We had an excellent meal here last week! The food is fresh and expertly prepared and the service was amazing. I had the crab and lobster cakes, which were very rich and filling. I went to lunch here with my mom one day after shopping downtown. They had a great wine selection, and the food was also good. I had a crab cake sandwich and she had the turkey panini. Seriously, we were in town for a concert at the Rose music center, and all the really close restaurants are chains or sports bars. It was a stroke of luck to find this place in nearby Tipp. We were surprised to hear they were booked upon our arrival, on a Wednesday at 5:30. tiny town, Wednesday. The staff was super accommodating and offered us a seat st the full service bar. I dug in and asked for a table, the hostess let me know that though they were booked, she could give us a table until 615. We enjoyed, a fast delicious dinner of tuna tartare, sea bass and rare duck breast, all expertly prepared and presented. The reason for the busyness was "wine down Wednesday" which afforded us excellent wine for $5 a glass?!!! We finished at exactly 6:15, and moved to the bar for one more glass of wine. Housed in a former bank, this French Provencal gem offers excellent customer service and well-prepared dishes. Lunch and dinner are an experience not to be missed. The interior décor offers privacy and comfort while dining in a elegant environment. Unfortunately, they are not open on Sundays for brunch, which would be a great offering, especially if their offerings were unique. Recommendations for Lunch: Charleston Crab Cake Sandwich or quiche of the day. My biggest disappointment was the removal of the Potato Duchesse soup from the menu. Dinner: It's been years since I've dined for the evening repast and it seems they no longer serve the ostrich, which was a supreme dish. Wine: Rosa Regale', divine dessert wine pairs well with most items on the menu. Suggestions: Never place a customer in the booth located in the hallway with the coats until you renovate that particular area. It's cold (breezy in winter) and insulting. Ask first. Perhaps, you can take down all of those coat hooks and place small tables for two under the windows. This way, it becomes a more private area and people do not wait as long. read more

I made a reservation for my wife and I for a date night. We were early for the reservation and seated immediately. The hostess was very nice. She served us water immediately and stated the waitress would be with us shortly. We waited over 20 minutes as numerous waitresses walked by without us being helped. Another table was seated 10 feet from us and helped immediately with drinks and appetizers. Even the 95 year old woman got her birthday dessert that looked like cat food. Apparently if you're under 50, you get no service. You would think somewhere as pretentious as this would make sure their customers were served. Their loss too as we would have easily dropped over $100 between drinks, apps, entrees, and dessert. We won't be back. read more

Such a great place! My family and I make a special trip here a few times a year, and it is always delicious. They have a terrific selection of wines, and the artichoke dip and portobello mushroom sandwich are both amazing dishes. My grandmother always gets the quiche and is never disappointed. The iced tea is the best, made with fresh mint. Take a trip here for a special occasion; you won't regret it. The only downside is the somewhat snooty staff, but it's not too terrible. Most would overlook Coldwater Cafe because of the location. However I would advise you to think twice. The staff was every bit as amazing as the food. It was an inviting and relaxing atmosphere with plenty of character and charm. In town alone on business, just by happenstance, I ran in for a quick lunch. Two hours later I felt as if I could have spent the rest of my evening there. Later on the same day, I did just that. The staff remembered my name, beer of choice, and even where I was from. I used to eat at Coldwater years ago (late 90's) when we lived in Troy. With a son now attending UD, we decided to treat him to a meal here along with our youngest daughter (in highs school so young is relative). The food was as great as I remember. They have moved up the street a bit to a new location, but the food is still wonderful. They had venison as a special and it was perfect. There was no gaminess at all, and the sauce did not overpower the meat. Two filet's were ordered for the meal as well, along with a veggie pasta. The steaks were perfect, and my daughter, who usually is not big on vegetarian meals enjoyed her pasta. Finally, I have to mention desert. They do an amazing job on deserts - English Tea Cake is a signature dish for them and is wonderful. The carrot cake cannot be beat. The vanilla creme brulee and chocolate mousse cake were also excellent. The service was as good as I remembered. If you want a nice, relaxing meal, make sure you hit Coldwater. read more

