As per usual I had a great experience at Modern Spa. I had an appointment. I had an appointment with Chloe at 1:00 but she was able to see me an hour early. She did an amazing job with my nails and I got a beautiful metallic blue manicure. It wasn't a polish or a powder, but it was a kind of tint that she put on with a plastic applicator. She told me that she could make it last and I think they look great. I'm not surprised that I had a great experience at Modern Spa and Chloe is always the nail tech that I trust the most. She's very talented, quick, efficient, and knowledgeable. I look forward to my next appointment and I'll make sure to call ahead to book an appointment with Chloe. read more

I have been here a few times now. But last one was the worst. They are always slow - very slow. I asked if they could do pedicure and manicure at the same time. At first said yes. Then once they started I asked if they'd do both. They said no. For the spa pedicure I kept asking what the regular/basic one was. They kept pointing me at the mid priced ones. I just wanted to see what the regular spa pedicure was - not be upsold! I picked a color. They started the pedicure and the color was SO different. It was so hard for them to find the right color that matched. Then after 1+ hour of being there and they hadn't even started the 15 minute massage OR the manicure I just decided to leave. If you want a timely manicure/pedicure with good communication, don't come here. It was so hard to just get what I requested. Never coming back! Just the worst experience yesterday. I did a thorough google review. Given this place many multiple tries, always feel mad at myself at the end for tipping generously and being kind. No more. *Rushed service (even if not full). *Behaving like Im asking too much (when i ask as nicely as possible to not be so rough-- I get cut always here?!) *(Gel driers) Equipment is badly used and not cleaned between manicures. *Cuticle cutter/push back tools not sterilized (at least mine weren't yesterday). That pulling outwards of the skin method w/the cuticle cutter is THE WORST, who teaches them that?? *Old polish, causing air bubbles, peeling on sides--Thick. Not matching color on nail samples (Gel colors) *They get upset if you tip anything under 20% (i tip 25% bc I feel for the workers, and try to make up for those who tip low). *Check out was a clown show on that machine to enter your number(post payment). Too much to write on this, smh. Today Im getting my gel manicure redone, at the corner salon on 72nd/Columbus. They saw my nails and were shocked I paid almost $50 for this....my cuticles are red sore. Too many places in the neighborhood to choose from, and not be treated this way. I've been going here since they opened. I was originally a customer of their shop next door. I go here primarily for waxing and a few times per year for a mani-pedi. This year they have charged me FOUR different prices for the same waxing service. At the start of the year I paid $21. My last visit it cost $35. This is when I said something and even showed them different charges from June and August. It didn't matter so I will no longer go back. Even if I wind up paying this somewhere else I can support the fact that they take advantage of customers like this. read more

Very unprofessional experience. I booked an appointment for an acrylic full set, but when I arrived, the first nail tech told me it would be $140 for what I wanted. I explained that this was not what I had booked and that I only wanted acrylic. I kept asking questions because I do not get my nails done often and was trying to understand the difference, but instead of explaining it calmly, she became frustrated and started raising her voice. I repeatedly said I wanted acrylic powder, and she kept telling me that "was not a thing" and that she only does powder. However, the nail tech who eventually helped me later confirmed that acrylic powder was the correct term. The first tech kept telling me to get up and ask the manager questions because she said she did not understand what I wanted, even though I was only trying to clarify the service I had booked. At one point, she was yelling enough that other workers had to come over and calm her down. Nikki ended up doing my nails, and she was very kind, professional, and answered my questions respectfully. I really appreciated her help. However, the way the first nail tech treated me made the whole experience extremely uncomfortable. I never raised my voice or was rude to her. I was simply asking questions, and she made a scene. For the price I paid, the service and overall experience were terrible. I would not recommend this salon. read more

