Took my yearly Good Friday drive out to Colonial Candies today for Easter Candy! Very sad to see the sign on the door which said they were "closed for good." Wish they had posted this online. Will miss coming here for holiday sweets and ice cream. They had delicious chocolate and I will dream about their chocolate covered Oreos. So sad no one took over. Colonial Candies, located in Bolton MA, is the original Hebert Candy that was lo cated on Rt 20 in Shrewsbury many years ago. This business has the original Hebert Candy recipe that they own and took with the when they moved. The Candy Mansion on Rt 20 has their own recipe and continues to sell under the name Hebert. When the Hebert family sold the Rt 20 mansion they changed their name to Colonial candies. Colonial Candy is delicious and still carries all the old, famous candies. They also have an ice cream bar with homemade toppings. I bought a box of milk chocolate vanilla butter cremes and they are delicious melt In your mouth. I'll go back before Easter to get chocolate bunnies and cream filled Easter eggs. Give them a try at Easter and remember how good Hebert chocolate really is! read more

We lived in Central Massachusetts for a decade before we moved to Connecticut so we were very familiar with Hebert Candies, especially the fabulous Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury. The brand is still alive and well, and we visited one of their stores in Bolton, MA on the way home from New Hampshire. The store is loaded with every variation and permutation of chocolate under the sun -pops and bars, and truffles and barks, etc. We picked up half a dozen items a chocolate dinosaur pop, a bag of lollypops, a chocolate bar, a box of sugar free toffee squares, two chocolate covered Oreos and a piece of chocolate bark. Here's two stories - we didn't see any bark out on the shelves, and when we mentioned it to the sales clerk she said she had a fresh batch in the back, so she ran back there, broke off a hunk, priced it and wrapped it up for us. That was nice. I was struck by the many different variations of chocolate covered Oreos -we picked up milk and dark chocolate versions. I just read a 2019 article that said Richard Hebert makes the covered Oreos  in the store's basement where he "single-handedly, makes 1,000 a day". That is beyond cool, isn't it? read more

The dark chocolate nut turtles were old, dry, and tasteless. This place uses vanillin and soy instead of vanilla, butter, and cream. Everything is pre-boxed and bagged. None of them had sell by dates. They were not fresh. I regret spending $40 on items I will just throw out. read more

We used to stop in here every year as party of our apple picking tradition. We love the Halloween decorations, the ice cream, the friendly service, and taking our time to shop the candy. Unfortunately, that is no more. I brought the grand kids here after missing last year's apple picking. It was so disappointing. Mostly empty shelves (the ones with stuff were all brand name candy from the grocery store) and no decorations at all. Lots of Easter candy (only 6 months old) and some Christmas decorations they were selling. Now it just looks like an unkept, old, creepy house. Not to mention the service? Absolutely awful. Both employees were rude and made sure to remind us multiple times they were closing soon-in 30 minutes. It was very sad and very disappointing to see a place that was once long standing family tradition fall to the wayside. Obviously the employees are unhappy with whatever new management is in place and it makes for a bad experience. Unfortunately our last experience in the store was a bad one. read more

I found Colonial Candies by accident so long ago I don't remember when. So when I pulled off the highway for gas and saw their sign, I was so excited! Then I saw a for sale sign right by theirs, and I was confused. What could have happened? Thankfully the nice gas station attendants corrected me and explained the for sale sign was for houses down the same road, Colonial Candies is certainly still there. (It was an emotional whirlwind, thank you for reliving it with me.) I was there before Halloween, and it was amazingly festive! Blow ups outside, silhouettes upstairs, and pumpkins everywhere. They had plenty of chocolate, gummies, and various other sweets for sale. The chocolate is smooth and has so many varieties, it's great for individualized presents. There was also an ice cream counter where I got a refreshing chocolate shake for the rest of the drive. There looks like there was a sundae bar but closed.... I suspect we can blame Covid. There is a sit down area to eat your ice cream, and a restroom in the store. read more

