I had the pleasure of having lunch here while on a day tour of La Jolla. This place was absolutely amazing and I'd highly recommend to all. The Cody's burger was one of the best burgers I've had in my life (no exaggeration) and was cooked to perfection. To drink I had the blackberry sage-spritzer and it was perfectly refreshing. Nice place with contemporary decor. Servers were very friendly and food came fast. Kids ordered the Li'l Fish & Chips and Chicken Strips. Very satisfied with the big chunks of fresh local cod fish. (Not the usual cheap Tilapia served in other restaurants) The Tartare Sauce accompanying the fish tasted like it was freshly made. The server later confirmed that their sauces were indeed custom-made in house. However, the Kid's Chicken Strips were cut to thinly so it turned out dry and hard. Wasn't very hungry today so I ordered a Fried Calamari appetizer and we all enjoyed it. The calamari was juicy and succulent and the batter coating was of the perfect thickness and texture. And the spicy mayo sauce was another winner! The Lobster Roll was obviously the restaurant's signature dish as I observed many patrons ordering it. We stopped in for a drink on a Sunday and were so amazed by the fish taco appy we decided to try the brussel sprouts and what the heck we called it dinner with the cheeseburger and prawn Caesar. This review of Cody's may be bitter since I didn't order anything "brunch-y". I had to order the fruit salad. The fruit was fresh, the granola was crunchy and the yogurt was packaged. What else can I comment on? Let's just say, if you're a vegetarian, there aren't many options available. As for the pomergrante mimosas, they were delicious and were constantly getting topped off. Was around the La Jolla Cove area on an early Sunday morning and came to Cody's looking for some food to start the day. They open for breakfast and lunch every day at 8 am and have great seating that overlooks Girad Ave. in downtown La Jolla. Inside the restaurant they have a dining area with tables and an open layout allowing for larger parties. They have a small simple menu providing a bit of early morning options along with later afternoon stuff like sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. Their drink options include juices, espresso drinks and their own Kona blend of coffee which is actually pretty good. The griddled parts of the bread were firm and crispy but once you bit into it you get the soft sweet taste of cinnamon and sugar. The crunchy walnuts on top added great texture to it by giving it a crunch. I personally don't really care for strawberries, so I removed them but my friend who enjoyed them said they were fresh. The toast was sweet enough for me without having to add too much syrup to it, but like everything else here the syrup was the real stuff none of that log cabin non sense. Unusual ingredients do not a special meal make. My omelet had hickory-smoked bacon, and New York White Cheddar, as well as avocado in it. But even with these fine constituents, it was pretty boring. I couldn't taste the hickory smoke flavor in the bacon, nor could I taste much difference between the special white cheddar and a regular yellow cheddar (and yes, this is coming from a person who loves cheese and knows the difference). So they put this restaurant in the most expensive part of town, put a fancy website together, threw in some fancy ingredients, and let the local rich folk flock to the "special" restaurant. Be my guest. I'm going to go and get the same quality of food for a lot less at someplace else down the road. What IS worth paying for is the nice ocean breeze and the view, if you choose to sit outside. That was truly wonderful. Also, the service for our (very alcohol-inclined) group was outstanding. The pomegranate mimosas definitely were a hit, and our waiter kept the bottles coming, while still keeping up with the food orders and clearing out the empty plates. Will I come back? Probably not. Fantastic cafe with a great outdoor seating area that has a nice view of the ocean. They serve breakfast all day and I love me some breakfast food! I went with their Awesome French Toast with mascarpone honey butter, candied walnuts, and fresh strawberries. My bf chose from their lunch menu: a veggie burger with a side of crispy onion rings and a grilled salmon salad. The french toast was good, but not the best. The presentation was nice and it did fill me up! They make their french toast with challah bread. My bf enjoyed both entrees a lot. I got a bite of his salmon. It was super moist with a nice crunchy exterior. The onion rings were super crispy and nicely browned. I hate soggy onion rings, but these were great! They looked like they were flash fried. By this point, I had totally pigged out so I didn't try any of his veggie burger. It looked good though. Parking is a pain in the arse, especially on the weekends. Seems like this place is always crowded, but since it was just the two of us we got seated within 5 mins. It would definitely be harder to grab a table if you had a big party. The hostess was gracious and super friendly. She was bombarded with customers, but she kept her cool. The waitstaff was also very professional and accommodating. As part of our bridal party hunt for the best places in La Jolla and our experience was sub par. We got there fairly earlier than the general weekend crowd, before 11, and were seated within minutes. Once stayed we were greeted by our waiter and then left to our own devices for almost 25 minutes. Granted we were waiting for one member of our pay in the interim but we did want to place an order about 15 minutes in. The food is decent, general list of breakfast and lunch dishes with a twist. I had the breakfast salad which was good but a bit confusing since instead of biting into an egg I scoffed up a hearty piece of soft cheese. The rest of our dishes, French toast, today, bacon and potatoes, were ok. Nothing particularly special. Person peeve: San Diego you'd expect 60/70 degree weather. It rained 3/4 days of my trip so Cody's wasn't prepared. I had a huge splash of rainwater fall on my lap and head. Luckily this didn't happen while eating but keep this in mind if it rains, odds are the establishment didn't close the umbrellas before it reasons. read more

