The older woman at the front was a bit unprofessional by explaining to us how expensive it was to eat out and how she was frustrated as she was training a bartender which apparently was not her job. All in all we were starving and ended up spending over 100$ and not eating any of it. I would not recommend. read more

We drive through this area often on our way to Tahoe and have been on the hunt for a solid Mexican restaurant. This spot caught our eye so we decided to give it a try without checking reviews first. Walking in I wasn't sure what to expect. The front dining area was empty, and the staff were all gathered. It was early on a Monday, so I figured maybe it gets busier later... We were seated in another dining room, which actually had a few other diners. We ordered chicken enchiladas, mine were the verdes (Swiss-style) and my husband got the red sauce version. We also added a side of guacamole. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to our hopes. The guacamole was missing something, maybe lime, cilantro, or seasoning, it just tasted flat. My enchiladas had a strong, almost sour aftertaste from the green sauce. The rice was overly seasoned, and the beans were just okay. The red enchiladas didn't stand out either. It all felt like it was quickly thrown together, hoping the cheese and sauce would do the heavy lifting. For the price we expected much better quality. It was overpriced for what felt like cafeteria style food. That said, the host and waitress were friendly, attentive, and welcoming. So while the service was great, the food just didn't do it for us. read more

700TH REVIEW! Colina de Oro (Gold Hill) is an average run of the mill Mexican restaurant. For a Tuesday, it is the only place open to eat for many miles around, so in one regard it is good to have it here. As far as looks and ambiance, this place has seen its day and definitely needs a cleaning and fresh makeover. It looks very dated and a little ragged at the edges. The bar seemed quite active, and the rest of the place had a few patrons, but not many. Chips and salsa, plus water, was brought to the table right away. The salsa was good, chips mainstream. I also ordered a blended margarita, which was rather bland and lacked any punch or alcohol. It just tasted like lime punch. The menu is what one would expect and all the usual offerings. I decided to have the Chile Verde entree dinner, with rice, beans, and my choice of flour tortillas. The pork was OK, again nothing too special. All of it was middle-of-the-road Mexican fare. The service was friendly and cordial enough, yet seemingly bored. So, with that, if you're hungry on a Tuesday in this part of Amador County, this might be your only option. We stopped in for lunch after checking reviews which were positive. The service was inadequate - we had to get the waitress when we were ready to order . She wasn't with other customers as we were the only ones in there. She was standing at the counter on her phone! I always hoped the food would get better, like offering more American food choices (it's in a small town) and it would be nice if the owner wound acknowledge our patronage once in a while. This place used to be good. They developed a steady clientele, but the manager has run off most of his loyal customers. The food isn't as good, yet prices are ridiculous for small portions. If I'm going to pay $18 for an a la carte burrito then they could at least turn on the heat. One loyal customer complained about the cold air flooding into the place and was told by the boss that that he could leave if he didn't like it. It's too bad because the staff is lovely. At least they finally fixed the bathroom (after years) so that awful smell is gone. As soon as another decent option is available this place will be done. read more

