Who knew? Really, who knew that this place was pretty legit? I know now! I've walked by this place tons of times on the way over to the Long Beach Pizza Co. joint, just a few doors down.. I always thought I would only find cheap and greasy Mexican food inside, so didn't bother to try. But one day, the hubby and I said, "Why the hell not?". So, we came, we ate, and we left very happy that we found another fab local Mexican spot. I ordered the Taquitos (which came in very generous portions), and my hubby ordered a wet burrito (that was HUGE). Chips and salsa are tasty, although beware, because the salsa is kinda spicy. Simply put I went here on behest of all you yelpers and I'd have to say that you are all right on the money.... I've never had such good food listening to a website... I'd have to say that I did have the tofu and the mushroom and the nachos but my favorites would have to be the tofu.... aside from the fact that im asian.... truth be told i hate tofu but id eat that taco any day of the week. the mushroom was extremely flavorful but a bit salty in nature for me and the nachos were good but i've had better... sorry Tina D. That restaurant is small... really small... so small they dont have a industrial dishwasher.... just some kid washing things by hand... poor kid. I've come to Coco Renos twice over the past few weeks. The first time I thought it was just okay, and the second time I really liked it. I got the carne asada burrito on my first visit. It was a giant burrito that had good ingredients besides the meat itself. Skirt steak was not used, and was more along the lines of the diced beef that you would find in a stew. I wanted good carne asada, but got some funky beef instead. On my second visit I got the shrimp burrito. It was delicious and made me so glad I gave Coco Reno a second try. It was huge, packed with plenty of shrimp, rice, and beans. The service was excellent both times. It's a small place that can feel cramped with limited seating. However, it makes it easy to track someone down for help. Refills on drinks, chips and salsa came quickly and frequently. I was stuffed both times after eating here. There is also a bar connected to the restaurant that has pool tables. The original reason we came was to play pool, but both times we were way too full to even check it out. After having some not so good Mexican food over the weekend, I was really craving something good to cancel out the bad taste left in my mouth. A friend suggested Cocoreno's as an option, which I was delighted since never having tried it in my 7 years here in the LBC. I am pleased to have a good taste in my mouth. It was occupied with only one or two seating options open when we arrived at 8pm, but my friend tells me that it's typically far more difficult to get in so quickly. Let me tell you that my "Mexican food" tastes don't stray further than a cheese enchilada combo plate, so I can't really attest to much more, and I probably never will either. My enchiladas were great, the rice, good, but the beans... not so much. I felt like they were really bland, to which my friend replied, "Because they're not made with lard." I try to eat relatively healthy, and, when I do actually fall of the wagon, I like it to be well worth my while. So, that means I like my beans made with lard. Oh, and the chips and salsa were great too. Been a long time since I had chips that good. Oh, and I noticed some people checked off that the place doesn't have alcohol... so not true, as indicated by the bar they share space with and the chalk menu full of drink options! read more

I started my trip in So Cal with a healthy Fish Taco and Blue Moon for breakfast....then topped it off with a good 'o beef taco. The fish taco rocked. At first I was a little skeptical with the no so green iceberg lettuce...but the fish inside was super, a fat fillet of fish, not chunks. Cocorenos - Tacos - Mexican Near Me - Long Beach, California

