I love this place! I am giving it 5 stars for both the food and the service. The food is exactly what you would expect - very good diner food. The eggs are always perfectly cooked and the hash browns are soft but crispy. The pancakes are to die for! Try the chocolate chip and banana pancakes!! Perfectly cooked with a soft inside and a slightly crispy outside. They are always packed for brunch but the owner is amazing and always seems to find a space for us. We are expecting a baby, and he is always taking time to ask how I am feeling. He caters to all adults and children alike in such a sweet manor. The service staff is great, sweet and accommodating. Good, solid diner food, large portions, quick service. The garden salad with grilled chicken is big enough for two meals, as is the roast turkey dinner. Spinach pie and Greek salad are both great. The homemade potato chips are amazing. My daughter loves the ham and egg on a roll sandwich. The two reasons I did not give them 5 stars are: 1. When you order food for delivery, they rush you through the order and do not always listen well, and sometimes get the details wrong. However, in their defense, they will re-deliver what they've messed up. Make sure you ask them to repeat the order back to you, even though the guy will try to rush you off the phone -- that way you can catch the mistakes before the wrong order arrives at your house. 2. Sometimes in a delivery, the lettuce or especially cucumber in the salads is not as fresh as it could be. However, again, if you mention this when you place your order, your salad will arrive crisp and fresh. In general though, this is a good place, and well worth trying. The owner is really friendly, as others have mentioned, and their hours are very convenient. We ordered a vegetarian panini sandwich and a belgian waffle for a takeout. the bread on the panini was burned, and quite soggy to boot by the time we laid our hands on it. waffle was subpar, as well--pretty sure it was of the frozen variety. the strawberries on the waffle were nice and fresh though. home fries had ok texture but were oh so bland. both the person taking the order and the delivery guy were polite. read more

What was once and ugly duckling is now a Beautiful Swan. An NO I'm not Kidding. The Cobble Hill Coffee Shop which to notable people of Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens was called The Doughnut Shoppe prior to its 360...heck let's call it a 1080 remodeling and service under new ownership is nothing more than a "Prize Possession" here in my neighborhood. First off lets speak about the former store. The Doughnut Shoppe was run by a Greek Family who always seemed to have a problem with the way their customers ordered their food. An the number one person who had to be the "ball-buster" of this epic failure of a former diner was the owner/waiter named George. George was a thin man with glasses who always and yes I mean always told you HOW TO ORDER YOUR FOOD!!!! No matter what your ordered their was always a problem. Let's just jump ahead to almost 2 years ago to what is known now as "The Cobble Hill Coffee Shop." Under "NEW MANAGEMENT," and yes its owned and operated by a Greek Manager who has to be one of the friendliest people I have ever met named Frank has seriously taken hospitality and convenience to a level that fits Cobble Hill/ Carrol Gardens. I know most people here will pretty much knock the size of the diner. But let's remember, it's a DINER. Not a five star restaurant. Frank remodeled the whole dark and upsetting Doughnut Shoppe to a modern 50's esque Diner. Service: With the exception of George still being an employee their till last month when he retired (an he hated taking orders from Frank), the service is nice as it would be in any diner. Nothing to fancy. An yes plenty of customers do get upset with having to wait outside for a table. Which you can complain about the size by all means, but if you ask anyone living in this neighborhood about rent, then we can tell you about the hefty sum it is for an apartment yet alone how much it would be to occupy the next building to extend a diner. So really let's use two cents here. An if you want to extend a restaurant, look no further than Vinny's of Carroll Gardens. Cause to many people talk bad about the size, but always come back loving the food. Food: I recommend the Chicken Slovaki Deluxe if your having dinner there. There Belgian waffles are pretty good as well. If your willing to try something fresh, their banana pancakes are sweet and delicious. Decor: Like I said it's like a modern take on a 50's diner. With the normal elevated seats by the counter and mirrors around the diner itself. In conclusion, I'd only like to state that I have one problem with the Diner itself. The problem being is as soon as you walk into the diner up against the wall in the left corner their is a mediocre review of the diner it self that speaks bad about the preparation of food (i.e pancakes and whatnot). The ambiance is great at this warm and well lit diner and the elderly gentleman running the place greets customers by name and dolls out free coffee with gusto. The food is substandard even by diner standards, eggs and hash browns where bland and the eggs undercooked. When a dinner can't do basic fare like this its not going to work. My partner and I were looking for a place to rest after walking around the neighborhood for a few hours. This diner served us well. The menu seemed standard (though that's hardly a complaint) with a good variety of sandwiches, soups, and breakfast classics. My partner's donut was clearly not made in house, but who cares? It's a donut. It hit the spot. My espresso was perfectly acceptable, strong and fragrant. The reason I'm giving this place 4 stars out of 5, though, is the 'muffin'. Expecting a soft cake-y sweet confection, I instead got a cornbread muffin with blueberries. They sliced it in half, and copiously buttered it before putting it on a flat top to develop a really delicious crust. It was quite rich and I only had one half before quitting, but it was a good decision nonetheless. Were I to visit this place more often, I'm sure 4/5 would be excessive. Recently I have been coming to this diner every morning. The owner always greets me and makes me feel super welcome, he occassionally comes to my table and personally greets me again. The servers are very nice. Its definitely comforting to have found this sweet honey pot when you are new to the city. I will continue to come here each morning before work. The prices are great. While the food was ok, the service was lousy. Waitress was rude, almost like she didn't want to be bothered. She took order with attitude, when she brought the food out she practically thru it on the table without acknowledging who gets what food. Just put on the table and walked away. I got a Texas Burger Platter and an Egg Cream-- so good! All their burgers are a hefty 1/2 pound and the burger platters are all under $10 for a solid amount of food. The Egg Cream was delicious and tasted like an ice cream float. All around great food for a great price! read more

