Great local place. I've had the salmon as well as the sea bass (currently not on menu) and never been disappointed. Street parking but also a parking lot in the back of place. It's in an old. Disclaimer: My brother-in-law is the sous chef at Coldwater Cafe. However, I went in with a very open mind. After hearing all about Coldwater Cafe from my inlaws, I went with them there for dinner on Saturday night when I was in town. Coldwater Cafe is located at the old Fifth Third building and is much larger than the previous Coldwater Cafe incarnation. The fireplace when you first walk in is cozy and gives the front a nice atmosphere. The bar is not very large, but provides a few seats if you are waiting for a table. The main restaurant area has booths and tables and there are two rooms where you can have private events - the Boardroom and the Vault. The colors used for decoration are soothing and inviting. Our service was excellent, part of which I credit to the experienced and friendly waitresses and part of which I credit to the fact that my inlaws are regulars at Coldwater. The restaurant could use more staff because the hostesses bus the tables, which to me is odd for the caliber restaurant Coldwater is trying to be. On to the food and wine...the bottle of Riesling we enjoyed (not sure of the name, but it was #222) was very nice and complimented our food well. I had the lobster crabcakes for appetizer - while they were good for the most part, I didn't enjoy how crispy they were. I am very picky when it comes to crabcakes and I prefer them softer without a crispy coating. The addition of lobster was interesting, but I think with jumbo lump crabcakes would be much better. I also had the grilled chicken salad which was really good - the chicken was cooked well and I loved how it had just a hint of seasoning. The mixed greens in the salad were fresh and the dish was a good size for dinner. My chocolate mousse cake was delicious, light, and huge! I took half of it home for my inlaws to enjoy. The menu for Coldwater has a lot of appealing menu items and I am eager to go back on my next visit to Tipp City to try the shrimp and brie pasta dish which sounded really interesting. The prices are extremely reasonable - a fruit and cheese plate is only $4.95 for example. I do think there are some things, such as the crabcakes, that could be improved upon. I think the food garners 3.5 stars, but I will round up to 4 because of excellent service and extremely reasonable food prices. read more

Such a nice place! I had never been to this restaurant, but apparently it used to be in a much smaller space before it moved into this old bank. The decor is very high end, and there are private rooms in the back that used to be the vault and board room. We dined with a group of 8 in the board room for my grandmother's 82nd birthday. The menu is diverse without being overwhelming, and I was really pleased with the quality and creativity of the food within the price range. I was expecting to pay $15+ for a meal, but all of the menu items were at that price point or lower. I had a super fresh and delicious salad with mint, watermelon, and feta cheese. I started with a cup of their soup of the day, which was a vegetarian mushroom soup. It had such a unique broth that must have had some kind of red wine base. Would totally order it again. Our server was great, and my grandma was given a free tea cake for her birthday! The server even brought it out on a plate with a lit candle and led the group in a rousing chorus of the birthday song. I've passed by this place so many times and had no clue how nice it is inside. I took my Mother here, and we REALLY enjoyed our dinner. My only complaint (I'll just get it over with right away) was the location of our table. We were right on the end, nearest to the door, and we could barely see the decor because we were staring at a wall and watching as staff and customers walked by. Not a big deal...we can request a different table in our reservation next time. Now to the important parts - the service, wine, and food. Our server was knowledgable, and she checked on us several times, despite having a full house of customers. We were never left waiting. We ordered Opus One. Enough said there. My favorite part about the wine list was the prices of the bottles. I'm not sure I've seen good wine ever served at near retail price in a restaurant. Thank you! I hope you continue to do that! If so, I'll continue to buy the good stuff when visiting my Mom in Ohio. We both ordered a filet, and each of ours was cooked exactly as prescribed. I hate an overcooked filet, so I was so happy! We did order the signature dessert, and it went well with our espresso, but it was rich! Recommend sharing one between two people. read more

