It was busy when we arrived and we had to wait for a table which is a challenge due to the restaurant's sub optimal layout. The staff kept having the pass through a narrow area in the waiting area to get over to the bar section with food and kitchenware/glasses. The bar was quite busy and remained so even after we left. After a short wait we were seated and ordered. The service was a bit spotty but not because of an inattentive server just because for some reason they sat about 3 or 4 of her tables at the same time. Every time we needed service there seemed to be a wait because she was at another table. Speaks more to the management of the place than the quality of the service. We had a couple pizzas and both were very good. I had the signature sauce and would recommend that. It was a good balance of sweetness and heat in the flavor profile that sets this place apart from other pizza places. Overall a very good experience and I would recommend stopping by. read more

I really don't care how long the order is going to take, but there should be an expectation of timely service. If you're a pizza aficionado, let met give you a quick word. This restaurant does not do the New York fold. It does not do the Chicago deep dish. It cooks pizza at extremely high temperatures in a brick oven, which means the pizza comes out charred. If you don't like your pizzas charred, don't come here. If this doesn't bother you, by all means, come! The pizza is solid. it's a thin crust. We were celebrating my dad's birthday here because this is his favorite place to get pizza. Unlike other places, or even unlike frozen pizza from the grocery store, Coal Fire does not overload its pizzas with cheese -- unless you ask for it. I believe they put on the right amount of cheese and allow the crust and the pizza sauce a chance to shine through. This pizza, in short, is a pleasure to eat. (My dad and I shared the classic cheese pizza.) Not all in our party are pizza aficionados. That's OK because Coal Fire has other dishes, too. My spouse got the garlic shrimp pasta -- emphasis on the garlic. I would even say the garlic was a little much and overpowered the shrimp, but combined with the pasta, it was not unpleasant to eat. My stepmother, a vegetarian, got the eggplant parmesan. While it tasted good, I think the eggplant gets lost in the all the breading. We shared an appetizer of fries. These fries are shoestring and crispy with the skins still on -- a nice touch. Finally, my stepbrother got a smaller pizza for himself, a classic pepperoni and jalapeños. I stayed away from that one because, unfortunately, I can't take spicy food. I should add that I had field greens salad. This is similar to Greek (but without olives -- Coal Fire also has a Greek salad if you like that). Field greens does have feta cheese, and thankfully, no romaine lettuce given the scare going on with that particular food (which I normally love). The salad had a dressing that was mixed in just right, reminded me of a raspberry vinaigrette. A note about the service. Our server was friendly, but he didn't do the best job of keeping my drink filled. I am not sure if it's because of how busy he was or the staffing level, but I had to ask twice for a refill. Went with my daughter fir happy hour to catch up . Food was AWESOME ! We loved the lasagna pizza and coal fire salad ! Could only sit in the bar for happy hour pricing which was a little loud and crowded but great atmosphere . The server was attentive but didn't bother us as we were catching up ! They have a normal happy hour and late night happy hour in the bar, along with a daily special during the week available all day even in the non bar seating. We decided on Coal Fire once the pizza craving was established. I've also been seeing new Coal Fires popping up more frequently, so decided it was time. On a Saturday night, the restaurant was busy (always a good sign) and there was about a 10 minute wait for us to be seated in a large booth. We ordered the regular oven- baked wings per the server's recommendation. I should've seen the red flag raised at "oven-baked" because this was not really that good to me. There wasn't much flavor in these wings. They also came smothered in some nicely sauteed onions that were a pleasant touch. I would not order this again, but do wonder how the bbq wings are here. For our meal we chose to make our own 16 inch pizza. We added the signature sauce, pepperoni, prosciutto and spinach. We were kind of in love with this pizza. I absolutely loved the sweetness of the sauce and the nice crisp to the pizza dough. They also had a generous amount of prosciutto which was greatly appreciated. Between the two of us, we ate the ENTIRE pizza. For what it was, I do believe the pizza cost a bit much. I think it was over $20 just for the pizza? Thats a lot. I have been going to Coal fire for five months. I have tried most of the menu and have never been disappointed. My favorites are their pizza with the signature sauce, their ribeye sub and their fresh mozzarella! The reason I started coming in the first place was because of a fantastic bartender I have had the pleasure to witness for many years!! I found out Courtney was working there. ( Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Evenings) When I arrived she was being