This is the store I've been going to, but I think I'm going to start going to Isotope instead. The long haired radio DJ dude is kind of moody and you never know if he's going to be nice to you or make you feel stupid if you ask a question. They stock a nice range of indie comics as well as all the usual superhero suspects, so no complaints there. read more

Comix Experience appears to be one of bigger SF comic stores, which I suspect allows for a nice selection of trade paper and hard backs. I ate up the 100 Bullets noir series here, one after another. The store was well stocked for my latest addiction, which I'm grateful for because when I get into Instant Gratification mode, it's hard to wait for special orders. The long haired dude behind the counter was also very knowledgeable and helpful when I was looking for books written by Warren Ellis. During football season, I can tell who's winning the 49ers game by listening to his colorful commentary. But it's not hard to figure what side of the Win/Loss column the 49er's are on these days. read more

We came here back on Free Comic Book Day and were quite happy with how the handled it. We ended up purchasing a few other comic books as well and they were more than happy to help us with another comic book that we were looking for. When I lived nearby I had my subscriptions through them, they have a 10% discount system for subscribers and a monthly newsletter written by the staff keeping you up to date. First off, Comix Experience is the only comic book store you'll find in SF until you get to Isotope in the Outer Sunset. So it's a damn good thing it doesn't suck. I asked Rob one time about more Paul Pope comics. Next time I was there, all the THB and 100% were on the shelves. They have the Vertigo and Alan Moore books on the right just as you come in, and although they must make a good percentage of their money on superhero stuff, they make a good effort to push alternative and indie comics when they can. The selection is not as wide as Comic Relief, but they know their stuff. read more

As an avid collecter of comics, one knows you have to check everywhere for issues, because nobody has everything. This place is one of those places to add to your list. Their selection of comics is incredible, ranging from the mainstream stuff to the more outcast-like comics. This place is the place to check out. They have various different genres of comics and books that make this place an absolute gold mine for a lot of reasons. They tend to mark up their older issue of comics that are harder to find, but that's understandable. read more

Unsurprisingly, being new to reading comics means I'm rather awkward when it comes to picking out my reading material. That being said, I always have a just lovely time at Comix Experience! They recently did an awesome reorganization, so I tend to grab my new single issues, then scan around to see what piques my interest, and finally ask for recommendations. Their staff is ON IT - mentioned I liked a comic that only had 2 volumes, the latter of which came out over 2 years ago, and was ecstatic to hear new issues will be out in about 6 months. Good service and quality product keeps local places like this alive. And bonus points for just selling comics - keeps the shop less cluttered. read more

Loved this store! It's small, but it's laid out cleanly and simply and not overstuffed with t-shirts, toys and other nonsense. There's a shelf in the middle with staff recommendations, and the employee was happy to suggest a couple graphic novels. There's another shelf full of indie, weird, semiautobiographical type books (think Linda Barry and Alison Bechdel). Of course there are classics - Image, Marvel, DC, Vertigo if you want your superheroes and trades. Also super affordable, I got two graphic novels for $20! read more

I stopped in here to shop for a christmas present and left very satisfied. The guy behind the counter was helpful, polite, and respectful. Where I don't buy nearly as many comics as I would like, I have a general sense of what is happening in the two major universes, and he quickly and adeptly brought me up to speed with some welcomed recommendations thrown in. I can't believe the reviews where people diss the people working there. I have always been extremely impressed by the knowledge of the workers here -- you're not walking into a jewelry store, people. This was my favorite comic book store when I lived in SF (ok, so it doesn't hold a candle to Comic Relief in Berkeley, but . . .). It's smallish, but the amount of queer and underground comix that they carry is truly amazing and the guys who work there are super nice and will really help you out if you can't find something obscure. read more

This place is great! Out here for the Image Expo and me and my buddies were looking for a good local spot to check out. It was easy to find. Had a GREAT selection from the big 2 stuff but really loved the other options.... Image comics, manga, zine type books. Great shop; organized very well and the chick working was very nice to chat with. When I'm back in town visiting this will be my go to again. read more

This is probably the greatest comic shop in the universe. Clean and well organized with female superheros decorating the outside walls and incredibly knowledgeable lady geeks inside, Comix Experience is a nerd safe space. No judgmental neckbeards or patronizing m'ladies in sight. Great for kids, too, with an island full of stuff just for them right up front when you come in. My go-to comics store. It's close to where I work, so it's convenient to run up the street and grab a book or two on my lunch break. People here are nice, they don't hover, let you browse to your heart's content. They have very little to no back issues, but their graphic novel selection more than makes up for that. read more

