WHY IS THE CHEESE MELTED DIRECTLY ONTO THE BREAD AND NOT ON TOP OF THE MEATS? it is beyond me? Are you serious? It makes it way to soggy and prevents me from fully realizing the taste of the cheese. Recently stopped by this, what was, fantastic place. After waiting an hour to get a table, which is no big deal by itself, we were seated by some surly d bag, served by another one, and left to out own devices by the same. Four person table. 3 meals came out ahead of the others. Not a problem. Except when 15 minutes pass without the fourth coming. No apology. To top it off, the meatloaf was burned. Badly burned. I went to comet for the first time tonight and absolutely LOVED it. The food was amazing, the bloody was delicious and the service was wonderful. We had a nice, polite, red headed waitress. The drinks and food came out quick. I was completely satisfied with my visit. I highly recommend this place to anybody. They also have such wonderful vegan options. I will be back without a doubt. I just love this place. There is always a wait, but it is ALWAYS worth it. Drove to Comet Cafe looking forwards to the veggie burger voted number two in the country by veg times. Much to my disappointment they were out of it as a matter If fact they were out of vegetarian option. So I had the ahi tuna burger which made me terribly sick on the way home. Had lunch here and was serenaded by No Doubt the entire time. That in itself would have excuse poor service or mediocre fare, but both of those were excellent. It's grungy, but not in the dirty, appetite-spoiling sense. I mean "grungy" in that it feels sort of industrial, kind of the way I think Milwaukee is in general. So, you could say that Comet captured the essence of the city and serves it up alongside a delicious bowl of mac & cheese, and a very agreeable music selection. I spent two days in Milwaukee, and ate at probably six or seven different establishments. This was my favorite. The only reason I withheld a star is because the cheesy potato dish was slightly more onion-y than I would have liked, but that's subjective. You may love it, as I did everything else. Bottom line: this place has coffee, beer, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. I recommend it wholeheartedly. read more

With a bit of a classic diner feel to it, you don't necessarily expect an amazing vegan menu when you first step into Comet. When a friend tells you about Comet being a great vegan restaurant, you might not expect them to do meat-atarian dishes all that well. But the food here is excellent across the board. All my vegetarian and/or tofu-loving friends are impressed with the food, and I've sampled multiple meat dishes that have been absolutely delicious. Their tea, beer, and cocktail menu is also excellent, although I can't personally vouch for more than a couple of the drinks. They also have both vegan and regular cupcakes and pies every day, which is pretty damn awesome. If you're trying to get in on a weekend or during a traditional lunch hour, you may want to reserve a table ahead of time, as it can get pretty packed. Even when I went there on a weekday for an early lunch, there were a respectable number of customers in the restaurant. read more

Dairy Allergy Friendly. Great coffee, fun atmosphere, and breakfast was delicious. Having a dairy allergy I struggle to find a breakfast location I can enjoy. Our waiter was knowledgable and very understanding. He was able to put my concerns at ease with his confidence in the menu. My husband and I were able to enjoy a wonderful breakfast together. Fantastic! The pancakes are heavenly! Fresh and hot homemade maple syrup. We ordered the Rocket Platter. Hash browns were so tasty, eggs cooked perfectly and the back was nice and thick. The cappuccino was a huge surprise. Smooth, hot and creamy. Hazlenut cappuccino is a plus. Awesome service with lots of smiles. We were first timers and will definitely be back very soon! read more

let me start with the cons: service is not good. been there quite a few times, and every time, I feel like an afterthought. I know the place is kind of like a glorified diner, but still. also: their menu leaves a bit to be desired. their salad options are as boring as can be imagined. the pros: the best macaroni & cheese I have ever had. any time I see macaroni & cheese on a menu, I order it--no matter what its incarnation may be. even some of the best m&c I've had still needs some salt, or some pepper, and usually some sriracha. this needs nothing, and is best as is. it's amazing. my friend could barely stop eating off my plate. so, there's that. comet is a classic hipster haven (take from that what you will), and is at a pretty good location. worth a try, if you've never been, but just be sure to order the mac & cheese :) read more

Great food and atmosphere! Get the Whittaker beer with your meal! My favorites are the compact turkey dinner or the bacon wrapped meatloaf. Truly a gem of a places stiles you have to wait a long time for a table but it is with every second. I never leave here unsatisfied. read more