her wonderful self. She makes delicious adult beverages, she is very engaging with all her customers- new or regulars - she treats everyone with great respect. She creates an environment that is appreciated. She appreciates you for allowing her to serve you. If you come in just a few times, she will recognize you and remember your drink order and that's a special trait of hers. Courtney makes a visit to the Coal fire bar a memorable experience. Her infectious personality has customers becoming friends with people who didn't even know each other before entering her bar!! I have to wave my arms to grab someone's attention from the back.. At this point, the food is 15 minutes past due for a 25 minute order. It's now 9:45, and I show up excited for my order and it turns out the staff had not even entered it into their system properly, so now I have to wait until after close to receive an order I placed over an hour ago. Staff exudes privilege. Staff more concerned with their conversations than customer service. Either they were not trained, or have no understanding of task prioritization, and I pray they'll grow from this. Disappointed. Great little spot in the kentlands when I want a quick and hearty sandwich or pizza. The happy hour deal is fantastic compared to other competitors in the area. It starts between 3pm-6pm during the weekday with half off 12 inch pizzas and $1 off domestic beers, rail mix drinks and other drink specials. If I can't make it during the week than i try to make it on the weekends when the deal happens again from 9pm til close. I always get their signature sauce pizza with mushrooms and pepperoni. Their signature sauce is quite delightful with a balance of sweet and spice that makes the pizza great. If you love thin crust pizzas than you'll love coal fire pizzas and won't feel guilty eating the whole thing. I have a crazy schedule and I love to swing by for a sandwich to take with me on a go. Their holiday turkey sandwich is like having thanksgiving whenever I want! The turkey and stuffing in the sandwich is never dry and you can never go wrong with their cranberry sauce and roll that holds it all together. But if you're over thanksgiving food than you should definitely try their delicious and succulent ribeye sandwich that's thinly slice with grilled onions and provolone cheese. And if you're looking for something to do for Sunday funday than this is a great place to spend your day. I'd give it a high 4.75 We went to Coalfire for an early dinner around 5:30 pm, yesterday night. The menu is not super extensive, but that works in it's favor I think. It allows them to focus on quality over quantity. We got a 12inch pizza with the Spicy sauce (it tastes sweet for a couple seconds and then the heat kicks in.. it's a perfect balance of heat) with ground beef, basil and olives. All their pizzas are thin crusts and for the 12inch each topping is $1.50 each. My brother got the Coalby's homemade meatball hero sandwich, for $7.95, which came with fries for a buck more. And we all shared the Sweet & Hot Pepper Calamari for $8.95 The food was excellent. The thin crust pizza was perfect. The meatballs on my brother's sandwich were soft and juicy and well made. The calamari, which is served in a sweet lemon peppery sauce, was some of the best I've ever had. I'd recommend coming back and it's not terribly expensive given the portions and quality of the food. Coal Fire quickly became my favorite pizza establishment upon my first visit several years ago. My top two favorite items are the Coal Fire salad and the margherita pizza with signature sauce instead of classic sauce and pepperoni added. There is fresh mozarella cheese baked onto the margherita pizza along with fresh basil - the addition of pepperoni and signature sauce puts it over the top. The signature sauce has a hint of sweetness that I love so much that I have never tried the classic sauce. The Coal Fire salad has chopped brown sugar coated bacon, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes sliced in half all tossed in a honey mustard vinaigrette and is served with a toasted slice of bread. I have also ordered the Coal Fire wings a few times. The wings are baked instead of fried and they are covered in roasted onions and served with baked dough. I keep saying that on my next visit I will branch out to try some different menu items but the pizza keeps calling my name each time I walk in. read more

Disappointing overall. Came in on a slow Monday night. (My second time here.) Service & pizza were borderline decent. There are hardly any options and they aren't very accommodating. Bartending manager isn't interested in altering any drinks and if you want a half/half pizza the cheese and sauce have to be the same. They were also out of the 9" personal pizzas and the drink menu wasn't updated when we came. There were a couple managers around, but they were just hanging out on their phones. The strangest thing that happened is that we asked for extra cheese and it had the exact amount of cheese as a regular pizza. The waitress waited 10+ minutes to check back on us and we couldn't ask about the cheese until then. She (Sean - not sure if I spelled her name correctly) said, "Yeah, we just go really light on our cheese." If that's the case, then I'm not really sure what the point of ordering extra cheese is. It took awhile for her to come back so we couldn't really do anything about being unsatisfied with it. The toppings aren't very generous for what you pay. ($0.75 for just half the pizza and $1.50 for the whole) They also have no desserts and their only non-alcoholic drinks are Pepsi products and Minute Maid lemonade. (Pepsi, Seirra Mist, Root Beer...) It's just lacking overall, but it's not terrible. If you're hungry and you don't have too discerning of an eye, you'll probably enjoy it. read more

