Basic place to go in Yorkville to get Mexican food. Cocina Madre is kind of authentic but also has enough to appeal to outsiders' tastes. It has the usual stuff like burritos, tacos, or whatever. However there's more than that of course. The prices are pretty okay for portions. A lot of menu items are familiar. It's got what one would expect from an Americanized Mexican place. The menu isn't particularly extensive but it's got most things covered it seems. For sure can't be complete without alcohol. It's about $9 for a margarita. We got a couple of these including peach. For sure you can't forget about the food. Of course any legitimate Mexican restaurant has to have complimentary chips and salsa. Yes they thankfully have this. It's about $9 for a burrito. We got these without meat, just vegetables. Okay but basic. They have bottles of hot salsas that kick this up at least. Other menu items are more authentic. They have meaty options including beef and chicken, and classic options like tortas. Crazy busy place at times and service can take about forever. I ordered über eats tonight. I tried the Birria tacos and chips and guac. The tacos were crispy on the outside, cheesy and seasoned meat inside. The meat wasn't spicy at all which was a little surprising as I was expecting a little spice. The sauce to dip the tacos in was very tasty. The chips were delivered cold. I just heated them up in my air fryer and they were perfect with the guac. I've never eaten there or ordered from there before tonight, so I can't comment to the service or the ambiance. The ambiance feels like you at your own house it's calm with some quiet music playing in the background. It's an awesome restaurant with great food. And I enjoyed every penny I have spent there I have been eating there since they opened and it's only been getting better and better. And the service is also great. I can't speak to what the dine-in experience is like, but we are so happy to have a great little take out place like this in the area. $1 taco nights are a no-brainer (we prefer the Al pastor tacos. Delicious!), but don't let that stop you from trying other dishes any night of the week. Admittedly, I had never had or even heard of this before, but you also have to try all the BIRRIA options too...our personal favorites are the birria egg rolls and the birria torta. I had been anticipating this restaurant opening and yesterday I finally got a chance to check it out. I placed an order for pick up. I had looked over the menu and everything sounded delish. Of course the item on the menu that I ordered they were not offering yesterday. It's in the menu and it's only noon and you don't have it? Hmm... I decided to not let that bother me too much and I figured I will have to go back to try the guisado de puerco. So as an appetizer I ordered the Nachos Madre. I picked the meat to be al pastor. The menu stated that it came with beans, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole. Well I discovered when I got home that my nachos did not come with guacamole and were quite dry. Disappointed again with the lack of guac of I have to say the al pastor meat was good! Very flavorful. My husband ordered a steak chimichanga and steak burrito. He ate one right away and got the other to eat later. He said both were good and the burrito was good even reheated. I ordered the carne asada. It was ok, a decent piece of skirt steak but it lacked flavor. All the meals we got came with rice and beans. Rice was good but I didn't care for the beans. I did like the corn tortillas very much. I probably will end up updating this review because I feel like this is a place that I will end up loving and frequenting. read more

Ordered a burrito dinner and an enchilada dinner to go. After driving 20 minutes home with the food I was sadly disappointed. The burrito was inedible due to the amount of spice. It was HOT (and our family loves spicy food!) and with the enchilada dinner, the sauce was so salty that it made the enchiladas themselves inedible. The only things we were able to eat was the rice and beans which were very good! Side note: It says on the menu that the enchilada dinner comes with a side salad. It does not. It comes with lettuce and tomato on top of it - (no dressing.) I called back after discovering the issues with the food and asked to speak to a manager. I spoke to a very nice gentleman who I believed was the owner (not sure) and he was amazing! He offered a refund or to have his driver come all the way to my house with new food. I declined as I had already gone to a different Mexican restaurant and picked up more food but immensely appreciated his kindness. This place definitely has a manager who is great and personable, maybe a different chef and clearer menu would help this new restaurant improve? read more