It used to be friendly and kind with fantastic service and good diner food. They made you feel at home. There's nothing really special about the food here except the fact it's a friendly, typical diner type place with reliable standards. The previous owner/manager retired and the only thing that's changed is the new staff are all dressed in black and younger. The families in the area come here with their kids and solo diners can sit at the counter so everyone is happy. I understand that the cook is still here and has been cooking for 40 years. The decor and furnishings are the same as they have been and it's open until 11 pm now. I like breakfast here and my bf and I asked if we could have rice instead of potatoes and they accommodated albeit pilaf and not white rice. Considering all the hip new restaurants in the area from Ethiopian to Hungarian and everything in between, sometimes you just want a burger that's not McDonald's and this is the place. The new management is honoring the old Cobble Hill Coffee Shop tradition by not bringing in any hipster hype which you can get anywhere these days. This is the closest diner to my apartment and I've been a number of times. I desperately want it to be good since the staff and owner are nice, it's an old fashioned place, and the prices are fair, but it just has terrible food. It wouldn't take a lot of effort to make it much better. Coffee is terrible because it is percolated. Fries are from a frozen package and served unsalted. Sandwiches are served on stale packaged buns when the neighborhood has some of the best bakeries in NYC supplying other restaurants nearby. Omelets are consistently overcooked to the point of being burned brown on the outside. These are all things that are easily fixable with a little bit of effort. read more

2.5 stars...When this place took over the Donut House they really cleaned up the place and made it look great, they started strong and the food and service was an improvement. Now that they're in their daily groove everything has gone down and the result is a sub-par typical diner. The place is still pretty clean but it's a cramped busy diner with mediocre food. The menu is of the typical diner and the prices are dirt cheap but the food is pretty disappointing and the service from the Mexican waiters are also pretty horrible. The only good thing I must say about their food is they love to use lots of fresh fruit (especially strawberries) which is a good touch. For a couple prime examples are last time I was here I asked for my bacon to be well-done/crispy and a blueberry muffin on the side and much later on they informed me all they had were bran and corn muffins (which were very dry) and I got limp undercooked bacon. This experience is about par for them, definitely not an isolated incident. read more

Rude service! I arrived at this diner with friends at 8am on a Sunday morning. The food was acceptable at best and the service was horrible. After approximately 40 minutes at the restaurant, after we were done with our meals and were still finishing our coffee, the staff demanded that we leave. They could have asked nicely but they did not. They said that people were waiting for our table. This was not true. The restaurant was pretty crowded but not full and there was no line. I am not the type of person who spends 2 hours hoarding a table in a restaurant. In fact, I would be the first person to give up my table if I knew someone was waiting. This was the only time I have ever been asked to leave a restaurant. I will never go back! If this place had a little competition, it would quickly be out of business. read more

Ok. I never write reviews on diners but I have to write for these guys. WHAT is up with the C grade. Well I think its BS. This place is clean the food is fresh, and they have a C. Well I went to the DOH site and looked at there violations. Turns out the fridge was broke over night. Inspectors came in as soon as they opened before the had a chance to remove the food. They received violations for the food being 42 degrees as opposed to 38. What a crock. The owners are super nice. You have to wonder how the system works for everyplace to have an A. I ate at another local place and I was roaches, but they had an A in the window. The bottom line, this place rocks. I will continue to eat there with my family. They have been waiting for a reinspection for 2 months. Good luck I hope you guys stick around. read more

Authentic bad service. After asking for a coffee refill the manager asked my party when we were going to leave though there were no other waiting customers and even a few empty tables.
