The only reason this place gets 3 stars was simply because of all the flies inside. I understand that the door is constantly opening but an air curtain would certainly help here. Now onto the food and atmosphere and service. We arrived in town and were waiting for our house to be ready so we stopped here. Hostess was SUPER NICE! We wanted to sit inside so there was a wait, but no worries they have a bar out behind the restaurant and WOW, great drinks and great beers on tap. And excellent service too! Very cute place though expect a wait during the summer. There are only like 10 or so tables. The food was pretty good but we only ordered appetizers so can't speak for the entrees which all looked great as they passed our table. I personally got the crab dip and caprese salad. The caprese was very good. The crab dip could use some work. Tasted like it was 90% cream cheese. Needed some flavor and some more crab. Can't beat $6 flights of beer though. What a great find! We've been coming to OBX for several years and Coastal Cravings is a new find for us, I feel like we've been missing out. Excellent food, fun environment, and stellar customer service. We tried a few menu items during our first visit: - snow crabs - crab cake app - chicken tenders (kids) - panko crushed jumbo shrimp - hush puppies Everything was incredible! The crabs were streamed to perfection, the chicken tenders tasted like my aunt's true homemade skillet fried chicken (kind of a big deal), and the shrimp were fresh and had just the right amount of panko crumbs! This place was awesome. Even though it was attached to the side of a gas station. We walked in and a host greeted us and seated us immediately. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer, and it was some of the best calamari I ever had! A person I was with got the seared scallops which were listed as "Guy's Favorite" on the menu since Guy Fieri went there for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The person I was with that got them said they were really good, but there was just too much sauce under them for his taste. I got crab fettuccine alfredo and it was absolutely heavenly!!! I strongly recommend it!!! This place is perfect to go to with a large group because there is something on the menu for everyone, including the kids! Pretty good kid's menu too. They have the standard pasta and chicken tenders, but they also have really good seafood on there too! I totally recommend this place to everyone! read more

Had dinner here last night and to be honest it was entirely underwhelming. We ate at the bar and were treated to a slightly snotty, arrogant server. I began with a beer and found the taps contained 8 beers all of which were IPA's, Pale Ales and brown ales. In other words 8 versions of similar beers with no option for a lager or pilsner which is what I was craving at the moment. I ordered a mahi mahi special that allegedly featured "lump crab meat" in the sauce....nothing resembling lump crab meat ever made it to MY plate. The dish was served over a nice smelling jazmine rice that had multiple gluey clumps in it. Inexcusable in a restaurant. The accompanying vegetable side was nicely cooked zucchini and red peppers with no discernible garlic or herbs of any kind, making it stunningly bland. My fish came dry and clearly over cooked leaving it a remarkably bland experience as well. Poorly cooked fish in a coastal restaurant is also inexcusable. My meal gets a 1 star. My dinner companion had slightly better luck. She ordered a 'wedge salad' which turned out to be a half a head of lettuce with a passable blu cheese dressing and pieces of real bacon. This was the star of the night. Her main course was 5 perfectly cooked scallops over a bed of frozen french fries that were slightly undercooked. We gave her meal a tentative 3 just to be sure we were being fair. Together we give the experience a 2, which I'm tempted to downgrade given that the meal ended up being $69. read more

Went here to grab steamer pots for a home cooked meal. The place is behind a gas station so it is kinda of odd. However, they have picnic tables set-up inside. The steamer pots were kind of expensive but its Duck & they raise the price by about 15-20% on everything compared to other places in OBX. We got steamer pots to feed 6 people - we should have gotten pots to feed 4 people because the amount of food that you got in the steamer pots was quite a bit especially with appetizers to eat while the steamers cooked. There was a lot of seafood but also a lot of potatoes. I would definitely go back there to get the steamer pots again! read more

