After eating here, it was easy to see why this is one of the most popular restaurants in Milwaukee. The place definitely has a hipster/diner vibe. Our server was friendly and helpful. We had a 15 minute wait on a Saturday night for 3 people - not too bad. I was a little confused about the vegetarian concept, as the menu had meat and vegetarian options listed together. We found ourselves wondering if we had ordered meat or not. For an appetizer we got the "ribs" (not real meat). They were fried and came with fries, as well as some good dipping sauces. The Compact Turkey Dinner (real meat) was excellent - would definitely order again. That kale though that came as a side... incredible. Didn't know kale could taste like that! The prices were reasonable except perhaps for the banana cream pie that we got for dessert for about $6-7. However, it was so delicious I'd order it again in a heartbeat. read more

Reuben sandwich: Taste was not disappointing but the corned beef was not up to par. Seemed like this individual, thinner, slices of corned beef were fried on a grill. Pretty tough and not juicy at all. Cream of tomato soup was good but the pour for a bowl was inconsistent with what I had in the past. The wait staff ladles it so you have everybody giving different amounts of soup. Mine was on the slight side. Not worth the extra dollar. I've been here twice and both times the food was fantastic. The first time I came here I got the bacon wrapped meatloaf and mashed potatoes, the meatloaf was to die for. The second time I came for breakfast and got the traditional eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast and the hash browns were delicious! Definitely my favorite part. The only suggestion I have is avoid sitting and ordering at the bar. We waited over 20 minutes for our bill & asked 2 other people (other than our sever) who wouldn't help us. I also noticed the server didn't write down my order and had forgotten the side of bacon I ordered. I realize it can get pretty busy behind the bar but once our food came we were pretty neglected up until we left. read more

This is all about managing expectations. I was really expecting a whole lot more than I got because of the fantastic pub this place gets. But, while I liked it, I was not throwing hyperbole at them with abandon after eating there. Had to go with the tomato soup and it was okay. Yep, just okay. It tasted like Campbell's with milk added--just like mom made. I drank about half the bowl. I then had the Beer City Hot Brown sandwich. Got it without the cheese. Turkey tasted fresh and the gravy was very good. Bread was a little spongy and did not cut well so you ended up with big glops of bread pulling out from under the sandwich. But, that's okay. It was also happy hour and had a couple of Tom Collins. Talk about throw-back. It took awhile for the drinks to come, but they were tasty and well made. I was happy, so Happy Hour was a success! I've been here twice now for brunch and have been very pleased both times. This time I had an omelet with cheese and bacon, which was delicious. My boyfriend was more ambitious and had one of the specials of the day: Mel Gibson vs The British (it was a July 4-themed special). It involved pork and a sausage patty and some other stuff all piled into a sandwich, and he loved it. On my first trip I tried the commuter sandwich and was stuffed. In addition to their food menu, they have extensive coffee bar and alcohol menus. We had to wait to get in this time, but even though it was prime brunch hour on a holiday, it was only about 10 minutes. Once we were in, our server took exceptional care of us and was incredibly friendly. I plan to make this place a mandatory visit any time I'm in Milwaukee. read more