Nice Breakfast, brunch restaurant with a REALLY good location for people watching and soaking up the sun in beautiful La Jolla. The menu options are pretty diverse here and the clientele is a mix of touristas, younger locals, families and older local folks. Best seats to snag for the aforementioned people watching are one of the outdoor patio seats either facing Coast or Girard Ave. The weather in La Jolla is fantastic 90% of the time so outdoor seats should always be the first choice but for those of us whose blood has been thinned by living in So Cal or Arizona too long, there are plenty of heaters for cooler evenings or overcast (foggy) mornings. I opted for a Veggie hash for my breakfast and my friend ordered an Omelette. Both dishes were very good and taking a look around at the other diners it seemed like they liked their dishes as well. Service could be a little faster at times but you know what....it doesn't matter if it takes 5 extra minutes for your food to arrive. Why do you ask? I'm not sure if I really understand the bolstering claims being made about Cody's location having a 5-star view. I did catch a glimse of some ocean, but a clear view of the cove? Hardly. We searched behind the counters, as patience is one of our lesser practiced virtues, and found our greeter who welcomed us with the freedom to go choose our own seats. The service we were given the whole morning wasn't bad: we had friendly check-ups and enough coffee-pours, but all of it seemed to scream "I'm being paid to be nice." I have no proof, though. Just my intuition, which is always right. Haha, I kid. The dishes that found their way to our table were the Awesome French Toast, Maple Nut Granola, and the Wild Forest Mushroom Omelet. We only had to wait about ten minutes for our food, and none of it was bad: it was definitely more than edible, and if I said otherwise, my cleanly-wiped plate could be used against me. But being objective, though pretty-good, all of it fell short of amazing, and, in my opinion, it wasn't worth the price. Huge pro, though: No lines for wait. At its outset, Cody's is the restaurant of my girly, hipster-bourgeois dreams. It's right atop a hill overlooking the water. There's plenty of outdoor seating (with comfortable pillows, huge umbrellas and long benches) and since we're in San Diego, it's always going to be warm, breezy, and the perfect weather for outdoor dining. Their drinks are served in cute mason jars. There are adorable little boxed succulents on the table. Their menu highlights breakfast and brunch (everyone's favorite meal, or it should be) and contains things like chicken and biscuits, a crab benedict, and about 7-10 other equally delicious sounding items. I came here with some girlfriends and the four of us ordered a decent sampling of their offerings: the blue crab eggs benedict, a veggie hash, the chicken and biscuits, their veggie burger, a side of fries, a side of grits, and a variety of their mason jar drinks. The crab in the benedict was not that succulent or sweet, but it wasn't crab season at the time, to be fair. The real issue was that everything, and I mean seriously everything (well, except the drinks), was incredibly bland and severely under-seasoned. I think we almost used up all of the salt in the little bowl that was provided for us, and we definitely had to request a second bottle of hot sauce, which we drowned all our food in, after generously coating everything in salt. Ketchup made a frequent guest appearance, as well. Even then, after all that, everything was just okay at best. Edible, definitely. But frustratingly mediocre in its lack of any discernible flavor. Another minor gripe I had was that the chicken in the chicken and waffles was this panko-crusted cutlet of dry (tasteless, in case you forgot) breast meat, and I was hoping for actual chicken on the bone. But, this is just a personal preference. Not a huge waste, as the scenery, ambiance, and service were all pleasant, and I was in good company. But, in a town like San Diego with so many other better offerings available, my wallet and I won't be back. read more

Normally that would scare most restaurants but they had no problem. The food came extremely fast and was delicious. My wife and I split the crab cakes Benedict and roasted potatoes based on reviews here. It was perfect. The crab cake was excellent. Sauce was very good. Rich, as you would expect from a Benedict. Our kids had the French toast and the burger. We were shocked our 5 year old ate half the French toast and half the burger. She usually never eats that much. HMMM, quite interesting... I wrote a long and detailed review of my experience at this restaurant. (The visit was a few months back). It was published and just noticed it has "disappeared". The prices were high for the quality of food and quantity. The service was HORRIBLE. I will not go into detail again to see what happens to the review. The calamari was VERY thick and tough and rubbery, no tentacles unfortunately. The salad greens were not fresh. Chicken sandwich was ok, but not juicy. But one of the truly worst server attitudes I have ever seen. It was such an ordeal for the waitress to know what the soup of the day was when I asked. This is your job, how could it be so difficult?!? She was EXTREMELY disrespectful attitude to a young family at an adjacent table, (they were not from this country, Europe for sure, possibly Germany). They had a toddler and asked quite a few questions about the menu and she made it seem it was a burden to answer their questions. She was very short with them when they asked about the orange juice, whether it was fresh squeezed vs a bottle or carton for their child. I really could not believe the horrible service. If you have a SYNERGY gift card (aka Costco restaurant gift card) do NOT come here because they no longer honor them! First off, if you're no longer honoring the card why isn't there a sign created so patrons can see this when they come into the restaurant? Not everyone is going to pull out their card and ask "hey do you take this?!" What was even more disappointing is I complained to the manager explaining that I came here not expecting to pay for my meal and to use my gift card (obviously if our meals were more than the gift card amount that wouldn't have been an issue, the problem was I came paying for more than what I expected given the gift card is the only reason I came here).. and he did nothing to address my complaint but just apologized for the inconvenience. He attempted to call the company right away but he did nothing to address my concern.. as I stood there staring at him. He didn't address my concern at all, or even mention other avenues the restaurant would explore to ensure this doesn't happen to others. Don't tell me that Cody's has been under new ownership for the past 6-8+ months. In fact, if it's been under new ownership for so long then why isn't there a sign outside that says they no longer accept these cards? ..Sadly because of my experience with management (albeit this place is actually pretty good) - I would NOT recommend them to anyone! read more
