Coddington Brewery probably would be a lot more enticing if they were in a different location...so it isn't necessarily the first place you think of going. It has a casual atmosphere, like many other typical breweries. It is cozy and comfortable. The food is subpar, with basic bar food, and nothing really standing out on the menu. Every time I have gone, I have "settled" for chicken fingers, as nothing else is really appealing on the menu. To be honest, the Chicken FIngers are not that great. 3 stars- 1 for convenience, 1 for good service, and 1 for atmosphere.... lacking on the wow factor, and the food. read more

I've been coming to Coddington for 20 years, but have really come to appreciate everything about it recently. Even on busy nights, my husband and I are seated quickly, the waitstaff is exemplary and the food is great. It's high-end comfort food. I always get the seafood which is fresh and filling! A few bonuses: desserts are incredible and we will take to go because we're always so full from our meals. Heck, at least they admitted kids (and sat them a mere 10 feet from the bar too! I would have been kicked out of any California bar in that case! Seriously folks, this is a brewpub. Was really excited to try this place while in Newport. The beers were good, but not what I was expecting. The blueberry beer was ok...but I didn't like the actual blueberries floating in the beer. The IPA did not taste like a typical IPA. I was expecting something more hoppy and less rich. The Hefeweizen was pretty good. Take your grandma here. No, really, take her here, she'll love it. With menu staples such as Chicken Pot Pie, Meatloaf and the Thanksgiving Platter, this is an elderly person's dream come true. It is not, however, my dream come true. I find it really depressing - the space is big and nicely decorated and you can view the beer cauldrons (what are those things really called, anyway?) but it's always so sleepy in there and the whole place has the vibe of a "has-been". Dishes are over priced and lack any real flavor. Since it's Granny's fave, I've tried everything from the calamari salad to the linguine alfredo and always leave feeling like I just wasted calories. Pre-plated "house salads" with dried out carrot slivers and mealy tomatoes are insulting and the barely-warmed-through pizza crust reminds of something I'd microwave for myself after school 15 years ago. They brew their own beer and you can try it for ishes and giggles but I've never tasted one that I'd write home about. One major plus is that I've never had to wait for a table on a Saturday afternoon...because it's always dead. D.E.A.D. and they have pool tables and TV's to catch "the game". read more

Prices were fair for the food although the canned lobster bisque and frozen Tyson chicken tenders were nothing to write home about. I was very happy with the service. The waitress we had was very kind and sincere and service was prompt. The beer, however, was garbage which brought Coddington's score from a 3 to a 1.5 ( rounded up). I've tasted better IPAs from first time homebrewers and the pumpkin ale was a complete joke. If this place had a solid beer offering to back up its mediocre (at best) food I think it would be pretty successful. However, $5 for a 12oz glass of that horrible beer was borderline highway robbery. If this place improved it's beer offering I would consider revisiting. I think this place would be a great candidate for Gordan Ramsey's "Kitchen Nightmares" or Robert Irvine's "Restaurant Impossible." read more

Every time we come here the hostess' has no clue how to combine tables, seats large parties at tiny tables with no room for drinks or food, or the waitresses have too many tables and do not refill drinks or clear empty plates. It makes eating here unpleasant. The food may be great but when you aren't comfortable at your table you choose to go other places next time. read more

After a long day of meetings, a coworker and I took the advice of some locals and took a seat at the bar here. We got there before the dinner crowd, so it was fairly quiet and the servers were very attentive. I was only going to get a beer, but I ended up also deciding on a caesar salad. Both were very good pub fare! The beer was one of their specials for the day and was raspberry-flavored (can't remember the exact name) and the caesar salad was huge, but delicious. My coworker got the beer sampler and we both enjoyed getting the descriptions of all the different flavors. Next time I'm in the area, I would definitely come back here to relax and watch some sports! read more