Overall, I was not impressed. However , I don't like most seafood which is admittedly not ideal at a restaurant that serves mostly seafood. The appetizers we got (calamari , hush puppies , and some kind of French fry BBQ skins) were average at very best. I got the tropical chicken breast as an entree with French fries and mixed vegetables. The fries were pretty undercooked and the chicken was nothing special. The others I was with overall enjoyed their seafood so my review was bumped up to 3 stars. Also, I didn't taste any alcohol in my drinks and the flies from outside made their way in to our table. I'd give the overall experience 2 stars but seafood eaters suggested 3 so I think that's more fair. read more

This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at any "restaurant." Possibly the rudest hostest/waitress ever and definitely the most unprofessional, insulting owner I've ever met. Our party was skipped by the hostess twice, we then inquired about the situation and she runs to get the owner who comes out, makes an absolute scene calling us all crazy and literally shooing us out the door! UNBELIEVABLE!! This was all within 10 mins of waking in the door. Very disappointing, an absolute lack of communication with no attempt to fix the situation = loss of customers. Fantastic place for breakfast! Very unassuming being alongside a BP gas station. We had the crab cake breakfast sandwich, the brie L T, and the sausage wrap. My rating would be 5 stars if I was going off my first visit 4 years ago. Then, it was a hole-in-a-wall joint with casual seating (I think you ordered at the counter and then they called your name to come get your food). The prices were really reasonable and the food was AMAZING. I kept returning for the crabcake bites or crabcake sandwich, and the drive thru made my repeat visits convenient. It was attached to a gas station (still is), and felt like an undiscovered gem. My family and I were in Duck this week and after a couple of pricey meals out, plus a long day of fishing, we were looking for somewhere quick and cheap to eat. I recommended Coastal Cravings. We arrived and I was shocked at the changes. Yep, it's still attached to a gas station (our server told us the space actually used to be a Burger King), and yep, they still have those amazing crabcake bites and sandwich at a similar price to what I remember paying a few years ago. The service was great, so no complaints there. But everything else is different, and it wasn't necessarily a good thing for me. One, the space has been totally renovated. It is beautiful, especially the shell covered bar. There is a pretty outdoor area with twinkle lights and live music. All that was great, although I felt a little under-dressed (I thought I was going to my hole-in-the-wall joint with plastic tablecloths, ha). No more counter service or drive thru (the window still operates for take out orders, though); it's full service with a hostess. It's also BUSY, which is great for the owners but again, not what I was expecting. We would've had a 45 minute wait for our party of 4 had we not spotted some seats at the bar, which is first-come-first-serve and no one else waiting was interested. Eating at the bar was perfectly okay with us since we didn't want to wait and were looking for a more casual scene anyway. None of these things were negative, just a surprise, but I recognize the owners' right to change things up, and I should've checked out some info online before we went. My complaints start with the feeling that it's way overpriced. The lunch menu looked like what their former all-day menu was, but you can't order off it for dinner, other than the crabcake sandwich. Luckily the bites (what I was craving, no pun intended) are on their appetizer menu. Our server (who was wonderful - friendly with good recommendations [she pointed us in the direction of the hushpuppies for a second app, which were delicious and fairly reasonable]), said that they didn't allow lunch menu orders at dinner because of the small kitchen space...not really buying that since there's a lot of overlap but changes in portions and sides. Anyway, we struggled to find any entrées under $20, and all their specials were over $30. The beers we ordered were way overpriced, and their draft selection was out of order. The prices are such a drastic change from what I was expecting, but I probably would've rolled with it a little better (like I said, my bad for not doing some research to see that they had changed that much), but the food was not great. The exceptions are the crabcake bites and hushpuppies (both items from their "old menu"). Their crabcakes are almost all tasty crab, and fried perfectly. The hushpuppies are huge and full of flavor. Besides the two apps, I got the fish and chips, one of the cheaper things. The fish lacked flavor, and well, fish...very, very thin filets with more breading than anything. Another person in our party had the chicken fettuccine alfredo, and I tasted it...bland and watered down, although I did appreciate the addition of veggies in comparison to a lot of chicken fettuccine at other places. The other two folks in my party had fish 'n chips and fried shrimp and chips. I haven't asked what they thought of the shrimp, so can't speak for that. The chips (fries) were kind of limp and suspiciously like Burger King fries (I'm not saying they actually are, but they certainly weren't better than fast food fries). It was also HOT inside. Admittedly, the outside temperature was scorching that day...but at least there was a breeze outside. I don't know if the A/C was on the fritz, but seeing as they've switched over to a more formal setting than their previous digs, and observing how most other diners were dressed, I wasn't expecting to be sweating through my clothes. [Side note, I noticed on their wall that they've been featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." I'm assuming this was pre-remodel because it is none of these things now. In general, I've noticed that it seems as if once Guy Ferriri takes his overly highlighted-and-spiked hair into a place, it goes downhill.] In short, if you've visited a few years ago (not sure when they redid everything), you'll be surprised, maybe in a bad way. Next time, I'll stick with appetizers or go for lunch. read more