If you like hipsters, food, and a cool atmosphere this is the place. Most of the menu items are home-cooked types of things, which to me translates into a menu of things I can't really find anywhere else. The staff are all laid back but hard working, and the cooks haven't done me wrong yet. The only, ONLY thing I don't care for in this place is their Bloody Mary's. I'm a big brunch guy and something in their mix just doesn't do it for me, but the food is worth every penny. read more

Comet cafe is a very cute restaurant. I really love this place because they have options for both vegetarians and vegans. I've been here a few times and I have always had amazing food. It's always hot and presentable. One things that stops my review from being a 5 star is that the staff are not the most engaging. They just take your order and that's it. They aren't rude, but I wouldn't call them extremely nice either. They are just meh. I like when the staff is friendly and engaging, but to others they might want a staff that is in and out with their order. read more

This place is always good. Food is great, drinks are great and the specials are pretty on awesome. The only thing that is a drag sometimes is that table service can be a little slow at times. I understand and I never get mad, but I do usually just accept that table service is probably going to be a little slower before I even get there. But the servers are fun and great. It PAINS me to give anything lower than a 5, but alas, this once vegan hotspots is turning into a dud. No more vegan riblets and no more vegan meatloaf. Those were the best items, and now they are no more. Every other vegan option is rather plain and unimaginative. Not sure why they got rid of it, but I won't be back with what they are serving now. This used to be my go-to spot, but now it is not as vegan friendly for dinner. They have sandwiches, but again, one could easily make those at home as they are basic as heck. The other options are hummus and random soups. Boring! They need new menu items ASAP to revive it dying vegan flair. Otherwise, they just alienated a large group of patrons. read more

I have a love hate relationship with this place, it's a gem of Milwaukee and well known since the waiting lines get pretty long here. So prepare for a little wait during rush hour. That being said, I had diner here on two occasions. The vegan steak is a must. Its so tasty, my companion that never eats vegetarian anything thought it tasted really good. You get a lot of food here, but luckily they give doggy bags. I didn't like the fish and chips, because everything was fried and is heavy on the stomach but the curry-spiced coleslaw was super nice. The turkey diner is just a little bit too much, too chunky for me. The milly cheesesteak is good, it's a upscale version of the Philly alternative with good quality meat. Cup of coffee here is 3$ which is a little expensive. Beer selection is great. read more

I think the TV hype is bigger than it should be, as is the attitude as in "you can't get in here or make a reservation." We went, twice in the past six years, and the food was good but not good enough to stand in line for hours. We live in a high-rise next door and make more than all the students in line. But there are no reservations so we don't go there. read more

Does Comet really need another great review? Probably not. But alas I will try and be an honest broker. Comet's quality of food, from brunch to dinner to dessert is incomparable. That being said you will probably wait a little bit for it and you will pay for it. Comet's service for me has always been on point, I wish I could remember all of my server's names, but not once have I been disappointed. But do not expect the refined polish of a downtown white table cloth place. That being said: I am a third shifter so I am rarely there at peak times. When I have been (think Sat/Sun Brunch) its a mad house, its incredibly busy and the staff does their level best but the task is super human. A good problem born of their deserved success. So before you head to Comet please be aware of what you are getting into: the food is great but it takes time to prepare and is priced accordingly and depending on when you go it may be a circus. My recommendation: Go on an off night or weekday brunch/lunch and enjoy the real charm, personable staff and solid homemade food. read more

I've been coming to Comet long before their new rehab. This place is a wonderful pit stop whether you want just a hot cup of joe or a meal in itself. It is a "hip" cafe but it is not a "hipster-joint". I'm often towing my eighteen month daughter along with me and the servers are more than friendly and accomodating. I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a comfy, cozy place to just relax and get a great meal!! read more

Decided to check out a Triple-D joint while on vacation - the Comet Cafe was everything I would expect from a Guy Fieri'd establishment! They were packed when we arrived, but we found a couple spots at the bar. Bartender was busy, but we never felt it - he took the time to chat, as well as explain the food and drink specials. He suggested a locally distiled gin for a couple drinks (which were great!) and a nice beer too. We ate the double-baked potato (good), my BF had the Thanksgiving Dinner balls (if you don't know what they are, look them up on the menu - it's hilarious and VERY yummy!), and I had the amazing, cheesy homemade mac 'n cheese. We also had their soup d'jour, which was apple/fennel and you would have thought you were sitting in a small 5-star Top Chef restaurant. LOVED IT!! read more
