We stopped for ice cream and SALT AND STRAW, before heading back to San Diego. It's sort of a tradition to get an ice cream on a day trip. We had heard of KINNEY BLVD from the FRIDAY Food Truck Cookout. I learned that that's where they filmed the last scenes in the movie CHEF!!! In the ice cream shop, they had different flavors of different local chefs. I chose the CARAMEL ICE CREAM in a waffle cup. As for my Partner, he chose the STRAWBERRY SORBET in a waffle cone. It was a very hot day and this looked like a perfect rest stop for the kids and I. Started by Kim Malek and her cousin, they had both never made ice cream before and are completely self taught. They have interesting flavors and have expanded quite a bit from their start in Oregon. The Abbot Kinney location was packed and service was a bit slow since their was only one person who was scooping the ice cream and serving as cashier. Honey lavender: Steeped lavender petals in local honey, bringing out more complex and herbaceous flavors. Has a distinct light purple color and did not taste like soap like some places that attempt lavender flavors. Hazelnut cookies and cream: Okay, if you think you've had Cookies & Cream, you haven't tried Salt & Straw's Oregon version. Apparently, Oregon grows like 99% of the country's hazelnuts, and they actually use nuts from their own farm for this. It's a coconut cream base with bourbon vanilla, packed with crushed sandwich cookies and this insane hazelnut butter fudge ripple. read more

This ice cream store is one of my favorites and their limited editions are always interesting. This time I got Hong Kong milk tea with toasted white chocolate. It has bold flavor of Hong Kong milk tea and chunks of chocolate pieces in it. There is a public parking lot in the back and also street parking are available. Service was great, patiently accommodating my tasting requests. The store was a bit smaller than others in my opinion. They have a bench outside to enjoy the ice cream. read more

There is a line to order, but it didn't go out the door, thank goodness. Can't complain coz I came with out of towners and they had to try flavors too. I mean, that's one of the things that we like about Salt & Straw, right? The shop still has the irresistible (to me) aroma of freshly make waffle cones. Which tempted me to get that again. Though I'm nostalgic for the old Abbott Kinney with the hippie gift shops and tarot readers, I can't be sad about Salt & Straw's presence. Absolutely delicious Summer flavors. read more

Forgot to mention "blue cheese pear" ice cream flavour,- has been a great surprise and finding. Love the taste and the mix of those too - very u expected and soft. Rarely do you see such high ratings with these many reviews for an ice cream place. They are definitely doing a lot right! The service is top notch. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. The amount of samples they provide is outrageous. I basically had what seemed like 8 samples to narrow down the ice cream (sea salt ice cream with caramel ribbons) and then the perfect pairing to go with it (coffee lovers was the winner, but it was pretty close with the mint or malted cookie dough). The person who helped us was so generous and kind offering so many samples and, asking questions to help us narrow down preference. Their scoops are generous as well and the ice cream is top notch (rich, smooth, creamy with wonderful flavor combinations!) This is one of the best ice cream places around! read more

Some good ice cream bro. Gourmet. Not all the flavors are gonna taste good that way of course. My friend liked the olive oil one and I could not taste a thing. I just got a big pile of junk that tasted hecka sweet. It was great. It's on the expensive side even for gourmet though it's basically the cost of a cheap dinner. And that's exactly what it was. New seasonal flavors every month I wanna say. Sigh. More chances to get fat at the expense of my wallet. read more

I finally made a visit here after all these years. Shame on me! I ordered a kids size scoop of hazelnut cookies and cream. It was the perfect size to satisfy my craving with the right amount of sweetness. I also sampled another flavor with strawberry and coconut and that was so refreshing. One of the things that impressed me most about Salt & Straw is that they train their staff so well. I came in when there was enough time to not feel bad about a leisurely taste-and-chat. During which the employee gave me a cool rundown on the difference between various starting concoctions that can become ice cream vs. sherbet. I was like 'wow, they know their craft here.' And what a craft is is. I'm a sucker for several of the recurring flavors like woodblock chocolate that gets atomized into a fine dust and launched into every spoonful of the ice cream for a sort of woody, salty chocolate experience. When there's a line, I like to just head right for the freezers, pick pre-packed pints of whatever sounds most delicious to me at the time, and I get those to go. The pint rarely outlives the day when I get home. read more

Stopped by here today for a scoop of ice cream. I was helped by Tino who was more than willing to give me samples before deciding on what flavor yo get. I've been obsessed with salt and straw for years, but haven't been to this location. It's located in the busy Abbott Kinney area. It definitely is hard to find parking for as well as has very long lines. We came in right before closing to try one of the new seasonal flavors, toasted white chocolate with almonds. I liked the ice cream quite a bit, but I can't say their portions were particularly generous and compared to the Manhattan Beach location, They seem to be kind of skimpy on the scoop. especially for it being nearly a 9 dollar scoop of ice cream. However, salt and straw will always be my favorite ice cream joint and I will definitely keep coming back. read more

