Located in Pacific Grove, Phoebe Cafe is one of the best kept secret of this town. Everything here is good - guest service, the quiche, wine selection, the crowd and wow! even their electronic menu display is good! I highly recommend as a must visit when you're in Monterey.

This review is for the Sunset Music Series. They've changed things up a bit for this season. The event is now near the firepits with a lot of seating at picnic tables and four or five fires, a glass wall to block the wine and hosted bar. The chef is grilling up specials that change every week. This is my second time this summer and I am going to come back as often as I can. Specials like Beef Medallions, Watermelon salad, Flatbread, Corn on the Cob, and of course their signature S'mores kits. The acts are top-notch and free to watch. Local favorites like Mark Banks, Andrea Carter and Taylor Rae. I heard Taylor Rae for the first time tonight and now I'm going to watch her website for performances. She's like a cross between Stevie Nix and Norah Jones. We have an abundance of talent in the area and not enough places to see the acts. If you don't want the entrees of the week, you can purchase something from the cafe like cheeseplate, garden salad, etc. If you haven't been to this event yet, it's a must-see. Every Fri. through Aug. and I think the first week of Sept. People know about it and even on a cloudy and chilly night like tonight, there was a crowd.

This is a cafe inside a meeting hall in what used to be a summer camp nestled in the woods. We drove around for a while trying to find it, and then we walked to the dining hall and had to turn back. It turned out to be a little corner of a giant meeting hall that kind of looked like the lobby in The Shining. Rather than staying in the cafe, we took our hot chocolates and wine to the hall and chilled out on the leather couches and easy chairs for hours. Hours! It was so much fun hanging out in this massive living room. My friends and I wandered in from the beach, but the majority of the people there seemed to be gathering for some senior citizen conference. Cool! There were pool tables and a piano if you're into giving surprise concerts. The Pinot noir is TOP. The food was a bit expensive, but it's a literal lodge in the woods, what else do you expect? The pastries were bigger than the average human face. Yum. Loved it! And the views were beautiful too!

Nice little spot if you are staying at Asilomar Conference Grounds! They have quite a large coffee selection.

As one reviewer said, if you are at Asilomar Conference Grounds then Phoebe's is fine and the State Parks are trying to do the cafe justice in their own state park, limited, mind. There is much better in downtown Pacific Grove to be had- please see my other reviews for advice. This is NOT a destination spot for the food! Romance, intrigue, freezing from the beach, warm fireplace, the beautiful, historic setting and the BAR is why we all go to Phoebes. This small cafe is set in Asilomar's historic early 1900's lobby, the Hearst Social Hall, and has indoor and outdoor seating. A dog on a leash outside is fine which makes it a nice coffee or drink spot as it is next to Asilomar Beach. Asilomar beach is a half on leash and half off leash beach. it gets very confusing for the dogs... Several buildings on these grounds, as well as the setting for Phoebe's, were designed by Julia Morgan at the behest of Phoebe Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst. Julia Morgan also designed Hearst Castle. If you like Early California Arts and Crafts History this building is worth the hard brie and meh service to come see after a nice hike at the freezing cold beach, sometimes 4th of July! Yes freezing cold 4th of July. Bring a sweater. The holiday season is a nice time to come after a beach walk for hot chocolate or coffee. The temperature will be about the same as 4th of July and the last few years the chefs from the conference center dining hall have been making and displaying gingerbread replicas of some of the historic buildings in the lobby next to Phoebe's. A fun, free thing for little kids to see.

Now open only 7am to 11am, if I buy a breakfast ticket when checking into Asilomar, what will be the food choices at Phoebe's? I cannot find this info anywhere online. Thanks!

I think they have a separate dining hall, 100 yards of so from the building where Phoebe's is located.

When I walked in it took me back in time to when I was a little girl going into a market with my grandparents back in the 60's-70's. The owner, Bennett, was at the register. He was checking orders and confirming what we ordered. He knew many of his customers by name and knew their regular orders. The sandwiches were HUGE so I ordered 1/2 a sandwich and I only finished 1/3 of the 1/2 sandwich. My husband and son ordered full sandwiches and only finished half of theirs. We took the rest home. Great place. Great food. Friendly owner. Loved it. Highly recommend!!!

If you'd like to order a sandwich, there is a picnic table outside with clipboards and order sheets. You can order off their very extensive menu of sandwiches, or create your own. There is a wide variety of bread, meat, and cheese options so everyone can find something they like. Be very cautious if you order a whole sandwich because saying they are huge is an understatement. When you are ready to order, you bring the sheet to the back left deli counter where they have their display and desserts. While we waited for our sandwiches, we took some time to look around the market. It is fantastic! The decor is lovely. The items they have in stock is also impressive. They have your basic items like chips and soda, but also a large international snack section. There are shelves of foreign chip flavors and drinks which is very neat. They also have a super wide variety of domestic products that you can't typically find everywhere. I was thoroughly impressed with all they have to offer. The sandwich itself was the cherry on the cake. It was the biggest sandwich I have ever seen. I was shocked at how thick and heavy it was. It was incredibly affordable too! It tasted delicious and very fresh. I will definitely be a repeat customer whenever I am in the area.

We met Raul at the counter. He is by far the most friendly, kind and informed restaurant staff (about gluten sensitivity, gluten allergy and what it is to have Celiac) we've ever met. We all agreed they were THE BEST SANDWICHES WE'VE EVER HAD...EVER...ANYWHERE...(mike drop). The freshly baked bread was incredible, all of the ingredients were fresh, even the side salad was amazing!!! The service was straight out of the old days, when people actually had pride in their work and genuinely cared about how you were treated in their establishment. We wish every restaurant that offers gluten free options could have someone as friendly, kind and knowledgeable as Raul. The ambiance was very cute/quaint inside and out. It was a beautiful sunny day so we sat outside to enjoy the sunshine and listen to the sea lions. Raul came out to check on us and we could not thank him enough for his amazing food and hospitality. When we said how much we enjoyed the gluten free bread, he told us he sold the flour (from Italy) inside. My adult son immediately bought some for us to bake gluten-free bread at home. I wasn't even hungry and planned on eating ONE of the tiny skewers of mozzarella cheese with tomato and basil. That's it! But then the hummus and bread arrived, and I could see that was special. We are talking drool-inducing special! The bread was pizza bread, my friends! It was hot, it was crunchy on the outside, and soft and chewy to perfection on the inside! When we arrived they had a small parking lot but busy because they do a lot of Door Dash and Uber Eats business. Once inside I took a quick look at the menu and saw they had breakfast burritos of either Chorizo-Sausage-Ham-Bacon or Veggie. I chose Chorizo breakfast burrito($10.39) The shop is run by the owner-he was the cashier and the cook. In talking to him,he was telling me that his family owns multiple Mexican small shops like this in the Juarez Mexico area and El Paso Texas area.Says that all the shops use the same recipe for their hot sauce that is served with the burritos. Once the burrito arrived,it was both heavy and warm.Once I cut it open,I was able to appreciate the craftsmanship of this burrito in all its chorizo, egg, potato and cheese glory-it was beautiful. As pretty as it was though,it tasted even better,I had planned on only eating half of it as I had a tee time in less than an hour but one bite led to another and then it was gone. I've had many breakfast burritos in my day and as unexpected as this is to say, this may have been the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. Also the aforementioned family-recipe hot sauce that came with the burrito was so spicy yet so tasty--perfect combo to a perfect burrito. In closing,if you ever find yourself in the Monterey area and you want to treat yourself to some upper echelon breakfast burritos-do yourself a favor and stop at 3 Mundos sandwich shop-a top tier food experience awaits.
