This place is in my top two spots for comics in San Francisco. Their selection of independant comics is second to none. The staff selections of new and independant comics has helped to broaden my taste in graphic novels. The new releases are at the back, and the other shelves are devoted to graphic novels and back issues. The store isn't really in my neighborhood but I drop in every two weeks or so for the new independants. I'm a fan of the cool artwork they have up in the window. read more

This is my favorite comic shop of all time. The selection of comics and graphic novels is stupendous, from the mainstream Marvel/DC stuff to small indie titles. The store is spacious, and everything is ORGANIZED. I hate walking into a store and having to sift through piles on the ground. I even enjoy how it's organized, with special sections for recommendations and genre specialties. The service here is reasonable. I've always pretty much seen the same guy behind the counter. If I have a question, he'll give me a reasonable amount of feedback. I would not call the place social. The staff give you space, but I've never been put off by this approach. I would often stop in here after hanging out at GameScape down the way. Parking can be a bit of an issue, but hey, that's the City. It's also an easy walk to a lot of other cool things to see. read more

Initially, I was a little scared to try this place out. I'd tried three different shops to make my regular one, and if this one didn't work out, I'd be pretty disillusioned with the comic community in SF. Luckily, this seemed to be my place. Although, part of me wishes they kept back issues, but the inner more economically minded part of me is glad that they don't, else I'd be spending more than I usually do and I already spend too much. The guy who I presume to own this place is just like Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons, but once in a while you can catch him in a not so awful mood and he will smile. There's a long haired woman who works here that I absolutely adore, and the other guy and girl who work here are also extremely friendly. I won't name names of other comic shops, but this seems to be a facet of small business that others have forgotten. The shop is always clean and they usually always have the stuff I need (I know, I just said 'need' in a review of a comic shop instead of 'want', but you guys get me, right?) unless it's a hugely in-demand series, in which case get there on Wednesdays or you are hosed! And I don't know what the guy below was talking about, them not having bags & boards, because all you have to do is ask for them and they let you pick out how many you want from the box at the end of the counter. The only reason it isn't a 5 star is because of the back issue thing, but I know it's probably in my best interest that they don't have any. read more

So here's the thing, I went to this store on a whim and I asked the owner to hold some comics for me. Sense then, he's remembered my name, my likes and dislikes, and says hello to me whenever I go in... Plus, there the only store in this city who carries my favorite comic book artist/writer, the Norwegian cartoonist Jason. This store also functions as a reverse to Amazing Fantasy, it's more into the Vertigo, Image, and Dark Horse comics as opposed to Marvel and DC, so it's great if your into the more indy comics. read more

I've been going to Comix Experience for a couple years now and it's definitely my favorite in the city. I trek out from ocean beach to the store bi-weekly. They usually have what I'm looking for, and I've never had an unpleasant experience with the people working the counter. Plus, it's right down the street from the Beanbag Cafe. The latest issues and a good beer. Who could ask for more? The only downside is that I haven't had a proper conversation with the cute asian girl yet. read more

For Indie comics and graphic novels, Comix Experience is legendary in San Francisco. For years, I lived blocks away from the store and was able to stop in each week to pick up my books, and more importantly, get the newsletter. The newsletter, actually a multi-page booklet, had reviews of upcoming comics and an order form which listed most of the popular comics on it. As a subscriber, I would fill out which comics I wanted, turn in the form and then the comics would be pulled every week. However, when I moved back from Europe this time, I didn't end up in the Lower Haight, instead moving near the ballpark. This in itself made going all the way out to Divisadero a pain in the backside, but adding in a new job that requires a good amount of travel made it almost impossible to ensure I would even make it into the store more than once a month, making it difficult to ensure I would get the newsletter each month to fill out the form in time. Because of this, I cancelled my account. If your schedule allows weekly visits, or you just need a quick indie fix, you could do much worse than Comix Experience. read more