Ok, I read comics. Sue me. They're awesome. The one problem with reading comics, besides the obvious, is having to put up with the Comic Store Employee. You know what I mean (WORST. PURCHASE. EVER!!!). Thankfully, Comix Experience has never given me any attitude no matter what stupid superhero book I buy every time I'm in there. Even better is that the store is organized in a way that actually makes sense so you can find exactly what you're looking for *coughisotopecough*. My second least favorite comic store in San Francisco. I've been a comic book collector for over 30 years, and have been to a ton of comic stores in multiple states...and, sadly, this place in my home town is the epitome of "Comic Book Guy" from the Simpsons. I always find the employees generally unfriendly and disinterested, which is something I find unforgivable when you work in a place that should be welcoming and resound with enthusiasm for the merchandise. Also, I had NEVER been in a comic store with a $10 minimum restriction on credit card use...until I went into Comix Experience. This is the biggest reason they lose my business, even when I have a purchases larger than $10. It's offensive to the customer. Sometimes you just want $8.00 worth of comics and don't have cash on you! (My least favorite store in the city is the only other comic store I know of in San Francisco that has this restriction.) The only reason I wouldn't give them "0" stars, even if I could, is because they do have a decent selection of collected volumes. But, really, there are several far better stores in the city with just as much--if not more--selection. Bottom line....you can find a far better comic store experience in San Francisco. read more

They have a gret variety of different types of comics as well as sets to a game I recently bought. I tried to leave only buying one item but left with four instead. Im definitely coming back next week to check out their new issues and just browse to pick up a new series as well. read more

I'm new to comic books and graphic novels but this store keeps me coming back. I initially came in to pick out a birthday present for my boyfriend and got sucked in to the paperback neil gaiman books. And then I was hooked! Their selection is varied, and they don't seem to be at all snobby to someone new to the industry. Love this spot. read more

I've never hidden my love of comics. I wear that Scarlet Letter (C) proudly. I am a geek, hear me type??!?!? So, when I am needing the occasional influx of all things comics, I'll swing by Comix Experience which is one of the most centrally located shops in the city. Before we go any further, I am going to let you in on a secret: Not all comics are about people running around in spandex and capes. There are comics that cover the very same topics and issues that you would find in modern literature. That is where Comix Experience excels. They have a great independent selection. Independent meaning essentially everything not published by Marvel or DC. Another great thing about this particular shop is the way they organize their books. In addition to organizing the books by title they also separate them by writer and artist. This way gives credit to comics as an art form and is another step towards acceptance in modern culture. Not that we really care what you non-geeks think. read more

great comic shop. the owner brian knows pretty much everything about comics and is there most days. they have a huge selection of comics and trades from the big publishers down to small, indie books. if there is something you want that they dont have, they are happy to order it for you. and if you subscribe and get a weekly pull box, they will give you 10% back! read more

i am new to the world of comics, alas, i have been sucked in to a coupla series- The Preacher and The Boys by Garth Ennis et. al. by Vertigo and Dynamite publishers. maybe tmi, all i know is that when i mention that i am reading a comic to my nerdy friends, they ask me who wrote it and who publishes it, so there you go if you are wondering. Well, this is my favorite comic store so far. the folks are nice and helpful, not like comic book guy from the simpsons. geez, i don't know what to say except that whether or not i buy something there i always anticipate coming back for when something new will be in. I was able to pick up Berni Wrightsons BEAUTIFUL rendition of Mary Shelly Wollenscraft's Frankenstein. Bernie Wrightson is the original artistic creator of Swamp Thing, btw. Wow! i found my dorky friends comic here! called peepeehed. so they support the young independent artists. thanks for not shunning me for being a comic novice you guys! you have my business! oh, parking is tough, public transit is abundant, and the block that it is on smells like wonderful ripening fruit because of the small produce market next door. thanks for reading! read more

went back today and was told yet again that something i wanted was "out of print" so i finally asked what this meant. and it turns out that, indeed, i had no clue what "out of print" means in comic book land, and that this employee had been giving me completely accurate information all these years (despite my ability to go home and find things available on Amazon). and she was really nice about explaining this all to me. my bad times a billion. read more

The only time that I've ever really been here is when I don't make it in on Wednesday to my normal comic shop and I miss out on one or two of the weeks issues, hoping to find it here. I'm pretty into the normal DC/Marvel superhero stuff, and some of the Vertigo/Dark Horse stuff as well. I am not, nor have I ever desired to be an afficianado of indie comics. This is a problem if you plan to ever buy comics here. One thing that I've always enjoyed about going to comic book shops is that usually the people that work there are really into comics and will generally bullshit with you about stuff like "I dunno, I'm sure Steve Rogers will be back soon" or "Batman's not REALLY dead". These guys want nothing to do with you if you wanna talk about that kinda stuff. It's not really their job, so I'll take one star off since 5 is my IDEAL comic store. 1 star gets taken off because they not only don't like superhero comics, they actually seem offended that you're asking them where you can find the newest Uncanny X-Men, and basically throw the comics at you when you're done paying for them. And finally, 1 star gets taken off because it's very important that a comic shop is enjoyable to be in, this is full of self-righteous indie kids and the atmosphere is dry at best. Comic shops are one of the very few places that are important to keep friendly, inviting, and imaginative. Soon all commerce will take place online, and there will be nowhere that people can actually go to interact with real people. I have all hope that comic stores will survive the ebay/netflix-ish movement where everything you buy can just be delivered to your home. Comix Experience makes me rethink that stance. read more

The comic book stores in SF are weak. High on attitude, low on selection. This is the best of the lot. The selection pales before Comic Relief or Lee's. Owner Brian is a gruff, but funny guy. What a businessman! He seems to have contempt for his customers and his product! He openly pans most of the stuff he sells! Has he given up smoking or mellowed at all since he had a baby? I haven't been there in a while, but I stop in when I am in the area. read more
