Total disappointment for lunch. Outside tented picnic tables are all that is available for seating. Food is served as takeout with plastic flimsy utensils and paper plates. Really bummed as we heard this establishment was quality but food was marginal at best. Chicken Caprese salad with unripe hothouse tomatoes and stringy chicken strips. Fried green tomato sandwich was okay, but fried tomatoes were not crispy at all. Wait staff was good but they don't have much to work with. It is a shame but I think COVID accommodations have wrecked the experience and food here. .... And the flies were very abundant and totally detracted from the mediocre experience. read more

A place to eat and get gas.... Wait, that can't be right. We stopped here twice this trip. Once for lunch, once for dinner. Both times were terrific. I'd count this place among the gems we found while in Duck. Decor Despite being attached to a gas station this place is really charming. There is a nice patio area, cozy bar and ample booths for dining. Don't feel like staying? It seems that there is some sort of a drive thru (I'm not kidding). You can also get low country boil pots to go as well. It's a mish-mash of stuff, but remarkably it works. Food There are a number of Carolina standards on the menu here. In my two visits I had the Carolina style pulled pork sandwich and their signature dish, pan seared scallops. If Carolina style, vinegar based BBQ is an acquired taste, then I acquired the hell out of it! Juicy, flavorful pork with their creamy slaw made my mouth sing. Pair that with hand cut fries and you have made me an incredibly happy guy. The scallops were to die for! Perfectly cooked, plump, sweet little nuggets of ocean goodness. They were paired with some seasonal veggies, but honestly I don't really recall what. The scallops were that good that I suffer from amnesia on what else I ate. Service We spoke with the chef/owner of Cravings about our son's food allergies. He was very helpful in making sure our little dude did no go hungry. Also, both servers we had were super friendly. If I have one gripe its that we did not have our drinks refilled without an ask. But then again, we are eating in a place attached to a gas station... Can't gripe to loudly. We have been coming to Duck for years and have always enjoyed our stay and dining experiences. We finally decided to try Cravings after the national exposure and good reviews. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. I suspect our experience would have been slightly better if we had been able to get a table inside. However it was a cool, breezy evening and seemed nice for dining outside so we accepted the outside table. To start, they could at least put up a fence so you are not staring at gas pumps the entire meal. Plus an 18 wheeler arrived to make a delivery just as we sat down and it idled through our entire stay. We were assaulted by flies the entire time and therefore rushed through our meal to get it over with and away from the gas smell, the idling truck and the flies. The food was fine but certainly not as good as we expected based on the reviews and the prices. The service was the only great thing. Our server was pleasant, attentive and got everything right. You are better off at just about any of the alternative restaurants in Duck. read more

Gas station? Lol. Walk inside and you'll quickly realize this place is legit. Fun atmosphere, yet small. I had the crab cake sandwich and it was good. Lots of flavor, especially in the remoulade sauce. I'd love to try their take-out seafood boils. Oysters, clams, crab, lobster, etc. Sounds delicious. They even have a drive through. One negative, we weren't able to order from the dinner menu even though it was almost 4pm. They only serve lunch during lunch hours, etc... Unfortunate because I wanted to try their scallops. Good service. Good vibe. Wouldn't necessarily make a trip just to go there but it's worth your time if you're in the area. read more

Very good food but do not eat outside here after 7pm. The outside seating area is not screened in, so many flying bugs ended up in our food and drinks. In addition, there were cockroaches seen crawling in and out the bricks in this same area. Bug control is obviously an issue here at night. read more

