it to us. The pizza itself is great, nice charred bubbles of crust on top. You pick between classic, signature (slightly sweet and spicy), and spicy. You can also get their specialty pizzas and my favorite is Ring of Fire, banana peppers for tang, spicy sauce, and Italian sausage. The pizzas itself have a nice chew to it and the sauce is distinct. If you don't like pizza and watching the carbs, they have some salads that my wife really likes. The wings are the only thing I don't like there, a little dry. Since the wings also get heated up in the 900 degree coal fire oven I think it dries out all the juiciness it may once had. The Good: - Service, family friendly atmosphere for parents and kids. The bar area looks like a good happy hour spot. - Pizzas are really charred to perfection. Ring of Fire good and prefer the spicy sauce. Looking for something sweeter, then the signature sauce is also good. - Salads are pretty good too The Bad: - Wings are too dry. Maybe they shouldn't heat it up in the coal fire oven? Grilled Caesar is amazing. Pizza is good. Bar tender (female brunette) on Sunday afternoon needs a real attitude adjustment. Tried to order drinks (half priced on Sunday) and the move to a table because it was crowded in the bar area and she would not allow it. Obnoxious. The signature sauce is perfect, make sure to get extra of that, but be warned that it's a little on the sweet side. But still, perfect. Fantastic place. I love to come and sit in the bar area and enjoy food and drinks. I've come 5 or 6 times in the last month and a half since moving to Kentlands. The pizza is fantastic and I'm a picky eater. We've also tried the pasta and fries and brisket sandwichX all wonderful. They have a great beer and wine collection but also great cocktails including mojitos and Moscow mules. read more

Not a happy patron! We've been here multiple times and have enjoyed ourselves. Tonight was a major disappointed. We have young children so we usually try to hit up restaurants before the usual rush. When we arrived the restaurant was pretty empty. 4 employees were standing at the hostess desk and they showed no interest in our arrival. Once I said there would be 4 of us it took another few seconds for someone to decide to grab some menus and seat us. Once we sat down, we were greeted by our server, who was pleasant and even humored my excited daughters. We ordered right away, since we know what we like! The grilled caesar salad is too die for. Honestly. It's the best salad I've ever had. Who knew grilling lettuce could change a salad into an experience. We ordered our usually pizza - large pepperoni and black olive with the signature sauce. Also delish. The only issue with our food, everything came out at one time. The salad is like a time bomb. You can't let it sit or something delicious turns into something else. By the time we got to our pizza, it was room temperature. Quite a bummer. Once all was said and done, we waited for close to 20 minutes after finishing our meals before our server checked on us. A ridiculous amount of time considering the restaurant was by no means full. We paid and walked out and again were ignored by the staff hanging at the front. The food is awesome, I just wish tonight's service matched. Not sure we will be going back. :( read more

Went with co-workers for lunch and, man, what an experience. All started off well. There were five of us and the restaurant was half-full. The server was nice and pretty quick to take our order. But once we ordered, the problem started. One of my co-workers cannot eat certain types of food. All he asked for was a small pizza with the basic tomato sauce, no cheese and some basil and oregano sprinkled on top. Evidently this must be some kind of 'super secret special pizza sauce'. The waitress told him that she could not bake the pizza with the oregano and basil on top because it would 'mess up the flavor of the sauce.' Huh? So, he asked to speak to the manager who, of course, didn't budge either. And here is the kicker - she told him that while they could not put the oregano on themselves because it would mess up the flavor, they could give him a side of oregano and he could put it on himself if that's what he wanted to do. Say what??? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Needles to say, none of the five of us are ever going back there again. The bad part is that I actually liked the pizza that I got, but the experience just turned me off. I will say that the waitress handled it like a pro, so I'm guessing it's the manager or the owners who thinks their pizza is a work of art rather than something one should eat. 3.5 Stars After branching out past the pizza here, I'm upping my rating to 3.5 stars...My go to food at Coal Fire is actually their sandwiches. The quality fluctuates between 3 and 4 star even when comparing the same sandwiches in different visits. Either way they are always good, just sometimes better than others. Service is always friendly and generally pretty efficient. Finally, try the grilled Caesar's Salad...The warm romaine with the fresh Parmesan cheese is a great combination! read more