Took my kid here after picking them up, but prior to heading home to Chicago. We should have just kept on driving. The place was freezing cold. My kiddos had to leave their coats on and ended up using my coat as a blanket. The basket of chips looked like they had been leftover from a previous customer. My kiddo had the enchilada and they were terrible. They looked like someone spooned some flavorless shredded chicken into some tortillas, folded them in half instead of rolling them, and tossed them into the microwave. The sauce was inedible because it was incredibly salty. I had a steak chimichanga and it was just absolutely dosed in an obnoxiously spicy sauce. I love spice, but this was just unexpected and unpleasant. I would rather this place be counter service instead of attempting to be a full service restaurant. It was a young staff that may have been family or something. It would just be easier to let people order at the counter and have them get their food when it's ready. My kids hated and it didn't make any sense to complain while we were there. We're not going to make a fuss. We asked for our check. I left a 20% tip and we left. I'll chalk it up as a lesson and we won't be back. My recommendation is find another place to eat while this place find a way to improve. read more

Simply put, Fast Burrito in Yorkville is 100 times better. My 11 year old rated them a 4 out of 10. He had the tamales which he said was so disgusting he couldn't even finish them. We also had the birria and nachos. If you haven't had birria yet, go to a real Mexican place in Chicago first and try it. I recommend Ruby's. If you want roast beef on a tortilla, this is the place for you. The nachos were gross. I couldn't even finish them and my kid only took one bite and spit it out. And the cherry on top is some how (and I know I put $5.00 on the tip line) the waitress thought I left a $20.00 tip on a $32.00 purchase?!? How? It's not even a real sit down restaurant. That's okay. I just paid $24 for my food and my order was messed up, missing tacos and cold so I called and they talked as if I was being a inconvenience so I went back and got my food and no exaggerating again it was cold to the touch and my tacos barely had any steak on them. Went there tonight for dinner as we have been anticipating this place opening for quite some time. Arrived about 5 PM and there were two people in front of us in line to order food. We were doing takeout. It took quite a while to get our food. But I chalked it up to 1. Growing Pains 2. Them cooking food to order (not pre-made) We didn't care as we were excited to have an authentic Mexican restaurant. We finally received our order and were on our way. I ordered a Steak Chimichanga with red sauce which was amazing. I put hot sauce on the first bite and it set the tone for the rest of the meal. I like a good amount of spice and this didn't disappoint. My wife ordered the 3-fish taco plate which she said was definitely awesome. I didn't pay too much attention to her meal as I was having my own moment with mine. Kid 1 ordered a chicken burrito with rice and chicken only. He said he really liked the chicken but liked Chipotle's rice better. Chipotle... really??? Said the rice is dry compared to chipotle. Kid 2 ordered a steak burrito. This is his new favorite place. He finished his steak burrito before the rest of us were 1/2 done with our meals. He tried my chimichanga (which he has never had before). Said. Woah. That is really good. Can we go there real quick so I can get one of those.... I guess that is a good review. We will definitely be back. Without question. I look forward to exploring their extensive menu. I really hope this place lasts... and judging be this meal... it will. Only bad part was how long it took to receive my order... but like I said...they are going through growing pains. The amount of food on both a taco dinner and an enchilada plate was ample: enough for leftovers, but most of the meal was bland. The salsa was spicy (a plus) but the chips were stale. The tacos were ok: sauce was rather tasteless, but contained a lot of meat. The ala carte tamale had no sauce and little filling and dry. What to say about the beans and the rice? Nothing special: tasted like they both came from a can. The service was good, the space is clean and the server friendly. I'm not sure, though, what makes this food authentic: no special taste to the sauces or the rest. This restaurant can't decide whether it's carry-out or dine in. Carry out orders are quicker than dine in and our two meals were served at different times. We might try it out again after they've been open longer, but will not abandon our favorite authentic Mexican restaurant 20 miles away. read more

Husband had Carne Asada steak--very small portion and couldn't cut it with the steak knife they gave him. I had good beef flautas. Rice was okay but beans tasted like they were made from pinto beans out of a can. It was very busy so obviously many like the food here. read more
