I've never been disappointed by Coffee Underground. The coffee, food, and service has always been top notch every time we go. After the show at the adjacent Alchemy Theatre, we decided to get coffee and share a dessert. They were busy, but we were waited on fairly quickly in the "Red Room", which is a quiet little enclave in the back. My café au lait and hubby's latte were perfect, and the tiramisu was delicious. If there was a 4.5 star option I would definitely do that, mainly because the Coffee Underground of 20 years ago when I was a kid looks the exact same as the Coffee Underground of today. That is not necessarily a bad thing because it is by far the best coffee spot in Greenville, but some of their issues could have been addressed during that time. Seating can be impossible if you are there during a popular time, which hasn't changed really at all over the years. One other suggestion - beer! They could really up the quality of this place with some craft beer. With that said, I'll repeat: Coffee Underground is the best coffee place in Greenville. The coffee itself isn't out of this world, but the atmosphere is the real winner here. Comfy seating, it's under ground (believe it or not), and the snacks are delicious. They sometimes have a cheesecake muffin thing that will make you pass out. Come here to see locals and enjoy the peace of this great place read more

Great desert and coffee. A good environment to relax or hang out with friends in. They offer comedy in a separate room for extra charge. I believe it was around $10 a person though I did not attend. Prices were fair but expect to pay a little more than your average coffee shop. But it was definitely worth it. Losing a star only because some of the seating is super tight. It was not a big deal. I just could hear the people sitting at the table next to me better than I could hear the person I came with. Still an awesome experience. The tight seating may not even be as obvious to others as it was to me. read more

I felt hugely awful Saturday morning after some friends' wedding rehearsal dinner and shindig. I'm sure you can guess why . . . After a couple hours of failing to fall back asleep, I harkened my friend to embarked upon an expedition for coffee and sustenance. Then like a scene out of an 80's cult classic movie . . . fluffy little bubbles seemed to disperse and float out from around the corner. And like that, somehow I knew I was going to okay after all. Okay, that's not really true, but I digress. Coffee Underground is literally underground, so the bubble ploy is a clever and cute beckoning call. It is more or less what you would expect from a coffee shop, couches, coffee tables, tables and chairs of varying configurations and sizes. It was actually pretty crowded on this particular Saturday morning, but we were able to place our order with the counter before it the masses of families started streaming in. I was fully prepared to simply order a bagel and a cup of joe, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this place has a pretty hella extensive menu. I opted for a fruit smoothie, tofu wrap (sans rice, it has butter in it), and the black bean salad. Hungover me was feeling delusionally ambitious about my hunger level, as always. I voraciously sipped down the smoothie, despite it being a little too goshdarn syrupy, smoothie headache resulted, exacerbating my condition, d'oh! The wrap contained a hefty dose of tofu and salad greens, although it was rather soggy - I assume the rice usually serves to absorb some of the running peanut sauce. The black bean salad wasn't anything complex or memorable. Not that remarkable tastiness actually matted at this point, nor would have it been appreciated. However, the staff was extremely pleasant and efficient and that's all I can really hope for on most mornings like this one. I had aspirations to fill my belly and crawl back into bed and Coffee Underground assisted in the implementation of my goals, therefore I am grateful for it, bubbles and all. read more

My go to spot here in Greenville. A great place to relax, free wi-fi, comedy shows on the weekend, and great coffee and food. This place is so inviting, a great place to hang out with friends, and I come here over and over again. Things I order: Strawberry Cake: Tastes like pure strawberry fruit! (Not that artificial crap) with an amazing buttercream frosting! Carrot Cake: This is the best carrot cake ever! It will turn non any non carrot cake lover! It's so creamy, balanced, moist, and perfect. Tofu Wrap: You would think this would be mediocre or bland, but no. This wrap is anything but! They marinate the tofu in this sesame soy type marinade and the tofu soaks it up, and then it comes with this warm seasoned brown rice, wrapped in a huge tortilla. Yum. I love meat, but this wrap is a must try! Burger & Fries: You can't go wrong. Classic burger done right. You also can't go wrong with any of the lattes or coffees. read more

