I really enjoyed the food, especially the torta de bistec. The only issue I ran into was that I ordered a togo , and it felt like the food wasn't quite at its full potential flavor-wise. The chicken mole taco had a good tortilla, but it was a bit hard, probably because I ordered it to go. The mole itself was very rich, traditional, and on the sweeter side. My boyfriend also mentioned that his burrito was a little dry. I would like to come back and try it in person. Hopefully next time changes my opinion. read more

My friend and I were looking for a late lunch spot since we were starving, and Tlayuda happened to be nearby so we decided to check it out. We came on a Sunday afternoon around 4:30 pm and it was pretty empty with only one other customer in the restaurant. Luckily we found street parking right around the corner, but it didn't look like there was much parking available in this area. The restaurant is quite small and we missed it the first time driving past. Had to circle around again before we spotted it. As the name suggests, their specialty is the tlayuda, which I would describe as a Mexican pizza made using a large tortilla. There's a nice description and picture of one on the front of the menu. Because I was starving, I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous and decided to get the carne encebollada ($16.50) instead, which is a plate of grilled meat with onions, rice, beans, and tortilla. Rice, beans, and meat, you can't go wrong with that combo! I asked for half chicken and half steak so I could try out two different meats and was really glad I did. I liked the chicken more than the steak since it was juicier and more tender. It was a lot of food, but for me it was the perfect amount, and I finished everything off. This meal hit the spot and was exactly what I wanted. My friend got the enchiladas verdes ($15.50) and enjoyed his food as well. The owner was super nice and gave my friend some mole to try when he was considering getting the enchilada de mole but wasn't sure if he would like mole since he's never had it before. Yall.... This was so damn good!! I searched the maps "Lunch" and did not want to eat any fast food, and stumbled across this restaurant! First time ever trying it and I've listed the things I've ordered below. I went with my very picky Mexican grandmother and she absolutely loved it. She likes her food spicy so we ordered another side of their salsa verde. "Estaba muy rico" my grandmother says!! They also have bathrooms so that's a good bonus as well! So, overall this was a really good experience and the glass jars the Jamaica came in was cute :)!!! Service was great, we got our food in like 10-15 mins of ordering! Please stop settling for fast food Mexican pizza and make your way to Tlayuda LA for the real thing. We came here for the tlayudas, (large tortilla with beans, lettuce, cheese and meat - like a Mexican pizza) but everything we tried here was homey, made to order and soso good, down to the kids meal! It's a simple, casual dine-in spot off Santa Monica Blvd near the 101 entrance, but it seems like a lot of people get their orders to go. Finding street parking on a Sunday afternoon wasn't fun even when it's free that day. I appreciated all their street/pop tlayuda art that was displayed throughout the restaurant. Tlayuda LA is a gem in Los Angeles. Some of the best Oaxacan food in the city, offering plenty of variety including vegan and vegetarian options. The flavors are rich and comforting. My favorite dish is the vegan chipotle torta with Serrano salsa, a side of black beans, and chips with guacamole. The horchata and cafe de olla are special as well. Ultimately though, the vegan mole made with Jamaica as the "meat" substitute is INCREDIBLE and the highlight of the restaurant in my opinion. I used the reviews on yelp to find this place!. So as we walk in its a small restaurant which was clean, simple and had some art work on the walls near the entrance representing Los Angeles. Right away we were acknowledged and seated... this is a bonus. The manager Jahir was very friendly and attentive. His service was so amazing that because my friend and I weren't sure what drink to choose he let us sample them all!!! They had the aqua's Fresca which I liked the Hibiscus flavor and my friend chose Tamarind. The food all around was all homemade even the tortillas!!!, however the sauces were amazing hot but not fiery which gave lots of flavor!!!! Yummy!!! This place is a golden gem. A place that not only treats you like you're a part of their kitchen but provides a positive experience. The overall visit was DELIGHTFUL which is the word that best describes Tlayuda.!! The restaurant is smaller but it was still very beautiful and cute inside. They have a lot of amazing decorations and bright, colorful walls, so you really feel like you stepped inside Oaxaca. The food itself was also really good and the portions were big and enough to take home for leftovers the next day ( which for the prices are super fair!) So I decided to try this local family owned