We decided to try them out because they were on Foodnetwork with Guy Fieri...first off, the wait was pretty long but kind of expected because they were on tv...but once we got seated, we wanted to order a bottle of wine...ordered a red one and I tasted it and it was not good so I asked for something lighter...tried it and it tasted worse...so just went with white wine... We then ordered our food...my husband ordered the meatloaf entree because it was on tv...well first it did not look like that...it was burnt...and then it was dry and the brussel sprouts were gross...I guess they are beer battered... I ordered a salad with tuna...it was not worth paying an extra 5 bucks for the tuna...it was dry and hard...I have had so much better...at least everything else in the salad was okay... I went back to give this place another chance. My girlfriend (ex) and I though it was good, but not great. Not worth waiting 30 minutes to get a table. The food was "cute" and creative, but not out-worldly. Had I built this place up in my head too much? Me thinks not, as my girlfriend (ex) said she would never go there again. Prices were high, service was slow, and her food was actually COLD, send back once, came back cold. Best food you can get anywhere in Milwaukee. The atmosphere is very chill and the servers are very nice. My only problem is, it is very overpriced for my taste and depending on when you go, there are usually a lot of flies buzzing around you while you eat which is very obnoxious. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Milwaukee. As a vegetarian, I have found the cheesy tomato w/ added vegan field roast meat to be my go-to. My husband swears by the Ahi Tuna. In addition to my cheesy tomato staple, there are plenty of other tasty vegetarian dishes and many things can be made veggie. Also, great beer selection. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast a few weeks ago and we didn't care much for the food. Had I written a review after that visit, I probably would have given it a 2 star rating. I've been here a few times and I have never had a complaint about the food. I last visited for brunch and had the bacon cakes. YUP, bacon pancakes! They're huge plate-sized pancakes with bacon bits cooked inside (and blueberry jam to go along with it). DELICIOUS. I'm just not a fan of how busy and packed it always is inside. I visited Milwaukee in May of 2014 and was looking for a spot to eat around breakfast time. We took a chance on this little cafe called the Comet on the east side after reading the reviews on YELP. For those of you visiting from LA, if that's possible, it might remind you of Venice a little...okay maybe not. Nonetheless, the food wasn't bad, the service is great and they have vegetarian options. We had the Kelly scramble (vegan), mmmmm tasty. The Blood Mary came with a small Miller High Life, nice touch. The Comet Cafe was recommended to us by a server from Mader's Restaurant earlier in the day. She recommended the cafe if you really like hamburgers. Comet Cafe is a dive, but a good dive. I did find it funny that we had to check ourselves in, but this is a busy place and luckily we did not have to wait too long. Their specialty is comfort food and craft beers.It appears to be run by young whippersnappers who know how to run a place like this. It looks as if its broken up into two areas: one for food and one for drinks. At 9pm, the kitchen closes; but if you get in before then, they should till feed you. The bar is open much later as they close around 2:00am every night. For my meal, I had the small house salad with ranch and a Big Luck Hamburger with fries. The small house salad is ANYTHING but small, just FYI - you get a great portion of salad for your buck! The Big Luck was just that -- BIG. Basically is was 6oz of Wisconsin grass-fed beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and Thousand Island on an egg-glazed bun. HUGE and delicious. Just a about a dollar or so over-priced. It was a little tough-and-go at first with getting refills on water, but eventually, things worked out and we recv'd steady service. It was a BUSY Sunday night, no less. But service was smooth after that. Also, they supply lunches to the students at Escuela Verde in the area - so that's great to know as well! This place serves diner food and I have yet to be disappointed. It is fairly casual and a good place for food and drinks. It is one of the more vegan friendly places in town so I particularly recommend it for vegans or mixed diet groups. In addition the customer service is great. The set up of this place is interesting. It's half diner, half bar. Literally. The menu is solid, fresh and makes every attempt to locally source. We tried Comet this past Sunday after reading the reviews. I have to say, not sure what all the hype is about. We waited 15 minutes on a Sunday around 1:30pm. Not really any space to wait on a cold day. Got seated and then waIted for the waitress to greet us. And waited. It took our server Erika about 15 minutes to approach our table and ask if we wanted anything to drink. I kept watching all these servers walking around and suspected Erika was assigned to us just because of placement. I was on the verge of asking the hostess if we had a server. We were literally sat next to her so she knew we were just sitting there with our menus selections already made, menus down. I read the menus 4 times. There's not that many selections. I'm a patient person, at least approach us and ask if we want coffee or something. Refilling water glasses while new patrons wait, is out of step. The food itself.... was ok. I wouldn't wait in line for it, which explains why several people walked in and saw the wait and left. The food wasn't very inventive or interesting. Apparently a 2005 Food Network visit changed their life. I can't conceive of why. That was also 16 years ago. Maybe the glory days are over. read more

This place is not actively terrible. It's a passive kind of terrible; it's a gentle wave of awfulness that ebbs and flows and wears you down. I had never heard of this place. I Googled best breakfast in Milwaukee and it came up highly recommended, especially for vegetarians, which my dining partner is. After a long wait in the sun the understandably harried hostess told us we could sit wherever we wanted at the bar, and then asked us to move for a first time. (There would later be a second.) They're famous for their Bloody Mary's, so I was inclined to have one, but I asked the bartender what went into the drink. She didn't know. Turns out she just pours it from a pitcher, and has no clue what goes into them. The pitchers are understandable at brunch time, but the bartender telling me about garnish when I ask about the recipe doesn't inspire much confidence. Then began the long wait for the food, punctuated by unsolicited butting in on our conversation, answering questions we didn't ask, and unfulfilled requests for more water. Finally the food comes. It's fine. We need to request everything from salt shakers to butter to maple syrup. I'm wondering why the maple syrup goes everywhere, and then realize they gave me a bottle with the lid unscrewed. This long tale ends with the bartender taking my food away before I'm done, so not with a bang but with a whimper. read more

The accumulation of grease is thoroughly disgusting. This probably gives an accurate depiction of what the Comet kitchen looks like. The last manager occasionally cleaned it up, the guy before him did not. Not sure what this manager is thinking. Make sure you take off your shoes before you enter your home. My partner and I ended up here due to not making it in time to Strange Town before their kitchen closed. It's in a pretty hip and trendy area, had a cool ambiance, and had good reviews, so we were excited to try it. We felt it was just average. The service wasn't great - our server was sort of rude to us at the beginning and made it hard for us to warm up to them. There are plenty of vegan options but they were pretty bland. We had the "turkey" dinner and Mac and cheese. The Mac lacked flavor and I had to drown it in salt and pepper. I think the steamed broccoli was the best part of our dinner.
