I went here with three friends for a Sunday breakfast at about 10, figuring we would be early enough to miss the brunch crowd, but it was crowded enough where we still had to wait 5 minutes for our table after ordering. We ended up sharing a larger table with 2 other parties. No worries, but the venue itself is a little cramped. The biscuits are fantastic. I usually skip out on biscuits because they can be too dry or over seasoned, but these were probably one of the best biscuits I've ever had. I also ordered a fruit parfait, which was topped with really fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. A few points of interest: - I tried to order an americano but they don't have expresso, which I thought was odd. - They do, however, have carbonated water on tap. I don't think I've ever been to a place that offers carbonated water. - It can be an awkward mix between casual and sit-down dining: you order at the counter, but certain things like extra silverware, to-go boxes, etc, can only be accessed by asking an employee. Chances are if you're passive and the staff is busy, you'll wait a while trying to get something. I definitely look forward to going again and exploring their lunch menu. read more

Quaint spot right in the heart of Saint Anthony. This place was packed for good reason the food and atmosphere is fantastic. We stopped for brunch and glad we did. I ordered half stack with apples, walnuts and brie, my son had the full stack with fresh fruit (neither one of us could finish them all). I was a bit jealous of my BF's ham & cheese omelette (with hash browns inside) because it was AH-MA-ZING. Everything was super fresh and made to order. If you are in the area stop in. This place has a really friendly crowd and offers great service. Their grilled and buttered sour dough compliments almost anything you order, and their sausages are top notch! I hate to give a bad review but I am hoping it will make the ownership change their ways. this is such a cute place and while my particular order's taste was so-so , there were lots of food on plates around me that looked great! Our friends from Wisconsin brought us here because they had seen this restaurant on TV. The first unusual thing is that you have to wait in line and put your before your order in before you sit down. Not a Big deal but a little weird. We waited about 20 minutes, got our order in and sat down. A waitress came up and said we couldn't sit there (even though nobody else was waiting to sit down at that time) So we got up and stood around. Then the same waitress came back 2 minutes later and said we could sit down (at the same table) There was no silverware at the table but she said they would bring it, They brought our Hot chocolates and some coffee cups but no spoons to stir them with. I finally went up and got some spoons from the bar. I asked them to bring some silverware; they agreed Our food came they sat it all down but no silverware. My wife asked them to bring some; they agreed. We waited 2 more minutes staring at our food. I got up and asked another waitress for silverware. She agreed. 2 minutes later our silverware arrived Yeah! Of course since we were sitting by the front door the drafts had cooled the food down to lukewarm. Still I was hungry and dug in. The eggs weren't seasoned but it wasn't that bad. Then we tried to get butter and jam. it shouldn't be that hard but they put miniscule amounts (1/4 teaspoon) in little metal bowls and served it that way! we had to ask twice for more. (Why is this restaurant so cheap?) Finally the Toast. it was only toasted on ONE side! What is so hard about buying a toaster that toasts on both side like it should? The combination of only one side toasted and cold drafts made it hard to get the butter to melt on it. I think that if you are going to tout your homemade food and homy atmosphere you should treat your customers like family. Give them decent amounts of jam and butter, have the silverware out on the table BEFORE they sit down and learn how to make something simple like toast. You only get one chance to make a first impression. read more