I have to say, I am mad about having waited this long to try Coldwater Café. I heard about this place about 2 years ago and it is only now that I got a chance to go. It certainly did not disappoint. I haven't had a meal this good in a long time. While I waited for my friends, I decided to have a drink, good old stand by - Amaretto Sour. It was quite tasty. The sour mix was actually made fresh and was not a store bought mix, which was a definite plus. I was even taken aback by the fact that I had a real cherry in my drink, not a maraschino. I guess sometimes its just the little things that can make all the difference in the world. Coldwater Café is located in downtown Tipp City, shortly after you cross the train tracks. Parking is in the back off of third street, but depending on the time of day, you can park on the street. Coldwater Café is a cute small restaurant that has a nice ambience and would be great for a special occasion such as an anniversary or date night. Their wine list is on a tablet that they provide for you to order from. I thought that was pretty cool. Now to the good stuff. First let me mention that they bring out salted focaccia bread that was very addictive. Its not made in house, but when bread tastes that good, I don't care where it comes from. There were so many things that sounded good on the menu that I wanted to try but I settled on the grilled swordfish. Its well known that I am a carnivore, but I wanted to go in a different direction and be a little more healthy for a change, hence the swordfish. And I am glad I did. Swordfish is a thick, meaty fish and it was cooked very well and was very tasty. It originally came with green beans and bok choy. Since bok choy was one too many veggies for me, I switched it out. Not to mention as I ate I even hummed which is always a sign that something is delicious. I of course had to taste the meals of my friends too and I have to say that I would have been happy with any one of those dishes as well. One friend had the grilled pork chop and the other had brie pasta w/ shrimp. Once again I say, they were all good. On to the desserts, because of course your dining experience cannot be complete if you don't have dessert. However, Coldwater Café did lose points on the dessert. Because I was trying to up my potassium levels, I decided to go with the banana cream pie. I was somewhat disappointed with it. It really didn't have a banana taste. Although the crust was very good and the whipped topping was sweetened, the pudding part itself tasted pretty neutral. It didn't even taste like vanilla. And there is a strong possibility in my opinion that the bananas were not ripe enough. I didn't try the key lime pie, but was told it was good but very rich. The carrot cake nice and moist, but something was a little off with the icing. Perhaps I should have stuck with their signature dessert which is an english tea cake w/ butter rum sauce...mental note for next time. All in all, it was a great dining experience and I definitely plan on going there again. Prices for main course were around $20-30, so expect to pay a bit if you get a dessert and drink. In my opinion it was money well spent. The staff was also very friendly and made you feel welcomed. They do take reservations but will not seat you until your entire party is present. Side note....take a trip to the bathroom, its cute and there is a dining room in the back that is actually in a bank vault. read more

My wife and I enjoyed our dinner on Saturday night. We both had lobster crab cakes as dinner portion although it was offered on the menu as "First Course" . They were great. No breading. Taste of the Acorn squash soup was perfect. Many specialty drinks and all of the desserts are wonderful . We celebrated birthdays and they acknowledged without making it a scene. We came here twice on our vacation. First, we came for dinner. This place is a renovated bank and they've done a good job with it. They insist on a reservation but (at least in the middle of the week) you don't need one but if you do, specify if you want to sit in the vault or not. For dinner, 3 of us got the steak and one got the halibut. The steaks were larger than the portion size that the menu stated- which is a great thing. I will say that they give you more than you think you will get for the price. I started with the Cauliflower Gorgonzola soup both times. Let me tell you, it is delicious but very heavy. You should either order a cup or split it with someone. As for the steaks, I think mine was overcooked. It is hard to find a place that does a good medium rare. It was very medium. The potatoes were creamy and very good as well. We finished our meal with a dessert. It can't remember the name but it was very chocolately. I will say the portion was huge and perfect to split with 4 people. The loss of the star was because of the service. The dinner service was quite slow and it took about 20-25 minutes and a reminder to get my glass of wine.The second time I went, I got the soup and small house salad that is usually on the dinner menu. And their quiche is fantastic! But they only have it for lunch and sell out often so go early to get it. read more

I had no idea where we were going for anniversary dinner but was taken to Tipp City. While looking thur the shops - several antique and unique shops, I had seen several photos of Coldwater Cafe. I had ask someone about the cafe and they stated that the lady that original location owned/ran it had a small place about 7 tables (which was in photos), but then her & son moved to new location. Must say when I told my husband where ever you are taking me for dinner, let's go cause I am getting hungry. We were right by the Coldwater Cafe, he stated well let's give this place a try - REALLY? The outside and word CAFE didn't impress me for our anniversary (I been to some very nice restaurants over the years). Once thur the doors I was surprised now nice the place is, well lay-ed out. Well my husband had made reservations for our anniversary - points for him! We were seated from the front door and away from the kitchen. YES, ladies they do hear us when we request tables when out - points again for him! The front has the bar and several wing-back chairs by the 2 side fireplace. The main dining area is between the fireplace and some pillars which has tables in the middle and wall lined with booths (behind the pillars are 2 tables - note that you don't want to be seated here because you are RIGHT by the serve station / so ALOT of traffic), also there is a small room in the vault (yes, the vault - the place use to be a bank) which has about 8 tables, along with one private room downstairs for a party of maybe 12 at the most in the back. They did stated that they have area upstairs that they can use for large groups such as receptions and business meetings. Yes again my husband got points! Called ahead and ordered in my favorite Asti - which is not on the menu - and it was brought in. Love when he does little things like that! Anyway - had the lobster crab cake appetizer which was OK (from EAST COAST), I thought the too much oil was used to sear the cakes - a great cake is boiled / not seared. House salad was nice with the meal, blue cheese dressing / order crumbs on the side was nice - BUT order the cucumber dill dressing very nicely done. Homemade bread and soft whipped butter, fresh baked you can't get much better than that. I choose the ostrich fillet which was done medium to medium rare was interesting to try and believed that it tasted nice - kinda like a good beef fillet. However, I believe that too much cherry and red wine reduction was plated and took away from the meal just abit. Husband had choose the Chilean Sea Base (yes, they do fillet their own fish so you are getting what you are paying for), he had never had sea base before but liked it. Both were plated with fresh green beans nicely cooked and one choose the mashed red potatoes and the other choose the golden yukon - we both enjoyed the sides. Desserts - went for the must have per the menum, English Tea Cake with warm butter sauce. WOW, don't pass on this one moist cake with a few soft nuts and that yummy sauce dessert. We also had the Creme Brulee which was as close to the french make as I have had in the states....served abit chilled, prefer at room temp like the french serve it. Followed up with coffee which had a great favor. Our server was Nicole - right on spot for everything. All in all, a nice place for dinner. If the lobster cakes were better and not so much sauce on the ostrich I would give it a 5 for the food. Also, I prefer table clothes on the table - none here. read more

