I've been going to Colonial Cafe for the past 10 years. The past few years have been extremely dissapointing. It used to be a great breakfast and a great dinner place, but the past two years, the eggs have come cold, they don't taste as good and the presentation is horrible! The chicken quesadillas are still ok but the Salmon dinner with pesto, which was excellent, went down the tubes in a huge way. I'm sorry i didn't take a pic of it, but 2 days ago I ordered it and they brought me an end piece that looked disgusting. I couldn't eat it. They used to serve it with a choice of rice but they eliminated the rice. Hmmm. Not going back there. The waiters are great but the hosts (both of them) are extremely cold and arrogant. Can't put my finger on why but nevertheless, they're just plain rude. I'll be going down the road to Alexanders. Don't waste your time or money! read more

Food: My Impossible burger was tasty the sautéed onion made the sandwich. My grandson didn't want to eat his pizza. I took one of the pieces to taste it. It was like eating cardboard with tomato sauce on it. Service: The young man was nice and professional. Ambiance: there was some sorta yucky smell in the air. I couldn't place it. The name is Colonial Cafe there was nothing in the decor that had to do with the Colonies. Also they don't provide anything like paper placemats with games or crayons to help keep the kids occupied while waiting for their food. read more

Good old colonial. Drove up and down route 64, but nothing really caught our eye, so we wound up at right back where we started. Good comfort food. Great service And a true family tradition. Our server was excellent. Such a nice guy; so genuinely friendly and attentive. I ordered the Reuben sans the sauce, but it was still a little mushy, wet and a tad too salty. I love Reuben's; this one wasn't my favorite, but it was good. Onion rings were ok. J ordered the oreo shake which he polished off, so I'm thinking he liked it. It looked thick and tasty. I liked the big thick straw that came with it. Definitely a place to come with the grandparents or to come and wind down from a game, or school event with the entire family. There were lots of sweet families out on the town getting their ice cream on... Tempting looking desserts. I wish I would have had room. read more

This is one of those places you're going to say you miss soooooo much one day! Even if you've never been here. The food is all good, it's very familiar, service is very good, and they even have a ton of ice cream dessert options. If you grew up anywhere in the Fox Valley, Colonial Cafe is in your DNA. As far as I know, they're not going anywhere, but as this Covid junk starts to clear up, take a moment to stop in for BK, brunch, lunch, or dinner. I've been to Colonial so many times in my life- but this is the location I've visited the fewest number of times- but it is one of the only ones left. When we arrived on a weekday night, they were clearly short-staffed as there was a bit of a wait despite many empty tables. We didn't mind waiting the about 10 minutes for the server to have a proper number of tables. My friend ordered just dessert- a milkshake- and it came in the traditional glass along with the large silver container- he was thrilled with how much ice cream it was. I had two of my favorite Colonial dishes- the chicken caesar salad and the PBF Chipper. I love that Colonial really updated their menu but also kept a lot of their classics. Both my salad and PBF chipper were just as delicious as I remembered from childhood. On our visit our server was excellent- very efficient and friendly and checked in a perfect number of times. The bathrooms and tables were clean as well. I'll definitely come back sometime if I am in the area. read more

I ordered the meat loaf and it looked good but the tiny portion of mash potatoes that accompanied it was highly inadequate and prevented the meal from being balanced. I asked if this was normal and then my waiter Andrew got super defensive and only after forcefully insisting was I able to talk to the active manager Maria who acted like I was completely out of line lasking for an appropriate amount of starch with my protein. Overt very insulting I am truly offended. Looks like decent food but not paired well and the service means I won't be returning! read more

Colonial is a DISGRACE. Do restaurant owners not go eat at a competitor's place nearby to compare the experience to what he/she offers? Within a stone's throw of colonial there are the other 2 east side coffee shops......BOTH are extremely expensive, as is Colonial, BUT both of the others serve a meal that would feed a horse. Huge portions by comparison. I just ate breakfast at Colonial only because i was in a hurry, and hadn't been there in years, so what the hell. { i've lived within 2 miles of Colonial for 35 years and have been there twice based on their not so hot reputation ]. The cost was the same at the other 2 places....outrageously expensive. You know what i mean.....Inflation rose 11% since Covid and ALL restaurants raised their prices 30% , you know that's true. The place is dank. Gray carpet that at best looks dirty and worn. GRAY booths, BLACK trim....did they even TALK to a marketing person before they did that? No restaurant should/would do that. The Eggs were COLD...the sausage is odd tasting at best, NO POTATOES......WHAT? Even crummmy Denny's served potatoes with breakfast...BTW, they just went out of business. I guess i am hard to please. I expected a warm, edible, breakfast in pleasant surroundings for my $15 plus tip. And while i'm at it i didn't appreciate the electronic checkout asking if i wanted to leave a 25% tip, or 20. or18. I love coming to this place, great customer service, very nice cozy place. They have so many awesome breakfast selections and one of my favorite is their classic French Toast! I've gone to so many different breakfast restaurants but Colonial Cafe has the best French Toast I've ever had. You really have to try it and you will always come back for more! After we saw a show from the arcada, we found this place to eat. My dad has liked this place for a long time so the rest of us decided to try it out. Our food was really good. The cheese curds were really good and my chicken pot pie was amazing. The ice cream sink was the best part and the 4 of us were able to finish it. Would come back again. read more

