The Coddington Brewery does indeed live up to it's name. The beer selection covered the spectrum. The IPA I ordered was spot on. I was slightly disappointed with my fish & chips entree. The fish portion was just enough to be called an entree. Hey, we are talking scrod or cod, here. Not blue fin tuna! That being said it was fresh and nicely prepared. Decent food (the lobster roll and clam chowder were rock-solid), though more expensive than I'd have expected. The ambiance is not what I expected, either--it's a slick-looking pub microbreweries in the middle of a highway in Middletown. I was looking for a more rugged brewery experience. Came here based on the recommendations from a local we had met earlier in the day. We were told it was "great food and beer". Honestly we were let down. We both ordered the beer cheese burger that was on special that day, and the cheese was so bland and flavorless. That was the only thing on the burger so it was basically a very bland flavorless burger. The curly fries were good but that was the only highlight of the meal. We ordered the pub pretzels as the appetizer, which also came with the same crappy cheese that was no good. We were also given mustard thankfully to eat the pretzels with. Still meh. I ordered a lemon drop which was okay. My friend ordered the winter lager and said it was "meh", liked Samuel Adams winter better. Wouldn't come back. read more

This place is a gem.. our waitress was superb and the food was beyond our expectations! My husband had the blackened chicken alfredo and I devoured the miso salmon. I can't believe how good the crispy spinach was as my side! We enjoyed a flight of beers and the Watermelon was our favorite. Definitely recommend. We have been to this establishment several times. But tonite when we went my husband found two hairs in his salad. We mentioned it to the waitress who later said she tried to get us a free beer with no avail. When the check came I asked to talk to the manager. I politely told the manager (who actually turned out to be the owner ) about the hairs he was apologetic and took the bill and acted like he was going to compensate us some how. He then pulled several coupons cards out of his pocket and instead was going to give us something for future. I asked my husband if he's ever returning and he said not likely. The owner then said "well then there's nothing I can do for you " and put our check back down on the table and walked away. At this point we are STUNNED at his response. We then waited forever to pay and had to walk our check to a waitress who thought the manager /owner had taken care of it. The waitress was fine, she did nothing wrong. The owner however needs to find a better way to run his business. I never asked for a refund of anything but any good restaurant would have surely made amends for HAIR in food. Okay beer and disappointing service. The blueberry ale is fine, but nothing particularly special. We sat at the bar recently and were met with gruffness once they realized we were not going to drink pint after pint of beer. We went as a brewery stop on a birthday trip and requested the smaller size glasses of beer to enjoy which were available. Even though the bartender said the smaller size was available, his friendliness evaporated when we all requested that to order. Lower tab here equates to lower service. I'm not expecting any gasps here...this isn't shocking, it's more just a disappointing low-point of what was a fun trip out to the Newport area. My wife and I went there yesterday for lunch. We had been there twice during the last year and we both liked it. We were seated in a booth, given menus and ....waited. and waited....There were other diners there, but I wouldn't say it was hopping. It was a Tuesday afternoon. After 15 minutes of waiting for ANY type of service, (and both of us trying to get the attention of someone, we decided to give them another 5 minutes. A couple of weeks ago, stopped by for a beer and some dinner, was totally ignored by the new girl at the bar and decided to leave without food. Bar owner (Billy Christie) got angry at me that I hadn't come to him about service issues and told me I wasn't welcome at the restaurant any longer - first time I've been 86'd. This is someone who's been a paying member of his mug club for more than a decade!! Owner was profane and intimated that the reason that I frequently come to his bar solo is that I prefer the company of men - I didn't have the heart to tell him that my girlfriend of 18 months gets sick almost every time she eats at his place. Steer clear of this place unless you like drama, a dull menu, and lax service. Nice job Billy - alienating a customer of 18 years. Went to Coddington after a day at the Newport Mansions. It was earlier this month, so I'm not sure how crowded the place is on a Saturday night during peak season, but when we got there we were able to get a seat easily for a party of five. The bar was packed with college football fans but the restaurant part wasn't overly loud. Got their ESB, which I quite liked although it could have been a little bolder. I can't speak to their other beers, but judging from the reviews, it seems like the ESB might be better than some of their other seasonal brews. Food was decent; nothing to write home about, but perfectly fine for the atmosphere and the price. Four stars for being exactly what I expected.