Went back to this place post COVID. Waited an hour for a table which was not bad but over an hour to get served our meal. Served 30.00 per meal dinners in cardboard boxes, Plastic utensils and paper plates. Spent over 150.00 for family of 4 and felt like I was eating at an overpriced outdoor picnic. Chicken was over cooked and dry. Best part of the meal was the fries. There are 100 better places to eat - did I mention the flies... skip it - you won't miss anything. We have been to Duck twice and both times stopped here. The first as a couple and the second with our daughter. Both times, the food and service did not disappoint. The seafood boil was awesome and so were the cocktails. We loved our waitress - very cool and efficient. The staff was very friendly as we picked it up. I got the fish tacos which were delicious. They had good flavor and were a little spicy. I shared one with my husband who got the hot roast beef and cheddar. That was also good. We also had the steamed shrimp (spicy) which weren't very spicy, but were large sized and had good flavor. We were so excited to try this restaurant after seeing it on the food network. Unfortunately, the service was awful and the food wasn't anything great. It seemed like they thought they had made it because they were on tv and forgot about good customer service. The server made us feel rushed from the moment we sat down. My husband ordered surf and turf. Everyone else ordered fish and chips. The fish and chips came out 15 minutes before my husband's food. When his food finally showed up, the steak was overdone. He had to send it back 3 times... He finally gave up. The restaurant did not remove it from our bill. Instead they offered us one piece of the smallest piece of chocolate cake I've ever seen. It was very insulting. Then they proceed to charge a mandatory 18% gratuity on the entire bill. Save your money and go to the Paper Canoe Restaurant. Wow, this place lives up to the hype! First time for lunch, a bit crowded and warm ( outside seating only). Quickly seated under tent, where it was immediately nicer. Service fast and efficient. Our party had the crab sandwich, which was chock full of crab, pickle. Brined chicken sandwich, nicely brined and fried, and the cheeseburger, delicious but a smootch too salty( just a smootch). Costal Cravings was definitely one of the better restaurants I've been to in OBX. Service was great, and surprisingly fast for a Friday night. Our server, Chris, was very friendly and professional and seemed to be knowledgable. The food was good, not necessarily life changing, but definitely good, classic seafood and was certainly fresh and prepared well. I liked that they had several non-seafood options as well for those who aren't too fond of it. One of the best parts was they took my number down when we walked in so I could get a text notification when our table was ready, that way we didn't have to sit in the crowded waiting area, we could wait outside or in the car. The only small complaint I have is the table we were seated at. I've never seen such an odd design. It was a one-sided booth, so all 3 of us had to squeeze in because instead of another bench, there was just a wall and window (as shown in the photo below). Overall I would definitely go back, perhaps just not when it's so busy. read more

Hot damn!!!! Out at the outer banks during the off season, high today 51degrees and going to see the wild horses. Left to find something to eat haven't found anything! Stopped to get some gas in duck and low and behold there is a nice hole in the wall dive, that is open for breakfast. Stopped in after filling up and filled up ourselves. This is a story about cravings. I walked into the establishment and was seated in a timely fashion. When we were seated, our drink orders were also taken within a reasonable time frame. The experience was all down hill from here. One star for timely seating and one star for timely drinks. When the drinks were dropped off we were not asked for appetizers (which I saw coming). Several minutes went by in the business which was no where near busy. When our waitress returned she took all of our orders and repeated herself multiple times that she would not make the fish tacos to my liking because of complaints. This method seems extremely troubling for the business because it is basically saying "we will not make food to your liking". After being talked out of the fish tacos that I've traveled several hours for, the waitress also completely ruined the timing for when we got our appetizers and our main entrees because she took all of the food orders at once. *Time elapses* we get our appetizers and the calamari was mediocre at best, served with chipotle mayo just like everything else on the menu (you'll see what I mean if you go to this place which I never will again). My burger was about 2 stars as well and she forgot my side of ranch which I had to wait for. On a positive note, my friend still hadn't gotten her food so I was able to sit and converse about the remainder of our plans for the day while we waited for her to return. I met up with a college friend for lunch while vacationing with my family. I had the crab cake sandwich with "seasoned" fries, it was nothing special. The crab cake sandwich was mushy, and I grew up from Maryland/virginia, and had phenomenal types of seafood. The seasoning of the sandwich was okay, but crab cake tasted processed, not freshly made, hence the mushiness. Seasoned fries were just regular straight cut fries, with old bay seasoning. We stopped in for just apps. Outside seating is next to the gas station with no view of ocean or the soundside. We ordered the fried scallops, the duck wontons and the mussels. The scallops were coated lightly and fried nicely as well as large and tender. The wonton shells were crisp and not greasy but the filling was lacking in flavor. The wontons came in a sauce that had some andouille sausage but was stone cold. Many of the mussels still had the beards on them and needed more cleaning as well as the sauce lacked flavor. read more