The most common phrase you hear in a review for a brew pub is "great beer, average food". That certainly applies here, but that's not a problem for me. I love a good beer and we both really liked the ones we tried. I went with the hefeweizen and she went with the watermelon. The food wasn't anything spectacular, but the food at a typical brew pub (burgers, wings, nachos, etc.) is one of my favorite types of cuisines. A plate of average wings still beats out a plate of perfectly executed vegetables. The prices seemed to be a tick above average. $9 for buffalo wings, $8 for a salad, and $16 for chicken parmesan certainly isn't outrageous, but it is a dollar or two more than I'd want to pay at a pub. I suppose that can be attributed to being located so close to Newport. It's conveniently located not far from the highway and away from the beaches and tourists so it's not a bad place to go to start your day on the island if, like we did, you got a late start and don't arrive until lunch. I'll find my way back there at some point. At the very least I'd like to try a couple more of their beers. read more

This is but one of a very few legitimate brew pubs in Rhode Island and a pretty decent one at that. The selection and quality of their beers is definitely up there, and they switch up the seasonal selections as would be expected. The food does take second place to the beer, though. In the couple of times i've been there, I've been more focused on my beverage. I think the only thing holding this place back might be the location. Its' on a somewhat desolate stretch of Coddington Highway, and it feels like you're going to a remote roadhouse. Not necessarily a complaint, and once inside, though, the people are friendly, and they have growlers to go for the long drive home. read more

Really nice bar to hang out and play some pool while tasting microbrews. We each got the sampler, which was more than generous (our designated driver had to hold off about 3/4 of the way through). This place is great. It's much more of a brew-pub since it has the full restaurant. The beer sampler is crazy! Seven samples that are each 7-oz each will sneak up on you, especially if you drink them within an hour (that's the equivalent of over 4 beers). I highly advise getting food along with the sampler. In addition to the sampler, we started with buffalo chicken dip. It was served hot with chips, carrots and celery. Nothing out of the ordinary about the dip but it was very tasty. I had the Ahi Tuna Steak while my husband had Tex Mex Burger. The tuna was perfectly seared and the wasabi mayo was delicious. The bite I got of the Tex Mex burger was very good, a great mix of flavors. Friendly staff and good service. read more

Coddington is good for get-togethers once in a while. I usually go here for lunches and work-related functions. The beers offered are a standard brewpub selection (golden ales, IPAs, stouts, reds, etc.) My favorite dish is the William Coddington Turkey Platter, a cafeteria-like plate of turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. Not to mention its easy to get to, has plenty of parking, reliable service, and is great for all kinds of patrons including families/groups. Located nearby the Newport/Middletown town line, Coddington is a bit off the usual path for diners. So easy to navigate to, and there is plenty of free parking. The right side of the building houses a large bar along with a few high top tables and booths. There is also a pool table. The other side is dedicated to table service including several booths. There are plenty of TV's are around the restaurant, even on the table service side.. easy to catch a game. Coddington is a favorite for lunch with my coworkers, as they have something for everybody. Nothing particularly out of this world, but definitely consistently delicious above average pub food. Lots of appetizers, including Ultimate Nachos which are my favorite. The salads here are huge & very tasty. The menu continues on with plenty of choices: Burgers (the cheeseburger club is amazing!), sandwiches, pizza, seafood, and big plate entrees. There is always a "specials" menu as well. I happen to adore the Buffalo Chicken wrap which comes with shredded carrots and house made blue cheese dressing. I think the beer options here are better than Newport Storm. I wait all year for the Watermelon hefeweizen in the summer. I love the presentation of the fruit infused beers.. your blueberry blonde will have fresh blueberries floating in the glass, and you will get a fresh slice of watermelon on your hefeweizen. I stopped into the Coddington Brewery Monday night after a brutal 6 hour drive up to Newport. I wanted to grab a burger and beer before heading to the hotel and since it was on the way I figured I'd give it a try. I went in and grabbed a seat at the bar. Both bartenders were very friendly and talkative. In no time I had one of their Stout's in front of me and burger on the way. The stout was pretty good, very smooth, maybe a little too bitter, but that's splitting hairs. The burger was a decent size, well cooked and pretty flavorful. I'd definitely get it again without hesitation. All told, it was a good experience and I'll definitely be seen sitting at the bar there again in the future. read more

