We booked a river site 11/22-11/25. We stayed here during the summer, and couldn't wait to return. The campground is immaculate. The little shop that they have is cute. Unfortunately the staff that we have come across (other than groundskeepers) aren't very friendly. When returning from a hike, we forgot to put our paper on our windshield. We got the third degree from some woman that worked in the office. The car behind us was able to drive through the gate without issue (or a paper on their windshield). The same woman later sat in front of our camper in her golf cart for some reason. I didn't see her "check" on any other site near us. ***flash forward 2 hours*** We went for another walk to the museum across the street. When we were returning to the campground (on foot this time) the woman comes out AGAIN to ask if we're staying here! I can't help but feel super uncomfortable and unwelcome by being asked multiple times if we're staying here. I'm not so sure we're going to come back here. ***Edit*** We received an email from their manager Sherri, shortly after writing this review. She apologized for any misunderstanding and explained to us why they're so vigilant with their security. I've lived in the Bay Area for years and never heard of this campground. Such a nice campground. We had a spot on the river. The campground has cabins, trailer spots and tent spots. Great staff on phone and in person. Lots of activities. Two minute walk over bridge to historical sites, panning for gold etc. very clean sites and restrooms. I wish I could put no stars! My friends and I have been coming here every summer for years but after this years trip, we will NOT be coming back. I booked 2 cabins in January for a trip in July. I rented the same 2 cabins we had last year. The cost was over $800. July comes and we arrive at the "resort", I go to check in (because the reservations are in my name) and they tell me that I am already checked in. I tell the person at the counter, that no, I haven't checked in because I just got here! And she tells me that she let someone check in who told her we were like family. Well, what if that person was a stalker or enemy and is waiting in the cabin to gun me down?!?! Not a smart idea and besides it not being a smart idea, isn't it standard practice anyway, that the person who made the reservation is the person that checks in?? After I figure out that its not a killer who checked into my cabin I find out that the 2 cabins I rented are not the cabins that I am getting. I showed her my reservation confirmation that clearly showed which cabins I rented and she could have cared less about that, she didn't even look at it. So I am standing there waiting for her to tell me why my reservation was changed.......and I get a shoulder shrug and a blank look. So I take the 2 other cabins and cant help but see there is a very large group of teenage boys involved in some type of group activity in an area behind my 2 original cabins. It is obvious why I got the boot, more money. That group of teenage boys was much larger than my group of 16 and there event was catered, probably by the Argonaut, the restaurant associated with the "resort". Anyway, the boys went home at 10pm and never used the 2 cabins. The next morning I went to the office and asked if the 2 cabins would be available for the remainder of my stay. I was told "no" again with no explanation why. The 2 original cabins were vacant the entire time I was there. Besides the cabin switch with no notice at all, this resort charges too much for everything, the staff is rude, the bathrooms are not clean, they have TOO MANY RULES, it felt like I was at a summer camp for 12 year olds. I don't know why it happened or when it happened but this place has changed in a bad way. I suggest you check out some of the other river front cabins down the street from this place before spending your money here. read more

Some friends and I have been going here for years, but this year the customer service was for the birds! Between changing our campsite with no notice, the lack of understanding when one of us wanted to set up a small tent to sleep in (there was 16 of us there in two full-size cabins) because she got bedbugs after last year's trip, them trying to stop us from being dropped off by the shuttle driver from a whitewater rafting adventure, and the air conditioning units put in above the door with condensation dripping on our heads as we come and go, this place has seriously disappointed us! Before coming to Coloma Resort, I read a couple of the reviews so I know what to expect. Hubby and I are used to roughing it type camping, you know carrying 20-30 lb backpacks and hiking 6-7 miles to our campsite. Since our hands are full with a toddler, we have resorted to "car camping". Usual car camping spots we've been to are no frills type spots. Bathrooms would be hit or miss, zero shade, no electricity and absolutely no wifi. Well Coloma Resort is the epitome of "glamping". Here is what they offer: Cabins w/ air conditioning, some with bathrooms Clean Bathrooms and Showers Canopies over picnic tables Electrical Outlets General Store with stuff you may have forgotten at home Ice Cream Social Face Painting for the kiddos Swimming pool 2 playground areas Rope Climb Super Cute Cafe called the Argonaut outside of the resort Friendly Staff Last but not least....The American Freakin River! Just steps away from your site! We did tent camping and reserved spots #98-100 on the upper level. We booked in the spring and spots were very limited at the time. Pros on our site: close to a very remodeled bathroom, pretty quiet, less car traffic compared to the lower level. Cons: Yes they do have wifi but very spotty where we were. To get wifi, you have to be close to the general store. As others have stated the campsites are very close to one another. Luckily our neighbors were really friendly. For all you runners out there, myself, cousin and cousin's wifey did a 6 mile run. We woke up at the crack of dawn but started running at 6am when there was enough light to see where we were running. Our running started at camp and ran towards the entrance of the resort and hung a left. Went up a short hill and made a right on Burney Rd and from there, was just incline after incline. Once we got to the top, we turned around and made our way to the main road and ran a few more miles and headed back to camp before it got really hot, I definitely recommend coming here, very kid friendly and great for families. read more

