Recently visited, and alas...it just wasn't as yummy as I remembered from five or six years ago. To be fair, the food is still very good but there was something missing for me! It might've been the location or ambience? I ordered the volcano fries, calamari, fish taco, mahi mahi plate, and ono on a bun. The fries were cooked to perfection and getting them volcano style was fun and spicy! The calamari came out super fresh and hot and we all enjoyed that dish. The fish tacos here are HUGE. At first I was like wow, two tacos for almost $17?? But after seeing how large they were, I completely understood. I did find the tacos to be slightly under well me despite their size and the portion. The fish was good, but in terms of flavor tacos were pretty one note my mother caught the fish plate, and she really enjoyed the moist mahi-mahi and the fresh tomatoes and coleslaw. Lastly, my fiancé got the ono burger and he really enjoyed it. It looked rather juicy. Admittedly, only had the fish tacos, but I am confidently declaring Coconut's Fish Tacos as the tits, and also the 2nd best fish taco on Maui (Jazzy's is the GOAT, everyone knows, everyone says). It's $15 for 2 tacos, but they PACK them up (see photo) and you can taste the high quality of the ingredients. #DelicousChaos The chipotle sauce add-on is also dope AF, but only if you like the spicy. This casual eatery was recommended by a couple travel sites and was in walking distance from our condo so we decided to eat here our first night in Maui. There was a line of about 20 people when we walked up but it moved relatively quickly and after ordering, our server brought our meal to our table within 20 minutes so not bad! My husband and I ordered the fish tacos to share with a side of fries. I'm not quite sure what type of fish they used but the tacos were excellent. The fish tasted fresh and the cabbage slaw crunchy, there was a nice contrast with the diced up sweet mango but my husband could have done without that element. Fries were hot and I put some malt vinegar on them for flavor which added a nice zest. All the employees were super friendly and looked eager to help. I can see why this is a popular spot. read more

Food came out incredibly fast. The calamari was the highlight of the meal. It's not the typical calamari ring or small tentacles. It's big chunk of calamari. Very tender and perfectly seasoned. Shrimp and chips were okay. The shrimps are small. Poke bowl is made with brown rice. The fish is tender, the rice is chewy and with crispy coleslaw. Love the layers of textures. This place is alright. We dined in and ordered quite a bit of food and sat outside. I'm glad the cashier told us that any order over $100, automatically gets 10% gratuity added so that we didn't end up double tipping. Husband and kid didn't care for the tacos (steak and fish) and the calm chowder was overly salty. The best dish was the coconut shrimp and fries. My friend and I arrived here at about 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. It was quite crowded and we stood in line for quite some time. When we got to the front approximately 15-20 minutes later, the cashier told us that they were known first for their fish tacos, then fish & chips, and then ono on brown rice. I ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer. It was very very good and you could can taste the coconut. For $10.99, you get 6 burning hot shrimp with a sweet chili sauce. I also ordered the fish and chips for $14.99. They were also tasty and came with one filet ono and one filet mahi mahi. It wasn't clear which was which, but one was rectangular and super dense. The other was triangular and very flaky. I enjoyed both about equally, it was nice to have contrasting textures. The best of both worlds really. The fries were crisp and fish was mouth burningly hot (read: burned mouth while eating it). It came with tartar sauce and what I think was a coconut milk based coleslaw. We were seated right by the window and although there were ceiling fans, it was quite hot inside. When we left, there was barely a line of just a couple of people so I'd recommend avoiding the lunch rush or picking up a to go order to eat on the beach or somewhere breezy. Overall, I had a great experience here and the coconut shrimp alone was worth the wait in line. I'd get that again every time. Perhaps I'd try a different entree, but I had absolutely no complaints about the fish & chips. This was another stop on my and my wife's honeymoon foodie excursion in Maui. I'm a little torn on this restaurant because we had one dish that was really incredible and one that was an utter disappointment. Ultimately, I had to deduct a star for the one dish, but I would still gladly come here again and perhaps try some other things on their menu. We decided to try out the seafood chowder along with the fish tacos. I'll get this right out of the way, the seafood chowder is absolutely magnificent!!! It's quite possibly the best I've ever had. It's creamy and thick, but not too thick. There's LOADS of various large fish meat chunks and vegetables and the flavors are just stellar. I can't find a single thing wrong or out of place with this chowder. Unfortunately, what this means is that the disappointment was the tacos. I seemed to have formed a bit of a stereotype for Hawaiian fish tacos because we've had several across multiple islands and the vast majority of them, including this restaurant's, had the same issue. I've noticed that most places rely too much on the quality of the fish in their tacos, which causes their seasoning and accompanying flavors to suffer. It's really sad, because the fish quality is fantastic, but it needs flavor other than just bland fish, there needs to be a balance. Sadly, these tacos just don't really taste like fish tacos, but I will say, I love their varied hot sauce selection. The seasoning and accompaniments in the tacos should help highlight the fish, but they do nothing for it here. Overall, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out, just pass on the tacos. I strongly recommend treating yourself to the chowder, it's to die for. I hope I get an opportunity to try some other stuff from the menu in the future. read more

Paid by card. This was another one of my favorite places to eat during my trip. Coconut's is located upstairs in the plaza and offers a lot of plaza parking. I went on a Friday night for dinner with a party of 6 and had to wait in a short line to order. We were able to order within 5 minutes and the cashier was nice. After we ordered we were able to find seating outside along the rail. We ordered the fish tacos, grilled mahi mahi fish and chips, fries, hot dog and fries, cheese quesadilla, clam chowder, and grilled ono. My favorites were the fish tacos and fries. I would not recommend the clam chowder because it was super salty. I would recommend this place and would go back because of the good food. Get the fish tacos! read more

Without a doubt, one of the standout meals of our week in Maui was at this cafe. We enjoyed coconut shrimp so much that we ordered it twice, and the green salad with grilled mahi mahi, Cajun topping, and pineapple balsamic dressing was simply amazing. The fish tacos were overrated. I personally did not like. The cafe, offering both indoor and outdoor seating, is spacious. The restaurant is pretty spacious so social distancing is a thing! They have tables that can accommodate as small as 2-4 up to 10 people, which is great because we were a group of 7! There is outside sitting if anyone prefers, the sun is hot and can be in your eyes but it'd be a great place for a beautiful sunset. The portion size is decent and very reasonable. The plate is full of food and flavor! The price for this place is about average $10-$15 a plate. Family of 4, we order an app and 3 entrees with 3 drinks and a beer, our bill was approximately $75. The fried calamari was delicious! I don't know how to explain it but it was full of calamari and not battering, if that helps and makes sense! & their tarter sauce is AMAZING! Love the fresh dill that's in it! The Kalua pork was delicious as well. It was not dry and had tons of flavor. I'm a sauce person and their sauce made it 10x even better! Shrimp and chips, were our less favorite but it was still good. Nothing wrong w the food, just wasn't our favorite. The shrimp wasn't over fried so it wasn't dry. And it is coconut shrimp so you definitely taste the coconut flakes! The blackened mahi mahi is very good! You can taste the freshness of the fish! I'm glad it did because we are in Maui! Fish was super moist and not a bit dry at all. Even the kids loved it and would rather had that over the coconut shrimp! I wasn't a big fan of the salads but maybe I'm bias because I love my ranch. They are a couple different kinds of fish, large chopped coleslaw kind of thing topped with tomato and mango. Massive portion of the corn tortilla, so it's messy to eat. Seafood isn't really my normal first choice, so when I say awesome , it really is. The restaurant is upstairs. Tables are shaped like upside down surfboards.
