This was an affordable stay near the ocean. Based on the pictures on line, we were expecting a pretty budget looking room. To our surprise, it had been remodeled! It was extremely small though comfortable, and we didn't spend a lot of time in the space anyway. The bathroom remodel looks really nice but there are some logistical challenges with the way the sink is set up as well as the shower. All fully functioning, though. The service was kind, the property is very quiet as guests were respectful. You can hear the ocean from your room if you leave your window open, and it was a perfect spot for an overnighter. read more

We booked this hotel on Expedia at a rate of $179. After booking it, we called the hotel to see if we could get a better rate. The reservation clerk said they had plenty of rooms at $139. We asked if they could hold one for a few minutes and we were told "no problem." I then called Expedia and explained that the rate was quite a bit lower if we booked directly with the hotel. The Expedia representative was surprised to hear the difference in price. She attempted to reach the Colton manager while we were on the phone. Meanwhile, she cancelled my reservation per my request. When we called the Colton back about 20 minutes later to book at the lower rate, we were shocked to find that Colton had suddenly increased their rate to $169. Same dates, same type of room. When we complained we were told that "rates adjust all the time." Mind you, the booking was for 2 months from now. I'm guessing that they set their rates higher for online companies like Expedia and Orbitz because so many customers use these services. They refused to honor the lower rate that was the impetus for us to cancel through Expedia. And of course the manager never called me back as was promised. read more

It has been awhile since we can coordinate schedules for a getaway. We had decided on Colton Inn because of all the good reviews we read on here. I called the day before to ask them about their hot tub rooms. We tend to stay in places that have hot tubs or jacuzzis. She(Lisa) suggested the "honeymoon suite". There are 2 other rooms but they were $30 extra because they had newer hot tubs. Lisa said this room was larger and also had a fireplace. We hadn't decided if we were going to stay 2 nights or not but Lisa offered to reserve 2 nights and to let her know before check out time if we were going to stay or not. I thought that was really nice of her. Cool we couldn't wait!! We got there around 1:30. The room was available and we went to check in. Cool. They had free DVDs. Yippee. The room looked nice. We plunked our stuff down and left for our outing. We got in around 8ish. Watched some tv and went to get DVD's. I've worked in the hotel industry before. So I know things can't always be perfect. I'm usually not picky about things at places to stay. But when things start adding up to neglectfulness I do. Negatives: 1. Two out of the four lights didn't work in the ceiling. No biggie. 2. I'm 5'6''. The sink reached up to my sternum!!! WTF?? 3. There were no instructions in the room on how to light the fireplace. There was a switch we turned it on and off a few times. No avail. Front desk said just light it with a match. We mentioned there is a key there for the gas, should we turn it on. She told us the gas has been turned off for the season. So we are in there attempting to light this inflammable "fake" firewood. We thought this is ridiculous and attempted to light it with the gas key. Poof...It worked! 4. The blue feather comforter had multiple "white stains" on it. ICK! 5. We couldn't figure out how to turn on the light to the outer enclosed patio where the hot tub was located. We finally figured it out . For some reason the light was about 10 feet away from the patio entrance. One had to walk pass the TV alcove and then the closet to get to the light switch, same switch we thought to light the fireplace. Be nice if it was labeled. 6. Too much chlorine in the hot tub water. Immediate asthma attack for me. Wheezing most the night. 7. There are instructions posted on the wall on how to use the hot tub. But none of the dials on the hot tub have words on it because they were all worn out. The light in the hot tub didn't work. We could not get the hot tub water to go up pass 94!!!! WTF! We went up to the front desk but it was closed and only for emergencies. After 5 minutes in the hot tub we gave up. We peaked at the hottub an hour later it had dropped to 92. 8. We went to take a shower. Nice large shower with 2 shower heads. Turned on the shower, the shower curtain is flapping out of the shower. After a quick shower the bathroom floor was flooded. 9. The next morning I awaken to sounds of slamming and things falling and voices. I thought "Wow these walls can't be that thin". The noise was from the housekeeping staff next door. I attempted to get a few more winks in...it was hopeless there was too much noise from next door. I think I slept a total of 4-5 hours. Some vacation. I spoke to Lisa about the hot tub issues. She was very apologetic about the hot tub. She asked if we wanted to stay another night. She offered us to look at the other two hot tub rooms. Just then somebody came in and she had asked him and he said they were not available because they were painting the floors outside of the rooms. So even if we had reserved these rooms they would not have been available. Just then the manager, Jane stepped out. She too was unaware the floors were being painted. I had told Lisa I wanted to speak to the manager about the room. For the couple of hundred we just spent on the room this was definitely not satisfactory to me. The manager tells me she is going to take $20 off the bill!!! I was polite to her but I let her know that was not satisfactory. She told me that she was not going to "comp" the room to us. That was definitely not what I was asking her to do. I don't think we should be paying that much because the hot tub didn't work. I also let her know about how the front desk instructed us to light the fireplace, stains on the comforter, and the flapping shower curtain. She then decided to take off another $30. She told me she couldn't do anything about the money issue. And I know that is not true.She just did it twice. She basically blamed issues on the owner. How the owner won't allow them to fix things. Posting proper instructions for hot tub and fireplace use, training employees is the manager's job. Terrible customer service from manager. Kudos to Lisa she should have been manager! She was more apologetic and more helpful than the uncaring manager! I will be writing the owner of this property. 2/08: Still no reply from owner after 2 letters. read more