This place offers some very unique and unusual flavours--definitely not your typical vanilla-and-chocolate lineup. Some combinations were a bit out there, but it's a fun spot if you're into trying new things. The waffle cones were excellent--crispy, fresh, and held up well. It's definitely on the pricier side, so be prepared to pay a bit more than usual for your scoop. Parking can be a challenge--street parking is limited, especially on the main road. You might have better luck on the smaller side streets nearby, but it can take a few laps. Not many sitting options, there is a little bench outside and a few stools inside. Worth a visit if you're adventurous with flavors and don't mind a bit of a hunt for parking! read more

They both complemented each other fabulously since the Daisy Chains flavor has pink frosting and sugar cookies in a vanilla base, whereas the apple cider donuts flavor has a lot of cinnamon and some caramel adorned inside. I also have routinely skipped out on their waffle cones -- a crime because they taste superb and smell even better. It holds a surprisingly generous amount of ice cream and doesn't melt so long as you stay inside or are not in hot weather.

The servers are generous about letting you try samples, and you should take advantage of that fact to figure out what you want. After all, you'll pay roughly five dollars for a small so you should enjoy the flavors you ultimately get. My favorite flavor is the first on the menu--the sea salt with caramel ribbons. The salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough, honey lavender, and freckled woodblock chocolate are also great. If you want to go a little less conventional, you should try the avocado and oaxacan chocolate or the black olive goat cheese flavors. Went in over the busy holiday weekend due to the extremely hot weather. The aroma of the freshly made waffle cones drew me into the door. I've heard alot about their ice cream and I live in Venice so I finally wanted to give it a try. First off, the employees were super friendly! I'm not sure who the the female employee was that was standing outside greeting customers was but, she was really nice. Also the young gentleman Chris that helped me pick my order(after i tried about 10 flavors) was also super nice and engaging. I ended up choosing the Cold Brew Cashew Praline off of his recommendation. I was not disappointed at all. The Cold Brew flavor itself was creamy and not too sweet and cashews just added to the overall flavor experience. The Brownie and Pumpkin flavor they are absolutely delicious as well. The flavors were very creative and I enjoyed the ice cream so much that I purchased 3 pints to take home. When I got home and read the labels, all 3 flavors had GUAR GUM and CARAGEENAN in their list of ingredients (Sea salt w/ caramel ribbon, roasted strawberry with white chocolate, and chocolate gooey brownie). While I know there is controversy over food additives like carrageenan, some say it's safe and others say it causes health problems, my food philosophy in life is to avoid ingredients that only scientists can pronounce. There are plenty of delicious ice cream options that don't contain carrageenan. For about $11 a pint, I prefer my ice cream without controversial additives. Whether you are cool with these ingredients or not, I think it's important just to be informed and aware in order to make your own decision. read more

Drove by it earlier in the day and there was a line around the block- I scoffed, mocked the people in line in my head and drove home making fun of the hipsters on the street. Drove back at night. Found a space right in front. Good start. Went in- seemed like some nice families inside. Went to line and was greeted by a very friendly employee. The staff is always so kind. I have been twice in the past few weeks since I jus moved here. I used to be someone who always went to yogurtland but salt & straw has way more choices and better selection. Salt & Straw also has tons of toppings that you couldn't get at yogurtland. I love the other merchandise that is not frozen yogurt too, like the t-shirts, plushies, and bags. Everything is pretty adorable! When I visited today, I got a free $5 gift card! I liked the ice cream, but I had a pretty bad experience there. While ordering, the person serving the ice cream kept groaning every time I asked for a sample. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe a long day or something, but she kept on doing it. Then when I couldn't find my wallet she just left, and I waited 10 minutes for someone else to come and charge me. I couldn't believe it. If you are a massive group then you take priority over the single person who has come in the ice cream store. When I made a point that I was before the group of 8 German tourists the girl serving me looked like she wanted to kill me and started shaking. I asked her if it was a problem to serve in order of who came first. It clearly was. Ice cream is good but this left a bitter taste in my mouth. I am a lover of ice cream and all things sweet and whoa was this place amazing! Their flavors were light, unique and balanced. I don't think I have had anything this good in a while so I am glad I bumped into this place. The only downside and hence why the four stars would have to be the wait, which I know is out of anyone's control. Maybe it was a one time thing but being I lack patience it felt very tedious.