Coffee Underground feels like the Dive Bar of Coffee Shops. My visit was on a bright, sunny, and 90 degree afternoon, but once the door closed I could have been hiding out from a snow storm. I'm not the fanciest guy, but my Iced Black Drip Coffee was tasty and not watered down. Price was nice too. I would definitely come back when looking for a cozy place to chat or work. At a coffee shop? It makes sense now! It's busy and they have servers. Which ours was the best! Duh! I adore this place! I had the peanut butter latte! Yummy! Great coffee. The food was good. Wraps are very good. Falafel wrap beats anything Pomegranate has to offer.

My first impression here is that the place must be a popular, hip and familiar hangout place for the locals. It reminds me of the coffee hangout I'd always go to with friends during college. I didn't care at all about how dirty or clean the place was or how old, rundown, and mismatched the furniture was. It was just me, my friends, good food, good coffee and good desserts. With that said, I am not a local, and I'm only able to experience the place during a busy Saturday afternoon. I am not impressed. There are furniture propped up on upside down plant pots. Talk about tacky. A lot of the furniture had holes or rips. There are icing stains on the sofas. It's self-bus, which is cool and all but that doesn't mean the staff shouldn't come around and wipe down the tables at least once. I got the strawberry cake. Tastes like a cake I'd buy from Safeway. Way too sweet. Coffee was good. I was able to try the pumpkin spice and coco-nutty. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The foam art on my latte looked like someone's buttcheeks, though. If the intent had been to draw me foam buttcheeks I would have given high praise but that was one ugly heart. Overall: Great coffee, but terrible execution (from the decor to the dirt to the lack of presentation towards what they're serving). read more

So I made a return trip recently and I'm still as thrilled with this place. This time around, I tried out the Frog Latte and a Caramel Latte with Coconut . Both were made well and had great flavor. I like that the barista didn't even bat an eyelash when I asked for a modification to the Caramel Latte. It was whipped up without so much as a second thought and delivered with a smile. They both packed enough caffeine to make me hang from the pipes running along the ceiling, but at least you get what you pay for! We dove into the turtle cheesecake as well and that only deepened our sugar-enacted coma. It was completely worth it, though. The eclectic assortment of furniture and chairs adds some charm to the place, though I'm partial to anywhere that I can kick up my feet and relax without ridicule from other patrons. Sadly with two visits now under my belt, I can still only review the coffee and the peanut butter pie. But ohhhh the coffee! Snow Fox Latte! Enough said! The ambiance is nicely defined by it's name as a basement coffee house. The peanut butter pie was good. Not homemade, but still good. The Snow Fox Latte was to die for and Jazzy said her Coconutty was awesome too. The tables and the restroom could have certianly been cleaner. All in all, a wonderful Java experience in a cool little basement coffee house. I hope to try the breakfast soon which is said to be impressive. Cozy cavern coffee. See what I did there? It's dark yet inviting, brick yet warm, filled with coffee scents and pastries. They offer real food and several local beers on draft too! There's a friendly staff ready to answer my questions and a tons of couches and seating options with several hidden passages with more cozy nooks to sit. The live plants and dim lighting add a special vibe. The prices are competitive, $2-4 coffees $5 beers. Definitely a classic, downtown Greenville staple to relax with a book or work on a project. read more

So I saw the sign for this place while I was walking back from dinner yesterday. It seemed like a better option than the hotel Starbucks, so I tried it this morning. It's a neat little basement space, with tables, comfy chairs and couches, and music. Barista was pleasant. However, and this cost them a star in the rating, it took about 10 minutes to get my English muffin-egg-cheese sandwich. It wasn't very busy, and I realize it was made fresh, but this is breakfast time, not coffeehouse relax time. They knew my order was to go, and people have deadlines to get to work. So anyway, that was my rant. Now the sandwich itself was tasty. It was a simple order, but the English muffin was toasted just right, the scrambled egg was fluffy and moist, and the cheese was good and melty. I also got a salted caramel latte. Riding the trendiness, I guess. It had a good, smooth flavor, pretty standard. One thing I liked was that while it had some caramel flavor, it was not overly sweet. read more

