Dinner at our first night in Maui We walked down S Kihei Street and found this restaurant. The restaurant is on the second level at the Kamaole Plaza. It wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon when we walked in... our first dinner in Maui. It got busy after we left. This is a counter service restaurant. Their specialties are fish tacos, fish & chips, and fish "burgers" (fish filet sandwiches). We ordered fish & chips and a cup of seafood chowder. The fish & chips was served with fries, their famous coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. The fish were not your usual cod, we were told the two pieces each were Mahi-Mahi and Ono. Wow! Their fish & chips plate is healthier than at most places because it has a light coating and is not greasy. The cole slaw was made with coconut milk instead of mayo. The Seafood Chowder (New England style chowder with Ono, Mahi-Mahi, clams, garlic, onions and mushrooms) was delicious! The picnic tables were cool and shaped like surfboards. Prices were affordable and the staff happily visit customers' tables, making sure everything has been cooked to their standards. No ocean view but a good place for a quick and easy lunch or dinner. Yummy food, friendly staff. I ordered the fish tacos and a cup of clam chowder. I only finished one taco, and I saved the second one for lunch the next day. I made a point to eat at different local businesses each day on my trip in September. The general feeling is that all the businesses are welcoming to visitors in the aftermath of the Lahaina fires. Great find as I wanted fish for dinner one night and got the mahi mahi. Liked that there was a brown rice option and found the meal very tasty, a little confusion since I was served in a to go box even though dining in, but that was a small slip. Their Menu is super straight forward, and you aren't going to go wrong with any of their fish choices. We had the coconut shrimp and the Mahimahi on a bun, both were fabulous. You order at the cash register and take your number for the table. Food was fresh and amazing. Hubby got the grilled Ahi tuna plate which came with coleslaw, rice and a slice of pineapple. We also got the onion rings. Onion rings were the same as anywhere you go. His fish was freaking phenomenal. I got the salad where you can choose. Ono Ahi or mahi-mahi. I did Ono blackened. My salad was so good with pieces of macadamia on it and mango. I highly recommend coming to this place. Service was an impeccable. There's also artwork on the walls to buy. Located on the south end of Kihei, so good location on the second floor of an outdoor strip mall with ample parking (although the parking spaces themselves are kind of compact). Good service; short wait time for food. Good menu, can't go wrong with any seafood dish like the fish tacos or fish and chips. Food is cooked well and flavored good, however, too much sauce, so the dishes can get messy and liquidity. Nice size portions, so you're getting good value. Great casual spot for lunch or dinner. We've been to the other location on 1279 S Kihei and decided to stop into the Kamaole location this time as it was walkable from our hotel. Food is just as good as we remembered from the other location and this one we think had better ambiance and more seating. Coconut Shrimp is a must with their chili pineapple sauce. The Calamari was breaded perfectly and soft on the inside. The Fish Tacos were loaded with plenty of fish, vegetables and most importantly, flavor! Would recommend either location for anyone in Maui looking for good food in a casual setting. read more

Very good, quick & casual meal- and cheap! We got the fish tacos and the fish and chips. The fish is a blend of Mahi and something else. The tacos were phenomenal and loaded up to the max. My bf loved the coleslaw and the tiger sauce with it. The fish & chips was good. Love that the fries come with vinegar. We got those 2 things for $38 total. Really not bad for a huge meal. The last time I was here was five years ago and I was so happy with my two mails there that I was looking forward to coming back. It was very disappointing to say the least my husband had fish and chips that tasted OK, but it looked like it was pressed fish patties that they bought and took out of cellophane. Last dinner in Maui. Came here at 645pm on a Thursday after watching the sunset over Kamaole beach 2. 