Unfortunately after going to Coloma for the last 25 years, we won't be returning. We had reservations for a year (every year) and they told us, because of the COVID restrictions, we should list all of our guests coming up even if we are not sure they would make it. We've never done that before but wanted to respect their concerns for social distancing. They were not letting any additional guests in. So.... the three campsites listed the maximum just in case. No additional campers came. They charged us an additional $160 each after the fact. When we explained that no one else came up, they would not refund any of the monies. Told us to "read the fine print". So we cancelled our reservations for August 2021 and they charge us all $15 cancellation fee. We do understand these are strange times but overcharging and losing long time customers is not the way to do business. Shame on them. Edit: When I told them why I would not be coming back and wanted a refund. I received an email that said "excuse me? Didn't you get a refund?" I'm sure these are not the owners responding. read more

We don't camp, we "glamp" and are not ashamed about it. My family and I have been to a few KOA's and have enjoyed them. Considering the cost per night, I was hoping something better if not comparable than our usual KOA trip. The cabin we stayed in was quite nice. Very comfortable and clean. The website advertises wi-fi and on site activities as amenities. When I asked, how can I connect to the wi-fi after having trouble, I was told that the best way to connect to the internet was to stand by the general store and hang out there if we wanted to use the internet (FYI it works at poolside too). No cell service for AT&T. I was told if we needed anything to flag down the people on gold carts or calm some number. I never saw those people on golf carts and I had no cell service. So not sure how that works. Usually, when we do these types of trips, I don't see my kids very often. They make friends and are so busy with all the activities (that cost nothing), they just come back for meals. Not this time. I saw them all the time lol. Saturday had a few activities, though hardly anything was included in the cost (gold mining required you to buy a $15+ kit, wall climbing was $10/person, ice cream social $1-3). The ropes course is $50/person and you have to schedule in advanced. My teenage son said the basketball court was empty. Sunday was dead. My son went to ask for a schedule for Sunday and was told there are only activities on Saturdays! Tried to schedule some rafting for Monday and was told that the rafting place was closed on Saturday and Sunday (seriously?) and was told we needed to be out exactly at 11 so no point in asking, we could try some place else when we leave. The pool was small and murky looking. The playgrounds were cute but tiny. They enjoyed the river, it is very beautiful. We didn't see many people tubing or rafting. The store was okay. Everything was overpriced. $28 slippers. Firewood wasn't even free. Not very much in terms of necessities, we had to hit the gas station a few times. Also, it closed pretty early (7pm). We asked for more towels and were told we could buy some for $$. We had to rent a grill for $12/night, they don't come standard with the cabin. At one point on Sunday my kids were sitting on some benches with another family lamenting over how they didn't know what they should do because there was nothing to do. We ended up buying a $50+ game at the store...it was so cheaply made it broke after playing with it for 30 minutes. No refunds. It was really pretty, very quiet but not very entertaining. I may sound like a snotty princess that doesn't appreciate nature...when you are spending $350/night for a resort...there should be something to do everyday and give me some damn towels!!! read more

The place is perfect for an out of town getaway. So many things to do there. The river is spectacular for viewing or tubing. The customer service is outstanding. Hats off to Sherry for keeping our group all lined up with registration. Very calm place to be. The cabins are well kept and accommodated. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone. read more

Awesome family trip! We glamped in a South Fork Cabin. Right on the river. Well maintained. Super clean property. Easy access to a sweet little cafe. Pool. Beautiful lawn area by the river and little pools made with rocks for the kids to enjoy. Super friendly everyone. Great little playgrounds. Cons... it was SUPER HOT in August and some spots aren't shady, so if heat bugs you choose wisely. The river bank is a bit steep - had to keep the kids away from it. The sites were a bit close but I think that's the standard these days. Overall, we had such a great time that we booked the spot again for next year. Tip: bring bikes and light them up for night riding on the grounds! My son loved it. read more