I'm not sure how I should rate this place. I wanted to love it.. the ambiance was great. I had strep throat, so I didn't have any coffee - just green tea. I went for brunch last Sunday while I was in town for the weekend and my primary gripe is just about the service. The place was maybe only half full (in the dining area/red room) and I was there alone so it wasn't like I was at a large table.... but the service was SOOOOO SLOOOOOW and the waiter seemed to keep forgetting I was there. grrr. I had the Mediterranean omelet which was very good.. potatoes on the side were also tasty. They serve these mini little pancakes as an appetizer and they are absolutely delicious! So as far as food is concerned, I highly recommend this place for brunch. Back to the service. First it took him forever to take my order. The menu isn't that extensive, so I'm not sure why he thought I needed that long. As mentioned part of my order was green tea.... which he never brought. When one of the other servers brought my appetizer over, I had to ask him where my green tea was - it finally came after I had been there for at least 20+ minutes. Of course it was scorching so it took another 15+ minutes for me to be able to drink it. Meanwhile, I had a water glass.. that was empty for a good 10-15 minutes before I could get his attention for more water. I finished my food in a relatively short period of time... and then it took him another 10-15 minutes to notice I was done and clearly waiting for my check. Next time I find myself in Greenville, I will definitely go back and give it another try..and hopefully have better service and be able to try the coffee! read more

Late night spot when I don't want ice cream downtown and want to be inside warm. I usually get the mocha cheesecake but they were out so I got the turtle cheesecake. It was so good but too many pecans on top but still the flavor was perfect. My guest got the trigger pie and only gets that, they absolutely love it. They personally would prefer their ice cream on the same plate like they used to do but now it comes in a side cup. I think the seating in the first room should be reorganized and the red room should be deep cleaned. It looks and feels musty. read more

Came here with my wife twice over the week and have visited this place once last year. The aesthetic and ambiance is a 4/5 but everything else is just average. I won't say much about the service because it seemed like everyone was busy getting the dozens of orders coming in all at once so I didn't expect stellar service. Drinks came out in a respectable amount of time. I like that everyone buses their own table. The place gives off a cool Speakeasy vibe. The coffee and food however are just completely average and bland. The first day we were here, my wife ordered a decaf iced mocha with white chocolate + peppermint and instead she got a latte. She hates lattes. The second day we came back for another try, she ordered the same thing but they gave it to her caffeinated and she's super sensitive to caffeine. Also ordered my plain iced mocha with light ice and it looked like I got the same amount of ice as a standard. Also the drinks tasted drastically different the second day which tells me there's not much consistency in how drinks are made. The flavorings don't add much pizzazz to the drinks. It's coffee. If that's all you like then great! I love supporting local businesses but it's rough to buy an inferior product to Starbucks when you market it at a similar price. It's not bad by any means! Just not worth the price when you have competitors who sell a more memorable product. read more

Stopped in here based on a recommendation by a friend. Well the vanilla iced coffee and peanut butter chocolate cake I had was very good. My wife said the carrot cake was amazing. The place was packed but we found a table outside and the weather was perfect, so that worked out just fine. Edit: I tried the carrot cake and it's amazing. Good coffee, over priced desserts, lackluster server. We decided to go here after dinner for dessert and a coffee. First off the server brought 3 desserts and stated she'd be right back. Approx 10 minutes later and after the kids ate the first three dessert I got my coffee (a simple macchiato) and the final desserts. When we got our check there was a 19% gratuity b/c 2 adults, and 4 kiddos. The server deserved 5%. Sorry, but having been a server, she sucks!
