10/10 not sure why it's only got 3.7 stars that's outrageous! It's not a fine dining experience. It's for people who want to have a real authentic mom and pop seafood/soul food/bbq experience! Food is always fresh and delicious! If you are lucky enough you get to meet Commander Cody ( not his real name) The Commander's daughter does most of the cooking and baking all delicious. Try the carrot cake it's so moist. Locals are lucky to have this restaurant. read more

Came here for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty quiet. A no-frills ambiance which was totally fine; food was good and they of course used high-quality seafood. You order at the counter, which was part of their fish market. There were many people coming and going for either takeout or fresh fish while we were there, which was a good sign! The only thing that could have been better was the hospitality. The person working there didn't smile once during any of our interactions and we felt very unwelcome. While I understand that this place is possibly more of a grab-and-go establishment, a little friendliness could go a long way for Commander Cody patrons. read more

Yes, it's got a cool vibe, good music. We had fish and chips, the fish was fresh and very good, and the fries were also very good; and we had a great lobster roll. Service is essentially non-existent. You have to figure out for yourself how to order. We did that and then they lost our order. The kitchen/food preparation is filthy. We came for a late dinner and we are so happy we did! We got the cocktail shrimp and mussels with fries. The shrimp were so large and juicy. The cocktail sauce had an odd congealed texture so we skipped the sauce. We squeezed the lemon on top and put a bit of salt and pepper on it and it was perfect. Highly recommend and I will be back next time I am in the Island. Friendly charming old school neighborhood spot serving simple well seasoned steamed or fried seafood, fried chicken and ribs. It is tiny inside and out but lucky we snagged the few available parking spots. They had a good amount of to go orders while we ate our late lunch on their sweet outdoor patio blasting some good soulful jazz and soul . We got to meet the Commander himself -and take a pic . We sampled most everything on the menu-fried chicken , bbq ribs, fried seafood platter, lobster clambake, lobster roll and mussels .Everything was tasty . Food came out normal pace. Only complaint would be lobster roll could have been more filled , lobster clambake could have more clam,mussels and shrimp and mussels were a tad under . I am much appreciated the lobster bake seasoned with garlic and parsley not just steamed with nothing. Pricing was very reasonable for ultra fresh seafood and the generous quantities . $220 for 3 adults and 3 kids and we had leftovers. We were full so no room for the much raved about desserts. No alcohol but we brought our own. This business is also black owned which for me was an extra reason to celebrate its success! I truly hope his daughter will continue the legacy . read more

OneDaFul seafood and personable staff. We did take-out as are day ran late, so we had about a 40 minute wait after placing our order. Just watching the customer's excitement caught my interest as we had never been here before. Truth be told, I am a consumer of ground agriculturals by combustion and I was greeted by a multitude of likeminded individuals. That is always such a OneDaFul treat when the food is AWESOME as well! Went here on day trip to shelter island from greenport . What a fun off the hook experience ,you may wait a little while on the home cooked food but as hot as temperature was in July . Picked here because of the reviews. It was 5:30 on a Saturday You pull up and it looks like a run down property. Actually to be more honest - it looks like a junk yard. Confused as to where you enter. Finally find the door and then can't figure out what goes on here. Do I sit? Do I order? Do I get my own food? Woman in front of me helps me out - tells me what to do - you order than sit. They bring it out. We wait about 30 minutes for our turn to order. While waiting I here these monstrous order being called in for chicken and ribs. My turn to order - I ask the woman " what are you known for" Chicken and Ribs So that's what I order. Picked a table outside and opened a bottle of vino. We did drink the entire bottle before the food came out. The food was amazing. Ribs? Best I've ever had. Did not get a good impression when I got there. I had walked into the place waiting for someone to tell me where to order food or sit down. The host and waiter was very grumpy. He had handed us a menu and was unaware of what was on the menu when we had ordered the meal. When seeing the attitudes of the employees I was looking on yelp to see why this place had a great review. The bad comments are pretty accurate when reading it takes long and they get the menu meals wrong. Scrimp Scampi was ordered and on the menu it said with pasta but it did not come with pasta. When we asked for pasta with it they said it would take to long and we would be done eating. They were unaware of what was listed on the menu and said there are typos on the menu. And also to make things "ok" said the chief was old. I had also asked for a few sides that were on the menu and they said they were cooking it and it would take to long to eat. Overall after asking many times for pasta we had gotten it to fill us up and we had also gotten fish. Food was good but not pleasant to enjoy your food while eating. They had also charged us for more things than we ordered which we had asked to fix and there was no warning about cash only anywhere. Highly recommend not going here read more

What can I say about the Experience at Commander Cody's; fun time, byob, good food, great prices in a relaxed almost Caribbean resort town feel. Commander does smoked ribs like no body's business! Smokey, fall off the bone meat and a delicious sauce. Some of the best ribs I have ever had. The Fried Chicken is phenomenal, crispy outside with tender juicy chicken on the inside. So good and on day 2, even better with a nice glass of Lieb Cab-franc (at the vineyard for a leftovers picnic lunch). We also had some fried sea scallops that were right off the docks fresh as could be delicious. Also, a little day 2 magic with these as well- tender and almost sushi like. You can't beat the value of this wonderful long established down home eatery and take out market. Just great food in an extremely relaxed laid back island like environment. I love coming to Shelter Island and staying at Sunset Beach, but the food and prices there get old quickly. So glad we found Commander Cody's, it's now our go-to spot when on vacation. The Commander starts frying around 5PM and everything he touches turns out perfectly. The fried shrimp is a must. The last time we were in a local fisherman dropped off some fish while we were waiting. The Commander said we'd need to try that, too, and he threw it in for us. So good. You can call ahead and place an order which is helpful if you're in a rush, but I really like hanging out in here. read more

Place is small and you feel like you're in someone's backyard, which is nice for a place like this. Fish traps line the yard and they have a smoker for smoking fish. Peaches is a doll. She creates a hospitable and fun environment which compliments the food delectably. The ribs are soft, flavorful, and peel off the bone with ease. The shrimp is fresh, meaty, and with that spicy cocktail sauce, whoooo nelly! Last, but undoubtedly not least, are the oysters. Rented a house just up the road from Commander Cody's and wasn't sure what to expect. Answer is, great prepared food and an amazingly well-stocked fresh fish counter. Ate here for dinner the first night, we arrived late in the evening after a day's travel and the fried seafood combo was just perfect. Biscuit, hot sauce, Cole slaw, delicious. Came back for lunch, had shrimp cocktail and fish/chips. Our toddler loved it, if you have kids you understand how crucial that is. We bought all of our fresh fish for home cooking throughout the week there as well, and let me tell you, the quality ranks with anything I've eaten from Manhattan to Maine to San Francisco to Sicily. Swordfish, snapper, oysters... Not sure what I'm buying tonight but I bet it will be good. As far as the service, listen. This is a small family-run operation, if you make an effort to be friendly and understanding you'll be rewarded with sweetness and good service.