Is there less than a star rating? Absolute worst seafood I've ever had hands down. This was absolutely disgusting. I took my family and my brothers family here based on all of the reviews in Yelp for my sons to have their first seafood experience at what I thought would be one of the best places possible. The place was gross from end to end. Spiders crawling above our heads on the tent. Ordered the Rockefeller oysters and they were terrible. Tasted like seaweed straight from the ocean. We had mahi mahi bites that weren't too bad because they tasted like chicken breading. Finally the main course arrived.. we had the shrimp and grits. The grits were like gravelly soup. Horrible. We also had the broiled seafood platter and a pound of snow crab. I've never had crab this bad before. It was like they had to try to be this bad. The crab legs wouldn't even crack open. They were soft and pillowy. The meat inside was stringy and sinewy. Like rubber doused in fish water. The scallops could be slathered in butter and were edible but not tasty. We left the rest of the platter because it was so bad. I will never eat here again and I'd strongly discourage other people from eating at this establishment except maybe I'll have less than a three hour wait for food at a real restaurant if everyone keeps going here. read more

Enjoyed a great dinner at Coastal Cravings with family. They have a nice little local craft beer selection on tap along with an also good wine menu. We shared several of the appetizers including the hush puppies, oysters, mussels, and fried clam strips. All were excellent and a good value for the area. The service was friendly and efficient. Found this spot on yelp and was surprised to see that it was connected to a gas station, but we decided to give it a try anyway. I had a crab cake sandwich (featured on Diners, Drive ins and Dives as our server informed us) while my husband ordered fish tacos and we split an order of hush puppies. The crab cake sandwich was fantastic...lots of crab, and the hush puppies were extremely hot and fresh. The fish tacos were also quite good. Only downfall was the fries which were luke warm and clearly not particularly fresh, but I'd still give this spot another try if in the area. read more

Food and service were both great. Had the crabcakes and the mozzarella, tomato, arugula salad-both excellent. Cocktails were also good! Only little disappointment was they have no high chairs. Luckily we had portable ones at the rental house we were staying in.. Otherwise it wouldn't have worked. I found it a little odd.. The host said "they ordered them, and they were waiting for them to come in". They've been open for months and they're still waiting?? Every we always stay at the beach house in Corolla. But because of some changes we decided to stay at Duck last year! I might sound crazy to just write a review for them a year later after I ate there but at least I wanted to share my first experience in Duck. For me personally, I didn't feel like I like Duck at all compared to Corolla, but I did love all the restaurants around there! And this is one of my top favorite restaurant and I still can feel the taste of their food. It was delicious! I love how they have a mini band in front of the restaurant and it kinda attractive and romantic. Service was amazing, my server was so sweet and she also told us the trick how to get rid of fly ( she told us to pour Tabasco on a napkin ) and it worked!