Coastal Cravings has great food, and can be a lot of fun if you go into it with the right mindset. 1) It's attached to a gas station. Bear that in mind when it comes to ambiance. If you sit outside, like we did, you're basically in a parking lot. If you're in a relaxed mood, enjoy some people-watching and live music, you'll be golden. An extra bonus for me was a local cat who wandered onto the patio looking for seafoody handouts--which she got, because I am a sucker. But if a meandering feline turns you off, this isn't the place for you. The bathroom for the restaurant is IN the gas station and has all the usual "charm" of a gas station bathroom, and finding parking in the lot can be a little challenging when they're busy. 2) Don't be in a hurry. I mean, REALLY don't be in a hurry. Odds are, especially in high season, you'll be waiting for a table. Then, once you are seated, don't expect the dinner to be a fast-paced event. You might have to remind your server to bring you things: bread, extra plates to share an appetizer, some more water, etc. Would I prefer this were not the case? Yes, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. 3) The food makes up for any of those previous imperfections. The mini-crab cake appetizer was insanely good. There's zero breadcrumb filler in the cakes themselves, just crab and some mayo/mustard and seasonings. Then they roll them in a coating of breadcrumbs and fry them, almost more like a fritter. I could have eaten like 95 of them. For entrees my husband had an enormous quantity of snow crab and I had the scallops with lobster sauce, both of which were excellent. My scallops were cooked perfectly, the lobster sauce was rich and flavorful, and the rice and veggies that accompanied it were cooked perfectly. In summation, if you're looking for a fine dining atmosphere, this may not be your jam. There are plenty of those types of places in Duck and surrounding environs. But if you want to just relax and enjoy really good food at a relaxed pace in a quirky setting, Coastal Cravings is the way to go. read more

I was part of a party of nine that came for breakfast during the week of thanksgiving. Even though we had a large party, they sat us down and took care of us quickly. The food was absolutely amazing. The crab cake sunrise was delicious and we all split a crème brûlée muffin which was a tasty treat. My two picky children loved the biscuits. In addition to great service and food, the restaurant was immaculate clean. I always dread taking my kids to public bathrooms, but I had no worries here. Tried based on yelp review. So glad we did. It's Wednesday night so there's live music on the patio. Restaurant is so unassuming next to a gas station. Service was fantastic. We sat outside at 9pm so I'm sure you can smell fumes if earlier. Had the key lime martini which was yummy. Shared a broiled platter which is a specialty at $28 w extra grilled veggies. Yummy! We stopped in for breakfast...this is our first time staying in Duck and we're not very familiar with the breakfast offerings in this part of OBX. We drove by it twice--yep, it's in the back of the gas station. Easy to miss, but I hope you don't! We got our food pretty quickly--we got there during a lull. My boyfriend got a breakfast sandwich and I got the ultimate breakfast. He enjoyed his sandwich--ham, pulled pork, egg, and bacon--and I liked mine as well...the boyfriend helped me finish my sausage and home fries. I ate my eggs and French toast. Lots of food for $5--the ultimate is the Sunday special. They apparently have a drive-thru as well...that might come in handy in the future. :) read more

Decent place for a quick lunch, I've only had the crabcake sandwich so this review is pretty much just for that. The place is attached to a gas station, which isn't a big deal unless you need to use the restroom (which means you'll be using a gas station restroom). Otherwise the place is nice, with a decent amount of both indoor and outdoor seating as well as seating at the bar. Service was friendly, bar was well stocked. The crabcake sandwich was mediocre, its a deep-fried ball of crab that contains way too much mayo. The interior of the crabcake is gooey and not many large chunks of crab to be seen. But the overall flavor was pretty good. Probably one of the better lunch options around, particularly in this area. Would return again, but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more