Coldwater Cafe is clearly one of the best restaurants in the Dayton - Miami Valley area. The restaurant occupies a former bank in downtown Tipp City. The decor has a charming elegant, yet homey feel. The overall layout allows for a quiet romantic setting. We sat in what was the bank vault area, complete with the vault door still present. The staff was friendly from the young woman that greeted us and led us to our table to the our server Kate. There was a very professional manner in which Kate presented the special of the day. Even though our area had only about 6 tables, once over half were occupied, another server became present. I have been in restaurants where servers are responsible for a large area making service suffer. Not the case here. I must give kudos to management for great utilization of their servers. As for the food, the menu is eclectic. There is something for everybody but all done with a culinary flair. I had the special, encrusted walleye fish on a bed of mashed red potatoes and sriracha sauce. My husband had the tuna steak on a bed of Chinese style noodles. Everything was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. I highly recommend this restaurant and we will return. read more

This is my "go to" restaurant for a nice dinner out. I've been many times with friends. The service has always been great. No matter how I'm dressed (from suits to jeans), I've always been treated well. The servers are friendly and can be fun, but then again, I always go in with a smile because I know the food is going to be fantastic. The lobster crab cakes are fantastic. It's hard to get a different appetizer because that is just so damn good. I recently had their Rangoon and it was great too, but seriously go for the lobster crab cakes. I've never gone wrong with one of their entrees, and I've probably tried them all. Pork shoulder, fantastic. Brie pasta, incredible. Steaks, amazing. The dessert though...wowzers. The carrot cake is amazing. The frozen peanut butter pie is decadent. Flavored creme brûlées are always delicious. I love to split a bottle of wine, and if you don't finish, they cork. Stopped by for lunch with a coworker and thought highly of this little delicatessen. We were immediately intrigued when the hostess sat us in a small room where we had to walk through a large opening where the door was actually a full on bank vault! Very neat, although cell reception was terrible being inside the vault. The service was superb! The waitress, wish I would have written her name down, was enthusiastic and engaging. It was our first time there and she did a wonderful job explaining the menu and their food. I could easily go back just because of how good the service was. I ordered the triple decker grilled cheese on sourdough with the House made potato chips. The grilled cheese was very tasty, very rich with butter. The house made potato chips were frankly very average. All in all, not a bad meal for under $10. read more

After reading good reviews and being in the area decided to give it a try. Came several minutes before closing on a not so busy day (Tuesday), but that was not a problem. Greeted by a kind waitress ready to offer advice on menu or help you pair the wine with your dinner. Some words of caution: - Soup or salad will come extra - Vine selection by the glass is not that great (Cherry Tart Chardonnay) was just OK, but I have to say I was told to let them know if I do not like it and they will bring me something else to try. Now on a good side I had Salmon: cilantro mustard glaze, warm French lentil salad, banana and horseradish cream - Unusual combination but taste was wonderful. Decent piece of Scottish salmon glazed with cilantro mustard and just the right amount of salt was placed on cooked lentil - I have added some horseradish cream, but did not mix slices of banana. Salmon did have one catch that waitress missed to point out, they prepare it medium cooked which means that very middle of the salmon piece remains raw. - I just mentioned it the waitress when she came to see how do I like it, not as much as complaint, but as advice to point it out when receiving order. - I did not want her to take it back and put it back on fire. When bill came she apologized and took of 50% of salmon order price as " it was not prepared to my liking", nice gesture. All in all food was very good, you will end up paying a little bit more, but on the other side you will not feel like someone tried to rob you while you were having a nice dinner. read more

My son and I had dinner here on a Saturday night. Everything from beginning to end was excellent. We had the brussel sprout app-excellent. I had the filet- cooked perfectly, very tender with asparagus and mashed potatoes. My son had the pork, with mashed potatoes - excellent. The waiter we had could not have been any better. For dessert we had a couple of Rye Old Fashions and again excellent. I look forward to visiting again. read more

Been going here for years. They use to have such interesting dishes....hog snapper fish, etc. Now it's just the same dishes. We came back tonight after a year & it's the same dishes. Food is average, not great. Really miss the variety. Service tonight was very slow. Only saw the waitress a total of 4 times! We went there with a party of 6 for lunch on Saturday. The service was very good. The food however was very disappointing. All of the sandwiches and burgers had huge buns and very little protein inside. The burger was rare to blue, the crab cakes fell apart and were soggy, and the chicken was dry. I should have complained to the chef and I apologize for not bringing it to the kitchens attention. We went here per the suggestion of a few people who highly recommended we try it. Sad to say, we were HIGHLY disappointed. We waited around 20 minutes to be seated (3 of us) even though there were places available, service was terribly slow and not friendly is an understatement, and the food was horrid. I will never try this place again solely based on the service alone. I'm all about trying a place twice before judging but not this place, there is no way this was an 'off day' for them. read more

