This place could be really something....2 dollars for a dozen clams? What a deal right? So here's the thing. First of all - tiniest clams to ever exist. Which is fine, at that price, I'll just take down 3 dozen, no big deal. Except what you realize once you're in the place (or even from just outside the door actually) is that you want to spend as little time here as possible. I guess because they have slot machines they're technically a casino so...they allow smoking inside...and there is virtually no ventilation, so the place stinks. The food ends up tasting like smoke, and honestly it just leads to an overall lousy experience. The bartender was CLEARLY overworked, getting refills took a LONG time and a lot of effort... Just overall, not someplace I'd come back to. It's a bummer because it's cheap eats and drinks and honestly...while the clams were small, they were tasty. I would come back if they had outdoor seating...but again, as a former smoker married to an asthmatic, I'm not going to be spending a bunch of time in a smokey, dank, poohole...no matter how decent the food is. read more

This is a friendly neighborhood bar. First, many of the patrons are smoking cigarettes if that turns you off. I didn't find it obnoxious or overpowering. The staff is very nice. You make your food order at the bar and the cook will deliver it to your table. There are only about 6-8 tables, most patrons are eating at the bar. We had 3 dozen clams ($2.50 / doz), a black diamond steak with fried onions and fries ($10.99), a yeungling, and a diet coke for $20.85. If you want an honest, good value meal and don't mind a billiards game right next to your table, video gaming machines, and the smell of cigarettes, this is your spot. Classic smoke filled dive bar. Food was cheap and the burgers and $2.50 steamed clams are good. Pool table in the center of small dining room so if you are at certain tables be prepared to move once in a while for the players to shoot. No table service, which sucks. You need to go to the bar and order, and there is only one bartender trying to handle the bar plus food orders, so when the bar gets crowded it can be challenging. I ordered and after 45 minutes of not getting my food (10-15 min average) I found my order slip still at the bar. I waited almost 15 minutes just for the chance to order, the bartender was extremely overworked and I starved and had to cancel my order. Ok listen folks I been here a few times and it has been the same thing each time. I like this spot somewhat because I can sit at the bar and play keno and the wings are not bad. Here is the issue, me and my friends went in taco day and I swear I don't know how I forgot to get a picture of it, but you get a taco and get excited because one taco come in the huge shell!!!! I swear this is no lie there was about a teaspoon of ground beef in the shell, it was basically a lettuce and tomato taco. No expensive me had a black diamond steak because I'm not a fan of lettuce and tomato tacos, the steak was good, but that is short lived because you only get 2 bites and it's gone. The Commix Hotel is a great little dive bar! We go there for drinks and clams. We sometimes venture off and order something else from the menu though and haven't had anything we didn't love! The steaks were terrific, which was a huge surprise to me! The environment is that of a local bar with lots of regulars. The people are terrific! i go here and feel welcome! The bar tenders, especially Luke are friendly and fun. Drink prices seem a little steep, but they are generous with the amount you get. The clams are great! Butter, not so much. Apparently its not butter, but a lesser expensive mix of butter and margarine. Service is almost always friendly and pretty fast too! They allow smoking at the Commix because its a 21 and over establishment. Don't go there is cigarette smoke bothers you because it does tend to get smokey. But if you do go, put yourself out there and talk to some of the folks. Honestly,I love dive bars and this one tops them.Extremely inexpensive,decent quality food and huge portions for the price.Only thing I could say negative is its a smoking bar,so if you don't like cigarette smoke you may be deterred but I'm not a fan of smoke and I'd go again for sure. I had fried cauliflower with ranch dressing as well as melted cheese sauce on the side,a chicken cheesesteak with pickles,onions,and they have a house sauce that was ok.Id probably ask for no sauce next time. You can't beat that) and there's a wide range of beverage choices. They recently incorporated wine bottles into their menu, and I hope glasses will be available for purchase soon. I'm not sure what kind of inbred folks they cater to, but the whole experience was a joke. Yes, The Commix is considered a "dive" bar but it's great. You can't beat the food prices and all of the servers are nice and friendly. Sometimes the clams are hit or miss but for crying out loud they are 99 cents. We've never had a bad sandwich and their cheesesteaks are even better now that they changed their rolls a few months ago. And yes it's a smoking establishment but you know that going into the bar so don't complain about something that is well known and their ventilation system isn't bad. This place the mother of all dive bars.My fiance & I were introduced to this place almost three months ago & we have been there every Saturday night since then. You can't beat the prices of food or drink. My favorite is the $0.99/dozen mahogany clams. The clientele is slightly red neckish & since I'm 22, I am easily young enough to be a lot of the customers daughter, or even granddaughter. However everyone is suprisingly friendly & the jukebox provides plenty of entertainment. If you are a non-smoker like myself it can get a little overwhelming in there at times, & you will come out of there smelling like you skipped through a meadow of cigarette butts regardless of where you sit. Ate there later last night. Had the fried cauliflower as app to share. Big portion! I got the special: spicy cheesesteak which came with choice of side. I choose the NE clam chowder. It was soooo good. Big pieces of clams and so creamy. Cheesesteak was nice sized too and delicious. Ate it all. BF got the chicken cheesesteak. Again, big portion. He loved it. I love this place! I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal at commix hotel. Clams, tacos, burgers, poppers.....etc, all so yummy. It's bar food so if your looking for A lobster dinner this place isn't for you. My husband and I like to visit often for the food & atmosphere. The staff is always so nice & prompt with waiting on customers. It's also nice to see the locals and regulars around the little bar. This is simply the best place ever! The food is AMAZING and everything is super cheap. You will also get some of the best wings here and there are plenty of sauce options (I love the Cajun!). If you like super hot sauce their Suicide wings kick some major butt... way too hot for me to handle more than a little taste of but they are yummy. You can also get deep fried pickles here- I can't recall seeing them anywhere else. But seriously, all of the food is delicious! We usually go on a certain night every week or two and our favorite bartender Connie is there. She is an absolute sweetie and will take care of you. The jukebox has a pretty eclectic mix of music and is at the perfect volume- you can still hear the people next to you but you can still easily rock out with the music. Also- the other customers at this bar are great people too. They also come in quite a variety of personalities but it is so much fun talking with them and sharing stories! Great people all around! Also, you can smoke in here! There is great ventilation so the smoke doesn't really linger. But really, if your like the yuppie a few reviews down who can't handle smoke then don't bother (Why would you go to a smoking bar if you can't stand smoke? You could easily turn back around and go somewhere else!). Just a small warning: They do not take credit cards, it is cash only. They do have an atm inside, though. If you're an avid smoker, this place is great... unless you're trying to get a beer. Part of the draw to this place was the fact I could sit at the bar and enjoy a butt with my pint. However, all the townies discovered that a long time ago and continued to infest it to the degree all other patrons became lesser customers. I've been here three times and never managed to get the time of day from the bartender. This place is your typical hole in the wall without the charm. I was told that the Clams were $.99 a dozen so I went there and took my family. WRONG THING TO DO. I arrived on Friday evening around 6:30pm went into the dinning room which is converted into a pool hall with about 8 tables. Smelled like cigarettes and cigars and the place was clearly dirty. I asked the Bar Manager if she could get us a table since most of the tables seemed empty but had beer bottles all over the place. She said The tables are taken. She defiantly was not worried about my food business but was about their beer consumption. If you drive down Emmaus Ave. and see this place with the sign $.99 a dozen for clams....keep driving........Unless you like dirty places that smell of smoke. It took a bottle of fabreeze to get the smell out of my clothes before we went to another place and we were only in there for 5 minutes. One of the other reviews stated If you do not like smoke then don't go there. I agree but then advertise that it is a smoking place. You can not smoke in most places that serve food. Your bar take in has to be 70% and The food intake can only be 30% of you daily business or the place has to be non-smoking. The Commix is the definition of a dive bar. The decor mainly consists of wood paneling and stuffed animal heads. The drinks and food are cheap. Well drinks were less than 3 dollars last time I was there. Clams are .99 a dozen. They serve food pretty late on most days. You have to try the deep fried pickles if you go there. They are delicious. The place is very small and has a room with a bar and a room with a pool table and some seating. Despite its name there is no rooms you can stay at. read more

Stopped in for first visit ever after seeing the $.99 clams sign. Clams are on larger side and a little chewy but not bad with some butter and crackers. For $.99 can't be beat! Some great specials also: $3.99 cheesesteak, $2.99 cheeseburger, $6.95 steak and fries, and very reasonable domestic drafts. Eclectic bar crowd included old Navy vet, couple of long-hairs, couple of skin-head look, and a couple or two. Smoke is an issue if, like me, you're a non-smoker, but not everyone was puffing away. Better ventilation would sure help. Recommend the place if you prefer bare bones, no frills, "no shirt, no shoes, no problem", type bars to the trendy, $5 beer, 'Gucci/Ralph Lauren worn here' type places. Will be back! read more