Cons: All the spots are really really close together, your neighbors tent could be less than a few feet away. The place feels crowded no matter where you camp.The wifi is great as long as you are near one of the antennas,some of the sites near the river have horrible reception. If you have Sprint you will have no 3G or LTE. Pro's. The site is gorgeous right on the american river, great location.The campsites along the river are literally feet away and you can hear the water rushing all night. If you have a large rig there is a one lane bridge leading to the campsite that can get interesting if there is a lot of traffic. All the staff was super friendly. Bathrooms were clean all weekend and showers hot. All the sites have water and electricity, most of them have shade structures. The is a great glamping spot with lots of stuff to keep the kiddo's busy. Pool, play ground, hiking, etc. Well stocked store with whatever you forgot and they have ice cream. If you are doing a two day american river rafting trip this place is a good option to stay at. read more

Understandable, our Family reunion was cancelled due to the increasing smoke from the Placer County wild fires. However they refused to reimburse our reservation funds. They only offered a credit for future camping when available. Talk about "gouging" during a state emergency crisis, this fits the criteria. what if the resort burns down? We stayed at Coloma on our first camping trip. Sadly it did not live up to our expectations at all. It was our first trip... total newbies. In our excitement we got there to early by a couple of hours... so that's on us ... but after crossing a very narrow bridge to get there we were met by a very rude you g fellow (I wish I would have gotten his name to give him a special shout out... with the mask and all I can only say he had glasses? dark hair and full beard). He would not allow us in and fully expected us to back up in the narrow parking space and leave and come back after 3. We managed to get him to allow us to pull through to circle back and leave rather than backing up our first time with a line of cars behind us. So we found a shady spot up the street and waited. We came back at 3 in the 103 degree heat and attempted our first set up. I guess we weren't the only ones he managed to annoy as several other campers commented on his rude behavior. Add to that the bathrooms were covered in feces, the site itself was awful and to add insult injury they want $10 for a bag of ice. We won't be back and I hope they review their customer service and make it better for the next guy. read more

The Goodtimers RV Club of Modesto just spent 4 days at this campground and had a great time. The camp management worked with us to stay in line with Covid restrictions but we were still able to have a good time. The only complaint we have was our booking was a little tough. We found a good route to reach the campground was Lotus Road from Highway 50. We can't wait to get back when Covid is a thing of the past so we can enjoy all of the amenities here. read more

We had a great time camping here maybe one of our favorites! We were in site 90 up on the hill so had a little more privacy than some of the other sites, we had shade too which is a plus while camping in August. Grounds were clean, the roads were wide enough for us to turn and back into our sites. Lots of Amenities for the kids and the family! We enjoyed the shaved ice truck too! River was cold but so worth it! My only complaint was one of the staff members was extremely rude to us, but maybe just a miscommunication or he was having a bad day. ‍ All in all it was great and we will definitely be back. read more

This is one of my favorite camping destinations. The sites are nice and clean, full hook-ups available on the off river sites. There are plenty of clean bathrooms throughout the property and the showers are free! The river is a great place to cool off in the summer. It never fails to be in the high 90's during our annual trip. There is a pool which can get a little crowded.. but it's a nice alternative if you don't feel like the river. The store onsite carries a lot of items you may need or have forgotten. I've never had a bad experience with the employees inside or outside the office. The maintenance staff is also very friendly and willing to help. I look forward to my Glamping trip next summer. If you haven't been to Coloma before... this is a must visit. There is also James Marshall Gold Park within walking distance that has a lot of cool buildings and artifacts from the gold mining days. read more

We used to love this place until we stayed in their cabins. Our friends cabin was INFESTED with BED BUGS. Before we knew about the bugs, my friends son brought his blanket and pillow from the infested cabin to ours since our boys are best friends. Once the bugs were discovered I received a refund for one nights stay and the refund stated that we were leaving because of "bug bites" and because our friends were leaving early. "Bug bites"? Really? I have camped my whole life I can handle bug bites-what I cannot handle is bed bugs! I called several times and left messages. I then received an email from the manager. After speaking with the manager she refunded our entire stay because of our troubles - but stated it was because of "some sort of bug" in our cabin. I think they need to take responsibility for the fact that these are indeed bed bugs and my friends cabin should never have become that infested. If they were taking the proper measures and checking each cabin and cleaning them appropriately this would have never happened. So before we left, we had to bag up every single item we brought and treat everything including our car. They said our cabin had no bed bugs but now my baby has bites all over! I am so upset, stressed out, and disappointed. I wish I read the reviews prior to choosing Coloma Resort since there are previous reviews of bed bugs in the cabins. read more