I came twice during lunch with a rather large party and surprisingly on both occasions we were seated fairly quickly. I ordered the Ring of Fire with banana peppers and sausage and I've also tried the custom pizza with signature sauce and sausages. The ring of fire sauce definitely has a kick to it which can get overwhelming at times. The signature sauce and by far my favorite sauce is sweeter than most but is full bodied and quite tasty. The pizza can become quite pricy depending on the amount of toppings you choose to add. Service was great and definitely on top of things. Since I've been craving artisan-style pizza every other night, we gave Coal Fire a go, and we are so glad we did. Although we have a different place that we like for pizza to-go, this is probably going to be our sit-down pizza place. We actually tried to get into Coal Fire a while back, but it was so busy, and we were starving, we ended up somewhere else. We came either ridiculously early or really late, I can't really remember, but this time we didn't have to wait. The dining area is actually pretty small, and it seems like 50% of the place is taken up by the bar area, which is on the other side of the kitchen. The bar area is the section that gets pretty rowdy. Seems like mainly middle-aged locals. We had the "onion rings" to start, and they were good, but I think this was mainly because we were starving---nothing makes food taste as good as hunger. The "rings" were shoestring style, and were pretty greasy. I prefer a good, crunchy ring. I somehow talked Scott into getting the Margherita pizza with the Signature sauce, he's usually a meat kind of guy. The sauce completely made this pizza, it is freakin' delicious! I wouldn't order the Margherita again, partly because I'm sure Scott won't let me, but also because I like fresh basil on top. Well, this was fresh (as in not dried), but it had been cut long before my pizza was made--the edges of the basil leaves were all brown, and the basil was spotty....looked kind of old actually. All that aside, the sauce is great, and I'm looking forward to trying other pizzas at Coalfire. 2/20/2011 Update: The grilled Caesar salad is AWESOME. We told our waiter we were in a hurry and he really went out of his way to help expedite our pizzas. -The toppings were generous. At over $1 per topping, I'm glad that was the case! -The crust was chewy, and fairly thin. -The restaurant was clean. Cons: -I ordered the Spicy sauce and a) it barely had heat and b) was super sweet. I ordered from Coal Fire through Grubhub. The food arrived missing an entree. I called the restaurant and explained the problem to the person that picked up the phone. I was placed on hold while they went to speak with someone about the issue. It seems the restaurant manager didn't seem concerned enough to take my call. The staff member who went to check on the missing item returned to the phone, and explained that Coal Fire and Grubhub didn't actually have a partnership, and that Grubhub just placed their menu on the Grubhub website, and that the driver calls in the order on behalf of the customer. I was told that the entree order was never placed - although it was paid for. No restitution was offered - I was told that I should contact Grubhub to see what they could do. I was able to go to the Grubhub website and request a refund for the missing item online. The food that did arrive wasn't very good. The wings were cold and tasted old. The fries that came with the food that did arrive were burned. I put a frozen pizza in the oven. read more

The staff is not educated on ingredients, and every time I've been in the past couple of years and ask about vegan options, I've been told the pizza is vegan as long as we get vegan cheese. Today we went, with visiting extended family, sat down (with 4 kids) and ordered, and were told the pizza crust contains egg. This was the first time a server actually knew enough about the food to inform us. We had ordered drinks by this time so we ended up paying for them and going elsewhere, but not before talking to manager who seemed like he could care less. Not safe for Celiac. Gluten free items cross contaminated. The management states that gluten free pizzas are made in the back with GF sauce and cheese. However, we saw that they use the same sauce and ladle as the regular pizzas. This means that the entire container of sauce is contaminated after the first regular pizza. We tested with the Nima Sensor which confirmed gluten in the sauce. We spoke with the manager, Sarah, who had attitude after we shared ther test results. It's obvious they lack training for cross contamination. It doesn't matter if the cook preparing GF wears gloves if they are accessing cross contaminated ingredients.
