My home warranty company sent them out in the spring to do a preventative pre-season AC tune up on a rental property. They suggested some fairly pricey repairs, my tenants mentioned the answers they gave for the outage were unclear, and I also couldn't get a straight answer. Anyhow, I paid for the tune up and the additional repairs they suggested. A week later the system breaks down, and they come back out. I pay for some more work, and they go about their way. A couple months later my system goes down again, and the warranty company sends out separate repair company. Turns out "someone" had previously bypassed a portion of the system, causing me to have a short and $525 in additional repairs. I had no problems with my system prior to Comfort Star showing up, had poor communication, got charged an arm and a leg, and was left with a faulty system. After I questioned it, Comfort Star was unclear and couldn't give a straight answer on the issue with the repair. They gave false information to the warranty company. I own a business so I know the level of standard I hold my own employees and technicians. I sent a request to Comfort Star on their website outlining the issue and they responded within a few hours and said they could have someone out the same day. I wasn't available same day so I scheduled the following late afternoon. Dispatch called me back and let me know that the tech could be there early afternoon if needed - this worked out perfect and he was right on time. The technician (Bert), was one of the most professional and knowledgeable technicians (at any company I have dealt with). In addition to diagnosing and correcting the issue, he gave me a great introduction to Comfort Star and outlined all of the services offered and their capabilities ... never seemed salesy or like he was trying to push anything, just 100% professional technical company representation. We have used Comfort Star for about a year now. They were sent by the home warranty company and we now request them by name. They have always responded really quickly to any calls, which is especially important when your A/C suddenly goes out in July. Two friends and I have moved our service contracts over to Comfort Star. Had a terrible experience with them. My home warranty company assigned them to our case and they came out. First thing, right of the bat, the technician (Edgar) says that this is a big problem and is going to cost us a lot of money, with just a minimal check. Then he proceeds to tell me that the government has mandated that everyone moves to the new AC standard by next year (2017) so no point in wasting money now. Better to replace both units with the new models. Later when he saw I wasn't too keen on this, he changed his approach and said it's probably 2020 that it becomes mandatory so you're ok for a few years. If this was the worst part, I would be ok. But what makes it worse, is that he misdiagnosed part of the problem. we have 2 AC's and he said both of the coils were gone and needed replacement and both were the cause of faulty installation. Because of that, the home warranty wouldn't cover them but if I made him a deal with him on the spot to get both done, he would give me a price break and get the money from the warranty company. Extremely fishy. Told him I would think about it, so he goes ahead and gives the home warranty company his report and naturally they dont' cover anything. He then tries to call his manager to get me a deal anyways (even though he's now reported to the home warranty company). His 'deal' wasn't so great and I didn't go for it and he left. Got a second opinion and turns out he was wrong about his assessment and the second opinion got my home warranty to cover the costs! Got the problem resolved in about 1/10th of the cost that Edgar had quoted, with help from the home warranty company covering parts and labor. Granted it wasn't 2 brand new coils (just one), but the other was repaired and is working great. He also disconnected both fuses before leaving so we couldn't use it. Overall he was extremely pushy, gave wrong information, didn't take the time to explain things properly and worst of all, misdiagnosed the problem causing me to nearly miss out on the coverage from the home warranty. Would not recommend these guys! *Update (Nov. 2016): The owner of Comfort Star (Mr. Habib) contacted me directly through Yelp and called me as well. He was extremely apologetic for my experience and genuinely wanted to learn what happened and what is going on in his company. I was very appreciative of his call. He was very genuine and told me to call him if I ever needed anything. I still had the terrible experience with the bad technician (mentioned above), but I was impressed with the owner and his attitude towards the whole thing. He seems like a good person. The company may also be good (looking at the other positive reviews) with a few bad apple technicians. I might consider using them again, but would talk to the owner and make sure to get a good technician the next time. read more