On August 8th, I booked the Honeymoon Suite for my husband & I for the August 24th weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We were told within a couple days before August 24th that the room was double booked & they had to give it to a wedding party! The August 24th weekend was one of the busiest times to find a hotel in that area. It was horrible scrambling around looking for a nice room to stay. The worst part about it, is I found out by chance when I called to see if we could add another night to our stay and the rep. said "Oh, this is the room that we double booked with the wedding party. We have to give it to the wedding party. We were planning on calling you tomorrow." What??? Based on the 4 star reviews on Yelp, we thought, maybe we caught them on a month where they just were not on top of their records or custumer service. We decided to give them another chance a week later. My husband called and suggested a possible little discount for a future weekend based on the hell we went through searching for a room last minute due to their error. The manager said she'd call him back. She never did. It is now obvious to us that inconveniencing potential patrons was little or no consequence the Colton Inn staff. Two strikes. Based on our experiences, we could never recommend this hotel especially for an important event. Worst costumer service we have had in years. read more

Stayed at the Colton inn for a relaxing weekend with the BF, room is ok a bit on the shabby side fan is in a corner wall not above your bed and no A/C but ok not the biggest deal. Our room had a sliding glass door which led out to a nice deck, considering that everything closes early due to Covid we though this is great we can end our night with a nice bottle of wine on the deck.... WRONG! First of we had friends another couple staying at the same establishment. After a night out we came back to our hotel room and sat on the deck to enjoy the night this is when things went really wrong. The manager came out and said we where too loud and had to go back in our room the deck closes at 8! Ok well when we checked in no one told us there would be a curfew and we couldn't go out to the deck after a certain time. Let me remind you we payed for this stay and our room led directly onto the deck. The funny thing is the room next to ours had a balcony adjacent to the deck but the guest there where able to hang out. So we came in, my BF and my friends BF decided to hang out in his room since they thought they might have disturbed the occupants in the next room hence the noise complaint they left to go to the his friends room and the manager proceeded to follow them, she then called that room and accused them again of being too loud. My BF came back to our room and again the manager accused us of having more people in our room then told him not to play stupid, first of she's lucky I didn't hear her say that second of all how ignorant can she be when she literally followed my BF and the his friend to his room and then saw him come out and come back to his room. She was rude, unprofessional and frankly she harassed them. We paid to be in these rooms we have the freedom to come and go as we please. It almost felt as we couldn't laugh or have a good time. She made the stay uncomfortable never again will we stay there and I strongly encourage that if you are looking to stay there you think twice and go somewhere else. The manager is awful with absolutely no customer service skill . I really hope the owner reads these reviews and does something about this because that was totally uncalled for and just bad for business. read more

We stayed here last Friday night-Monday morning. The room had ants, they told us to throw a towel over it and ignore it. We requested that they clean it or we get a new room. They said they would clean it but we had to remove all our stuff the next morning for housecleaning. When we got back Saturday, after visiting the aquarium, the keys didn't work. When we went to get new keys the manager at the desk accused us of bringing dogs (there were some dog hairs on my sons blanket that had transferred to the bed cover) and "proved it" by showing us a comforter cover with a few dog hairs although we absolutely did not bring our dogs. We went about our business and left Monday morning. When I checked out I asked if there was anything I needed to know/do/sign and was told no by the girl at the desk. Yesterday we received an email with an additional $250 for a pet fee. The manager texted the girl at the desk and she told us to call Expedia/booking.com instead of dealing with the situation herself. Expedia told us this is an issue that needs to be addressed with the hotel. read more

