It's summer and time to go back to Cold Stone and have great ice cream. Cold Stone in Venice is my favorite one. It is right on Washington Blvd. near the beach. Just park and walk. The whole area is fun to walk and on the corner is Cold Stone to reward you for walking a block. They are open most nights until 10 pm which is great for after dinner. They are also open 7 days a week, so you won't miss out. They make your cone for you by taking your ice cream and, well, smashing it and adding whatever toppings you may want. I always have my grandson get his in a cup so I don't end up wearing part of the cone. They have so many toppings that it is hard to get it all in one cone. This is the era of Frozen Yogurt, exotic Ice Creams, and Shaved Snow, so, going into a Cold Stone Creamery has become a rare occurrence for me. God, how I used to love Cold Stone. Fat Free Sweet Cream with Raspberries and Almonds is my favorite Cold Stone Creamery creation. Walking from the beach and feeling nostalgic, I decided to stop in this small ice cream shop and relive some fond flavors with my favorite. Sadly, they were out of Raspberries and Blackberries. I ended up getting Butterfinger instead, but it wasn't what I had my heart set on. Anyhoo, the Sweet Cream was still sweet and the fun of having a guy mash up my own mix was as cool as ever. This Cold Stone Creamery, on the corner of Pacific Ave and W Washington Blvd, a mere block off the Ocean Front Walk where my boyfriend and I were riding our rented Pedego electric bikes, offered the perfect solution to our dilemma of how to beat the heat. This place is beyond tiny, but nobody seems to mind. There are five tables crammed onto the sidewalk out front that are meant to seat 2 people at each. That's it. And pretty much every seat is taken on this sizzling summer Saturday afternoon. Cold Stone Creamery approaches the sale of ice cream a little differently than many of their competitors. They start with only about 20 flavors, but then encourage you to add mix ins (nuts, fuit, candy, cakes & cookies) to create what they refer to as signature flavors. The base is a scoop of your favorite ice cream which is placed on a frozen granite stone, and sprinkled your favorite mix-ins and blended together as you watch. The flavor is freshly blended one portion at a time, and you can tell the difference in the taste. The stone keeps the ice cream from melting during the mixing process. You can choose your own combinations or choose one of their 20 signature flavors such as Strawberry Banana Rendezvous or Loaded Peanut Butter Batter. Mmmm... Their ice cream creations come in three sizes Like It (5 oz), Love It (8 oz), Gotta Have it (12 oz). You can get them in bowls, cones, waffle cones, and chocolate dipped waffle cones. And for the health conscious there are some lower calorie options, referred to as their 'sinless' options which dramatically reduce your calorie and fat content. Cold Stone also carries a variety of novelty items such as smoothies (sinless or lifestyle), ice cream cakes, and ice cream cupcakes. On this particular visit, the boyfriend chose the Cheesecake Fantasy which starts with the cheesecake ice cream and adds the mix-ins graham cracker pie crust, blueberries, and strawberries. It's sweet and fruity and perfectly fits that California fresh and fantastic feel, the perfect apres-beach treat. My choice was heavily influenced by the brightly colored promotional signage advertising a new flavor, the Berry Paradise Crunch, which starts with a hibiscus sortbet (who could resist that? not me!) and layers on a double dose of berry granola and sweet and juicy fresh raspberries. Seriously? How could I NOT try this sweet summary treat? Every bite was a little taste of heaven. Pure heaven. My mouth is watering just writing this review about it. Great... now I'm going to have to fit a trip to Cold Stone into my already busy schedule today. In any other location, the tiny size of the store and the lack of seating in which to enjoy your frozen delicacy would be a serious detriment to the whole experience but in this location it works. People want to get in and get out with their dessert and continue on their way. We have things to do and places to go. I know that some nights, like tonight, I will have to stand in a long line to get my ice cream. But here's the thing: I had been waiting all day long, looking forward to my standard creation. Poor customer service... Nothing is wrong with the ice cream. You get all you'd like from a Cold Stone Creamery at this location. I was on the HUNT for Grape Nut ice cream, called more than a few ice cream shops and had no luck. I decided to ask if I brought a box of Grape Nut cereal would they mix it in some ice cream. I was told, by who I now know is a new employee that he'd check with his manager. I overheard him ask and the manager say "Yeah sure." He of course told me the same. A couple hours pass, excuse me for having other responsibilities, I head over with my family to create this ice cream dream. Side Note: Did you know Grape Nut cereal is $6 a box?! We get to the counter and started sampling flavors to make the perfect combo. The crew member, she didn't have a badge on, was annoyed. Sighing heavily, rolling her eyes, just -- Anyway, we decided on 3 flavors to be mixed together. They don't do that. We explained that we were willing to pay for the 3 flavors, she huffed off to ask someone if it was ok. I proceeded to tell her what I wanted and what I was told over the phone from a manager; she flat out said no. Ok, Fair enough; if it isn't the policy. Say so. I explained the whole call and the "okay" I was given. She seemed to get even MORE annoyed. So we asked to speak with a manager. She said there wasn't one. We asked to speak with whomever she asked and she told us he wasn't a manager just a regular crew member. "So can we talk to him?" She rolled her eyes again (!!) and went to get him. He (I think his name was Jorge) came out told us that they weren't allowed to mix in anything but what they provided. I then explained what I was told. So he made sure I got the employees names I may have spoke with, they're tenure and the so called managers willingness to bend the rules. We were also told that there are no managers at this location, no shift leads on duty, only "regular" crew members Suspicious. We decided to mix it ourselves but still wanted 3 flavors. Again with the "We can't." Then added "You'd have to pay for the third flavor" ‍ To close this out cause I'm getting long winded... 1. You may not bring your own mix-ins 2. You may not mix 3 ice cream flavors 3. There are NO managers. So don't ask. (Kinda reminds me of the PopCopy skit from the Chapelle show) 4. If you're interested in trying Grape Nut Ice Cream, we mixed Vanilla, Cheesecake and Sweet Cream. I painstakingly mixed the cereal into the ice cream for a nice cool, creamy, crunchy treat! I was really disappointed tonight when I went out to get ice cream. I visited Cold Stone, one of my favorite places, but I arrived at 9:59pm. The door was already locked and I was informed that they close at 10:00. As I let the guys know I was there right at 10:00, it would be nice for them to serve myself and one other customer. The three employees all said that they close at 10:00 and were unwilling to serve myself or the other customer. I was astounded that out of three employees not one of them would have said, "hey this isn't right, we should serve these customers." The only reason I'm not giving this location a single star is because I have received decent service here before. I love this place. They make you feel so welcome. Tonight I came in and I am a regular about once or twice a month. But I stock up on ice cream sandwiches. Tonight I talked to Taylor and they made a special ice cream for my pregnant wife. We talked and she asked if it's a boy or girl. I said I am not sure and she made a special ice cream without cookie dough. I said what do you think our baby could be and she made a note with it saying it's a boy.