Forget what anyone else says. If you're in the market for a real comic book store (read: one that doesn't sell toys and pokemon cards) this is the place for you. While the staff might come off as a little surly at first, they're actually really helpful and friendly. They've been here for over 17 years and know their stuff inside and out. Need a suggestion? Chat them up for a bit about what you like to read and they send you out the door with at least $100 worth of awesome stuff. One of the few places to get the best indie comics in the city, and if you're a metalhead, the owner will be a friend for life if you simply take the time to get get to know him and talk about music and the virtues of Alan Moore. Case in point: Brian took my name down on a freebie that he didn't get shipped on time and promptly gave it to me by name the next time I dropped in (weeks later), even though I'm not exactly a regular there. read more

There is no way that you can live in SF and be a comic book fan and not check out Comix Experience. It's sort of a mecca of local comic book shops...seriously (or as serious as you can take a guy who debates about people who fly and wear spandex). I don't have a subscription service through them at the moment but when I did the service was great and you get a 10% future discount based on the money that you have spent using the subscription service. In my experience the staff has been knowledgeable and helpful if I say "I like so-and-so artist/writer, what would you recommend?" The indy comic selection is quite good and they have all the other TPBs, random action figures, t-shirts that are normally associated with comic book shopping. They seem to be out of long boxes frequently so if your comic book tower problem is mission critical you might be disappointed. They have a bargain bin where there are collected runs of particular titles or characters bundled together at a rather steep discount. Rob, one of the staff, is into video games and I enjoy chatting it up with him about how much of my life I'm wasting trying to level up. He's a cool guy. The owner, Brian Hibbs, writes a regular column on comic retailing on Newsarama called "Tilting at Windmills" and there is also a blog called the "Savage Critic" that can be found on the Comix Experience web site that has lots of reviews by the staff in varying degrees of snark and fanboy hallelujahs. Overall, a great place to go to get comics. Awhile back someone hit a parked car in front of the store and almost sent the car through the front window. That's kind of weird, isn't it? read more

Comix Experience has been a regular stop for me over the last five years (ever since I started working in San Francisco, really). It's usually fairly easy to find parking, and they have an amazing selection of graphic novels, comics, magazines, etc. Best collection of indy/alternative comics in the city. Be sure to check out the monthly newsletter, which features great write-ups of comics in your future. The blog The Savage Critic(s) is a favorite as well, thanks in no small part to non-employee Graeme McMillan's weekly reviews (he also writes for the newsletter). If you want to find a bigger selection of graphic novels, you need to head over to Comic Relief in Berkeley. If you want back issues, go down the peninsula to Lee's Comics in San Mateo and Mountain View. Otherwise, Comix Experience is your best bet. I hesitate to enter into the debate over Comix Experience vs. Isotope. Is it wrong that I actually like both? read more

The three of us landed to this Divisadero Comic bookstore to read the newest comics and check out their new and cool stuff. Would you guessed that Matt came to read the newest Captain America comic, in which Matt's compadre was fatally shot in front of the New York City Courthouse. Matt was shedding tears and crying, while reading the latest issue and learned how Captain America supposedly died. The kids hurriedly attentively and shown concern for daddy and asked him, "Daddy, why are you crying?" Matt in tears showed the picture of the death of Captain America to the kids and then the worker asked, "Is everything OK?" Matt in sob, asking, "Yes, (sniff), I'll buy this newest issue from Captain America, also do you have a kleenex?" read more

This is the first place I've ever subscribed to comics at. I've always been wary about getting trapped and getting stuck with a bombing series. SO the month to month thing here is ideal. Supposedly it will still be good when they get the computer system up. So yea, they have lots of stuff here. I usually find what I need. They tend to favor the cape and cowl stuff more than the Slave Labor stuff I like. In fact, often I miss series and have to get the stuff at APE or on the series of tubes. But the people here are friendly and there is usually a lively conversation going on here. Just don't use your cell phone here. they hate that. for some reason. read more

