I came to this location after work on a Friday for a gel mani and basic pedi. They saw me pretty quick on a busy evening. I wasn't happy with their services though. The place is highly unsanitary. The woman at the reception had on old gloves that she did my gel manicure with. She also alternated between my manicure and payments. I requested she painted my nails thin but they look blobby. They aren't smooth. She also wiped my hands with a moldy smelling hot towel and massaged lotion onto my smelly hands with her unclean gloves. When time came for my pedi I requested she change her gloves. She refused and got someone else to do it. This lady scrubbed my callouses poorly and painted my toes too quick. I asked if she did a clear top coat, she lied saying she did. She did not. The paint job was so sloppy I asked her three times to clean it up. Needless to say, the work did not last me two whole days and I did sit an hour for my toes to dry (with the machine constantly turning off). They also didn't line the tub with a bag or anything :/ I understand they work long hours hunched over. I paid and I tipped both people servicing me. Will never be returning. read more

She did everything so neatly, paid attention to every little detail, no matter how small and she kept everything clean and dust free. I am completely impressed by her. She was considerate of me having sensitive skin and I can honestly say that for the first time, I was relaxed at a nail salon. I got acrylics with shellac here. It has been a little over a week & my acrylic nails are pealing up to the point where I had to buy nail glue to glue the nails back on. My shellac has chipped in a nail & there seem to be bubbles in the paint job. The ladies are nice & it is a clean salon. But I paid $90 for nails to not even last a week. I had heard great things from friends, but even my friend who came with me is experiencing her nails pealing up. This review is long overdue. I've been coming here for almost two years now, and I always leave with flawless manis. Their gel manicures are $30, and worth every penny because they last forever (3+ weeks) I've also gotten pedis here and they were good - the massage chairs are bomb. I find that it's either packed or nearly empty, but call ahead to make a reservation! Now for some tips, - bring cash for a discount. It's nominal (5% I believe) but saving money is always a plus - the staff here are friendly but don't speak perfect English. If you're looking for a nail technician to have conversations with, this prob isn't the place for you. If you're looking for a nail salon to get fleeky nails, look no further. - they close on Sundays - if you have brittle/flimsy nails and are getting a gel mani, ASK FOR A SECOND TOP COAT. This place is run down. They barely greet you when you come in and everything is dirty. I came in for a pedi and it took the woman a few minutes to even seat me, not because they were busy, because she was slow moving and on the phone. During lunch rush. My POS pedi took and hour. And then she had to be kidding me asking if I then wanted a mani. Yea right. I had to have someone come over and fix my pedi because I kept trying to tell her as she is painting my nails that the edges of my toenails were jagged and she kept telling me later, shooing me and continued painting. Finally I exclaimed that the nails aren't smooth and you can't keep painting them until they are filed correctly. Because they looked plain bad. Another girl came and fixed them. She barely scrubbed or massaged me at all and took out hot stones and basically just wiped them on me. One of them came off, and because I work in a corporate environment and it looks tacky AF to have 1 nail missing, I urgently came to this place to get it all off. The staff couldn't seem to understand that these were acrylics...either that or they have never had to remove them before, which is surprising for a nail salon. My "technician" took out, and I kid you not, an old metro card and started jamming it in my nails to get them off. At first, I was a little shocked because I'm sure this was not the right way to remove acrylics, nor is it professional. But I was so desperate to get rid of them, and she was doing it gently, that I didn't mind too much. However, when paying the bill, I got charged a whopping $10 to get them removed. I repeat, I paid 10 bucks to essentially have someone use a metro card to remove my nails...something I could have just done myself. I asked why it's 10 bucks and the Asian lady at the counter said that's what it costs. I was speechless that I quickly paid, tipped the nail girl (now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I did...), and left. Yesterday I was in desperate need for a manicure in midtown. So I researched Coco Ruby Salon and was impressed with the reviews, so I decided to give them a try. I have to say, my manicurist was amazing! I had to remove my gel manicure, and soak off my tips (which is a tedious process). This lovely woman was extremely gentle and patient. She then proceeded to give me a beautiful new French tip manicure with a UV gel topcoat, all for the low price of $45!!!! I was expecting to pay soo much more for all of her great work. So I decided to try out Coco Ruby after finding out that my preferred nail salon closed for good. I saw that Coco had good reviews on yelp, and had good pricing on gel manicures that I desperately needed. It might only be me, but I feel like 8th avenue around 34th street is the shadiest place in the city. So I wasn't sure what to think of having to go to a second floor for a nail salon. I like to be able to see the business I'm walking into. So I go on Thursday about 6, and business is booming. The pedicure chairs are almost full, the manicure desks are also almost all in use. I was greeted and asked to choose a color and was told to be seated while I waited. Waiting was about 15 mins. I got the older lady who was so funny. She dashes around the nail salon. So she would dash from her station, to the reception area. Her manicure was