Definitely one of our favorite places to come hang out, have a drink, and munch on some food. We love the atmosphere they've built here, which is very laid back. They change their menu a good bit to keep variety available for everyone. The staff are always nice every time we go, it's very easy to order, and you can sit wherever. They have a nice variety of beer on tap and last time I went, I had a peach smoothie sour that was really tasty. My not-so-hidden motive for coming here, though, is the smash burger. Stopped in here with my husband on our way to the Coliseum. I loved the atmosphere. There was such a diverse group of people: families, couples, friends, senior citizens and everyone in between. Several people were playing games while sipping their beers. I remember seeing scrabble and UNO. There are a variety of games on a shelf along the back wall to choose from. Even though it was a chilly evening, there were a bunch of people out on the patio. They had the gas heaters on and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I ended up trying the Pilsener and it was delicious. My husband had one of the several IPAs on the menu and he loved it. I ate the chicken sandwich (it was a special) and my plus one had the Hamburg. My brother and sister-in-law were in town and we were in the area. My sister-in-law absolutely loves breweries so we decided to stop in. From the outside, it looks a lot bigger than it actually is. The Con's; there was really awful music being played. Creed maybe I think?... I'm not sure... It sounded mid-90s alternative-genre... Very low on the talent side.. It was very hard to listen to... Just wanted to slug my brew down and get the heck out of there.. Also, it was pretty cold out the day I visited and they had the A/C on I think, and the fans turning. I've been to Commonhouse Aleworks a few times, and although I'm not a huge beer fan, I've always had a lot of fun, enjoyed myself, and found something to eat and drink. They offer a wide variety of beers and different pricing options for pours. Along with beer, Commonhouse also offers several kinds of wine, and they have food trucks or pop-ups on the lawn. They use Facebook to let you know who'll be serving food, but also provide menus to order from local restaurants as well. You can sit inside or out, and the location is very accessible, with a large, gravel parking lot just across the street as well as a ramp for anyone with mobility issues. Commonhouse hosts a Thursday night run club, participates in Charleston Beer Week activities, and tries to give back to the community. Great addition to Park Circle. read more

So we did a mini self-guided Chucktown brewery tour/crawl...13 breweries in 3 days. Charles Towne Fermentory on the west side of the city was my favorite if you were wondering at all, but that's likely because they're geared toward what I like (New England style unfiltered murky IPA's). The beer here is fine (they run from 5 to 7 bucks per pint) and you should go check them out and see if you really like them, but my better half and I were really turned off by the lone beertender working the day we visited this place. His name was Kelsey and he seemed like he hated life in general. Seriously. He definitely was not at all happy to be working or serving beer that day and that was a major downer. Of all 13 breweries we visited on our tour, he was literally the only beertender we found to be unfriendly. He said basically nothing to us, despite our attempts to chat him up etc. We literally drank our flights here and then bailed because of him...we didn't want to approach him to ask him for another beer. No way. The dude was just sour, no beer pun intended. Another downer was that they had zero New England style IPA's on tap, though they had at least one bitter IPA. Flights are the standard Chucktown 4 beers for 10 dollars plus tax. They offered chips, boiled peanuts, and even moon pies to eat, as well as Yoohoo, Sun Drop, and Stewart's orange soda. They only fill crowlers here, no growler fills available. You can take home some of their canned beers as well if you so choose. Bathrooms were very clean and nicely appointed and both their air conditioning and WiFi ran really strong! The crowd here tended toward the yuppie/preppie type as we saw lots of khakis and polo shirts. This is not a hipster beard heaven by any means. They have indoor and outdoor seating, street parking, food trucks that they schedule and advertise on their website and board games like Sorry and Battleship in house. Roll out some NE style ippas and get Kelsey to complete some customer service training and I'd revisit this jurnt, otherwise, I'm passing. read more

The main building was closed off due to Covid-19 restrictions but plenty of seating in the courtyard. We were just passing through so no food for us. Newish brewpub in Park Circle and now pretty much a staple to hit while in the area. They have a large outdoor seating and a quality short menu. The food service is quick once ordered. The beer line can get long with the extra precautions for the Rona. I would recommend getting 2 pints at a time. The walk-up window for dog-owners is now the primary ordering location. What a nice brewery for us beer fans. The interior has about 4 long community tables to share, then a large outside patio with picnic tables to enjoy the fresh air. No bar here, so you can't sit and chit chat with the beer tender or others. Get your beer and go mingle. That's what this place is about, and we had fun here. Just 6 beers on tap for now, they have ales, IPA, and a stout. My favorite was the Broad Path Brown ale, with its malty, lightly hopped taste. I sampled others and found rest were decent, not impressive. But this Alehouse will be busy, and with it's nice design and appearance is a welcome newcomer to the craft brew community. Really a mixed bag. The beer is good and the service is friendly and attentive. My wife got a strawberry froze, and it was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Food was a different story. My wife's burger was great, but the parm truffle fries had a strong, fresh garlic acridness to them. And the chicken sandwich, where to begin? There was nothing "Nashville hot" about it. I don't mean that in the sense that I like spicy food and this came up short. I mean that there was no seasoning or spice to it at all. Beyond that the chicken tenders (which always make for an unwieldy sandwich) were overcooked to oblivion. Eating the sandwich made my jaw sore. I think it would be a great place to enjoy several beers and live music. And I'll grant that we went at an off-peak time, which often leads to subpar food. Great addition to the Charleston beer scene! I (along with approximately half of Charleston) attended the grand opening this weekend, and had an awesome time. The live music on the patio was great, and will definitely be appreciated once it warms up a bit. I also loved that they had a few food trucks slinging snacks to pair perfectly with the beer. My favorite part was the "ask for Angela" sign in the bathroom that encourages women who feel unsafe to be able to discretely seek help from the bar. Bravo! I came to Commonhouse Aleworks last week for Trivia on a Tuesday night. Its a brewery who also serve beer & some wines. The attraction for me is that Chef Florrie Brannon from Pier 41 & The Basement here in Mt. Pleasant does the food at Commonhouse and it's pretty tasty. The theme being bar food with a twist and deliciousness. Of course that would be the case with Florrie being involved. I would expect no less. It's a bar with high top community tables, encouraging people to mingle. It's important to note that you need to go to the counter to order drinks & food. Then you are given a block of wood with a number for the table to which the food magically appears fairly soon after the order! It's a fun night out for Trivia and a decent addition to this area of Park Circle. read more

I got the impossible burger a couple of years ago on my birthday when I came last time. Today I got the "brunch burger" for the first time, which came with a fried egg, and WOW is all I can say. The employees are always very friendly & know what's up with the beers. They won't BS you. You can sample any of them before you decide too, no problem. After everyone else received their food, I was informed it would take an additional ten minutes for my order. Well, ten minutes later nothing and I was forced to inquire on the status - only to be informed another long wait. Reminder, a short order menu and on an underwhelming crowd. I was here for the Saint Patrick's Day block party. As expected, it was crazy busy! The did a great job of keeping the beer lines running and their Gose was very good! The food wait was crazy and after almost an hour, all my friends had received their food and eaten but my single pretzel still hadn't come out.