Good selection of comics and books from major publishers and indies alike. This store reminds me a bit of the now-defunct Comic Relief in Berkeley (my former favorite before it moved from University St. to Shattuck Ave.) I love they way the store is organized - it's the first comic book shop I've been to that uses the taxonomy I would use. (Funny that at least one other Yelper complains about this very format!) One of the best laid out shops I've seen. Sections are labeled by author and niche interest like Vertigo, Crime, Alternative, Tween, so on and so forth. Makes browsing easy if you're looking to delve into a particular author's canon. The store's selection seems to be pretty diverse. They also have "Starter Bundles" of comics for people looking for quick yet thorough insight into a particular subsection of comics. I like also the store's decor. The comic cut outs in the front window are often hilarious tongue in cheek jabs at nerdom. Also the staff is nice. The clerk recommended Vertigo's Criminal series where each book in the series offers a self contained story within a larger diegesis that shares characters and overlaps. The first installment "Coward" was dope. This a great little shop and since it's blocks from my home it's now my great little shop. read more

Comix Experience is run by nice folks and is a great place to browse. Once Isotope was my favorite comic shop in the city, but now I've come to appreciate the lower-key atmosphere of this place. Nobody bugs you if you want to wander around, but they're helpful if you have questions. Also, the store is organized in a way more intuitive way for me--with shelves dedicated to certain imprints, genres, and creators. The kind of comic store that you can wonder around and find a whole slew of things to read. I like the different ways of organizing the comics: My wife was in the hospital and she's been reading Sandman for the first time, so the Neil Gaiman section grabbed my eye - I was able to grab the new children's book Instructions from him. I like when comic stores show complete respect for the creators, not just the titles. I had a good conversation about both new Avengers stuff and independent stuff - It is the kind of joint that "loves them all" rather than being snooty. Very nice. read more

The service here is good enough and the lady who runs is very friendly, but the place just has a weird vibe to it. Also, their comic book selection is just middle of the road. What really made me give this place 2 stars was that fact that the way their books are organized is terrible. Trades and comic books are mish-mashed all together and their alphabetical ordering leaves something to be desired. This place isn't bad, just not great. I've shopped in comic stores all over the world, and CE is by far my favorite. The store is clean, well-lighted and organized. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. What more could you possibly ask for from *any* retail establishment? The books are out there and available to read, not bagged and boarded and sealed so you can't even see what you're buying. My comic book shop, even though I moved out of the neighborhood AND work for a bookselling company and so could totally get all the bound graphic novels at a way better discount. The selection has gotten way better since I started going a couple of years ago, and the staff is awesome about making recommendations based on what you like. The people who work there are true comic geeks, and that's the most important part-- the whole point of brick and mortor bookshops is the booksellers, and the staff at Comix Experience exemplify that. read more

This is "the" comic book shop on the the other side of the bay. I remember when I first went here, it was in 1989, and the owner was handing out discount flyers while we were in line to watch Batman at the nearby theater.... I haven't been there in years, but when Rory (from Comic Relief) passed away, the owner had some kind words, and from the recesses of my mind I remembered my first experience at this store. ...With the flyer, I remember buying some som back issues of Alpha Flight and some Batman merch, cause of all the hype from the movie at the time. Wow... nostalgia and good memories for me... I'm definitely gonna come visit again soon. This along with The Funny Papers on Geary, were my favorite comic shops in SF. read more

After years of intermittent visits, I moved to the neighborhood. After a few visits they had memorized my name and say hello when I walk in! Wow! So I set up a subscription to a few comics and they always have them ready for me. Easy! I like the back wall area where all the new comics are everyweek. Putting them all together makes it easy to tell if anything came out that I might want, rather than having to hunt through the whole store each week. The heavy set man with long hair was extreamly rude as soon as I walked in I used to come to this shop over 10 years ago and loved it, so I made a point of visiting now that I came back to the city. I will not come again because this man was so rude. I hope for the young girls sake that he only works there he is not the owner so he can be fired if enough people complain. read more

Graphic novels and collections are well-curated and pretty comprehensive, sorted by publisher, artist and major artist. This is one of my favorite places to buy comics. The main guy who works here is hilarious and always double checks my comics before I buy to make sure they're all in good shape. They always have what I'm looking for , and don't have tons of crappy toys and other junk that get in the way of the comics. Esp. great if you like Fantagraphics titles. read more
