Randomly stumbled upon this place while a friend and I were walking around after spending some time at The Standard's biergarten. The music sounded great so my friend and I decided to check it out. Initially we were told that it was full inside and there would be a wait time. So we waited outside for a while and had a drink. About 30 minutes later we finally got in. Music was all top 40s and a great selection. Most people were in their mid 20s so it's a bit of a young crowd. Some people were up on the tables dancing. Overall a very fun vibe read more

This place was such a vibe! So cute. We went on a Thursday night, which is apparently trivia night (or at least it was that Thurs) so we sat outside. We went inside to use the restroom and it was very dark and had beautiful lights hung up! I would love to go back and sit inside. The staff was so incredibly nice to us, the hostess was recommending drinks, and when they brought out the wrong order they were really great about replacing it quickly with the correct food. CG is a staple of NY nightlife right now. Not only is it a great venue. It's the perfect mix of a bar and club. Great music and the staff is extremely nice. They also have literally the best bartender in New York City, Maurice, Olympic talent behind the bar. If your more of a happy hour person, the food is phenomenal too make sure to get the chicken finger towers. read more

Found a rat pellet in my food here. When I confronted the owner, Sean, about it, he tried to claim it was a chocolate chip. Nice try dude, but I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. Absolutely disgusting establishment. Would give this place negative stars if I could. read more

From the outside, this spot looked like my kinda place. Loved the grafitti on the walls outside, loved the little patio out front, and I definitely loved the random hallway covered in foliage for no reason. (Sure, I'm an Instagram prat like anyone else.) The décor is about where I stopped liking the place, though it's more than likely a personality difference than anything else. The staff were a bit oblivious (watched a few people get served before me, when I was in line first) and when they did serve me they were pretty aloof. The drinks were fine, if overpriced--but then, I'm guessing everything around here is expensive? I had an aperol spritz that was just about right. I'd visit again, if only because the location is convenient and I really did like the space. Mind you, I'd not be dancing here until the wee hours. read more

I wish I could give this place less than a 1 Star. I attended their NYE event and now my biggest regret in 2017 was buying a ticket for common ground. Hands down, the worst NYE event I have attended. The bouncers were extremely aggressive, shouting in people's faces, punching a guy in the face, and shoving people around and treating everyone like animals. I can't believe you can employ people like this... Getting a drink was a huge mess!! It was an open bar and they would not serve anyone that was not holding out cash. Speaking of tips, when I tried to get my coat from coat check I was told they would get it for faster if I tipped them. When I told them that was inappropriate, they said "that's how you run a business". Can't speak to it as a regular night bar, but their NYE event was a joke. By the time I got there (~10pm) the coat check was full! Turns out that holding my coat all night would turn out to be a good thing for me bc my friends who coat checked had to wait 1.5 hours (no joke, I waited with them). All staff were unnecessarily rude - I'm sorry you have to work NYE but bartenders were only taking orders from people flashing money and kept changing how many drinks each person was allowed and getting mad when we tried to order more than 1. Saw a couple fights too. Just overall a mess. Dj was ok, he got better the later it got. Bathroom was kinda gross too. read more

Came from Boston to go here for NYE. Paid for the ultra VIP ($200). Upon arrival we had to do a mandatory coat check which was not stated on the ticket and pay $5 each. Happy we got a table since the place ended up getting super crowded and people couldn't even get drinks. We did try to get a drink at the bar and the bartender dropped my friends credit card then yelled at her and wouldn't serve her after he couldn't find the card he dropped. The other bartender was so drunk that she couldn't even serve drinks and she was flashing her nipples. They also wanted people to pay for drinks (give them big tips too) which made no sense since it was an open bar. There was a guy throwing up by our table and when we told the bouncer he did nothing. It was so gross. When we decided to leave, the coat check "line" was a disaster of people telling that they didn't get their coats. The bouncers tried to step in but made it worse and started throwing people around. Wouldn't be surprised if someone sued. We were waiting for 1 more coat when the bouncer grabbed my friends and pushed them out of the line and then kicked them out of the bar for no reason. It was absurd. Very poorly organized. Not worth the money and very disappointing. I will be contacting the ticket place for a refund. read more