Beautiful, up-scale restaurant. I recommend for a nice, romantic date night on a weekend when they have live music. The food is delicious, the staff are super friendly, and the carrot cake is amazing. Horrible Place... We drove 26 miles to be greeted by complaints from the cashier that our group had too many people, instead of welcoming us to the restaurant. She said we were only supposed to have 14 people and we had 19. They were not busy. We immediately left the rude Coldwater Cafe and drove to the Mel-O-Dee Restaurant in Park Layne and had a great meal and we were treated wonderfully by every one there. My friends took me to Coldwater Café yesterday (9-9-2021). They go there frequently. They always have such a wonderful meal and rave about dining there. Yesterday was not an occasion to rave about. We arrived around noon without a reservation. The hostess told us there would be a 30 minute wait for an outdoor table. She took our name and phone number. After 45 minutes, we checked - the hostess write down an incorrect phone number. So, we had to wait about another 15 minutes. Maybe we should have realized from that that our dining experience would be less than stellar. My friend ordered the salmon salad, her husband ordered the specialty grilled cheese and I ordered the crab cake sandwich. I had water, she had water and coffee, and her husband had a glass of wine and also water. The wait for the food seemed to be a long time. When our food arrived, I did not get the crab cake sandwich, I got a crab cake salad. Our waitress said she would take it back and get me the sandwich. Then I looked at my friend's salmon salad - it had the smallest filet I had ever seen - not at all like a normal filet. I told both people in my party to start eating while their food was warm. I sat sipping my water and eating bread. My sandwich comes out - the bottom bun was grilled, but the top bun was not grilled and felt cold to the touch, like it had been refrigerated. I made a comment to my friend that the bun was cold. The comment was overheard by someone who was refilling her coffee. My comment was overheard by our waitress who comes back and plops a grilled bun on the table and she said something about how they don't warm the buns, but she brought a warm bun for me. (She really seemed to have an attitude.) I did transfer the top of that bun to my crab cake sandwich, but I lost all the sauce the crab cake was topped with since it all stuck to the old cold bun. I always judge a restaurant by how attentive the wait staff is for refilling drinks. My friend's coffee was refilled. Her husband was asked if he wanted another glass of wine. But at no time, was my water (my only drink) ever refilled. I noticed the table next to us had a carafe of water - why not us? I had drained my glass and almost went into the dining room to get some water. My friend and I went to the restroom and her husband asked our waitress for some water for me. She did bring another water, a to-go cup and our check. All told, with our wait time, our dining experience took well over two hours. If this had been my first time dining at Coldwater Café, I would not return. And I'm sure we will think twice about returning anytime soon. read more

This is a place that you save for a special occasion, or a lunch with friends that you don't see that often. The food is great... the lunch menu is different than the dinner menu. I'm not familiar with the dinner menu, but I know that it must be awesome. The lunch menu is filled with all sorts of yummy possibilities. I usually get the pecan chicken salad which is fantastic. Everyone in our group had the chicken-pecan salad. On past visits, I've tried the portabella sandwich and the Reuben, both of which were quite good. And if you're on a diet, cut your self some slack and try one of their desserts. I always get the English tea cake with it's scrumptious butter sauce. It's simply, to die for! read more

It is with regret that I must rate this place with one star. My poor wife's clothing was soiled by a dirty table cloth while celebrating her birthday. When brought to the attention of the wait staff and manager, they offered only a lint brush. Probably the best restaurant in Tipp City, especially since they moved to their new location, which is a former bank and they have kept some of the old banks decor. So the cool safety deposit boxes in the front entrance-way are legit. It is a fairly large place with lots of small rooms so you can find spots that make it seem secluded. The staff and service are very good. The food has always been very good and offers just enough innovation to make this a place you can go to multiple times. The menu is fairly small and is focused on seafood and poultry with only one burger, a filet, and pork chops being the different options. Prices are reasonable as well. read more