Stopped in here after the Newport Storm tour & it totally hit the spot. While there were quite a few people there, there were open seats at the bar. We ordered the sampler of beers, which is a good deal at 7 beers at 7oz for $12.75. They place each of the beers on their special placemat, which is helpful to identify which beer is which. I'd have to say that I really enjoyed 4 out of the 7, but a couple of them just didn't suit me. The food was pretty good, too. Hubby had the tex-mex burger, friend had the brewer's blue burger & I got the roast beast with a super delicious horseradish sauce. While in town for the Newport Folk Festival, we ate here twice. The first time we ate here because it was close to our hotel. The second time it was because it was one of the few places open later after the festival. I enjoyed the beers. My wife and I both ordered flights. I appreciate the progressive thinking by their offerings of Watermelon and Blueberry beers. I know these have been done before by other breweries but most locales don't have the stones to try something like this. The food is ok for me. I was a little disappointed in the lobster dishes. Not really impressed as a first timer. I expected more. I had: Irish Stout (5 stars): Dark and full bodied with a distinct coffee-like aroma. This Stout has a rich dark malt flavor with an acidic and dry-roasted bitterness in the finish. Deep ruby to black in color with a creamy head. Similar to a Guinness just lighter. Tex Mex Burger (1 star) : A Hereford burger topped with spicy chili, red onion, monterey jack and cheddar cheese. This burger is definitely spicy. I enjoyed the spiciness. Unfortunately the chili was real bland which offset the whole burger. The waitress acted like something had crawled up her ass and died. She didn't even crack a smile the whole time and seemed to hate her job. Overall I want to give them another chance. I rather go back and try their different beers. After all they are a brewing company. Maybe they should just stick to that. read more

Stopped in on St. Pats, as I was looking for a good dark beer and some corned beef. I sat at the bar, was promptly greeted, and poured a pint of their local stout. Beer was a 4.5/5. Good taste, great aroma, and well poured. I ordered the corned beef sandwich, no kraut, extra dressing. All aspects were met, but still a little light on the dressing. The meat was very moist, not over done and dried out. The bread was perfectly grilled. Overall, it was a great meal, friendly atmosphere, and good brew. read more

Decided to give this place 1 last try after 3 different visit throughout the 3 years we were here. Every single time it was a HUGE disappointment, the wait staff is extremely rude and seem lazy. Also don't come here if you have children under the age of 5 because they are not a family friendly establishment, it should state that on the door. The food isn't great and we've actually been served flat beer. When asked to have a different beer because it was flat, they never even brought our order back. There's better places on the island that offer great food with better prices and way better service! DON'T EAT HERE... ALSO FYI they can't take constructive criticism about their establishment and will call the military base to cry and complain about what is being said about them. If you are staying in Newport and need to escape the crowds and padding to most menu pricing, come to this place. A spoiled NY foodie, I actually was completely surprised with how good it was. For summertime the Watermelon Ale is a winner, and I actually went for the blend with Woodchuck cider for an even more refreshing drink. My boyfriend got a stuffed lobster that was extremely tasty and very reasonably priced. I had the lobster roll which was DELICIOUS - and I am very picky about these! I frequent the North Fork of LI where these are extremely yummy! The service was great, and the quality and portion size of the food was very desirable. My cousin and his wife were with us and for an app we shared the hot crab dip which was delicious and great for sharing. We have been here four times. The first time was decent, the food wasn't great but I enjoyed being out of the house. The second time we had reservations and had to wait 20 minutes standing in a walkway for our table to be ready. The third time I brought my parents and my godparents and the service was not wonderful at all, they served burnt/charred broccoli to my two-year-old, and when I asked if I could have some soft broccoli that she could chew, I was told that is how it is served and there is nothing wrong with it. I was extremely embarrassed because I had suggested our dining there and the service was embarrassing, I really had wanted to impress my family and that completely backfired. One of my godparents orders were completely wrong and it honestly felt like we were at Denny's or Waffle House. The fourth and last time I attended a date night with my husband. We had a pub table, the bar food was OK, but it took forever, literally forever to have drinks refilled and to have our order placed. This is such a cute little area and this company has such an opportunity to grow and serve its customers, yet I feel that they have no desire to. All three times the service was substandard or downright rude. 1) Don't scowl at your customers. 2) Don't act like you're doing the customers a favor. You're cooks/servers. Own it. 3) Don't deliver the food and ignore your table for the next 25 min until I had to get up and ask you for a check. There are a lot other options in the Newport/Middletown area.