place with a menu of homemade entrees that not only served our taco cravings but had other offerings and flavors that sounded so good that we had to try this place out! First timer: Mexican and lover of Oxacan food If you're still reading, this is your sign to try this place. Everything is made from scratch and you can taste it. Portions are generous and just perfect! We had the mole enchiladas + rice, rice was fluffy and buttery, that mole sauce is everything, not too spicy not too sweet, anyone can eat these and love them. The chorizo Tlayuda was made to perfection! I've had Tlayudas before and this is by far my favorite Tlayuda ever! better than Guelaguetza and so pefectly made for someone who like me likes to enjoy every bite of it without the big o chunks of things on top of it. FYI if you have the Tlayuda with the 3 meats just be aware that the steak on it is on the saltier side that's just the way the meat is prepared and made for this dish everywhere, not just here. Im not much of a meat eater so if you're like me have the chorizo, chicken or the vegeterian option. The Aguas Frescas are home made!! you dont have to be afraid that these are made from powder. It's hard finding tamarind agua fresca made from scratch and they make it here and I love it!! I do also give a 10/10 to the Horchata, Hibiscus and Cucumber and mint lemon water, all of them are soo yumm! Their Salsas are right for anyone, those who like spice and those who jus enjoy a yumm non spicy salsa try them its worth it because they cook with excellence. I read somewhere that some of the best Oaxacan food is at a small restaurant owned by one woman named Laura that is nearby and called, appropriately, TLAYUDA LA. Wanting to try my first ever tlayuda, I drive to the restaurant and get the "tlayuda supreme," one with 3 meats (2 types of pork and beef). Now I've never had a tlayuda and understand it to be something of a healthier pizza in that you give up the carbohydrate-heavy dough and crust of the Italian pizza for a large, thin flour tortilla that is baked before being dressed up-- This all sounds real promising and what arrives at my table? Well, it is nothing short of artistic and mouth-watering: a large tortilla smeared over w bean paste, cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato veggies, avocado, the 3 meats, etc. Just look at the pictures below, it's really something to behold. One bite and I know that I've found my place for this dish as all the elements just work together and synergistically, the taste being unlike really anything I've had at more typical LA Mexican restaurants. The meats are smokey and spiced nicely, work well with the freshest seeming of vegetables, and the house made dipping sauces of tomatillo, verde, habanero and one I'm forgetting, just complete it all. Delicious! This is a hearty dish and at $19, it can be eaten alone as an entire meal for a big eater or shared. 10/10 I sample all the homemade drinks, the "aguas frescas," real horchatas, a minty lemonade, something that tastes like tamarind juice, as well as a persimmon styled one and am in heaven. On another night I get a $15 chicken enchilada sampler plate with rice that is also just top notch with 3 shredded chicken enchiladas - verde, tomatillo, and a savory molé that you must try - and it too is just fantastic. Whatever they are cooking the chicken in, the finished meat is soft and pliable, moist and flavorful in that savory way chicken is when cooked in stock or for soups. If this is the Oaxacan twist on Mexican food? I'm sold. Get to TLAYUDA LA and try this all yourself. It's unique and deserves your attention as the restaurant is 100% woman owned and operated. I have had Tlayuda LA on my bookmarks for a few years now. While I was in the area looking for some lunch, I found Tlayuda again and knew I had to go. They have a nice intimate dining area with lots of art all around. Their menu offers up a variety of Oaxacan style dishes such as the Tlayuda (a kind of pizza), tacos, specialty dishes and a variety of vegan dishes! I've had my eye on the Tlayuda for ages, so I knew I had to try the Tlayuda Supreme. It came on a thin crispy tortilla (it reminded me of a lavash) covered with black bean puree, veggies, Oaxacan cheese, and topped with beef, pork and chorizo! It was deliciously flavored and the meat toppings were very tasty. Super cool spot, glad that I was able to try such an unique dish. A women owned Oaxacan restaurant! This place is amazing. There's a parking lot right next to this location so parking isn't horrible to find. They check your vaccination status and ID before you get to sit down so they're super cautious which I love. The vibes are great here. Really cute date spot. The owner is super sweet and kind. It gets kinda busy over the weekends so be prepared for that. The food here is really tasty. I tried their chicken, chorizo and egg, pork, and carne asada tacos. Their chorizo and egg taco has to be my favorite. It's so flavorful and there's so much egg and chorizo. It's mushy in the best kind of way. Their breakfast