My friend had been ranting about this place so we decided to go there last week. It's located really close to my work so I figured I love Mexican food, it would be great if I were to find somewhere close to my work. We went in the entrance off Broadway and the dining area there is SUPER small, which I guess they have a full bar in the back with TVs but we didn't go in that area. The decor is cheesy and high top table seats were super uncomfortable with these large humps on all four corners of the table which was very intrusive. I ordered a Machaca Burrito no beans x-tra rice thinking I'd get a side of rice. I guess I read the sticky menu wrong because the sides were INSIDE the burrito. So the portions are large and in charge, the burrito was as big as my head which is great, but I wanted quality. The Chicken Tortilla soup was Excellent I must say.. very good! and My friend loved his seasoned Tacos which two decent sized Taco's were under $5. My burrito was not worth $8. My other friends seemed to enjoy their dishes but not like this place is GREAT or amazing. It's okay. There are plenty of other awesome Mexican places. And just b/c it's a whole in the wall joint doesn't mean it lives up to the expectation that the food is bomb regardless of the place. The server was kind of rude. Would feel like we're being intrusive for asking for more chips and salsa or a refill of our beverage. I can already feel the heartburn. I really have mixed feelings about this place. The food is really tasty but I always pay for it later. There has been two times I went there when I actually broke into cold sweats in my sleep. Yet, I continued to eat there. However since my last meal and that brick in my gut feeling 3 days after the fact I think I may stick with the chips and dip or maybe something vegetarian. My BF and I went to a techno party in San Pedro and were starving. We decided to ditch the party and get some grub since we hadn't eat all day. This place is so unauthentically Mexican, it's funny. I would venture a guess that because this place is connected to a bar, they get a constant flow of inebriated customers. I can probably see enjoying this food if I were completely hammered--and maybe that's the point. I've been known to partake in Jack-in-the-Box tacos when good and sloshed (cocoreno tacos also include bright orange cheese), but it doesn't make me proud of myself the next day. Nor did eating here. And that, in itself, is rad. Being no longer limited to mere side salads, the vegan menu boasts an ample selection of authentic mexican food. The mushrooms tacos here are out of this world. I swear. I'm not even vegan and that is always what I order when I go to Coco Reno's. It's tough to enjoy yourself on a crowded weekend night, but this is a great place to go for lunch (especially on the weekend after a day at Veteran's Swap Meet) to enjoy some Cadillac margaritas and mushroom tacos. So I was in this part of the south bay and looking for the mexican food that I can't get at home. Recommended by a family member. Party of three walked in and sat at the bar area (not the bar Reno Room, but the counter in the offshoot Cocrenos.) Attractive waitress went into the bar and got some other person to serve us. He took our order and then went back into the bar where I saw him hand the order to the guy playing pool. He came in to cook it up. On the plus side, he did wash his hands. But can you get a stronger feeling of "Screw you for interrupting me with your patronage?" The chips were good but the accompanying salsa was on par with "fresh" supermarket tub salsa. You know, tomatoes that are definitely preserved in something to keep their form but not necessarily their flavor. So the party had 1 order chicken tacos, 1 order carne assada tacos, 1 order of the tamale special on the board. The Tamales were brought out and put in the microwave (Yeah, I know, lots of places do this) and then served with sauce and lots of yellow cheese. The chicken tacos were utterly flavorless and the Carne Assada had no marinade flavor other than lime. And both were covered with shredded iceberg and mounds of orange and white shredded cheese. (Supermarket Cheddar Jack out of a bag maybe?) The SECOND our plates were in front of us the cook picked up his cue that was leaned up against the wall and headed back to the bar. Props to them for having lots of vegetarian options but this is Belmont Heights so they know their audience. I should have gone in that direction. It might have been tastier. So thanks for the recommendation. You sent me to the most americanized taqueria I've been in for a decade. Looking for a big meal cheap, Cocrenos is fine. Looking for tasty authentic mexican food, anywhere in Long Beach is probably better than this. read more

I'm vegetarian, and came here with two others with no dietary requirements. There were a lot of options for everyone, and prices are very affordable. Had the veggie deluxe burrito which was less than $10 for a very hefty serve --- I couldn't finish it. But it was good and I'd definitely recommend it! read more

I feel the need to update this to say that Coco Renos management contacted my girlfriend later that same day to apologize for the incident and promise to take steps to prevent such occurrences in the future. They put up a "no soliciting" sign and publicly noted their intention to address this kind of thing. They've got a ton of reviews on Yelp, mostly positive, and would have survived our little drop of bad publicity in the ocean of accolades. Disappointing. I ordered blackened shrimp salad which the menu said would be served over mixed greens. Sure. If by mixed you mean tossed shreds of iceberg lettuce. Also, my husband ordered a veggie burrito with tofu and mushrooms. Instead of putting the mushrooms in his burrito, they put them all over my salad, which I then had to pick off and give to him, as I hate mushrooms and nowhere on the menu does it say there are mushrooms in the salad I ordered. The shrimp was definitely not fresh. However, I can live with shrimp out of the freezer if its seasoned and prepared well. Sadly, this shrimp was overcooked and under seasoned. So basically bland rubbery lumps atop my salad. Then, the citrus house dressing had no flavor. I had no joy eating this, and gave up a 3rd of the way in. With a few simple tweaks this salad could have been great and honestly, its not that hard to do a salad. Maybe they were having an off night but based on this experience I can't recommend this place. I heard about this place from a co-worker so I thought I'd give it a shot since I was in the neighborhood. Walked in just after their lunch rush. It is a tiny place with about 6 tables. They brought out some chips and salsa which were okay. The salsa did not have any spice at all but and I had to give it some salt to bring out the flavor. I ordered the shredded-beef taco combo. The beans and rice were both surprisingly good. More authentic tasting then I thought they would be. The tacos were so-so. They were shredded beef and were slathered in sauce. Pretty messy. They were not the greatest tasting tacos I've had but they were not the worst either. Service was great. I never had an empty glass and my waitress came around often to make sure I was happy with the meal. If I am in the area during lunch time I may go back there again but I wold not make a special trip for this place. This little gem is up and down for me, but lately it's up. I was here last night with a friend and we were like, these beans taste a little off, two minutes later we hear the waitress tell somebody the beans have no lard. Ah! No wonder. This is it. This is the best version of "classic" Mexican food in LB. By that, I don't mean "authentic Mexican", I mean "classic" red-sauce, sour cream blob, melted-cheese awesomeness that put this kind of food on the map. Everyone has memories of a wet burrito and a margarita. Being a lifelong Californian/Angelino, it's this food that brings back fond memories - past and present. But anyway, the review... The place itself is super tiny. 4 tables, and a bar. Seats maybe 20? The kitchen is right there, so you get all the sights, sounds, and smells. Its great. The only downside? There's no A/C, so summer dining can be a miserable, sweaty ordeal. But I guess that's why there's cheap beers, right? They offer classic fare: tacos, burritos, specialties, salads, nachos, etc. Nearly everything has a vegetarian option, with mushroom, tofu, and veggies being an option. Their salsa is good and flavorful, and unlike most "table salsa", this one has a slight kick. Service is quick, and they aim to please. I've been to a few places, and this is by far the best Classic Mexican I've had in Long Beach. Only one star was docked thanks to that whole heat issue. read more