My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary at Coldwater Cafe...we cannot say enough about our experience. For starters, they went out of their way to help us celebrate our special occasion by wishing us a happy anniversary from the start. Seating us in a private area, and treating us to their house specialty desert made our special day extraordinary. Amy, our server, was perfect in every way. Attending to our needs in a timely fashion with an appropriate and pleasant familiarity made the evening feel cozy and intimate. Now to the food...an experience unto itself. We highly recommend the ostrich if available. Tasty and succulent...it will melt in your mouth. The scallops were perfectly prepared and simply divine...when combined with the wild mushroom risotto it was a celebration. The cheese plate was fun and adventurous, and as my husband says "the cesar salad was just rediculously good". Thank you Coldwater for such a wonderful and memorable evening! read more

I have had several great meals at Coldwater in the past. I have also used them several times for catering, and it was wonderful. The problem with this restaurant is not the food... it's the attitude of the establishment. They really do not care about customer service. At lunch they do not take reservations (not even during the holiday season when office workers are scheduling holiday luncheons on a time limit). They ask you to call ahead, which I did, for seating. I called at 10 a.m. (as they asked) for an 11:45 table. They said that it would be no problem. It was a problem. We waited 45 minutes for a table to open up because they sat people where they should have been holding the table a mere 5 minutes before we walked in. Did the staff care that we were upset...no! The hostess actually said "we don't have a table to put you at so you are just going to have to wait." No apologies or anything. They do you the pleasure of eating there and they don't care how you feel. You are made to feel that you are lucky to be there. Mark my words someday their snooty, better than others attitude will come back to bite them where the sun doesn't shine. So after 45 minutes we walked across the street to Harrison's and had a great meal. Was it Coldwater...no, but at least they were happy to serve us and treated us with respect. read more

Very nice restaurant in the middle of a charming town. We stopped for lunch on a Saturday and they were slammed. The ambiance is so pretty! We got seated in the really cool vault in the back. The waitress, Ashley, was super nice and attentive even as she dealed with a somewhat difficult table next to us. We had the chili and cornbread to start. The cornbread was good but the chili tasted more like a bolognese sauce than chili. We split the chicken salad sandwich, which was OK, and the reuben, which was delicious. I've been to the Coldwater for years. It's the prettiest restaurant I nthe entire Miami Valley area. Beautifully decorated in an old bank. Just the environment creates a special experience. They have the best quiche I've ever had. ALL the varieties they make are great. I haven't had a bad meal there ever until my last visit. Ordered a hamburger. There were a lot of words in the item description - talked about homemade potato chips, French fries, salad greens, slaw - I couldn't really grasp what they were talking about until a monstrous way too tall hamburger got delivered to me - I immediately scrapped the pallid French fries OFF the hamburger - asked the waitress how one would eat something so exorbitantly tall - she said to try to squish it down. Cut it in half and tried to eat the half - everything on it had it's own dressing - I had fluids dripping down my hands, the knife. It was a mess. Something you'd find in a male oriented sports bar maybe. SO. Be aware. I can say however that every single meal FOR YEARS, except this one, has been great! They knew how distressed I was and showed some real customer concern - they gifted me with their signature desert - something wonderful - for free to take home. This is really a nice, nice place. Extremely pretentious! LOL. We went in around 5 'o' clock and were asked if we had a reservation. We said "no" and the hostess acted offended. We were seated anyway and had our meal. When we were leaving the restaurant was virtually empty. So I wonder why we were asked if we had a reservation? Sure, Coldwater is pretty good but they need to drop the snobby attitude.