10 minute wait in line to place order, as everyone had questions to ask about the proper sauce to add to the type of fish. They have both indoor and outdoor dining, with at least 14 tables outdoors on the top balcony with an roof to protect from rain and sun. The tables resembling a surf board. Temperatures at night in the mid 80s even in early March. Menu posted overhead is already outdated, with prices increasing $2 per item. Wife ordered the $20.49 grilled ahi salad, and I ordered the $16.49 Ono on brown ride. 25 minute wait for food. We had to pickup our food with an electronic pager, and gather our own metal utensils, napkins, taking our food on a plastic tray, with paper plates back to the table. And still they want 18% tip. Quality of food comparable to Paia Fish Market and a few bucks cheaper, if you substitute paper plates for porcelain plates. My Ono was perfectly cooked, about 6 ounces, covered with a delicious wasabi cream sauce to give it more of a spicy flavor. Firm, yet tasty flakes of white fish. Rice didn't have too much flavor, but loved the creamy Cole slaw with cabbage. Wife's grilled ahi salad was huge. She loved the tuna fillet, seared on the outside, and pink on the inside. Came with a huge salad, with lots of raw onions, bell peppers with a light vinaigrette dressing on the side. Wife gave all the raw onions to me. No French kissing tonight! We remembered Coconut's when they had one in Kauai. We were hoping the food here in Maui was just as good, and we weren't disappointed! Friendly people greeted us as we walked in to order. The shrimp tacos are delicious. The order comes with two tacos but the amount of food in each taco could easily make two more! I was stuffed! If I could give this 10 stars I would. Coconuts is always my first stop in Maui when I am visiting my parents. The food is amazing. Nothing on the menu you won't love. I am consistently ordering the calamari, local mahi mahi plate with brown rice and cheese, and the poke app. The staff is all new in the last few months but so far they have been lovely. We picked that place, as it was closed to our Kamaole Sands condo and it had good reviews and the menu looked interesting. Man what a good choice that was. It was a feast! We had 6 different dishes, giving us a good range. Flavorful, fresh, well seasoned, all that in cool classic surf vibe. You order at the counter then you go sit down wait for the food. It took 15 to 20 minutes for the plates to arrive, and it was awesome. Everything was good, but the grilled ahi salad was AMAZING. The pineapple dressing was awesome, the salad fixings were awesome, topped with an incredibly tasty piece of tuna. A come back dish as far as I am concerned. Coconut shrimps were good, but could have been a bit more "coconuty". Fish tacos were HUGE and tasty, i really like the mango salsa. The local grilled ono was great as well. The restaurant is located upstairs in a strip mall. There is plenty of space in this restaurant. If you want to sit inside, you need to show your vax card. The coconut shrimp came out piping hot and was wonderfully complemented with the sweet chili sauce. I had the Passion Orange Aloha maid juice drink and it was sweet and refreshing. The most popular dishes here are #1 fish tacos and #2 fish and chips, then any of the fresh fish plates. We decided to go with the fish tacos and the Ahi Tuna Steak. Hmmm...we finished everything. Surprised we enjoyed Coconuts still. We haven't been back to Maui since the Covid lockdown. The fish and chips are breaded lightly, crisp and fresh. Grilled Mahi on brown rice with fresh tomatoes and fresh salad is a popular healthy entree in our group and everyone seemed very impressed with the salad. Tomatoes were eaten by even our non veggie foodies. ( this is not me) I love veggies so I orders a salad with grilled mahi atop. The mango salad and mahi is so fresh! Good, not great, but good. We had the infamous fish tacos which were so messy that they totally fell apart even with 2 tortillas. While eating them, I went through a gross of napkins and ended up using a fork to eat my tacos. The fish tacos were flavorful and included a yummy mango type salsa topping. My wife had a different dish and it came with their "famous" coleslaw. I tried the coleslaw and am not sure why it was famous since it was slightly above average, nothing more. We went on a Thursday night and it was busy but no line at the counter. I read previous reviews that said they were short staffed but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. After ordering you sit down & they bring your order to you, we did not wait long for our food to come. We ordered the Mahi Mahi on rice it came grilled to perfection on a bed of rice with coleslaw. We also had the shrimp and chips and the coconut shrimp and chips. Both were excellent. The only thing was the chowder was very salty and a little fishy tasting. We were very hungry after a long plane flight & it was great going here not having to wait a long time to order and wait for your food.
