My friend and I decided to stop in to HallPass for dinner before a comedy show at WiseGuys. We were walking around looking at the different options when we saw a trail of the codspeed logos guiding us to the counter. I think the name and branding is so cute and clever. We were both SUPER excited by the menu. I love a lobster roll, and my friend thought the cod Stewart looked really good. While we were ordering, we saw someone else's calamari come out. We both immediately looked at one another as to say "that looked good let's try it," so we added that to the order as well! We also got some drinks and added tartar sauce to the order. HallPass is a food haul, and they have soda machines throughout the business. The Diet Coke brew is good. They text you when the food is ready, and for us, it took about 10-15 minutes. Once we started eating, my friend and I were both a little underwhelmed. The calamari itself wasn't that great, but the friend veggies that came with it were delicious. Not really worth the price point being that the veggies were the star of the calamari dish. My friend thought the cod Stewart was okay. Not bad but just bland. The tartar sauce was good and helpful. As for my lobster roll, it was delicious since it is lobster, bread, and butter, but it wasn't anything special compared to others I've had. The fries were good but not as hot as I would've liked. Overall, this place is good but does feel like you're paying for the location and vibes more than for the quality of the meal. I love that this restaurant has stood the test of time at Hall Pass. So often, local shops struggle, but these guys are hanging on! (I actually have no idea how stable the business is, I just notice that it's been around for a while and I'd like to celebrate that.) I prefer my food pretty simple (plain) without a lot of toppings or sauces and they were wonderful to make my sandwich just the way I wanted. The fries were fine-nothing outstanding, but they tasted good. Really meaty and well seasoned lobster rolls! If you're heading to the HallPass food court, Colossal Lobster is a great spot to check out while you're inside. I hit up a few spots while I was in the food hall, and this was by far my favorite one. They've got a decent looking menu with some seafood favorites like clam chowder, fish, and oysters. But while you're here, you should def be getting that lobster roll. For the price, they provide a nice meaty roll. I went with the Connecticut Roll and it was nicely seasoned and buttery. The roll itself wasn't as buttery as I would have liked, but it was soft and toasty. Service at the counter wasn't the friendliest but they're efficient. You order at the counter and pick your food up when you're ready. Depending on when you come, seating is pretty easy to find in the food hall. Really good and inexpensive Lobster rolls comparatively to what other places charge. Calamari and tater tots were a hit. My family really enjoyed them. One big plus is that it is open late!!! Thank you! Thank you! Everyone who goes to events, performances, symphonies, knows it's near impossible to get downtown in traffic just to make these events, let alone have time to eat beforehand. Salt Lake really is limited in choices that are open late, that are not a 21+. I wish more restaurants understood this. A Symphony gets out at 9:30 PM and almost everything closes at 10 PM. It really is difficult. Anyway, the atmosphere was a little loud but it was a fun environment. It's in Hall Pass at the Gateway so of course there's a lot going on in there. They serve a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich that always catches my eye. Alas, I always end up right back at Colossal Lobster ordering a Cod Stewart Sandwich or 3-piece Fish with fries or tots, depending on my mood. I am a fan of chowder bread bowls. Their chowder bread bowl was pretty tasty and I really enjoyed the bread. Their lobster rolls are tiny and would not survive in a Los Angeles eatery. They're just too tiny although they are seasoned very nicely. Lots of people said their lobster rolls were huge and that they were so meaty. They were not. The portions are tiny but the bread bowl was pretty substantial. I walked through the food hall to check out a number of the other spots but a few of them didn't have anyone there to open them up. Get out of here with that nonsense, they need to pay ME a tip! Anyhow, there are tons of things I hated about Colossal Lobster. First, the rolls weren't traditional in any sense of the word. Each sandwich had weird spices sprinkled on top that don't belong on lobster rolls. I'm guessing the spices were an attempt to mask the not-so-great lobster meat. Second, the price is ridiculous ($18 each), especially since the rolls barely have any meat in them! Go to their website and look at the menu photos. You get maybe a third of what is pictured. I haven't tried anything besides the spicy tuna tacos (which I believe were just the special of the week) but I imagine that the tacos are very similar to their ahi poke nachos (which is what I originally wanted to get but they were sold out)! The tacos consist of tuna, an avocado whipped cream, sriracha/spicy Mayo, their special sauce, and micro greens. The taco itself is made of a fried wonton wrapper. It was DELICIOUS. I would happily order these again and again. It took about 6 ish minutes to get our order after paying, which is pretty quick given that Hall Pass was packed! SLC did not disappoint by showing me a place that was less than five minutes from my hotel AND offered Uber Eats delivery. What's even better is that with their Uber Eats prices, the lobster rolls are marked up $2 each but everything else is priced same as dine in! I ordered one Connecticut (butter and lobster) and one Maine (Mayo, celery, and lobster) roll ($17 each), an order of the garlic Parmesan tots ($3), and a regular clam chowder ($5). After placing my order, it arrived in less than 30 minutes and was very hot and fresh. The rolls come in the traditional split top buns (people who have not had a traditional lobster roll before think it's just a hot dog bun but it's not!) and while length-wise they may seem small, they are quite deep and hold a nice amount of lobster, especially at this price. They were fresh and had no fishy taste or odor whatsoever. The tots are heavily coated in garlic and Parmesan so avoid them if you're not a fan of either. The clam chowder was filled with huge chunks of clam and had a nice rich flavor. A big bonus is that their containers and disposable silverware are all recyclable or compostable! However, if you are really hungry, they have sides like fries, and clam chowder that you could add to your order.