I came in this morning with my son and did not want Tia as a server because she does a terrible job and she always started drama at a past job we shared . I asked the host kindly to give me a different server, we sat down and then I continue to hear tia saying things to the people in the back about me. I heard how I was a "unmentionable name" She was upset because I wanted a different server... we just did not want to feel uncomfortable that's all! She greeted the table and slams The Waters down and said our server would be right with us very rudely. Edit: 7/7/17 Colonial management has made great efforts to right this wrong. They will continue to be one of my favorite breakfast locations. This review is strictly for their takeout services... I want to preface this by saying I love the food at Colonial. We have breakfast there almost every Sunday. Dining in, you receive great service, but their takeout is severely lacking. The last three times we've ordered take out, they've forgotten significant portions of our order. Sometimes we receive a quick "sorry", sometimes we don't.. Today was the worst... We ordered a biscuits and gravy meal and a pancake meal. They forgot the sausage, bacon, gravy, and hash browns - plus the butter/syrup for my pancakes and silverware. I also ordered pecan pancakes (as I almost always do). They clearly made my pancakes wrong and forgot the pecans. Instead of remaking them they just threw some in the container. So disappointed in this place. read more

First, I have eaten here many times. The food has always been good. Not fantastic, but good. What I witnessed today will make me think twice about going back. I walked in to order carry out. The hostess/waitress already seemed frazzled by the people waiting to be seated, waiting to pay their bill and the phone ringing. I eventually ordered my food. After a while, the food was ready and she brought it up to the counter where she set it down, mumbled something and then walked away to help the people waiting to be seated and others to pay their bill. After a few minutes, she returned to finish my order. Right in front of me, she licked her fingers to select a bag, pack my food, with the same hand, then play with her dirty phone then said she would be right back because she had to get my toast..... where I watched her grab my toast with the same hand that she licked and touched her dirty phone with (and the register and touchscreen and people's credit cards). She didn't even seem to care or perhaps understand that what she was doing was terribly unhygienic. Gross. read more

The food here is good, and the service is normal. I'd say it's good 8/10 times? Normally everything is fine but I had to wait an hour just to get a sandwich (it was the wrong sandwich, too)... I still recommend, though. Michelle P is the best waitress/waiter there in my opinion. read more

My wife and I stopped in for breakfast. It was our first time at this location. The service was great Tia was our waitress and she was awesome. The food was great tasting and very affordable. I had a great conversation with one of the Anderson Brothers he gave me some background on the history of the business which was really nice to hear. I ran across Colonial Cafe after checking the St. Charles Visitor's Bureau website. This might sound like a strange way to discover a restaurant, especially coming from a person obsessed with Yelp, but that's how it happened and I'm thankful for it. The overall star rating is not indicative of my experience at all, so had I found this on Yelp - I might have missed out on a true gem. My mom, sister and I made it in for an early lunch. There were a few tables, but it wasn't very busy at the time. We were greeted promptly and given a break down on the menu and specials. My mom and I had already scoped out the menu and planned on ordering the 2 for $20. I went with the Cuban sandwich and my mom went with the Patty Melt. We were able to pick our sides instead of just being stuck with fries, so I went for the mac and cheese. (I think there was a bit of an up charge, but it wasn't much.) The wait for the food was about standard but our server kept checking up on us and bringing us refills. She was very attentive and sweet. My cuban sandwich was perfect, although it was a little smaller than I thought it would be. The bread was crunchy and the meat and cheese inside were delicious. It was a little spicier than I expected, so I wiped off some of the spicy mustard. I loved the pickles that came on it too. My mac was super cheesy and tasted really good. I got to steal a few nibbles of my mom's patty melt and thought it was divine. I love the fact that it was on marble rye bread. Her fries were average. Although lunch was my mom's treat, she thought that the dessert was too expensive. I really wanted one anyway though so I decided to order it and pay for it myself. I'm so glad I did! I ordered the coffee toffee sundae because it sounded amazing. The coffee ice cream was delicious and the sundae was really chocolately. It was big enough to split with my mom and sister too, so it was worth the money. When it came time to pay the bill, we were confused by the total price because a lot of places ring up 2 for $20s as $10 each, but this actually had the full menu price on the bill. Once you go up to the register is when they take off the difference. We asked our waitress and she was quick to explain the process. This is a great little cafe or lunch spot and I highly recommend it to anyone that's going to be in the area. This is one of my favorite diners in St. Charles. Colonial is a great place for after a football game or lunch with some friends. Definitely somewhere you can take the family! I had for lunch the half chicken sandwich with a bowl of cheddar chowder. The sandwich had cut up grilled chicken, cheddar, honey mustard, tomatoes, and bacon, it was really good! I love the creamy thick cheddar soup as well! My boyfriend had the bbq pork macaroni and cheese. I thought the macaroni and cheese was delicious but there was too much bbq sauce on it. I think the bbq sauce should have only been on the meat versus the entire meal. Their ice cream sundaes are so much fun! Kids absolutely love them! The best thing to get at Colonial with a bunch of friends is their ice-cream kitchen sink. Such a fun thing to do and eat! read more