Coloma Resort is awesome! The bunkhouse cabins are air conditioned, have private bathrooms and I'm allowed to bring my Great Dane so he can enjoy rafting the South Fork river too! We've stayed at Coloma Resort for three years in a row- such a great place to spend our annual rafting trip. The resort is clean and there are lots of activities for the kids and grown ups alike. Aside from rafting down the river, you can swim in the pool, fish, enjoy their social get-togethers (the ice cream social had delicious rainbow sherbet), ride your bikes around the area or go for a nice hike on the property. They also have a cute little store in the office with camping/rafting necessities, cute knick-knacks and gifts. We will definitely be back next year! The ONLY con to the resort: No cell service. They do offer wifi but the signal isn't strong and our phones would drop the connection or not connect at all. Aside from that, everything else is great! read more

Good tubing from one end of the resort to the other while drinking beers and relaxing, panning for gold, relaxing, the pool, magic shows, hanging out. Seriously, it is a great place. A very nice campground. You can tell that the owner takes pride in the place, as you can see him driving through the grounds at different times of the day. Not to mention, there was a problem with our reservation when we got to the resort, the owner stepped in and took care of us. The bathrooms are clean, so are the showers. The staff is friendly and the property is kept up nicely. NOTE: This is not the place for you, if you need to be in constant contact with technology. Cell-phone reception is at best: sketchy to non-existent, and the WiFi only works at the pool. I had a great stay at the Coloma resort, and look forward to my next visit. Also, just another lil note; it would be great if Coloma Resort also added a spa to their pool area. That would make it even nicer, in my opinion. This was our 2nd trip to Coloma Resort and we had a great time staying there but it was even better this time. If you want a place that is close by but not a million miles away from everything, then this is the place. We had a tent cabin for around $60 per night. The tent cabins are very economical especially if you have a larger group of campers as you can sleep about 10 people in one of these. Coloma Resort is located on the banks of the South Fork of the American River just across the river from the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. In the resort they have a General Store where you can find most of what you need without leaving the resort. They have tons of activities for the entire family so there is always something to do. Within the resort here is what they had to do in the 3 nights we stayed: * Root Beer Float Night * Outdoor Movies * Magic Show * Climbing Wall * Gold Panning Lessons * Dog Show * Face Painting * Balloon Art * Rafting Outside of the Resort you can do the following: * Visit the Marshall Gold Discovery Museum * Go for Pie at the Argonaut Refreshment Saloon * Go Hiking on the many trails * Picnic at the many shaded areas (with many picnic tables) * Visit the statue of James Marshall located above Coloma Valley * Make a day trip to the Gold Bug Mine located in Placerville about 8 miles away and go inside a real gold mine * Visit the Sutter Mill replica and the walk on the same place that James Marshall found the gold nuggets * Bike Riding * Etc. Overall this is one of our favorite places to go with your family. It's safe, clean, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. read more

This is about one of the nicest camp grounds I have stayed in, especially for families. They keep it well run, and clean. They have staff who are around for assistance. They have a nice store ,with ice, and whatever you truly need. They even deliver your bag. They have sites with large canopies, cabins, etc. They have children events, like face painting, and a live band, and even a ice cream truck, all on every Saturday, during summer months. They have a pool, and this awesome big round swing. It can fit like 4-5 kids on it. I wanted to try it, but there was always a kid on it. Damn! Thank you CR. Can't wait to see you all next year. Me and three other adults stayed here this past memorial weekend. We had a great time! We also had four dogs with us. I really liked how pet friendly the place was. We had RV site 13 which wasn't overlooking the river but had adequate amount of shade from trees and easily walkable to the river. The sites are pretty close together but everyone was very friendly and happy. It got loud at times but not very late into the night and we also had many of us all around us watching the NBA finals so that added to the excitement. The bathrooms were clean and your average spider/bug filled stall area. Not excessive though. This is the outdoors! The pool area was jam-packed with people during the daylight hours, it was high 90s the whole weekend. Lots of kids but nice area to cool off! I loved the general store, they had exceptionally cute and unique items in there. Including adorable shirts/shorts/pajamas/sweatshirts! They also had water shoes, water tubes, alcohol, and your usual miscellaneous camping stuff. Everyone working inside the store and outside of it was friendly! Happy people and helpful. The fact that it was gated and the campground was watched over made us all feel pretty safe. They had an ice cream social at nights which was awesome. They had it on a grassy area with a live bluegrass band playing. The ice cream was $1 a scoop and you needed to bring your own bowl/spoon. They also had face painting for the kids! You can ride the river down with your own tubes for about a 5 to 10 min ride if you get in right near the wedding/grassy area where the rapids start. Careful of hitting the branches and rocks! you can get off at the beach on the right hand side right after you go under the bridge. People lose a lot of things going down the river, including myself losing a water shoe (which I also recommend water shoes! It's rocky) so secure it best you can before hand. You will get wet. You can also take guided whitewater tours down the river just ask the general store! (Separate companies run the tours). They also have a "river float" ride that isn't as rough if you're nervous for the rapids or have young children. There's a nice little trail on the other side of the campground and of the bridge that runs along the river and meadow. Great for morning runs! This was such a fun place to come for the weekend. So many nice amenities, including the river and the great outdoors! read more