burrito is also super beautiful and yummy. Their black bean chips and salsa are fire. The chicken Fajita bowl was so flavorful and paired really well with the rice. The rice was so good and chicken was so juicy. The veggies also tasted so fresh. Everything here is made pretty fresh and tastes so healthy. I usually am afraid to have Mexican food because it hurts my stomach but this place is really clean and doesn't upset my tummy at all. Also the hibiscus tea is soooo good! We came here for a late lunch after landing in LA. The two women working were incredibly friendly and helpful, answering all of our questions and checking in on us throughout our time at the restaurant. It was my first time having a Tlayuda, which they happily made a vegan version out of the vegetarian one. It was delicious! Light and crispy, massive, veggies cooked perfectly, and it came with two hot sauces - the verde one was unreal. My partner got Huevos a la Mexicana which he loved, and I got one of each of the Chipotle and Mole hibiscus tacos (vegan!). The tortillas were outrageously good, the mole had deep flavor, and the chipotle sauce contrasted and complimented perfectly with the hibiscus. We both got horchatas as well which were fantastic. Tlayuda is such a gem in LA, and so glad I got to try them a few days ago. I was pleasantly happy and content all around. First of all, loved the decor of bright blue walls with art all around. Has a very warm and welcoming feel. The service was also great! Had the pleasure of meeting Susie and Ana, which were both very friendly and helpful. Susie came around regularly to make sure I was ok or if I needed anything at all. I had asked some questions about the food and Ana, the cook, was happy to explain. They were both very sweet and added to the pleasant experience I had with my meal. And the food was all just as good as everything else; very flavorful and good. And love that they have veggie and vegan options as well. I truly enjoyed everything that I ate here. This is what I had: Blue corn chips with guacamole and salsa: I'm not used to blue corn chips, so this was a nice touch. Plus the salsa had a good spicy kick, and the guacamole was very tasty. Two tacos, one veggie and one vegan. Veggie taco made with grilled zucchini, onion, mushroom, bell pepper with cheese and avocado: The veggies were all perfectly cooked and seasoned and the strips of Oaxacan cheese on top gave it a tasty touch with the avocado. The vegan taco was made with chipotle marinated hibiscus flower with avocado: This was my first time having hibiscus flower in a taco and it was sooo deliciously good! I would definitely have it again. Veggie breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs scrambled with tomato, onion, Serrano pepper and potato fried with cheese: This was also really good. Loved the potato fried with the cheese that was inside, and the flavors were all really good together. The two sauces that came with the burrito were also very yummy and had a nice spicy flavor. Aguas frescas of hibiscus flower, tamarindo, horchata, brewchata (horchata with coffee), and mint cucumber lemonade: All were good! They were refreshing and went nicely with the food. And I had never had horchata mixed with cold brew coffee, so that was a nice surprise that I enjoyed. Not to mention they have non dairy horchata also. You really can't go wrong with any of the aguas frescas that they have, or the food really either. I will definitely return soon and recommend them to anyone that wants good food, specially Oaxacan. I would eat everything that I had here again, and also eyed a few other things on their menu that I must try next time. Can't wait to! I went to Tlayuda LA over the weekend, and it was so yummy! As soon as I walked in I could smell the amazing flavors. I couldn't wait to dig in, and I hadn't even ordered yet. Haha. The interior of the restaurant is snug, but it makes for a great intimate atmosphere. I enjoyed seeing older couples and close friends come into the restaurant. It made it feel like home and authentic. Just confirming what's already been said before. I've been here a handful of times and I wouldn't keep coming back if the food didn't have that memorable taste. Great food, it has a clean taste to it. A lot of care goes into these dishes, I love how it's naturally flavored. Not over saturated with a bunch of salt. Side note: They do make a great coffee here by the way it's something that's another secret here, but of course the tlayuda is what we come in here and what does not miss one bit. I usually get it with their home made chorizo and that's pretty much the way to do it. I've ordered their breakfast and lunch items, whatever you choose you'll most likely be good. For parking it's a very very busy street. You're on Santa Monica Blvd with Western being the major cross Street. If you get lucky parking on the street that's great but you may have to turn down some of the neighborhood streets. It is what it is with the parking so just be prepared but be ready to enjoy some good food read more