We absolutely love this place! The atmosphere is nice and the food is amazing. The salads are quite good, particularly the grilled Caesar. But the stars of the meal are the roasted chicken wings and the pizza. The chicken wings are crunchy and savory and succulent. The char gives them a wonderful flavor as does the rosemary spice rub. We get 8 for the two of us as an appetizer but could easily get double that. The wings are served on top of grilled flatbread with roasted onions. The flatbread is perfect for wrapping up some onions. The pizza is heavenly with excellent sauce and crust. The super hot pizza oven gives it a wonderful char (but not burnt) flavor and texture. The toppings are good quality but not plentiful for the price. The prices are good for the size and quality of the food. And the staff is always friendly and efficient. I really love this place! The pizza is so good and i would especially recommend the spicy sauce. Since covid, I have been delivering more(doodash/grubhub/ubereats etc) and the pizza usually comes cold which is understandable but when I get the chance to eat in again I definitely will! The reason why I do subtract one star is because they normally do not put enough cheese but when i order extra cheese they put 3x the original amount which is just too much cheese. Yesterday evening, a friend and I went here for dinner. We arrived 7:00, and noticed it was crowded. The bar was filled with loud people, and there was a family of 5 sitting down, waiting for their table. My friend and I were approached by a hostess who looked very tired, and barely smiled. She asked for a name, and told us to take a seat, as the wait would be 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the family that was sitting was moved to their table. Since my friend and I were seated next to the door, and it was chilly every time someone opened it, we moved closer to the Hosting station. After 5 more minutes, our hostess told us our table was ready, and apologized for the long wait. When seated, our waitress greeted us with a friendly smile, and gave us time to figure out what we wanted to order. I thought the pizzas were a bit overpriced. Nonetheless, I decided to order a 12" Signature Pizza with spinach and mushrooms, and Hand Cut Fries. My friend ordered a 12" Spicy Pizza with spinach and Italian sausage. Each cost $13.95 in total ($10.95 12" Pizza + 2 toppings ($1.50 each) The wait was not very long. After 8-10 minutes, we received the Hand-Cut Fries. I was surprised by the quantity of fries. I was honestly expecting a handful, however the amount they served was very large. It cost $3.95, but could be shared among 2 or 3 people. The only problem I had with the fries was that it was very crunchy, and it was not very warm when it came out. The pizza came out very shortly, and we were delighted. They had a satisfying amount of toppings on both pizzas, not too little and not too much. The sauce was a bit strange, as it reminded much me of the sauce on &Pizza's Moonstruck pizza. It was a bit sweet. Though on the menu, it states that it would be "slightly sweet with a hint of spice," all I tasted was sweetness. My friend stated that his spicy pizza was a bit too spicy for him. But overall, the pizzas tasted alright. read more

It is so nice to have a dine in pizza place close by. The food is great, the "Ring of Fire" pizza is a favorite of ours. The service has been very cheerful and quick. It's a nice change of pace to see a place like this in the wasteland that is the Kentlands. Would rate a 5, but the place fills up quick and gets loud fast. read more

Drove her from Silver Spring because their website advertises 1/2 price drinks on Sunday. Arrived and was told that the 1/2 price drink deal was suspended. Odd because we confirmed with the hostess that you had to sit in the bar area to get the deal but our waitress at the bar told us that they no longer offer it. She went to check and came back to say they do offer it but it's currently suspended. Whatever that means. Decided to stay. Mojito was trash. Shrimp on a shingle tasted fine but was not hot, nor was the margarita pizza. Huge disappointment. If you still have a special published you should honor it. It's just the right thing to do. Probably won't support any Coal Fire location after this experience. read more

A decent choice if you're in Kent/Lakelands or Gburg and want a decent pizza/wings without going too far (at a decent price, to boot). We tried out the 12" pie with the signature sauce and two toppings - came out to $14, not bad. The pie was in the 3.5 range for me, and I'm not always a fan of thin, crispy crust pizzas. I think I'd try the "classic" sauce next time though, I think the sweetness in the signature sauce yanks the pizza too far away from the savory end of the spectrum, but that's just me. We split an order of wings and fries as well. The fries were shoestring style, which again, I'm not usually a fan of, but these were pretty good, and a lot were provided for $4. As for the wings, CF does their wings up pretty different: they're baked in a ceramic dish along with onions and flatbread with a light herb/oil brushing. I liked them, but fans of standard buffalo wings will be disappointed. Side note, their ranch dressing is really excellent - I advise asking for some with your wings and/or fries just to try it. Otherwise, service was pretty good, considering how busy the joint is (and always seems to be). There's a small outside seating area in addition to the main dining room (which the CF oven opens up into) and an fairly large adjoining bar area. A place for intimate conversation CF is not, as it gets pretty loud when filled up, but that said dining in is a pretty decent, if not pleasant, experience. read more

Hey - surprisingly delicious for a strip-mall pizza place. Nicer ambiance inside (& outside seating) than you'd think from the outside. Pizza was crisp and not overloaded with toppings. Wine list was decent. Service was great. My new go-to place for pizza. Oooh, it's worth noting that they do NOT have hot drinks (i.e. coffee,...) or dessert. Odd. read more