I'm giving this place one stare because the lady that works there at night is really bringing this establishment down. They need to get rid of her ASAP. She accused me of having other people in my room because a family member was in my room while we were getting ready to go out. That family member was staying at the same hotel but different room which she checked in when they got there. She even told me "not to play stupid" with her. What kind of service is that. Then to top it all of she said we couldn't hang out on the back deck and talk so she said it was closed even though that is one of the amenities my room had. I had a sliding door leading strait to the deck. So we went to his room instead and she immediately called that room and started going back and forth with the guest of that room. So I said forget I'll just go back to my room and sure enough she was standing out side watching my every move. The other guest went out to check if his car doors were locked and she fallowed him. Literally walking right behind him. She seemed racist and I'm not just saying that because of what's going on in the world. It was her demeanor and that way she talked to us. If I was the owner of this place she would be gone!!!!! She is an embarrassment for that place. Don't stay here!!!! The other guest that stayed there and myself will definitely not be staying there and will never recommend that place until she's gone. She even threatened to call the police to have us removed from the room. She went to the extreme and I was caught completely off guard. read more

Upon firs arrival two ladies at front desk were polite, rooms were clean. NO POOL though boyfriend was sad about that. Good location though,not far from anything. Only thing I did not like was I asked for two more towels and the guy at front desk said "well didn't you get some yesterday" I don't understand why he couldn't say yes no problem. Then told me I would have to go down to get them. I know it's not a 5 star hotel but most places take the towels to you. I spent several hours browsing and reading reviews for an affordable hotel for our overnight stay in Monterey, and the Colton Inn served our needs perfectly. The room was surprisingly spacious and had a fireplace and king bed. There were sinks both inside and outside the bathroom. And mostly importantly, everything was very clean. The hotel has a private lot and there looks to be plenty of street parking around too. Our drive to dinner on Cannery Row was only 5 minutes, and the hotel is close enough to be walkable all the way down to the aquarium and back (although our feet were hurting afterwards). The free DVD rentals came into use when we realized there's not exactly a nightlife in Monterey. Their collection is huge! We spent our night in watching Taken :) I save 5-star ratings for luxury hotels with all the bells and whistles, and Colton Inn is not one of them (nor is it trying to be). However, for the price, it's a GREAT value that I'd recommend to any Monterey visitor. read more

My husband and I stayed here for a couple of months because we were in town for work. They were amazing. If you really want to know how great a hotel is, try staying more then a week. Lol. The staff is wonderful and great people all around. They really go out of there way for you. The location is in downtown area, walking distance to everything so its great if you want to go out to the bar and not worry about driving. The staff is always willing to suggest a nice restaurant or upcoming festival. If you are in Monterey during the week, dont miss the fruit market that takes place every tuesday just down the street from this hotel. All around great experience. Worst experience at a motel, very rude people work there , when asked for extra coffee for our room was told no , I explained we have 3 guest and being charged extra I should at lease have coffee for 3 in my room? " we don't hand out extra, explained we also needed towel and told no and now I have been charged 56$ for extra person. When I parked up front in open parking was asked to move my car to the street and told its free parking on street , they didn't want my car parked up front by office , again next night the office call my room after in was in bed and asked again for me to move my car , again 4 open spots up front it was open parking. Very very rude people would never stay again. When asked for a receipt on my charges they said to contact Expedia , I just asked what they charged my card and they couldn't tell me charges! Not sure why this place has 4-5 star ratings from so many other people. I feel it's overpriced for what it is. I feel the staff is nice at first but is quick to scold you about silly things they might see you doing. Like gently playing an acoustic guitar on a Saturday evening on their deck. Speaking of their deck, they have propane heaters. No propane. Heaters are a necessary evil in Monterey in the evening and even afternoon unfortunately theirs don't work. Rooms aren't that nice IMO. Have had nicer rooms at holiday inn in Monterey for less money. Our friends had multiple issues with their room. They have done nothing to earn my repeat business. Below are just my personal experience of one night stay at the Colton inn during memorial weekend. We stayed at the room 110. The TV doesn't work. The heater doesn't work. The fridge doesn't work. Microwave doesn't work. The fuse kept burning out. We asked for a roll up bed. The front desk says it could not be done because we did not request in advance. Therefore I had to sleep in the ground. I'm giving this place 2 stars only because the bed was actually ok and they provided 4 pillows per bed. And because the location is close to the wharf and a quick walk to the free trolly. However the rest of the stay was by far from ok. From check in to check out every employee we spoke to was rude. I actually thought one lady was being nice helping us buy aquarium tickets but then she even started talking to us like we were idiots. They are very picky about parking, and asked us to move a few times, and even asked us to move out to the street. When we arrived and parked up front to check in we were told to move, so we did. But when we got back from dinner there was no spots so we parked up towards the front. Right in the morning we were asked to move. While we were standing outside we asked where we should move since we have a large truck. The girl told us to back in a small spot. I explained to her that even if we fit in that spot we couldn't open the doors to get out of the truck. She informed us to move as soon as we could. From that point they even called the room to tell us to move. It's was very annoying!!! Other downs falls of this place is there is not central air. All you're provided is a space heater. Also pictures show you have a small balcony but it's a shared balcony with whoever you are rooming by. Our room also smelled very musty. The walls are very thin and you hear your neighbors quit a bit. We were charged 56 dollars for a 3rd person, but along with that charge we were told no extra coffee for the room. And when I went back to get a 2nd cup of coffee from the lobby the employee informed my mom that they are trying to be sparing with the coffee. I would never stay here again. Pay the extra money to park at a different hotel, it will be worth it! Even with the parking issues they could have just been nice about it, maybe said please or even smiled. read more