Very disappointed with my dinner. Ordered Beef Taquitos, they were small flour tubes with what looked like mashed chicken, no flavor at all. My beans and rice were semi warm. Enjoyed the margarita but had a lot of ice. Our server never came back to check on us so when he brought the check I told him there was no beef in my taquitos. He made no explanation but said he'd take my meal off the check. He came back and it was off but he made no apology. My friends had no complaints so guess I ordered the wrong meal. This place immediately hits you with the dingey small-town-bar vibe when you walk in - not a lot of light and heaps of wood paneling. Staff are friendly enough for sure, but the food is way below average. Can't really see how any care is taken over any of it. No taste, no real effort. Needs a drastic remodel and reinvigoration. Party of 8 on a Thursday evening. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. It took at least 30 min for them to take our order. Notably, we had to get up and find the server and request they take our order. They just didn't seem to care. Food was just ok. Salsa tasted like Pace Picante and the enchilada sauce was most likely a can of Las Palmas. Food was overpriced and not worth it. Ambience was odd. Numerous returns over the year and a much overdue upgrade on my original assessment: this is delicious American-Mexican food and an essential dining option in an area without much in offer - especially in turns of Mexican food. My latest visit was during COVID. I could go on about how most of Amador County has continued on as if COVID is a hoax, but I think I'll stick to reviewing the food as that is what will keep me coming back. All the dishes here are stick-to-your-ribs delicious. Lots of beans, rice and fried goodness. The chicken tacos I enjoyed, filled with generous portions of savory meat, hit the spot after a long day in the sun. Pair it with their addictive tortilla chips and salsa and a beer and you have everything a hungry guy would need. The service seems to have gotten better each time. After having been to Colina de Oro only once before, Carly knew what I was getting to drink. She also knew my business partner's drink order. The drinks are perfectly mixed. Both meals I've had were excellent tasting. Great portion sizes. The nachos grande are a friggin meal in and of themselves honestly. The fajatias were full of flavor. The veggies in the fajatias were perfectly cooked and retained the crispness I look for in a dish of this nature. The other staff and managers I have encountered were all very very helpful and professional. We have had family events here and have been devoted customers for years but the last few times the food has been utterly terrible. The last time it made my uncle sick and this time we decided to try once more and picked up the food to take home to my elderly grandpa who loves this place. All of the meat was either dry or chewy and the beef in my taco tasted like cleaning product. We threw away nearly everything besides some beans and the chips and salsa. That's three meals in the trash, two of which they got wrong. When I called to inform them, the manager said we'd have to bring back the trashed items to get any sort of refund. That is unreal. We were camping at 49er RV park and decided to have a not cook night so we headed here. I actually called ahead to see if there was a wait, whicih is funny because they kind of laughed and said no. Sure enough just a few locals at the bar and we had a table of 6 in the dining room all to ourselves. Everyone ordered Mexican food and I decided to get crazy and ordered a burger. Hands down, best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to! With such a remote location, I stumbled upon this gem on the way back from Daffodil Hill and what a fabulous way to end the day that was! We started with delicious homemade chips and salsa(complementary, as they should be) and great house margaritas. Their dinner plates are very generous. We had tender and juicy chili verde/ chili colorado and super fresh and crispy taquitos. I must add that their taco salad is the best I've ever had - it's made slightly differently than your fast food restaurant version, and so much better. Plus, our server Victoria was great! She had a calm and collected vibe as she seemed to manage the whole dining room! She was very kind and quick to bring us our drinks/food/ refills. Next time you're passing by, be sure to stop in and give them a try! You wont be disappointed! read more

Been here many times in the past, and it was good. Yesterday, awful. Ordered cheese enchilada and relleno. The enchilada had molded cheese! If I had a STD it would have been a cure, thankfully, I don't. No Bueno, for a Mexican restaurant. Obviously the enchiladas are rolled ahead of time and placed in the walk in. We come here often and really enjoy it. Carne Asada tacos have great flavor, we love the chips and salsa, and the margaritas are delicious. We've also had enchiladas, chimichangas, nachos, and all different kinds of fajitas without disappointment. Pro tip: if you prefer your side of beans and rice to come with refried beans just ask :) otherwise pinto beans are what is usually served. After visiting 3 wineries we decided to stop here for dinner. When you walk in, you are thrown back in time to good times of the 50's of Dirty Dancing country club. The first thing you see is their full service bar. After drinking wine all day, you might want a drink. That time warp means the food is fresh and delicious. You know someone in that kitchen takes pride in their cooking. I had a southwest chicken without cheese or sour cream, add sautéed shrimp. The bell peppers were solid and crisps. The shrimp was fresh and juicy. The chicken was tender and juicy. The Mexican rice and beans perfect. Not a soggy item on my plate, like some Mexican places. All 8 of us just thought the food was amazing. We are in food comas... thank goodness I'm not driving home. Finally, our wIter was accommodating. We got separate checks. She took care of us like we were at her home. Even the owner of the restaurant came over to help with drinks etc. A great way to end the day with friends. read more
