It's exciting to see the new items on the menu. These are being tested in the St. Charles restaurant their wonderful multi-unit manager, Rick Rittgarn, tells me. All Colonial restaurants are creating new items (or are in the process of doing so) that are so healthy and I, for one, am on board with that! Their bread is now homemade! Such a disappointment...they just changed their hours this week and though we walked in 15 minutes prior to close we were told that we would not be served. We have been coming here for over 20 years. Great diner food, can't beat the ice cream desserts! Try the chicken tenders, real chicken and real good. Came in with family friends and their five children at 10pm they still happily served us with a smile even though we went about 10 minutes into closing time. So this colonial cafe has been renovated and and they did a great job. The place has a good modern look with nice fixtures and yet still offers that typical retro feel common at colonial cafe with wall decor and collectibles from 1900.....making it a cozy quiet place for two and also totally fun for a group. It offers good meeting spaces and caters to all ages. So food wise I have to say this place has a very nice food both in presentation and taste. I have visited several times and have not been disappointed once. The servers are polite and really pay attention yet not overbearing.... (Like that server who comes to your table every two minutes to ask if you need anything..haha.). Any way the food is very affordable and you can get a great bite for less than 10$. Warning; the Portion sizes in the pictures are way smaller so prepare to be amazed by the huge portion sizes you actually get -can be a +/- depending on your tummy you can ask for kid size portions too. I recommend the chicken vesuvio... Really yummy and they have a new one BLTea served on thick wheat bread but you can ask for thin white bread... Ya the EA is for egg and avocado. And the hot chocolate is really good some of the best I have ever had. So there...if you are looking for a simple but elegant place to hangout enjoy a good time with family, friends, or that special some one you just met... Went there for some dinner and just couldn't resist the PBF Chipper Sunday. So I skipped my meal and ordered two of these peanut butter towers. Once my spoon hit the creamy center the peanut butter splattered on my shirt "oops". At this point I didn't care because boy was my eye on the Reese's peanut cup and cherry. I moved here from California and the first place that I ate out with my dad was here. We were driving by and we randomly stopped and I'm so happy that we did. the service was great the manager even came and introduced himself to me and my dad which was awesome. The food was amazing I loved it. breakfast food is my favorite meal of the day and this place was extraordinary and my Dad loved it too and still talks about it to this day. Last minute choice to go here. We wanted breakfast food but it was late in they day and they serve breakfast all day. I haven't been to a Colonial since I was maybe 10. So it's been a while lol! Maybe my expectations were higher. I LOVED this place as a kid. Hello! Oreo cookie mouse dessert! But maybe that is the thing... I think we only went here for the ice cream. This place is a diner. I'd say on the grand diner scale, I'd rather visit Denny's. :( We were walked to a dirty table with melted ice cream on the seat and food on the table. They did clean it promptly because even the next table where we were almost seated was also dirty. Food wasn't great. Hash browns tasted odd. Waitress was nice. This one of our favorite spots for Sunday brunch. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, fast service and the food is delish. Their breakfast dishes are good, but my fave dishes are the fish tacos or chicken tenders. Both are delicious, fresh and nicely plated. I always get a raspberry iced tea and sometimes, one scoop of their chocolate mint ice cream if I have room. Never disappointed. They make the best homemade cornbread too! read more

We needed a quick dinner and our 7 year old granddaughter wanted ice cream before her gymnastics class so we decided to settle on Colonial Cafe. Our expectations for the food was not high... We were unexpectantly surprised at how good the food actually was. We had a BLT with avocado and fried egg that was delicious along with a Southwestern Salad with chicken that was made with the freshest is ingredients! Of course the ice cream sundaes were yummy, expected nothing less. Our server was a lovely young lady named Holly who was so sweet. When she saw our granddaughter playing 'waitress' at the table, she gave her an order pad to take orders with that delighted this 7 year old like it was Christmas morning! If you want to eat somewhere where and watch the cooks eat while they prepare your food, this is the place for you. I went there with my son for breakfast a couple weeks ago and while we waited for our food, I noticed the cooks putting food in their mouths while cooking. There's nothing more gross than seeing them out a plate up on the service table while chewing on food. I mentioned this to the manager and he was rude and didn't even care. I will not go back Update**** A lady from their corporate office called me a couple of days later after I posted something on their website. She was very nice and apologized for this incident. She offered to give me a few vouchers for a free meal as compensation. After a month, I still haven't received the vouchers. I guess she was kidding about the vouchers. My apologies to the Colonial Café, for the slight lag time for this Yelp, but now here I am with some positive feedback! This locale has been here for some time, and it has been some time since I sampled their food. The menu has gone through some updates, for the times, and another teacher who lives in the area joined me for an early dinner. It was nice to see the friendly service was still intact. It was also nice to see that Colonial Café is still giving back to the community: the date of our visit coincided with a fundraiser for a little girl with a brain tumor. And as for the food: my friend didn't blink before ordering the meatloaf. It isn't just any meatloaf: it is old fashioned meatloaf jazzed with onion, creamy cheese, garlic mashed, and bedazzled with onion crisps on top. Piping hot and the plate was huge! I decided on the chicken bruschetta; charbroiled with diced tomato, basil, garlic, and instead of a ton of oil, it was whisked all over with a light balsamic vinegar. Roasted reds and wonderful grilled veggies too. It was very good. I wish we had been able to stay for dessert (their fountain creations are cool) and the charitable event (people were already showing up); but we had enough time to give back, enjoy our meal, and decide that the next time would be for breakfast! read more