When we entered the restaurant waiting area the carpeting was filthy and it didn't get any better in the dining area. Time to replace it! It also made me wonder if the kitchen is just as dirty. The tables are beat up and need to be refinished. I would have left but the group I was with didn't want to go anywhere else. I am actually glad we did stay because the food was very good and there is a lot of variety from which to choose. Something for everyone. The staff is friendly and the service was good. Okay, so I've been here a boatload of times, and only now felt the need to review it. Colonial was THE place to go after band concerts, school plays, football games, school dances, etc. in elementary school, middle school, and high school. However, up until this past week, I hadn't been to a Colonial in years. Man, things have changed. It's still awesome and brought back lots of memories, but they've definitely kept up with the times. I'm happy they still have the fake cloud ceiling, and the black and white animals and St. Charles historical pictures on the wall. But, there menu has been updated quite a bit. I came here twice with a friend of mine this week who was in town from Florida for the first time in 6 years. She wanted to go someplace that they don't have in Florida, and so I suggested Colonial, which she was excited about because she hadn't been there in those 6 years. On the first day we went there we both got the strawberry lemonade (free refills!) which is PHENOMENAL! So much better than the crappy strawberry lemonade I got at On the Border a few weeks ago. This stuff tasted fresh, and the strawberries were amazing. I think they use the same strawberries they use as an ice cream topping...they're real strawberries, but they have a sweet juiciness to them. So good. She also ordered one of the Chipper sundaes, and a chicken quesadilla, which looked really good. April is 50 cent ice cream cone month, so I got a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone for less than a buck. Awesome deal, and the ice cream did not disappoint. Yesterday she had to leave to go back to Florida, so we went to Colonial again for breakfast. We each ordered the strawberry lemonade again, and she got a side of their homestyle potatoes (which the portion was a bit small, I thought), and I got their hashbrowns. So good. She also made her own Tulip sundae. I also ordered 2 pancakes, which isn't actually on the menu, but they'll give you anyway. Each of our potato orders were $1.99, and my 2 very large pancakes were like $2.49 or something. Not a bad deal. I was going to get another 50 cent cone, but I was too full after the massive size pancakes and hashbrowns. I forgot how awesome this place is. I will definitely attempt to bring back the Colonial tradition among my friends. I just wish they served margaritas or something - then it'd be much easier to convince my friends to come again. read more

The table had the following: - The meatloaf was very impressive. Outstanding flavor and juicy. Loved the onion and green peppers. - The Tuscan Turkey Sandwich was fantastic. The tomato ciabatta bread was soft and full of flavor. The pesto mayo was perfect and the bacon was so crisp I ate half of it right of the sandwich. - My kids had 4 cheese macaroni and cheese (So good he wanted to get another to take home) and Mini Hamburgers. The meat was flavored well and they were bigger then regular sliders. He didn't leave any behind. Unfortunately, we were so happy with dinner we didn't leave room for the 2 pages of amazing desserts. My Family and I went to have dinner here after we saw the Larsen light show in Elburn IL. Cute cafe with a large menu of ice cream desserts, you can order breakfast and dinner offerings. The restaurant has decoration of old milk shake machines and pictures from long ago. My mom got the shrimp with quinoa, my sister the meatloaf, I had the burger, kids had grilled cheese, and crepes. We enjoyed our meals and the service was excellent, stopped by our table to check in and make sure everything was okay. read more

Had the best experience this morning for breakfast. Service was OUTSTANDING! Fast, friendly staff all wearing masks. We were running short on time and ended up asking for the check when the food arrived and our server was so kind! He let us pay on the spot at the table, got us to go coffee cups and a to go box!! This place has a TON of food to choose from. I went because it was convenient to my hotel and I am glad I did. Based on another review, I chose the loaded potatoe pancakes and eggs for dinner. I've known about this place for years and went for the first time tonight while visiting St Charles. Wow! The food was fantastic. Chicken fried Chicken and pulled pork Mac n cheese. So good. I regret not coming here sooner and will for sure go the next time we are in town. read more

The home cooked meals are incredible!! The Meatloaf and Chicken pot pie are two of our favorite, but there are really too many to mention. My grandson's favorites are the famous chicken tenders and the BBQ pork mac & cheese. Whenever the family comes over, they can't wait to have one of Colonial's wide range of exceptional "Chipper" desserts; everything from Strawberry Field, Oreo Obsession, Mint Fudge Oreo and more. Colonial Café has definitely helped us get more visitors coming over to "help" us with our move. They come hungry and leave with a smile.
