I appreciate how Dr. Coccia explained the options I had. It was good i stayed to get the surgery done while I was there because it ended up being pretty serious for me to have it removed I was so impressed by each of my nurses, doctors and especially my surgeon Dr. Coccia. He was informative, proactive and had great bedside manner. He made me comfortable and turned an unexpected stay in the ED as enjoyable as one can make it. It looks like I will have very minimal scarring which is an added bonus. My post-op appointment was a great experience. His staff is efficient and so is Dr. Coccia. I ended up in ER for an emergency appendices where Dr. Coccia was my surgeon. I was very lucky to have such an experienced and caring surgeon. I was rushed to ER in late June with an appendix issue. Dr Coccia soon appeared in my ER bay and calmly explained that after blood work and Cat Scan I had a perforated appendix and an infectious access leaking into my abdomen. He explained it was serious ( high white blood cell count, close to sepsis) but also had a plan. Antibiotic IVs and abcess drain. Four days later under his care and his daily visits I was released to continue antibiotics at home. Once the infection was resolved and my abdominal inflamation calmed down, Dr Coccia removed my appendix. I was operated on at 7am and home at 10:30. Three week recovery, two follow up visits to Dr Coccia l, and I was fully released August 23rd. I feel great. Dr Coccia is an excellent surgeon and is also a very caring person. He seems very aware of his patients' feelings. He exudes confidence when explaining a course of action. I recommend him without reservation. read more

So where do I Begin. I must say I've been to a lot of doctors in my 63 years. Dr Coccia is one of the most amazing doctors I have ever been to. I was so scared to get this triple hernia surgery done because of all the horror stories I have heard from other people with different doctors, not only was I up the first day walking around the first day of surgery, I was walking up and down the street the second day going up and down my stairs the third day with little to no pain. All I took was extra strength Tylenol.To say that he is an amazing doctor is an understatement. Not only did he call me to check on me the night of the surgery but my follow-up visits have been amazing. My recovery is amazing. I have never felt this good in years. I was referred to Dr. Coccia personally by a specialist I had seen. The specialist went into how he knew Dr. Coccia and how he was one of the best in his field so I went into visiting with Dr. Coccia with a lot of confidence. His office is like any other and is behind Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach. Just park at the back main structure, parking is ample and free here (unlike the rest of Laguna Beach) I waited the normal waiting period that you do in a doctors office and saw Dr. Coccia. He immediately made me feel relaxed and really didnt seem like I was seeing a doctor, he was very easy to talk to and interjecting some humour as I was discussing with him what was going on. As I shared my story he asked the normal questions that doctors do and then he confirmed to me what the specialist had previously mentioned, that I had to have a certain body part removed. He then went into explaining what the procedure involved in detail and shared his personal stats with the procedure. He was very assuring about the whole thing. As the examination was being conducted he was very conversational about normal stuff not relating to why i was there for, I liked that. He had his nurse schedule me an appointment for the procedure. Fast forward a few weeks later, Dr. Coccia saw me the morning of the procedure and jokingly goes, "sorry I'm drinking this (Starbucks coffee) in front of you but I'm sure you want me to have this right now" He apologized because you are not allowed to drink anything 6 hours before surgery and it was very early in the morning when I saw him. I was very nervous, I had never had surgery before but this comment just made me not worry about what was about to happen. He asked me about how I handled pain and goes, don't worry I'm going to write you a script for some meds for afterwards. One of the nurses comes out and goes "Dr. Coccia you are here, I wish I was with you on this one", she then goes to me "you got a great doctor here, we all (nurses) love him here" I then went into saying how I had the specialist say the same thing. I can't thank Dr. Coccia enough for putting me out of my misery and taking my gallbladder out! I had gallstones with symptoms appearing seemingly out of the blue. I was resistant to having surgery and tried an endless array of vitamins and detox programs to no avail. I even tried the cholesterol lowering medication as a last resort which literally made my head spin! I was out of options. Eating anything was a battle and I was constantly nauseous and in so much pain- I felt like my innards were being "sandpapered"! I met Dr. Coccia three years ago as I lay in a hospital bed at Mission Hospital Laguna Beach. He came to see me as a result of a referral from a friend who is also a doctor at the hospital. I had suffered from Diverticulitis for thirty years and no one had ever suggested surgery. Dr. Coccia asked me if I would agree to surgery to resection my colon. I said if he thought I needed surgery, why would I not follow his instructions? He performed the resection surgery within weeks. The surgery lasted 5 hours and I spent 5 days in the hospital.