I was studying at The Library (coffee shop next door) and decided to get food from here since it was more convenient. WORSE DECISION EVER. I ordered 2 tacos (beef and pork) to go. The tortilla crumbled and fell apart even before I took my first bite. This was within 10 mins of grabbing the to-go bag and sitting back down at the table I was studying at, 2 stores down. The meat was edible but did not stand out in anyway. The only positive thing from this was the free small bag of chips I got with my order. I ate probably 20% of my food and threw it away. Pretty good little Mexican spot attached to Reno Room. It is extremely small and leaves little room during rushes, however they do offer a decent vegetarian selection. I wasn't particularly impressed with the food, but it is attached to a bar after all. I used to like this place a lot better when they still had Dad's root beer and RC Cola on the fountain. Prices are reasonable and they give free chips and salsa. Not worth going out of your way, but you should check it out if you live in the area. read more

This USED to be one of my absolutely favorite haunts. But, lately, I must say the quality has gone downhill. My mahi mahi tacos (traditionally my favorite) were completely cold on the last two visits ... and the size of the little fish stick they threw in there made it hardly worthwhile. I do still enjoy the fresh salsa ... and it often has just the right kick and cilantro flavor. But ... in the end ... If the food's not GREAT ... then why submit yourself to dealing with the burnt oil smell you incur when they overfill that basket and drop the fresh tortillas in until black smoke POURS out ... or waiting outside at the bus stop for one of 4 tables to free up ... it is simply (and frankly) not worth the wait ... and, sadly, NOT AS GOOD as it once was. read more

Dined here for the first time tonight and became slightly disappointed after I found a short black hair in my Al Pastor Burrito :/ I notified the waiter of what had happened and he the offered me to remake my burrito to which I had lost my appetite for so I said no. After I noticed that the cooks were not wearing hairnets or gloves while handling food. Although the cooking area is open and available for the public to see, it was also very disappointing how they didn't have PPE's on. On the bright side, the margarita was delicious and strong. I love their salsa. I dream about their salsa. I drive home from work and my mouth starts to water in anticipation of their salsa. They have great mushroom tacos. The tacos are simple, comprised of a flour tortilla, sauteed mushrooms and their salsa. I always order them a la carte but you can also order them with rice and beans. Coco Renos is one of my favorite Long Beach establishments. I love coming to this little hole in the wall for some delicious enchiladas or fish tacos. It is my neighborhood go to for Mexican food! I love that I can walk there and particularly on a hot day, I love to order their frozen margaritas. The staff is always friendly and prompt. My favorite part however, is that this place attracts both vegetarians, vegans, meat eaters, drinkers, non-drinkers, and pretty much everyone living in Long Beach. Because of that variety in their menu, everyone has a story about coming here, whether it was for a first date or a celebration. It goes beyond being a restaurant into being a symbol of community. The Reno Room is close to my house and I occasionally meet up with friends there for tofu tacos, etc. Let's just get this out of the way first: The salsa is the best in Long Beach and I'm a big fan of the mango margaritas. But don't drink too much of them! I came here on a date once by a guy that asked me out while I was eating on my lunch break. It was a pretty OK 10 minutes into our date until he told me that he recently tried to commit suicide during a pot-induced (that always gets me) epiphany that if he didn't kill himself in that moment, he would try to kill his girlfriend-at-the-time. So he failed at committing suicide and became a born again Christian. He might as well have told me that he eats live babies. I had to drink 4 mango margaritas to get through that date and that was SUCH A BAD IDEA! It's too much sugar! I could barely make it walking home without throwing up! At least I had a good excuse to hurry back to my apartment. So yeah, I love Coco Reno's. read more

Coco Reno's is great! Best chile rellenos in town and as a standard measure I have all the Mexican food places take the relleno test. Also, the complimentary chips and salsa is crucial as well to any respectable Mexican food joint. Although I've been told by one waitress that works there that this isn't real Mexican food because they use jicama in some dishes and they never use lard in any preparation. So I don't know what you call it officially but I call it damn good yummy and healthy Mexican eats! The whole set up of Coco Reno's is perfect as well. It's like an old taco stand and you can watch all the cooks make your food right there. The cooks are excellent and fast and friendly and hustle to get your order done.