Pretty bad experience here unfortunately. I made a reservation then called to switch it to the week after. I got another confirmation email after the switch saying that everything was fine and that the date had been changed. When I showed up, it turned out they charged me for the original day and marked me down as a no-show without even trying to get in touch with me. I showed them the confirmation for the new date and both women at the reception desk - they did both seem nice and like they wanted to help - told me there was nothing they could do until their manager got involved. Their manager wasn't around and wasn't available even though it was one in the afternoon on a Thursday. They said it would all be taken care of by the time I checked out the next morning, though, so I let it go. Came to the front desk to check out the next morning and the reception lady said that while the manager is reviewing the emails and confirmation they are charging me twice because they can't give out free rooms, even though they had multiple free rooms that night. I was told to wait an extra few days for things to get cleared up. No call from the manager, no apologies for the confusion... just suspicion that for some reason I was apparently trying to steal a room even though I had a valid confirmation number and email lol. Will update this if/when things hopefully get resolved. Update - they did eventually refund me for the original night, but made no effort to comp me or anything else for the inconvenience read more

Never thought this day in age I'd pay $150 a night for a room without A/C. To be fair we were there during a hot spell but waking up in a sweat is never fun. Nice that they had a little something for breakfast everyday and the rooms were clean. Free parking was also nice for the area. read more

We were looking for a nice place near the center of everything in Monterey Bay for our anniversary. We quickly realized that the time we were going was Mother's Day weekend and every hotel and motel jumped their prices up. We landed on Colton inn for the price and it was located 5 minutes away (driving) from their fisherman's wharf so we booked it. The workers there were extremely nice and informative (ask about the location for free shuttle to take you around). The room we got was very clean and comfortable. Usually places like these have really uncomfortable beds but, not here; the beds are pretty decent and could be one of the best sleep i've had in an "inn" for a long time. The Colton Inn is a pretty small establishment. They serve complimentary snacks all day and up to when the office closes and complimentary breakfast in the same room. So, basically where you check-in/out is the area you can pick up breakfast or snacks and bring it up back to your room. It's really no biggie for me but, just to let you all know. The walls seem thin as we can hear footsteps from upstairs and kids from neighboring rooms but, it's a good thing i'm a deep sleeper and didn't affect me at all and what i liked about the room we got is that it came with a small little patio (too bad it was cloudy while we were there) to catch some rays or have a drink outside. I'd definitely, would come back for the great customer service, free parking and the clean comfortable room. Check it out if you're visiting the area. read more

I just returned from a delightful overnight stay...The rooms were affordable and well stocked...I had a fireplace with a log which I lit...Made a cold rainy evening that much more cozy...All the staff was friendly and check in was easy..There was a lovely woman at the desk who seemed to know the area and the ambiance with the fireplace in lobby, cookies and coffee, also fresh fruit was just great after a rainy drive to Monterey.. Location is close to everything..The front desk recommended a wonderful place to eat not far away in Pacific Grove with a gorgeous view and sunset (early bird specials ) prices... My girlfriend booked our hotel room here for the big sur half marathon. This hotel was not part of the organizations's list of hotels, we decided to go rogue on this one. Only a 15 min walk to the starting line. Not bad at all. Check in was smooth and easy. Hotel was nice enough to open their continental breakfast early from 7am to 5:30am for the runners. They had bagels, fruits, coffee, tea, and yogurt ready for us. Rooms were spacious with refrigerator and microwave and also came with a fireplace which was great. Good price for a safe, clean room. King-sized bed was comfortable, fireplace was a nice touch. There was a microwave and a mini-fridge, which were handy. There's free TV, parking, wifi and you can borrow free DVD's (they're actually really updated) from the front desk. The front desk worker, John, was so sweet and helpful. He gave us directions and recommendations to 17 mile drive, the butterfly grove sanctuary, etc. There's also free fruit and cookies at all times in the lobby. I love supporting small businesses instead of staying at a chain like Motel 6. The Colton Inn was the perfect choice for my weekend getaway. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, and the free breakfast actually has a variety of options such as bagels, pastries, cereals, and toast. I also used the free DVD rental and the convenient vending machine for popcorn. The fireplace was a nice touch although it does leave the room smelling like BBQ afterwards. read more

