Pro: authentic oaxacan food, prices. Grow: food was a bit cold. Tip: they accept cash and venmo. Comedor tenchita has been on my radar after reading a review from LA eater. This backyard kitchen is in the home of Doña Tenchita who is a 76 year old traditional cook from Oaxaca. Oaxaca has some of the best food in México and we are so lucky to have this establishment. There is no signage and the house is green. The backyard patio is spacious and colorful. They are open from 10am- 5 pm on Sundays only. Food: we opted for the tlayudas with 3 meats and molotes. This was more than enough for 2 people. The tlayuda was a generous size although a bit cold and not too crispy when it got to our table. The molotes were also a tad too cold by the time we ate them. The hot chocolate was a 10/10 and perfect for a rainy day in LA. There was also someone giving samples of Tejate which is a traditional fermented drink. Overall, this is a unique family run business with unique dishes. I wouldn't go out of the way to come here but definitely check them out if In the area.

I had been wanting to try this spot for so long. Finally went last Sunday. Behold Comedor Tenchita! This Oaxacan family has got a full on catered feast in their back yard every Sunday. Cooking done by Grandma and her daughter, with grandkids waiting tables, and several other helpers. They put out the menu and specials each week on their IG. I ordered jamaica, molotes filled with potato and chorizo topped with black bean puree lettuce and cheese, and the special pork in salsa frita which is like tomato soup and also came with black beans and fresh tortillas. It was crowded. The food was delicious. Everyone was so nice. Cannot wait to go again. My favorite part: the young man waiting tables told me I speak excellent Spanish.

Absolutely delicious empanadas in the area! We stopped by on a Wednesday afternoon and we were the…read moreonly customers at that time. We were greeting by a friendly staff member, perhaps the owner, who helped us with our empanada selection. We got spicy chicken, spicy beef, corn, and criolla empanadas. I strongly recommend the Criolla empanada, which is the most traditional, Argentinian empanada. It has ground beef, raisins, eggs, green onions, and spices. It was absolutely delicious and, when I go back, I will select this empanada!! I also recommend the corn empanadas (humita), especially if you're looking for a vegetarian option. It has corn, melted mozzarella, and white sauce. So delicious! I got these to go, but there are cute tables indoors and outdoors if you want to enjoy your empanadas there. They also sell mate and other Argentinian goodies like alfajores. Prices are reasonable; you can purchase just a few or a dozen. This has become my favorite empanada place!

I love empanadas and wanted to see if this place lived up to the great reviews…read more The gentleman taking the orders was super nice and threw in a little something on the house. While the empanadas are $7.50 each, they are large and packed pretty well. Unfortunately that's where it ends... I tried four different kinds (cheese and potato, beef, criolla and chicken) and while they tasted fresh, they just didn't have a lot of flavor. I was also a little disappointed that they were fried instead of baked. They don't compare to the empanadas at El Gaucho market in North Redondo Beach, which has been my go to spot for empanadas for a while. Now those are super flavorful. Two disappointing stars for the empanadas and an extra star for customer service.

But this time I also got the Cuban. My husband said the Cuban pork was soft and flavorful. He was pleasantly surprised. The beef always hits. They were filled so much the innards were spilling everywhere. Get the spicy chimichurri you will not regret it. The mild is just that. Mild. I can't eat spicy and even the mild was lacking for me. My friends got other flavors (pictured). I would come back and get the sweet ones next time. This is not a daily food. A 6 pack cost me $40. What I ordered: 3 beef 1 cuban 2 corn My husband asked why don't you yelpers post pictures of the insides. All I see is a whole empanada. I wanna see what it's filled with. So here are pictures of the insides. Hahahah

We picked the following: 2 Chicken Jalapeño 2 Philly Cheesesteak 2 Strawberry Cheesecake They hooked us up with a $2.26 bundle discount for a total of $34.64 plus tax. Honestly, it still felt a bit pricey for empanadas. On the bright side, they looked beautiful, perfectly golden. They actually stamp the name of the flavor right on each empanada crust, which is super convenient, so you know exactly which one is which. For the taste-wise, the only ones we actually liked were the Philly Cheesesteak empanadas. They were really good and cheesy! The Chicken Jalapeño and Strawberry Cheesecake ones were just mediocre and lacked flavor. Overall, they look amazing, but I've definitely had better empanadas elsewhere.

I wasn't expecting there to be so many different empanadas to choose from, so I took a while deciding. He was really patient, answered all my questions, explained the different options, and gave me some great recommendations. I ended up getting the Beef, Chili Carne, Chicken, Spicy Potato, Santa Fe Chicken, and Spinach & Cheese empanadas. They were all really good, and I liked that they let me choose from three different sauces/salsas to go with them. Everything came out quickly and was packaged really well. They even included a list showing which empanada was which, which I really appreciated since they all looked pretty similar once they were in the box. I actually came for the empanadas, but they also had fresh pasta and decided to give it a try. I'm really glad I did because it was excellent. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, the sauce was delicious, and honestly I'd come back just for the pasta. There are still a bunch of things on the menu I want to try, especially the sweet empanadas, so I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Great food, friendly people, and a really welcoming experience. I'd definitely recommend checking them out!

World Empanadas has so many empanadas flavors to choose from. I tried a bunch of flavors and I liked all of them! My favorites were the Santa Fe chicken, breakfast, spinach, and the chile con carne. They all had amazing flavor. The order came with a big serving of chimichurri and that was a nice addition to the empanadas. World Empanadas also has breakfast burritos that I am interested in trying next time. Since I don't live close, this is my new stop when I'm going to Burbank airport. World of Empanadas is amazing and I highly recommend getting their empanadas!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Nice variety of sweet and savory empanadas…read more I was looking for a light meal at the farmers market and their empanadas caught my eye. I got a Beyond beef (juicy and flavorful) and a Pineapple cream (not too sweet, with large pineapple chunks in an amazing custard cream sauce). The pastry was a bit dry for the savory one but not for the sweet one--apparently the slight dryness is a good complement to the gooey filling. What started out as a five star review for this Place ended up being a two star. I came to the counter and asked if they were going to have any more Samosa Veggie. I was told it would take a half an hour so I sat down and waited for a half an hour, went up to the counter and asked do they have any available? They said the guy that baked them just went on break and it's gonna take another 20 minutes. That is totally unacceptable for them to tell me they would have some in a half an hour and then completely ignored me and just went ahead and did their own thing. THEY LIED TO ME, so this place gets a two star rating. I'd I'd rather go to the location in downtown Los Angeles. Don't ever come to this location. I can see why they got a low rating overall. It was a cute hole in the wall, and I could see someone hand kneading and rolling the dough in the kitchen, which was heartwarming to see. I love different cultural foods that make LA what it is today. I ordered: Beef saltenas (3/5) - dry overall, sweet and savory veggie beef stew inside; comes with a watery green sauce Chicken saltenas (3/5) - similar to beef saltenas Cheese empanadas (2/5) - 90% bread with a bland, thin spread of bland cheese. It was puffed up and empty. Rollos de queso (1/5) - so dry, almost choked, little to no cheese & all bread Cuñapes (1/5) - tastes like a sweet version of the brazilian cheese bread appetizer at fogo de chao, except this is one is super dry as well and makes you cough for water I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately missed the mark. For a little over $20, it was definitely worth trying but I wouldn't go back.