Probably my favorite place to go for breakfast. Or lunch. Or brunch. Or when you're hungover and just want a good spot to get a coffee, or maybe another beer (sunday funday, anyone?). But seriously, this place leaves nothing to be desired. Just be prepared to wait in line during busy hours, and look for a parking spot before you see the cafe, that area always seems crowded. HOW ABOUT THAT HOUSE MADE HABANERO HOT SAUCE?? OH YOU DON'T KNOW?? That's the only thing Ive ever caps locked on yelp. I bought two bottles of it to-go. only $5 bucks, would've paid $10. The spicy turkey sandwich, cubano, breakfast sandwhich or biscuits, pancakes, whatever it is, you will enjoy it. Everything is exploding with flavor, it's gotta be the fresh ingredients. The staff is always extremely friendly and the prices are standard. Environment is cozy and casual with a hint of sophistication. Nice representation of the st. anthony park neighborhood. After seeing a couple of DDD videos on this place, I decided to give it a try. After turning onto Cleveland, I saw it was backed up and remembered that today is the start of the fair. I was concerned that this place being so close to the fair grounds, it might be a bit busy. I was already half way there, so I was not interested in turning back. I got there and there was plenty of street parking, so I lucked out. I went in and there was plenty of available tables and spots at the counter. I ordered and paid for my breakfast at the register. Strange, but it works. Never been to a breakfast place and ordered and pay for a meal before it's cooked. I ordered a standard sausage, hash browns, toast and 2 OE eggs with coffee. I grabbed a paper and sat at the counter. The counter has bar stools and large seats. The counter is very large. I am gonna say 36 inches deep. No cushion on the stools, so not very comfortable. The coffee and water are self serve. Once you order and pay, they give you a cup for your coffee and if requested a glass for water. My order was prepared very quickly and served. If it was busier, I wonder how they can remember who ordered what. The cashier did not ask my name. Maybe they do when it gets busier. I would guess if you are going to sit outside, you should probably mention that to the cashier when placing your order. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The hash browns were to. The toast was buttered and grilled on one side only. Strange eating toast being toasted on one side and soft on the other. It was good toast and thick to. Probably 1/2 inch thick. Not quite as thick as Texas Toast, but close. Next time, I will ask that it be toasted on both sides. The sausage was disappointing. Decent size. Flavorful, but not a flavor I was expecting for breakfast sausage. Not sure what the flavor was that I did not like. I was going to ask, but forgot. Their online menu does not describe it either. It was also dry. Not sure if they were cooked too long, too lean of pork or cooked earlier and reheated. Whatever the problem, they need to correct that. The plate was too small for this amount of food. It was an oblong plate. About 10 X 7 inches. The hash browns nearly covered the plate with the patties, eggs and toast on top. I don't mind eggs being on top of hash browns, but not the toast and sausage too. Either get larger plates or serve the toast and meat on a separate plate. I saw the cinnamon rolls in the bakery counter when I walked in. I was tempted to get one, but I knew it was way more than I could eat. Especially if I also got a full breakfast. I saw the cashier wrap one up for a to go order and she could barely fit the roll in a regular size sandwich bag. Looked delicious, but meant to be split between at least 2 people. read more

One of the best places for brunch, the best in this area. I was a regular here for a number of years, I lived just down the street. The breakfast menu is fantastic, the sandwiches are just the right amount of food to fuel you for the day. The omelets are great too! If you are into pancakes the flappers are worth a try, I recommend getting a smaller order since they are quite filling. One issue that they face, but didn't a great job in handling, is the small seating. They are a REALLY popular spot and can get filled up on weekend mornings so expect a cramped wait. Everything fresh and delicious! Pretty big portions (hence the name of the cafe). The apple, walnut, and brie flappers were ok, but not the best. Pancakes itself were fluffy. I have the best biscuits and gravy. Tons of pork and bison in the gravy and the biscuits were fresh made. Girlfriend had the spinach salad and she loved it. Had a perfectly poached egg and the crispiest bacon with lots of flavor. Came with a side of sourdough and that was freshly made! Would definitely come again if we were in town!!! read more