Wish it were still called Hebert's! In the 1960s and '70s, we frequently visited our grandparents at their house in New York and cottage in New Hampshire. There was ALWAYS a closet full of Hebert's candy. In fact, we caught grandma inside the closet once, and asked if she was getting out the Heberts, and she said "oh my, I forgot they were in here" - the only time we ever heard her lie. One regret, though. We stopped at Colonial a few months ago and could NOT find my favorite Hebert's treat: those pastel buttery mint disks. I have even tried, unsuccessfully, to make them. First time coming here and the selection was decent for a candy story. Was a bit disappointed of the appointment of premade candies (IE stuff not made in house like nerds rope, gummy foods, ect) which took up half the space. The other side had a good selection of chocolates to choose from that varied in prices for $4-$30 depending on what you're looking to get. Most likely won't be stopping here again as I didn't have anything truly outstanding. Cute shop to stop into if you're driving past and have a sweet tooth. We didn't have any issue with service but there was only 1 person working which made the checkout process a bit slow as they had to switch from ice cream and cashier. read more

no one greeted us we were starting our vacation, going down 495 & heading to Niagra Falls, when we saw the very lovely sign for Colonial Candy & Ice Cream. what a great and inviting sign! it begged for us to visit. so we made the decision to put the effort into swinging in on our way back to Maine. we looked online at the website, saw the vast array of candy options & discoved there was a SUNDAE BAR! oh it was the hook! we were for sure stopping in! after a 6 hour drive, and discussing our plan of attack on that sundae bar, we finally arrived!! we were the only customers at that time, walked right over to the bar (I tried to catch the eye of the young worker behind the counter to smile or elicit a greeting, but they were busy doing whatever) I stated to my friend "here it is!" there were containers along the bar, so I lifted a lid & saw it was filled with some sort of chocolatey goodness... oh boy! this is exciting. my friend says "let's look around first & then we will get a sundae." cool, we peruse at the place amazed at the selection options. picked out a wee box of treats & headed over to the counter... at this point another young worked had joined the quiet one. she gave me a waify HI... Went here honestly by accident. My daughter was getting cranky and we just pulled off on the first exit possible. Upon exiting, we saw this sign and figured, meh.. why the heck not? It was around Halloween and they had suitable decorations up which made it rather festive. I honestly don't know why people only give this a 3 as it wasn't designed to be the "world's best" or some sort of amazing attraction. It's a candy shop. It does exactly that - it sells amazing candy (and ice cream). The customer service was extraordinary and it's as simple as that. Is this a place that is jaw dropping enough to make a ridiculous journey out of? Probably not. However, if you're local and have a sweet tooth? Oh yeah. I am basing this review on milk and dark chocolate, but first... Sugar Road? Adorable location. Okay... the dark chocolate was too hard and not nearly rich enough. And the milk chocolate seemed a little stale. These were boxed chocolates so I don't know how long they were sitting in the box but they were recently purchased so if they were sitting in the box for a long time, that's the shops fault. I was not in the shop and didn't purchase the chocolates myself, so I cannot comment on ambience and service, but the shop IS conveniently located off of I-495. read more

I really can't deal with the mask police. We walked the entire store ALONE. Never welcomed. Never "Hi!" The store was pretty empty as far as actual candy. It was a lot of empty baskets and bins, but I figured just Mother's Day, so maybe that's why. When we got to the register with candy, the lady asked my 6 year old if he had a mask. Everyone else had masks on but let's make sure the youngest does, so we put our candy on the counter and let dad buy while we walked outside. We aren't a family that boycotts stores for silly reasons but this store seems to really be struggling with actual candy so they might want to understand that younger kids have a hard time with masks. read more

Love coming here. It's an old fashioned candy store. Lots of displays with almost every kind of candy, fudge, chocolate bark you can think of. They also have an assortment of little gifts for kids or fancy glasswork for adults. When you come here you need to go and do the sundae bar! I ordered 2 scoop sundae with chocolate chip cookie dough and put every topping on it imaginable. Love the hot fudge, m&ms, chocolate chips, chocolate jimmies. It hit the spot perfectly. Only complaint is that there seemed to be only one person working the entire place, so our service was slow, we had to go find him so we could get our sundaes. Super ghetto and depressing in here. It's like stepping back in time 30-40 years. Dim lighting & dingy displays. Nothing looked particularly appealing BC the packaging was so plain and looked really cheap. For me, the fun of candy and confections comes largely from the packaging! Ice cream case looked gross. There were two half eaten cups of ice cream which the employees had clearly saved for later in the same freezer as the ice cream on display for customers. That was unappetizing to see. The ice cream topping bar was hidden in a dark corner and containers were filled with the paltriest amounts of toppings. It was obvious that they rarely get customers who use the topping bar so they didn't want to fill the containers full of fresh toppings. read more