I've never had my nail look this bad so quickly after getting them done. They looked pretty clunky right after being done- which should have been my first clue. The top coat start chipping days after and this is what they look like 1 week later. I've truly never had my powder gel nails do this before. I also had a strange situation where I had someone from the nail salon two doors down do my nails. I didnt think much of it (thinking same management or something) but now I don't know if this horrible manicure is a reflection of Modern or the girl herself. I started coming here about 7 years ago for gel, dip, & Japanese gel manicures, and I was a very loyal customer. However, this past week they have lost my business completely. I made an appointment for a manicure, and then sat and waited for over an hour to be seen. Michelle the manager finally got around to seeing me, and I received a fairly mediocre manicure that I spent $80 on. There are some strange bulbous spots in the gel build up in some places, but whatever. The next day on Monday, the gel on my thumbs just peeled off because it wasn't set correctly. I was very frustrated, and went back to have this fixed. I expressed that this wasn't okay, and my two nails were fixed. Then on Thursday, the gel on my thumbs peeled off again!!!! When I came in to get this fixed for the second time, I expressed how I have now spent over 3.5 hours at this salon in the past week, and how I have been so loyal for years. I was nodded at and then given two $5 off certificates at the end for my troubles, which can only be used once at a time. As if they think I'm coming back there?? As of today new nail has started peeling. Again, this is 4 days after a gel manicure & me notifying the manager that this is a problem. There are about 50 nail salons on 72nd st alone, there is no reason to gamble on going to Modern Spa and wasting your money. read more

This review and pics are a week late. Modern Spa has always been my go-to spot, and I've even left a review before. But after my last visit, I just had to share how amazing it was! I finally found my nail artist--Lili! She did an incredible job on both my toes and hands. She was super careful and took the time to go above and beyond what I had asked for. Her creativity and kindness really stood out. From now on, I'll always request her! Overall, Modern Spa is fantastic with their service. Cannot recommend for dip/SNS. While the service was good, my nails were cracked, scratched, and chipped almost immediately after I left. Modern Spa is my favorite nail salon in the UWS. They make it super easy to book an appointment and they're always responsive. The team is friendly and attentive, and always make sure they understand what I want before we get started. I've been doing their Gel-X nails and have been so pleased how they come out. The application is easy and they last so long without lifting or chipping. They're also super gentle on my natural nails, which I really appreciate. And I have to give a special shoutout to Chloe--she's my favorite nail tech! She's great at nail art. Whenever I show her a picture of a design she executes it perfectly with great attention to detail. The cherry on top is that compared to other salons I find their prices are quite reasonable for the quality you're getting. Highly recommend checking them out. read more