great. She asked me what shape I wanted, and normally I get a square shape. But she suggested I get a round shape since some nails had broken and it would be even this way. She did about 3 coats of polish, which did change the color of the polish that I had chosen but it wasn't a big deal for me. The reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the following: the price of a gel manicure is $30 so I gave her $40 in cash. She came back with $5 as my change. I loved her work, loved the shape, loved the polish job. I would've given her the full $10 as tip had she given me back my full change. Because she decided on her own tip, I left her with only the $5 she took from me. SIDENOTE: I dont think this is the most hygienic place. They have a random liquid in a bottle that says, Antiseptic that they spray on your hands. For all I know, that could be just water when it doesn't have any manufacturer labels. I stopped in today for a mani/pedi and some waxing before catching the LIRR home because I knew everything in my area would be closed by the time I got there. I waited for a good 2 minutes before someone asked what service I wanted. I waited a few more minutes before being shown to a pedicure chair. The girl worked quickly and didn't really ask me any questions. Before I knew it was putting base coat on my toenails. She didn't use a pumice stone or lotion on my incredibly dry feet... So what was the point of this pedicure? I wish I had noticed sooner because I would have spoke up. She was more attentive with my manicure, but didn't polish up to my cuticle. There is a small gap at the base of each nail. Overall, they do look good. She took me to the back for waxing. I requested she wax my eyebrows, lip and chin. She didn't seem to know what waxing your chin and lip entailed and asked me to point to what parts she wanted me to remove the hair from. I was a bit baffled to say the least. Came in on a Friday around 1pm. Got an Acrylic Fill In that cost me $30. A little more than usual but Choie(?) did a great job so it was worth it. The shop is located on the 2nd Fl and is quiet and clean. The workers were courteous and took their time (no rush jobs). They have a large selection of OPI and Essie polishes. My only complaint is that I made an appointment but it took 20 minutes before someone started my nails. I came to this nail salon and I was completely shocked with the amount of attention I received. As soon as I walked in I was greeted and asked what I wanted and immediately after picked a color. I was taken right away for my pedicure which was amazing, the lady who attended me took her time and I even go a massage with a hot stone, which I've never got before! (For free btw). Coco Ruby is the only walk-in nail salon in midtown (I called maybe six places that day) that 1) knew what I was talking about and 2) offered the service. She said nothing and just douse my feet in antiseptic fluid which burned liked crazy. She did a half ass job on my callus scrub and charged me $12 extra for it. This is probably one of the worst manicures I've gotten. Not only did the technician inflict several injuries on me (pushed my cuticles so far back it hurt, cut my cuticles without care that I bled in three different spots), I watched the technician next to me use a cuticle cutter to trim her own nails...meaning they do not clean their tools between use. EXTREMELY UNSANITARY. The technician also left my nails rough on the ends...like she didn't use a nail file to smooth them out AND I can see the distinction between the two layers. I came here to remove my gel tips from a different salon and get a basic manicure. I haven't had tips for a long time so I'm not an expert. The other times I've had them taken off, they were removed with a power file tool. My manicurist here took the gel color off with the power tool, then used a metro card to take the tips off. It seemed a little odd and definitely hurt but I didn't complain because I figured it might cause less damage to my nails than the tool would. Pros: my manicurist, though quiet, was very sweet. I think they originally told me it would cost $21 and I was charged $22. I didn't get a mini massage while my nails were drying. MAJOR Con: I paid attention to the sanitary situation based on the other reviews I had read. There was a UV machine for the tools in the back but I didn't see anyone use it. After my manicure, I watched the woman who did my nails walk over with the tools to do a pedicure-- the tools were never sanitized in between. When I walked in, four nail technicians were playing on their phones. Three other technicians were busy helping customers. The nail clippers and other tools did not seem clean. I asked for my nails to be round and she made them square. No big deal. The nail polish looks sloppy. I mentioned to the technician that her hair was falling into my nails while they were wet. She fixed the nail but didn't move her hair away from the front of her. It kept happening and ultimately, I have a mark on my middle nail from where her hair landed. When she was done with my nails, she washed the tools in the sink with water. She did not clean them properly!!! I had my nails painted gel two days ago and I already have multiple nails that have chips. Reviews on yelp stated that you get a discount when you pay cash. I wasn't offered that. Gel costs $30.00. I have been here for 2 yrs and always thought this was an average place for the price of gel nails. $30 for basic gel was not a bad deal for the location and the outcome. However today, I had very impatient and rude manicurist that made me change my thoughts about this place. The manicurist did not communicate rather just forced to my wrist to move at her convenience. Hello, you can say "please turn/move your hand" I waited and sat patiently until my nails were all done... only to see bubbles and even pieces of little strings found under the top coat. When I mentioned this to the manicurist, she said she wasn't able to see the mistakes then eventually the owner came to fix my nails.