I was thoroughly impressed. They somehow managed to make a hidden little building in St. Anthony into a spacious and inviting cafe. The neighborhood really needed a place like this. My only complaint is that they are not open for dinner, but I suppose, the owners gotta sleep. (seriously, if you read this.... we could really use an affordable neighborhood place for dinner. Nothing fancy. I already can't afford Muffuleta.) The coffee was top notch (and I'd say I'm a pretty serious coffee snob). The egg, cheddar and bacon sandwich on a biscuit was excellent. I visited Colossal Cafe on their second day of business and immediately resolved to become a regular there. Both the food and the service are fantastic. Their dishes are made from scratch and are well-prepared and served in a timely manner. The staff are remarkably friendly - making a special effort to learn the names of their customers. With the addition of this cafe, North St. Anthony Park has reached a critical mass of good eats making it a "foodie" destination: Muffuletta, Finnish Bistro, Dunn Brothers Coffee and now Colossal Cafe in a two-block stretch. We're visiting from Texas and made this Cafe our Saturday brunch stop. It was a great experience! Great atmosphere and welcoming service. IMO this place had the righ number of tables and barseats to keep it feeling like a cafe vs. a chain, but the other reviews are accurate that there could be a wait for a table. We were lucky and didn't wait at all. Our 4 year old - who's an extremely picky eater - was very happy with his Colossal Kids breakfast of eggs, bacon, fruit & biscuit. I had the flappers with apple, walnut & brie. Definitely recommended. Brie's always good and the combo was surprisingly tasty. Even the syrup was special with a mild honey flavor. Also worth noting: this cafe has great proximity to Como Park and its historic Carousel. read more

I'd always heard how good the Mpls Colossal is, but I've never been there. When the St. Anthony Park location opened I had to give it a try. I was very disappointed. The ambiance is pleasant, but that's the only compliment I can offer. I tried the highly-touted flappers (I'm a pancake lover), but frankly they were inedible -- undercooked to the point of being gummy in the middle. The omelet was kind of sterile and uninteresting, and the coffee (I'm also a coffee lover) was so strong as to be undrinkable. I'm not a person who's prone to hyperbole. I love to eat and am fond of saying I've never met a meal I didn't like. Until now, that is. Maybe they were having a bad day, but I'm not going back anytime soon. read more

We came in on Sunday around 12:30pm for breakfast (hey, we lost an hour, so it was really still like 11:30am, and thats reasonable). The line to order was fairly long, we came in the door and didn't really get any further, but we didn't have to wait more than a few minutes to get a table once we had ordered. Thumbs up on the self-serve coffee, I think that is a fantastic idea. I'd love to see more creamer options than just the one that was up there (half n half?). Some skim milk, maybe, to make those of us who drink three or four cups feel a little better about ourselves? Water is also self-serve here. We had a strawberry flip to share between us, which was pretty good but had probably been sitting in the case all morning and the bottom was pretty soggy. But they used real whipping cream in it and the strawberries were ripe and sweet. I ordered the omlet with seasonal roasted veggies and feta, which was totally fantastic. Seriously, it was one of the best omlets I've had - the eggs were sort of soft-scrambled and pillowy so it was less like a taco shell made of eggs wrapped around a bunch of miscellaneous filler, as omlets often tend to be. The bread that comes with the breakfast items was also fantastic. I almost bought a loaf, which says a lot because I'm not really much of a bread person. I also ordered a side of bacon. Now, the bacon was good, but seriously unevenly cooked. Half of it was wilty and soft and the other half was crispy and burnt brown. On each piece! Either get a bacon press to stop it from curling and cooking unevenly or check your cooktops back there. The bacon could have been earth-shatteringly awesome, it was a nice meaty thick cut... but the uneven cooking of it made it just "good." The boy had the full stack of apple/brie/honey flappers. Now he eats a lot. Like "can put away multiple chipotle burritos without a food coma afterward" a lot. But the full stack definitely defeated him. It might be lingering sickness from the workweek, or it might be that these are essentially break pancakes, plate-sized. They're delicious, though, and have that sweet-yeasty flavor like beer bread. Beer bread pancakes. The toppings were too much for me (I'm a pancake purist), but he has a sweet tooth and enjoyed them, although was initially puzzled by the brie ("cheese? on pancakes?"). I'd definitely go here again. I might even get the same omlet, it was that good. The cookies at the register also looked good, so beware of front counter bakery impulse buying. read more