Update: after reading the reviews I see the same exact manicurist who served me yesterday was rude to another woman. I asked for a nail polish change and was willing to pay full price for the color change. I requested another manicurist because I felt uncomfortable. I spoke with the manager and 15 mins later THIS same exact manicurist approached me with an attitude AND pressed 2 fingers into my upper thigh and asked rudely "you want color change?" I replied I want another manicurist to do it and she walked away. Extremely inappropriate, unprofessional service by this woman. The manager offered for me to come back tomorrow and they will do a free color change. I declined. I'll get serviced else where. Pedi rate 0/10 star. I went out the way for this salon after reading 4 stars but NEVER AGAIN. Pros: I was immediately greeted. The manager up front was kind. I received a complimentary green tea after I asked. Cons: My stylist started off pleasant. I don't know what happened. The regular pedi doesn't include a foot scrub. She seemed irritated with me or it may have been something else. All I can say is the vibe was off. The massage chairs in the way back of the salon look older than the ones up front. It was not a comfortable chair. There were nicer chairs available but I was put all the way in the back of the salon. When I asked the stylist how to turn on the massage, she seemed irritated by my question. I couldn't find the remote. ‍ The shape and polish of my nails, unsatisfactory. Based on reviews this place looks like a hit or miss depending on the stylist. In this economy, I won't be visiting establishments like this. I've had regular mani and pedis at a couple other salons in the area. I'm used to regular pedis that included 5 min foot rub and a good foot scrub. I came here on the evening of last Tuesday September 19th for a gel manicure and regular pedicure. I arrived at 7:45pm, which was probably too late and my fault. Unfortunately, my manicurist rushed my nails and it shows. I'm posting this review on Tuesday September 26 with photos taken less than a week after. As you can see, my gel manicure has uneven opacity and is flaking off. It has cracks in some areas and is completely peeling. It looks awful. Gel manicures should last at least two weeks!! I can't believe that I spent $70+ 20% tip for such a horrible job. I'm not one to complain, but I'm mad that I wasted my money on such poor service. I will have to go somewhere else to redo it. My pedicure was a similar color. During the pedicure, the manicurist did not wait at all between applying layers. Unfortunately in her rush, my manicurist had me put on my socks and shoes to leave way too soon after. I probably should have spoken up. When I got home, the pedicure was completely ruined. It was squished and the polish had to be redone. I went back a couple of days later and the staffer happily agreed to redo it free of charge. I had it redone on Saturday and paid a small tip regardless. I came here once before for a gel manicure which was good. This time was a disaster. The staff was nice and accommodating enough, but this quality is unacceptable. I would recommend: 1. NOT visiting this salon after 6 to avoid a rush job 2. Wearing flip flops for your pedicure 3. SMH**** I'm thinking all the 4 and 5 started reviews are for basic Manis and Pedis, because there is NO WAY this place would get those reviews if they did the work they did on me. I went in for a simple nail fix. The UV hard gel was separating from actual nail. I thought late get this fixed so it won't break. I was willing to do acrylic because it seems like many places don't do UV hard gel. I made an appt for 3:30pm. I was told I would have soak off my nail. No problem...however nail was cracked so I asked for tem.to cut it down first which is what is done at most salons. The person said no. That should've been indication that this was going to be not a great experience. I sat soaking for 20mins before someone came to me. I asked them again to cut it down. They said no it's fine. So I took it off myself. I waited another 20 mins to be acknowledged again and the women was running around doing 3 people nails, answering the phone, greeting people, picking up nail polish...everything. I was like ma'am you literally can't do it all. And why did I make an appt for it to be disregarded. I asked to be seen then because I made an appt and I wasn't sitting for 2hrs for a nail fix. She took me then and was rushing the entire time she was doing my nails. She kept getting up and doing other things that could've been done by other people. I told her the gel was to thin and and lumpy she said no it's fine, she could fix it. I'm like how ate you gonna fix it if you don't put more gel. I was over it by then. The nail salon itself is understated and the no frills aspect of the place feels very down to earth and old New York in a good way. I got the lemon ginger pedicure, it was ok but I still had dry skin after and it wasn't very pampering for 100$ she ran a lemon down my leg and put lotion with some plastic wrap around it not what I was expecting for the price. The massage was nice tho.. next time I'll get something basic and add a massage. I also didn't like how the tech hovered over me for the tip... it seemed expected and forced. I was in the area the other day for a doctors appointment and decided I was in desperate need of a mani-pedi before Christmas. So I hopped on Yelp and found this place, which had good reviews and a 10% off Yelp deal to boot! I was taken pretty much right away when I walked in. I asked about the pedicure options, and my nail technician Sue (Soo? Su? Not sure of the spelling) looked at how dry my feet were and recommended the Milk & Honey spa pedi ($72, and you get a mani for $10). I wish I was paying more attention to what was being done rather than looking at work emails on my phone, just so I could describe it better--there were rose petals involved and something that smelled lovely, heel treatment, warm lotion, a long thorough massage of the legs, etc. Plus the massage chair gave me a vigorous massage the whole time. She did a great job with my nails too, no stray polish, no cuts (I don't know what's up with a lot of places lately where they do a messy job, but glad that wasn't the case here). Afterwards, Michelle took over to do my regular mani, also neatly done, and using warm lotion in gloves to moisturize my hands. They spray the tools too, not sure with what, I assume to clean. Not sure if they sterilize? I am a little paranoid about that (would love if places used all new tools for each customer) but I didn't ask details. While I was drying my nails at the machines, Michelle gave me a back massage for a few minutes--it was too hard for me tbh (I know some people like that but my shoulder blades hurt for days) but I didn't say anything since I knew she was just trying to be nice. I wasn't a fan of the drying machines as the air blowing was quite cold, and even though I sat there for a long while, on a couple of my nails the polish got dented when I was opening my wallet later. I got a pale gold on my fingers and a sparkly red on my toes--festive holiday colors! Everyone was very nice (I liked that they wore masks too) and the place is clean & spacious. Easily the WORST experience I have ever had. I walked in, asked if they had time for a manicure. They did. I said I wanted a regular non gel manicure with nail art for a special event. The manager said it was fine but none of the techs wanted to do it. The woman who eventually did my nails kept telling me how hard it was for her to do, and tried to switch to gel mid manicure, with a different color I didn't ask for. She also watched videos while she painted my nails. The nails ended up being ok. I thanked her for her work and told her the experience was not great. I told her manager as well and she kept telling me how nice my nail tech was to me, despite the fact I was telling her I did not loke how I was treated. She also told me it was a misunderstanding. Everytime I've come here I have a nail break within 1 week because they do them so thin. They advertise cat eye manicure for $49 and then when I went to checkout they said it was $108. I asked them why and they made up reasons. One being that I had put short tips which shouldn't be $59 more? When I came to get them fixed after 1 week and 2 broken nails they took 30 mins soaking it off and ignored me whenever a new customer came in.