Security is top notch, keeping possible wedding crashers out! If you're on a budget and needing a cheap wedding place, this one should be on your short list. My family rented the two camping cabins, one on the upper and one on the lower level. We had a great time and really enjoyed taking the kids to the river and to the pool. The cabins were nicer than I expected and the bathrooms were cleaner than expected (upper level especially). The upper level is just nicer on all accounts. While we were situated in cabins, and didn't have to deal with the crowds, the lower level campsites were really packed in. Yes, you're right next to the river, but you're really packed in like sardines. Also, make sure you aren't next to the RV camping spots. If you can, book on the upper level. We hope to make this a family tradition. read more

We enjoyed Coloma Resort for 4 days in June 2019. We stayed in a cabin with bedroom and loft. It was the only cabin I saw there with no close cabins to it. It was new and had everything we needed. It also had a little yard. The kids enjoyed the pool, floating on the river and the shave Ice. We would like to go back some day. read more

Stayed in a tent cabin last night. Very clean. Nice bathrooms and very helpful and friendly staff . Very family friendly. Right next to the river. Coming back for sure. My one complaint is that quiet time which Is at 10pm is NOT enforced. I went to bed at 12:30 and then camp next to us was up all night drinking and being extremely obnoxious and loud. They kept me up until 3:30am. The guy that patrols at night drove by several times and did nothing about it. Great place but please take others into consideration read more

This is a review of both of my trips to the lovely Coloma Resort! I just came last weekend with a large group (19!) of family & friends, we stayed in the last campground site just past the auditorium. It's the best site on the whole camp grounds and the staff there is simply the best. Fred & Sherry came and checked up on us several times to make sure everything was okay, and the staff workers were always available to deliver us tons of bags of ice and bundles of wood. The bathrooms are very clean and the campgrounds in general are clean and well kept. There are plenty of lagoons to relax and lounge on a raft or innertube or even just plop some chairs down and thrown back some cold ones! Everything is reasonably priced at the front store area, definitely no price gouging going on here, $1 bottles of water and they even sell all you need for S'Mores! We will definitely make a 3rd and many more annual trips to Coloma Resort. I would also say it is very kid friendly as well, even though we didn't bring any, there were plenty of kids having a great time there! 5 Stars all the way! P.S. - I'm not a big techie/cell phone guy, but some of my friends are, and unless you have Sprint you will have NO service up there! read more

Stayed in Cabin J. Pro's: Cabin was clean and well stocked. Grounds were fair. Pool was small, but clean. Lot's of play area's for the kids. Really close to the river, although only saw one access point that was really small. (May have been another access point to the river that we didn't discover). Close to lot's of historic sites and other activities, Gold Mining, Rafting, etc. Very kid friendly. Campground had activities on Saturday. (Band, Ice Cream Social, Face painting). Also a couple play area's for the kids. Staff and other campers were very friendly, with the exception of one staff member that wasn't as warm and friendly. Con's: Kitchenette was tiny with no counter space. Our cabin was at the front, so there was some traffic and noise. Camp ground seemed a little crammed with a lot of big RV's. On our last day we noticed a very substantial leek under the kitchen sink. Asked for an extra hour on our check out and were denied. All in all, it was okay and fairly priced for a summer weekend. Cheap prices, very clean place right next to the river. A lot of activities for the kids to do. Rock wall climbing, swimming pool, face painting,you name it! Highly recommended.. read more

This place is so beautiful! The camp sites were clean. Staff were super nice. But the view was extraordinary!!! We were at camp #42 right on the river. Our trailer door was facing the river. There are some steps leading to the river. Just amazing! read more