Very disappointing. I have a home protection plan, and Comfort Star was assigned to my case. The gentleman showed up over two hours after he called and told me he was on his way. He spent 90 minutes at my house; at one point I went outside to see what he was doing, and he was sleeping in his van. My AC started blowing hot air last night (two months later). My home protection plan company sent another company out, and I had to get my receipt from the Comfort Star visit to prove that I was charged for freon. Can't say enough good things about Habib and his team. Two days ago they completely overhauled our aging A/C HVAC systems installing new units outside the house as well as in the attic with new ducts, grills. I mean everything was replaced. Needless to say they came to my house on time and the job was finished on time, just like Habib promised same day. It was raining really hard from the night before up until that same morning, yet the crew showed a lot of respect to our home constantly adjusting runners on main floor as well as carpeted stairs leading to the second floor attic. Very impressive. What we liked about Habib is his desire not only make us comfortable in our home but also make it as efficient in a long run as possible. We installed 2 speed A/C unit with a dual zoning. It is a complicated job, yet Habib made the whole process easy, being flexible with our schedule and being truthful. After our home warranty service denied my claim to replace leaking evaporator coils, I called Comfort Star to save me from the excruciating heat of summer in Houston. Edgar came out the same day, checked out both A/C units and offered three options. He spent a lot of time explaining the pros & cons of each option & patiently answered all of my questions. After reviewing all the info, we decided to replace both units. All the techs were very friendly, polite, professional & showed up when they said they would. I am very impressed with the service provided by Comfort Star. Last night, we noticed the baseboards underneath the air conditioning unit were wet. We opened the unit and saw a pool of water. We called Comfort Star the next morning, and a technician was at our home in hours. Edgar quickly diagnosed the problem, unclogged the draining pipe, and installed a sensor that will alert us if water ever starts to collect again. The first sensor he tried didn't end up fitting. He decided to use a second type of sensor and, to do so, had to work for another hour. He solved the problem and didn't charge for the extra labor. I was extremely impressed with how committed Edgar was to finding a solution and getting the job done right. I trust him completely, and am confident that he has done quality work at an affordable price. He is friendly and kind. So is there not a way to give zero stars? We had floorboards start to bubble in the living room and the culprit was the AC drain pipe. It was not connected to anything so for the six months we had lived in the house the AC was simply dripping underneath our tub. 25 gallons of water came out from under the tub. Comfort Star was who the warranty company sent and was also the AC company who last checked out the system before we moved in. I guess I assumed when they put on the invoice that the drains were "Ok" that it meant the drains were okay. Clearly they weren't and one of the co-owners came out and said he would get back to me on how they could help. Of course, he didn't get back to me and I called and called and finally got a hold of him so he could say it wasn't their fault. Ridiculous that a drain check doesn't include actually checking to see where the drain outflows to. In case Comfort Star reads this, we're still waiting on your letter stating why you think you weren't at fault. If I could give this company a zero I would. Our warranty company sent our case to them and they called me this morning to schedule an appointment. It was scheduled for today between noon and 4:00 p.m. I had a day packed full at work so I re-arranged everything to clear out this afternoon so I could meet them because it's 85 degrees in my house and an AC not working in Houston heat is a serious priority (not to Comfort Star however). I came home at noon and have been sitting here waiting for them in the heat and they just called at 12:45 to tell me they won't be able to make it today and will have to re-schedule for 2 days from now. The girl on the phone was mono-tone and acted as if she could care less. I absolutely recommend never using this company!!! read more

Don't use Comfort Star unless you're willing to pay a bill that has ridiculously inflated prices. I used Comfort Star because they are one of several contractors used by OneGuard, my home warranty company. Comfort Star found a leak in the evaporator coil which had to be replaced. My out-of-pocket bill was $765 because Comfort Star "padded" the bill to the home warranty company and categorized charges in such a way that they were not covered by the warranty. To make matters worse, those charges were significantly inflated. More specifically, Comfort Star charged me $320 for plenum modifications and there weren't any modifications because the new coil was exactly the same size as the old coil that was replaced. Comfort Star also categorized 3 items as "code items" which are not covered by the warranty company. Those items included a float switch for $195 (typically a $60 item at most) which they insisted is a new requirement, $125 for Arma Flex insulation, and $125 for mastic seal ($25 at Home Depot). I called Comfort Star at least 5 times asking for more information and an explanation on the ridiculous charges, but never got a call back. After waiting 1-1/2 weeks without air conditioning, I finally gave up and agreed to pay the $765. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY IF YOU CAN AVOID IT. read more