Came here last night for NYE as part of a ticket that let us into multiple bars. Got here around 11 PM and the coat check was full. The bar was pretty crowded, and getting a drink was impossible. As the night went on, the bartenders got increasingly drunk, and wouldn't serve anyone that wasn't flashing a big tip, despite everyone having paid for an open bar. There were only 4 bathroom stalls for a hugely crowded bar, and the line often took more than half an hour. Luckily I wasn't able to check my coat, because my friends had to wait over an hour for their coats. People were getting in fights, and a bouncer punched someone in the face. Needless to say I will never be coming back here for any reason, and they should not be holding events. read more

We walked up at 6:30pm on April 9th, 2022 and the bouncer said it was $300 to get in. We came to meet friends who had a table but in order for us 4 to get in, we had to pay $300 immediately. The bouncer was incredibly rude for absolutely no reason.... It was also daylight so I didn't really understand why he was acting like he was on a power trip. I hope they do better in the future as I think it's a great venue but needs a staff that has a better attitude. read more

Last weekend, my friends and I had a table at CG. After the 2 hour time limit, we were told to move so we found an open spot by the bar and met up with friends who had a tab open. All was fine and everyone was having a good time, until one of the bouncers randomly grabbed my friend and told her she needed to leave. It was completely unprovoked and one of the waitresses even followed us outside to ask what she did to be thrown out. My friend became visibly upset because the bouncer refused to explain why he grabbed her out of anyone in our group and made her leave. We came to her defense to try to figure out what the issue was and after a few minutes a manager came outside, apologized, blamed it on a "misunderstanding", and invited us back inside for a free round of shots. After publicly humiliating my friend, why would we be interested in re-entering the bar? As if being thrown out for no reason was bad enough, this friend was the only person of color in our group. When this was brought up, the bouncer replied "no that's not the issue - you're a pretty girl we want girls like you here." Yet still could not provide an explanation for why he threw her out. She was not trying to pull a race card here, but you can understand how this would look to other people and why this would be especially sensitive to her. And I see this is not the first review to call out some sort of discrimination so now this makes sense to me. We spent over $1300 at this place and for my friend to have been treated this way is completely unacceptable. Had there been a legitimate explanation for it, we would understand. But after 20 minutes of calmly asking questions outside we still had no answers. It's unfortunate because we all loved common ground and would come here often, but after last weekend I don't think we'll ever be back. Would rather spend that kind of money at a place that treats everyone with respect. read more

I'd just like to add on to the other reviews of the New Years Eve event at Common Ground. Very poorly run. There was a mandatory coat check on a below 0 degree night in NYC, therefore every single person in the place had to check a coat into a very small and understaffed coat closet. Obvious issues at the end of the night (mob scene with patrons and bouncers getting very physical). The bouncers were getting physical and kicking people out rather than controlling the crowd that this establishment created. There were people vomiting in front of security and nothing being done to help or evacuate them. The bartenders got progressively drunk and worse as the place filled up. They were visibly taking shots with other workers as they ignored drink orders. The unisex bathroom line was a mess with no security to control it throughout the night. Although I can't speak for Common Ground on a regular night (and I had previously heard good things, which was why we chose the venue for NYE), I won't be going back to find out how it is. read more

Don't waste your time coming to this establish on a Saturday night. My friends and I, 13 of us, waited on line for over an hour. While waiting on line, management was clueless. They let numerous people skip the line which was halfway down the block. After we finally approached the front of the line, a man in a white shirt, some sort of manager, decided to tell us that it would be a waste of time for us to keep waiting. Keep in mind, this is after over an hour of waiting! Why waste our time? Very unprofessional. Furthermore, the same man says they are at capacity, but is letting more groups of people skip the line? If you're at full occupancy, that doesn't seem safe. Bottom line: the management here doesn't care about you. They don't care how long you wait, and they don't care how they talk to you. This is a review for 10-30-2020. I have been here in the past for a tippler and here for another tippler . We ordered fries and wings bbq. It was fine typical bar food. It tasted fresh and was hot. My drink was passion fruit spritz it was the bomb. They had a dj playing which added to the ambience and spooky decor. It was cool. The General Tso tofu was SERIOUS Business and the Thai chicken lettuce wraps were surprisingly filling, not to mention DELICIOUS.