The location was excellent but it falls short of a star because our beds were very uncomfortable and they were very stingy about giving out extra towels! We had gone snorkeling early one day and returned to our room in order to shower and clean up. When we asked the front desk for 4 more towels, he claimed that they were short on supply and so he would only give us 2 more. The next day when the maid practically refused to give us any extra towels! My first time to experience something like this. On the bright side, the place served a decent continental breakfast and had quite an extensive list of free dvd's for guest to check out. read more

I booked this hotel for my boyfriends 25th birthday, I wanted it to be special for him. Ellen, the manager and I emailed back and forth for a week about doing something special. She went above and beyond accommodating my request. I booked the King Spa Room, it was very clean & we loved having our own relaxing area outside of the room. We have been staying at the Colton Inn for years whenever we want to go to Monterey. It's not oppulent or super deluxe but it is clean and comfortable, and a good value for the area. We paid $149 this past weekend (AAA discount saved us $20/night) for a king bed and fireplace, also including a refrigerator and microwave. The location is great, you can walk to the art museum or downtown so you can leave the car parked there all day. Stokes restaurant is right around the corner. Oh, also free wi-fi, and free DVD's to borrow for the night. read more

This is a great place to stay if you visiting Monterey. The hotel is 5 minute walking from downtown. They provide free wifi and breakfast for their guests and you can just go and grab cookies, coffee and fruits from the lobby throughout the day. The room we stayed was spacious and cozy. It had a nice fireplace which was super easy to light. The view from our room was green and therapeutic. The room had an additional wash basin outside the restroom which we loved! There is ample parking space for guests near the rooms and our stay was comfortable. Will surely stay here for our next trip as well. read more

Pros: It's in a great, central location. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They offer free breakfast as well as snacks/coffee all day. Our room had a microwave & fridge which is rare these days. Fireplace and a heater. Spacious room with comfy bed. Reasonably priced. Cons: The walls are paper thin so don't plan on sleeping in. It's loud/echoey and the cleaning staff don't really help that. The shower water temperature was either scorching hot or freezing and kept changing in a 5 minute span. read more

I found the Colton Inn to be clean, comfortable, and fantastically located. I stayed there in December while visiting Monterey for the "Christmas in the Adobes" event. The hotel was walking distance to all the historical homes and buildings that participated in the event. It was also conveniently located to shopping, dining, and large attractions like the aquarium. I loved the fireplace in my room! Breakfast was basic, but was fine. What really impressed me was how quickly my one concern was addressed. The TV wasn't working in the morning, so I stopped at the front desk to report it on my way to get breakfast. The woman at the desk asked if the maintenance man could enter the room and I said sure. I filled up a plate with breakfast and took it back to my room - could not have taken me more than five minutes. When I got there, the maintenance guy was leaving my room and the problem was solved. It was like, instant resolution! That really stood out for me. I'd absolutely stay there again if I'm ever back in the area. read more

Before my daughter and I made reservations at the Colton Inn, we were a bit hesitant because of the negative reviews about the manager Dave. However, there is a new manager named Pierce and he went out of his way to make things work out well for us. The desk staff, including Lisa and Adriel, were outstanding in their customer service and helped us plan a room with a jacuzzi that was absolutely wonderful. The jacuzzi is in an attached covered room, very comfortable and with spa robes and towels provided, and was immaculate when we arrived. The decor is a bit dated, as is some of the equipment in the room, but there were painters there working on the property even over the holidays, and the TV in our room was a new flat screen. The pillows and comforter were very cozy, and everything was spotless. Let's face it, the rates are great for a jacuzzi room (or even for rooms with fireplaces) and it's within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf. Definitely a place we'll return to on our next visit! read more