I just found my new breakfast spot. The Colossal Cafe in St. Anthony Park. Reviews typically start with the food. Here the emphasis will be on the service. Fantastic! I placed my order at the counter. The server gave me a coffee cup, silverwear and pointed me in the direction of the coffee. Two options for coffee a light roast and a dark roast Costa Rican. Both good. I ordered the Sausage, egg and cheese biscuit and a short stack of flappers. The sandwich was delicious. Eggs light and fluffy, perfectly scrambled. Homemade biscuit flaky and crisp on the outside. Grilled with butter on the inside, nice touch for this simple sandwich. The sausage patty was grilled nicely. The flappers had a heavy yeast flavor. I knew that they used yeast in the flappers but was not expecting it to be so strong. Overall it was a great meal. I will pass on the flappers next time. This place is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. The teamwork of the server and the kitchen was evident when the food was ready. Immediately brought to me by one of the kitchen staff Piping hot! Four stars should be five on my next visit. read more

The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great with it being. a great temperature, nice quiet relaxing music, and really nice people. The strawberry rhubarb jam is TO DIE FOR and I would highly recommend the colossal breakfast, it will fill you up and you have a lot of choices. I ordered the Spiced Turkey sandwich with the Cafe Salad. The salad had a little too much dressing for my taste and the turkey sandwich was a little dry (it's a whole breast, not pulled), but overall it was quite good. The best part of the meal was the beer I ordered, an IPA on tap (not the red one). I didn't have any pastries, but I was salivating over this thing called a "flip" which looked like an oversized cannoli with fruit in it. I would definitely go here again. read more

The food was alright. Went there with the bf for an early lunch which was a great idea because it got quite busy when the lunch hour rolled around. It was a narrow, cozy little restaurant which got quite noisy as it filled up. The servers were average on friendliness but the lady who took our order was very nice and understanding since it was our first time there. You order your food and seat yourself, and also get your own water which is pretty similar to other restaurants in that area. I had the meat loaf and my boyfriend had marinated pork and both were pretty good. I thought there was too much cranberry on my meat loaf but I was in LOVE with my boyfriend's marinated pork. My bf also couldn't resist getting a banana chocolate chip scone which he enjoyed and I really liked as well! read more

We have come here for breakfast many times and it is always very good. Not sure if I like the coffee, but all else is really good. THEN we ordered their Thanksgiving dinner to go, the whole sha-bang, a large turkey and all the sides, it was delicious. THEN we decided at the last minute to go there for dinner on New Year's Eve. It was four degrees, but we could walk there so we did and sat at the tiny bar. I think that was the meal that vaulted this place into the upper realms of dining for me. Maybe it was the walk in the cold, maybe it was their willingness to take our last minute reservation, but the food was as good as I have had at any of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities or Chicago. I have been there for breakfast/brunch about five times and now live too far away :( It is in a really cute little area in Como.. the parking kind of sucks but it is totally worth it! You walk in, order your food, grab a spot, and they bring it to your table. You get a lot of food for your money, which is always nice. Weekend mornings can get kind of busy and it can get cramped, especially when you need to wait. But like I said, totally worth it. Delicious! And a great variety. read more

Love me some scratch made food! I've only tried eating here once, and only for breakfast, but I can say from my experience and from the quality of the food that everything else on the menu is probably amazing. There isn't table service, so you order at the counter when you arrive. You pay ahead of time and take a table card and place settings back to your table. Beer and other drinks are served from the counter and they have glass cups with carbonated and regular water "on tap" at a small bar on the wall. If you are coming for breakfast and are venturing to try the apple, walnut, and brie flappers, do yourself a favor and get a short stack instead of the full. Trust me, when the short stack gets to your table you'll find yourself forking the plateful to check if there are in fact only two flappers in the enormous serving. The flappers are out of this world; falling off the edges of the plate and piled high with walnuts, cubed apples, and slices of brie, it is a gooey, fluffy, and ever-so-filling serving of breakfast. The serving of caramelized maple syrup and brown sugar on top goes incredibly well with the flappers and toppings. It's a challenge to even get through the short stack, so ask for some pure maple syrup to help get as much of it down as you can. This place gets extremely packed and busy, so it takes quite some time for your food to arrive, but the wait is worth it. Tables are packed close together and there is a counter that faces the kitchen with stools for seating. I haven't tried other meals here, but this location does offer dinner service in the evenings along with all the breakfast and lunch options that the Minneapolis location has. Parking is relatively easy; it's on-street but meter-free. read more