I grew up about 45 miles north of Tipp City, and while my cousins who lived in Tipp had casually mentioned the restaurant (probably to give me directions or something), I never actually dined there until last summer, when I had a mini-reunion with two of my oldest friends. What a great place to reminisce and catch up. Our server knew the menu well, was competent, and smoothly and patiently handled some special dietary requests from one of these friends. Whatever the case, the unflappable server was a real pro, and I say that as someone who has done my time in the industry (in Minneapolis). What was most unforgettable to me was the ostrich with the cherry reduction, which I ordered on the server's recommendation. It was lean, juicy, flavorful, and fantastic. It's been nearly a year since I had it, and I am still thinking about that meal. While there was a bit more sauce than was necessary, it didn't bother me. The ambiance is intimate and cozy, and being that it's in a former bank vault, it's a really nice place for a date or for a small gathering with two or three friends. I'm sad there are not more reviews for Coldwater - I'd add ten more favorable reviews if I could! read more

I happened to be at the restaurant the particular night the power was out with a few friends. The power wasn't just out at Coldwater, it was out on HALF of the street which was completely not their fault. Technically, the restaurant didn't have to even accommodate anyone including the wedding party that was there that night. There was no power in the kitchen and they ended up shutting down the bottom half of the restaurant and turning people away so that they could soley focus on the 60+ people that attended the wedding party that night. Not only that, they set up gas grills OUTSIDE in the alley to plate all of the meals that were promised and had ALL of the staff that night running up and down flights of stairs to get it out to you in a timely manner. To me, that is going above and BEYOND. For someone who didn't even pay for their meal that night, it seems to me, someone is a little stiff collared and needs to lighten up and show some grace where it is deserved. Especially in the restaurant industry. The owner and his staff worked incredibly hard that night to make sure that 60+ people didn't have to go elsewhere. The electricity being out was out of their hands, and could've easily shut down the entire place. My party and I were grateful to even be served drinks. Next time, try being a little bit more considerate to people who go out of their way for you. Coldwater is rated one of the top restaurants in the Dayton area for a reason, and it's not just because of their incredible food. It's the service, the staff, and the hard work they do to make it that way. Please do them a favor and stick to your word by not going back, or to any service industry for that matter. Above average pricing for average food. The waitress was ok but other staff were awful. I emailed the owner and got this exact (and complete) response: "I would encourage you to select those restaurants that serve you well and that are of your liking. I made reservations for last evening at 6:30 for our anniversary. When we arrived (early), we sat at the bar for a while, which was pleasant enough (CWC should consider revamping its cocktails as they aren't as finely crafted as one would expect). Upon arrival, I told the receptionist that we were present for our anniversary. No response (i.e., a congratulatory greeting, I thought, would have been appropriate). We were seated in the private alcove booth. I asked the hostess if we were being placed there because the restaurant didn't want us to be seen (we are a gay married couple). She simply said "no". The alcove booth needs better lighting (dimmer and a candle on the table) and music access as it's very "dead" in that corner. We ordered (the waitress was attentive) and received an appetizer which was amateurish at best (artichoke dip)....I had a few bites and left it. I ordered the chowder. It was good (needed seasoning) but it was oddly served in a very small cup. Chowder needs to be in a bowl to eat with the bread that was served. I was recommended to have the Ahi, which I ordered (always do) medium rare. It arrived and looked fine, but upon disassembling it, the middle was completely raw. I called the waitress over. She said, "hmmmm", and took it away. No apologies, no attempt to correct....nothing. I told her that I ate the cooked section but, again, I left 1/2 the meal. We ordered dessert. It was good. Side note: we mentioned for a second time that it was our anniversary (to the waitress), but she actually came to us when the meal was over and asked if we wanted separate checks. Would this have happened to a hetero couple? Doubt it. Also, I was also perturbed when I received the bill and no adjustments for the appetizer and my meal were made. Being our first anniversary (and our 31st year together), we picked CWC as a locally owned spot. We travel and dine all over the world, but will not return to CWC. Great light lunch....lobster cakes, mushroom soup and a nice glass of Louis Martini cabernet sauvignon. Lovely atmosphere more appropriate for the older set, but nothing lacking. Frendly bartenders at lunch time. I've gone over 40 times in the past year and have never had a bad meal. I try something new each visit.