If your looking for a over the top ice cream bar, this is your place. Its worth the stop to poke around. They got some crazy stuff in here. All kinds of old toys and chocolate dipped every thing. We end up not buying anything because this place smelled awful. I hope it was just that day. When you walk into a little chocolate store and and take a deep inhale and wham, your over come with a the smell of a old age home. Yikes, fire up a pot withsome extra chocolate on, guarantee you won't have people taking there ice cream out to eat in their car. Loved the hard ice cream flavor of coconut almond joy which was both texturally great & tasted like a creamier version of an almond joy- full of shaved coconut & chocolate & chunks of almonds. The Sunday bar includes: hot fudge, bitter sweet fudge, caramel, butterscotch, blueberry sauce, marshmallow sauce, maple walnut, & peanut butter sauce. The dry toppings- sprinkles, nuts, candies. Ask for whipped cream. Located just off of 495 South (the white-columned mansion beckons from from the trees - I was drawn to the light!), finding this candy shack was a breeze and the parking lot: even more easier, missah. Great selections of pre-packed candies....but how long have they been there? You can only get what they've packed up for you (no point-and-choose option here - BOOO!). Boxes of either ONE candy selection or an assortment will range from $6 - $21 (and HIGHER depending on the selection and quantity). If you make a purchase over $9 then they will gift wrap it for you for free. Chocolate coated espresso beans, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, chocolate coated cookie dough, and the sugar-free (whaaaaat) pecan pralines are pretty scrumptious. Ice cream available and they don't gyp you on the scoop-age! I asked for a single scoop of Maple Walnut (just over $2 when without toppings) and was handed NEARLY A PINT-WORTH of ice cream [o what a problem to encounter *nom!*]. There was a single sugar-free ice cream option, and perhaps one soft serve.....but TREAT yourself, for once and go full-fat! A+ for location and flavor, but the fact that I couldn't waltz in, ask for ONE bonbon and ONE caramel turtle and depart kinda rubs me the wrong way. The bathroom was a little dirty and needed attention. The young ladies operating the shop on Saturday were just as sweet as the candy (I hate it when the sellers of sweets are grouchy!). LOVE LOVE LOVE this place ! I go every year around Halloween time ! My son loves the inflatable Halloween decorations outside. Inside is decorated very nicely for fall / Halloween. They do a great job with this. The chocolates are delicious. I love the Halloween themed chocolate lollipops, and the milk chocolate orange creams - which are hard to come by. Fudge is great, and they sell a lot of different things (decorations etc) I haven't tried the ice cream but I'm sure it's great ! read more

Big fan of their Milk Coconut Dreams. My mother loves their penuche fudge with nuts, and Dad likes their dark chocolate covered almonds. If you like Oreos, don't forget to look at their selection of covered ones at the checkout counter. In addition to boxes and selections of home made chocolates, they also have some "5-cent-style" candies and gifts for kids and adults. I have never had any of their ice cream, but the warm toppings smell GOOD. If you have kids, they often have displays outside for the various holidays. Every time I come here I'm reminded of my childhood. As a little girl I dreamt of living here with my bedroom on the second floor and all the chocolate you could want on the first. We stopped here after soccer games for the ice cream sundae bar. Now, I take my kids here to get their pictures taken with the Easter bunny and Santa. Great place to stop with the grandkids for a make your own sundae. The grandkids love coming during the holidays to see the blowups and have pictures taken. I have passed by ths place for many years and always said "I should stop here someday". Well, I finally did after 40+ years and I was happy with the outcome. A couple of reviews I read said it smelled funny, the shelves were almost empty, or the staff was unpleasant. My experience was quite the opposite. The staff was kind and helpful, there was a lot of product on the shelves, and the ice cream bar was really good. To top it off the prices were reasonable. Now I could agree that it was a bit run down, but it has been there a long time as a family business. So, I guess that could make it seem not that great a location based on the outdated de or, but the place was not unpleasant either. It is worth it to stop, and I plan to do so in the future as well.
