I wanted to love this place but it was so unwelcoming. The baristas were rude and wouldn't explain the drinks as I was trying to figure out my order. The location is so cool but unfortunately the service feels like the invasion of the snooty LA vibe that overtaking Oceanside. Incredible latte. Incredible bagel with creme cheese. Kind employees. Very very busy on a Saturday morning. Line was out the door. Dog-friendly + outdoor seating. This place is so cute! I had heard of Communal and it was a meeting point for a friend of mine in Orange County to come down so we decided ro check it out. I was so impressed they had so many gluten free things on their menu! I got the Avocado Toast on gluten free bread and it was so good! I also got the Vanilla Latte which was delicious as well. I love their little plant shop on the side and the space is light and airy. There are no high chairs as a FYI so bring a stroller if your kids are little. This is such a cute, vibey coffee shop. I've been to the north park location, but I think this one might be better. There's not a ton of seating indoors, but there's more tables outside so finding a spot wasn't hard. The coffee is good, the shop has a lot of cute trinkets (nothing that I felt like buying lol but still fun to look), and the inviting atmosphere makes me feel like I could post up with a laptop and spend several hours here. This place is one of my favorite places. The coffee is amazing and the ambiance is stunning. If I could add ONE thing, one of my favorite things about coffee shops are the people that work there. They set the tone of the place. But here, the baristas that usually work in the morning are moody and don't really smile. And that's fine, like we can't always by happy and chipper, but just remember that. You're setting the tone of the place. And if you're like "ehhh" the whole vibe of the shop will be that way. Came here on a Sunday afternoon for a pickmeup and was pleasantly surprised by how lovely this place was. The decor and atmosphere are pretty and calming. Thai makes a great study or working spot. The service was polite and friendly and they did a great job recommending options for us. We ordered the matcha lemonade and the coconut cold brew. The matcha lemonade was pretty sour. What a gem of an place! I'm so glad I came by. It's an excellent location to get work done with ample tables, outlets, and natural lighting. The indoor seating is spaced well and the outdoor seating shared a deck with the restaurant next door, but is sectioned off. The staff seems friendly and the items sold are beautiful. The kitchen items and drinks are yummy, but you are truly paying for the ambiance and atmosphere of the place - which I didn't mind too much. Looking for a quaint spot for a breakfast bite. Super cute place with trinkets for sale...walk up ordering..there is seating inside and outside and a small 6 person bar top. Communal is definitely adorable - but there isn't a ton of substance. Coffee and tea is fine, but nothing extraordinary. I've had the mint cold brew, various flavored lattes, and matcha. I'm a HUGE mint fan, and I hate to say it, but the mint wasn't as punchy as I wanted. The vanilla bean is tasty, but the syrups are too sweet in my opinion (half sweet is an option though!). Great place to study, work, or catch up with a friend. Wifi is pretty fast and free, coffee tastes great, and there is lots of windows open, allowing in natural light along with a cool breeze from the beach nearby. The employees here are very friendly and the food smells so good. There's tons of street parking available nearby as well. Only downside is, because of the open windows, there tends to be a lot of flies inside the shop. read more

Coming from Portland, I'm giving this place a 4/5 for their coffee. I found myself here 4 times in one week as I was working remotely and needed a coffeeshop with strong WiFi. From those 4 times and quite a few cappuccinos later, I'd recommend that they train some of their baristas a little more as a few of my cappuccinos were, well, interesting. One I watched a new gal who was training pour in way too much steamed milk into a latte sized glass, realize that it was too big of a size, and re-pour it into a smaller glass, losing the crema and all of the microfoam on top. However, on my last day there, I had a different barista make my drink and the cappuccino was wonderful! That said, the atmosphere, pastries and food were amazing and deserve a 5 star rating because it's a lovely spot. There is plenty of seating available and outlets are plentiful for those looking to plug in their laptop chargers and get some work or studying done. read more

Super cute place but the coffee and service are very average. I actually came here twice in a weekend because it was really close to our Airbnb. It's also very closely located to the beach which is a nice bonus. I came here Saturday morning around 7am and it was getting pretty busy. I ordered the iced mint coffee which was just okay. The mint flavor really didn't come through as much as I wanted it to. I also ordered a garlic croissant pastry which was really oily. I love butter but it was overwhelming. The server looked miserable and while she wasn't rude, she wasn't friendly. The next day, I came on Sunday around 8am. It was packed and a line was going out the door. I opted for a regular cold brew which was slightly on the acidic side of coffee. I preferred it over the mint. However, it was basically the same price as a latte which isn't usually the norm. Service, again, was not super friendly or rude. As for the atmosphere, I really love the decor, the brightness the windows and sun roof bring in, the plants, and how they've incorporated a flower shop. There's also small trinkets you can buy, ranging from baby's clothing, to earrings, cards, and plants. However, the atmosphere is not enough to compare to the actual coffee. read more

I truly can't believe this is the first time I've heard about this cafe! I was searching for a new coffee shop to try in Oceanside and found Communal. I met up with a friend here and we loved it immediately- it's adorable inside with a ton of space to study. They even have a pretty large back patio to sit and catch up with friends or work. I got kombucha and oatmeal with added fruit, but I think they forgot to add the fruit. The receipt said strawberries but there were only a meager few blueberries for an extra $2. I also wish they made their own oatmeal versus using packaged ones! The kombucha was great, a bit of a kick and not too sweet. My friend really enjoyed the aioli avocado bagel. The only things keeping this from becoming my go-to cafe are 1. it's very very busy, we had to study on the back patio because there were no seats inside (on a Tuesday at 10), and 2. it's pretty loud. Communal is a cute shop by Bagby (another great spot). My husband and I were crusin' after dinner on night, when he showed me a ton of new shop that just opened up. We saw communal and said "Coffee?". Yes, please! I love how open this space is. There is a ton of seating and when the weather is right, all of the windows are open. Which makes for a more comfy environment. They have a decent sized menu with a ton of options with some vegan items too, which I love! Their coffee is really good, smooth yet strong. I like that their flavors arent your standard sugar filled vanilla or caramel. They have: vanilla bean, salted caramel and rose vanilla or honey lavender if you're into that. In front is also a cute little shop with a ton of items. Candles, earings, cups, blankets, etc. Attached, is also a cute flower shop. Communal has really thought of everything. I've been here a million times and I've never been so uncomfortable. When I walked up to order the girl at the register looked me up and down like I was trash and didn't smile or say hi. I ordered, sat down and waited 35 minutes for my coffee. I finally realized people were getting coffees that were behind me so I finally got up to ask. I waited at the coffee pick up for another 5 minutes and got ignored by the same girl who took my order. Finally she acknowledged me and I asked for my coffee and she made it in 2 seconds. She said "sorry" in the most condescending tone and it just felt like she did it on purpose. I don't know her name but she had dreadlocks and a bad attitude. I'm not one to scream racism but she was extra friendly to the white people and just nasty to me (a Latina). Safe to say I'm never coming here if she's working here ever again. read more