Had a bad experience this last weekend :-/. First our waitress seemed to be running ragged! I do not know if she had too many tables or what the deal was but she wasn't available when we needed her. Second, I got the wrong sandwich, no big deal things happen. Third, when I did get my chicken cheddar sandwich it had hardly any chicken on it. They did take the sandwich off the bill but still.... I had fries for lunch because the sandwich took too long and my son was done eating by the time mine came out. So I had a bread and cheese sandwich to eat later (because there was hardly any chicken on the sandwich). Won't be coming back to this location. read more

For 15 years I ran a business in St Charles and would have lunch at Colonial twice a week. It's been 15 years and wanted to share a memory with my grand children and went there for lunch today! The old Colonial has expanded, but that's about all the good I can say about Our experience. As my granddaughter said her cheeseburger was just ok. I had the tuna sandwich and so disappointing. My other granddaughter had the Mac and cheese and it looked like it was dumped from a box! Yuk! The final insult was the electronic bill that only offered 18, 20, 25% tip option on the bill that include tip on the sales tax! You had to go to a custom tip to leave a 18% tip without sales tax. What a disappointment. So many restaurants in St Charles so pass on Colonial, it was sad the old Colonial has come and gone! read more

Colonial Cafe is located in a neighborhood shopping center across the street from Kane County Fairgrounds. There is plenty of off-street parking. I met some friends for breakfast on a Sunday morning and they were able to accommodate our group of ten. I ordered a veggie omelet, hash browns, toast and coffee. The bill was just shy of $11.00. Good, basic diner food in a contemporary-ish setting. The fireplace is a nice touch. The greeter/hostess had a big smile and was pleasant. The food was good, however, I have to ding them one start for bringing out the appetizer and the entree at the exact same time with just a casual remark of "oh they made it all at once." Didn't send anything back for timing purposes for fear of it sitting under the heat lamp and drying up. The Colonial Cafe special meatloaf was quite good, as were the mashed potatoes, but we didn't really dig very deep into the appetizer (Macho Nachos) because everything was brought out at once. I'm so happy this place is right around the corner from my house! My family and I have been making it a habit to hit this place a few times a month for breakfast. They have a great menu with a little bit of everything to suit any kind of appetite. Their " specialties " on the menu are crazy good; from the loaded baked potato pancakes to their bacon mac n cheese melt! The prices are fair and the portions are a very good size. What really stands out about this place is the exceptional service and TV's in every corner that feature sunday morning football. I'd suggest the cinnamon roll french toast or the loaded potato pancakes, those are outstanding! Also, if you have a little bit of room in your belly, try the " Kitchen Sink " for desert! I usually don't give out four star reviews too restaurants like this, but I have to say I could find no fault with Colonial Cafe. My memories of this place come from childhood, when my family would come here after dance recital at the Norris Center. Obviously, it's been awhile since I came back, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the entire restaurant had been renovated. Now, wood shiplap covers the walls, and the old fireplace has been covered in new stone work. Well the changes don't put Colonial Cafe into the trendy category, they do make a difference. The service here with nothing but a tentative. We had a great waitress, who checked in with us often. The manager himself even came over to see if we were enjoying our meal. I appreciated the personalized attention. When it came to the food, Colonial Cafe produces your typical Diner fare. The menu is expensive, and you get exactly what you expect when your plate arrives at the table. Although to be honest, I would rank the food I had at Colonial Cafe over that of Egg Harbor or Lumes in Geneva and Batavia, respectively. That is why I am giving Colonial Cafe 4 stars. read more

We eat here every now and then. Service is usually good and food quality is consistent. Old school pay your bill at the counter. Not sure what's going on with the lighting changing colors all the time. I think it's weird. This is their flagship location as their corporate offices are across the street. Other locations are pretty normal. The Elgin location could use a make over as its old. Check out anything from their breakfast menu or for lunch, try the grilled chicken panini with cheese and bacon. Good stuff. If you can handle it, get the ice cream. I went there for breakfast. Food was as expected. My only criticism is despite being served quickly after I ordered it, it just wasn't hot enough. Was on a business trip and the cafe is right next to Best Western Inn where we stayed. My colleague and I were drawn to this place by the kitchen sink sign outside of the restaurant and we ended up ordering it. The two of us could hardly finish half of the sink but...we liked the look of the ice cream and we liked the very friendly staff who kept cheering us up to finish the sink.
